Here we go!
The start of the season is only days away and the excitement is building. The Jackrabbits will play a pre-season match against the reigning state champion Highland Hawks. Game time for the scrimmage is 4:00 pm AT Highland High School. Then Mesa will open the regular season of play up on Tuesday December 1st at Skyline against the Coyotes. Once region rivals, these 2 teams will renew a rivalry that led to alternating Region championships just 4 years ago. Game time is 6:00. We hope to see you out there to cheer on the Jackrabbits as they start their way back toward the State Championship game.

Tryout Information
This year's Boys soccer tryouts will begin Monday November 2nd at Mesa High School. Tryouts will be held on the east practice fields, just north of the football stadium and south of the baseball stadium. Tryouts will begin around 3:00 pm and will last until around 5:00 pm each day during the week. Each student athlete partcipating will need a physical form on file with our Athletic Secretary (she can be found in the front office) BEFORE they can tryout. Appropriate dress for participation includes soccer attire (t-shirt, shorts, socks) as well as shin guards and shoes (cleats are reccommended but not required for tryouts). It is also a good idea to bring water, although water will be provided by our training staff.
For our 9th graders intending on trying out, there is NO transportation provided to the High School. If they have a physical already on file for a fall sport, they will need a copy (from the Jr. High secretary) of that physical to be brought to the Athletic Secretary at the High School. Please have all 9th graders up to the tryouts as soon as possible.
For more information please email Coach Hagen at thagen@mpsaz.org

Mesa to play in Semi's for 1st time
The Mesa Jackrabbit Soccer team will play in the 5A Division I State Semi-Finals for the 1st time in team history. Behind a stellar defensive effort and some late heroics from the offense, Mesa defeated #11 seeded Desert Mountain 4-0. The Jackrabbits find themselves now 1 game away from playing for the State Title. With 17 minutes left to go in the second half, Victor Pena took a pass from Juan Guzman and beat the Wolves goalie for the game winner. Minutes later, Jorge Lopez took a pass from Guzman and deflected his shot off a Wolves defender for the 2-0 lead. With under 3 minutes to play Tyler Ryan stole the ball at midfield and went the distance to beat the keeper near post 3-0. And a minute later, "Chiva" Jesus Felix got the first goal of his Varsity career, from a pass by JLo, to end the scoring at 4-0. Antonio Lara had the shutout in goal with some key saves, and the defense of Jaime Lara, Frank Brzeczek, Jesus Anaya and Aaron Rivera kept up their outstanding play.
The Jackrabbits will play Red Mountain in the SemiFinals.

REGION TITLE lost in shootout
The atmosphere at Mesa High for the Region Title game was electric. The stands were full of fans, and the game didn't disappoint. After Red Mtn took an early lead, Mesa battled back. Just after halftime, the Mountain Lions were awarded a questionable Penalty Kick that went wide of the goal. With 10 minutes remaining Mesa was awarded its own Penalty kick, where Jaime Lara converted to tie the score. After a scoreless overtime, the two teams went to kicks, where it could go either way. Both teams made their 1st four shots, and after Red Mtn's 5th shooter converted, Mesa's 5th shooter had his kick saved and the game was over.

SENIOR NIGHT!
Senior night proved to be all about the Seniors as the Jackrabbits beat Westwood 4-0. All 4 of the Jackrabbit goals were scored by seniors - Robert Solomonson, Jorge Lopez, Mason Crandell and Rene Cardona. But next years seniors (this year's juniors) were not to be outdone as they provided all 4 helpers (assists) to the senior goals. Betto Renteria dished out 2 of the assists and Frank Brzeczek and Tyler Ryan each added one on throw-ins. Congrats on a successful career seniors and good luck wherever you go on to play in the future.

Jackrabbits fall in Shootout
The Jackrabbit soccer team advanced to the championship of the consolation bracket of the Diablo Classic against Corona del Sol Friday night, but fell in a shootout 3-2. With a tired and somewhat injured team, Mesa was able to navigate through pool play by beating Desert Mountain 2-0 behind Penalty kick goals by Jaime Lara and Robert Solomonson, and beating Chandler 2-1 behind goals by Ruben Gonzalez and Tyler Ryan. Finishing second in their pool, the Jackrabbits took on Gilbert without Coach T.J. Hagen, who missed due to a shoulder surgery. J.V. coach Mike Schmidt and Assistant Coach Jter Hagen filled in admirably and were able to guide the team to a 2-0 win behind goals by Gonzalez and Victor Pena, and a standout effort by the defense. Advancing to the Championship game of the Consolation bracket, the Jackrabbits got a rematch against the Aztecs who won an earlier meeting 2-0. Missing players due to injury and illness, Mesa got the early lead in the 2nd half on a goal by Juan Guzman. But Corona tied it with under 15 minutes to go, and the 2 teams went to overtime scoreless, and then to the shootout. In the shootout, both teams scored their first kick, but then the next 2 Mesa shooters were denied by the Corona Goalkeeper. Mesa keeper Antonio Lara made a save to keep Mesa in it, but the last Mesa shooter was saved giving the win to the Aztecs. All in all, the Jackrabbits have played 7 games in 9 days, winning 5 of them. It's a great start to the season and the Jackrabbits will try to do it all over again next week in the Jackrabbit Tournament.

Alumni Game fun
The Annual Alumni game was held Friday at Mesa High and we had more than 25 ex-Jackrabbits out to participate. It was a great time as the young guys put it to the "old farts". But in the end, the last goal was the game winner as the oldtimers finished it off. Thanks to everyone who made it out and we'll see you back next year.
|
Teams to Watch
More press coming the way of the Jackrabbits as they are named one of the 5 teams to watch this season by the East Valley Tribune. Goalkeeper Antonio Lara and his brother, Defender Jaime Lara are also named as players to watch this season. Congratulations on these outstanding pre-season honors.

Scrimmage a success
The Jackrabbits' scrimmage against #1 ranked Millenium was a big success as Mesa went on to a 3-1 victory (although scores aren't actually kept). Scoring goals for Mesa were Jorge Lopez (free kick), Victor Pena (header) and Miguel Rojo (goal mouth scramble). The ball control and passing were a great sight to see as Mesa was able to possess the ball and move it around really well. The classy Millenium soccer program (who was ranked by the Az. Republic in the pre-season as the 4A Division I favorite) made the long trek out to Jackrabbit Stadium and played a tough game. This was just what the Jackrabbits needed to see from themselves as they open the season against pre-season ranked #2 Corona del Sol at 6:00 pm on Tuesday night at Corona.

ALUMNI GAME!!
The ANNUAL Mesa High Soccer Alumni game will be this Friday morning at 9:00 am at the Soccer Stadium. Any former Mesa Soccer players are invited to attend and participate if you still can. Don't forget those Tax-Credits!!!

Pre-Season Rankings
The Arizona Republic has already printed their Pre-Season soccer rankings and the Mesa Jackrabbits are ranked #5 in 5A Division I. This is the highest pre-season ranking the boys team has achieved in the history of the program. Coach T.J. Hagen said "We are extremely honored to be ranked in the top 5 before the season starts, but that's exactly what it is. We haven't played a game yet, and we are set to scrimmage the #1 team in 4A I (Millenium), we start with the #2 team in 5A I and then get the #4 team in 5A I during the Fiesta classic Tournament. We will truly see if we are worthy of such a high ranking."
The top 5 teams in 5A I are #1 Brophy, #2 Corona del Sol, #3 Salpointe, #4 Desert Vista and #5 Mesa.

It's time to get kickin!

Millenium is just a couple seasons removed from having won a state championship and has been a constant contender for the crown in the 4A ranks. It looks to be a good matchup for the Jackrabbits to see where they are this early in the season.

Season ends in the mud
The Boys Soccer season ended against their region rival Dobson with a 3-2 loss in the first round of state. Although the field conditions were the same for both teams, Dobson's height benefitted the Mustangs by being able to keep the ball out of the mud, whereas the Mesa game plan of speed and ball control was hindered. After getting behind 1-0, Robert Solomonson used his "behind" to deflect a ball in the net to tie it at 1-1. Again after trailing 2-1, Jorge Lopez found the back of the net with a great shot to make it 2-2. But just moments later Mesa defenders slipped in the penalty area, allowing a Dobson player to find himself all alone in front of the goal and was able to put it by Goalkeeper Antonio Lara for the final 3-2 margin.
Great season guys and Congratulations on your Region title!
|
State to start against Dobson
All the hard work the Jackrabbits put in to try to get a home game in the first round of the playoffs went for naught as Mesa will travel to Dobson to play Tuesday night at 6:30 in the opening round of the State Playoffs. Finishing tied with Gilbert at #9 in the Power rankings, the Jackrabbits were seeded 10th based on earlier loss to the Tigers, and will have to travel to visit the Mustangs on Tuesday night in a rematch that saw Mesa beat Dobson 4-2.
Admission will be charged to get into the game, and the tournament is Single elimination.
If Mesa wins, they will play at 10 am on Saturday at Tempe Sports Complex in the 2nd round.
|
Loss to Toros in Double Overtime
The Jackrabbits and Toros hooked up again, and it was deja vu all over. For the 5th straight time the teams played into Overtime. With a game that didn't mean anything for Mesa - in terms of powerpoint rankings or for State Playoff seedings - the Jackrabbit starters got plenty of rest, but still kept the game within reach. But with just over 40 seconds remaining in the the 2nd overtime, the Toros were able to get a corner kick headed on to goal, where a Mesa defender tried to clear it and eventually deflected the ball into the goal, giving the Toros the victory. The loss gives the boys some rest going into the State Playoffs.
|
Mesa moves to 2nd Round
The Jackrabbits moved on to the 2nd round of the Region Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Westwood Tuesday night. Mesa will play against Mt. View Thursday night at 6:00 at Mesa High. Scoring for Mesa were Victor Pena, Jimmie Lara, Daylen Ray and Mason Crandell. Jorge Lopez and Miguel Gutierrez each handed out 2 assists, and Antonio Lara had the shutout in goal.
|
Victory over Dobson gives share of Title
Mesa is Back to Back Region champion! With the hard fought 4-2 victory over Dobson on Friday night, Mesa earned a share of the region championship, along with Dobson and Red Mtn. Playing in a must win game in order to defend their crown, the Jackrabbits did enough to win only their 2nd title in the history of the program.
Based on the powerpoint standings, the Jackrabbits will be seeded 2nd in the Region playoffs and will play Tuesday against Westwood at 6:00 at Mesa High.
Check back here for more information as it is received.

Tough loss for Mesa
The Jackrabbits travelled to Red Mtn Wed. night with the idea that a win would put them in the region title game Friday against Dobson. One a very cold and windy night, Mesa played relatively even with Red Mtn. for the first half. But a Mesa throw in that Robert Solomonson headed toward goal found the back of the net when Frank Brzeczek got to the ball and headed it past the Lions goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. That lead would hold up until 13 minutes left in the contest when an apparent offside (confirmed by Mesa staff on video) led to the Mt. Lions netting a header to tie the score. All the work Mesa put in went for nought as Red Mtn had the momentum and would score again just over a minute later for a 2-1 lead. Mesa finished strong but couldn't put another one in the net and left bitterly disappointed. The Jackrabbits have a chance to spoil Dobson's Region title hopes with a win on Friday, and look forward to a possible tie for first with a victory.
|
Jackrabbits too fast for the Lobos
Mesa traveled to Avondale to take on La Joya in a classic battle of Nature - the Jackrabbits versus the Lobos (wolves). But Mesa would win this battle 5-3 in a sloppy game. Mesa went against the wind in the 1st half but was able to take the lead midway through with a blistering shot by Daylen Ray to the upper right corner of the net from about 25 yards out. Later in the half, Ray recieved a caution and sat out so as to preserve his eligibility for the game Wed. against Red. Mtn. Also late in the half goalkeeper Antonio Lara made a save in which he hit his head on the ground and had to leave the game. The second half started without the 2 key players and captains, but Robert Solomonson was able to get his body on a ball and deflect it into the net for a 2-0 lead. The Lobos fought back and tied the game at 2 with goals just minutes apart around the 50th minute. Both Ray and Lara re-entered the game and quickly paid dividends. Mason Crandell scored twice and a beautiful pass from Frank Brzeczek to Victor Pena resulted in a goal to give Mesa a 5-2 lead. La Joya got a late one back but couldn't do anymore and the Jackrabbits hopped on out of West Phoenix with the 5-3 win.

Mesa goes 3-0 last week
The Jackrabbit boys finished the week 5-1...... wait, 3-0. The score for every game last week was 5-1. After a tough, hard fought victory over Mt. View Tuesday, the boys went to rival Westwood hoping to be able to heal up for the stretch run. But Westwood made a game of it. With Mesa controlling the ball for most of the first half in Westwood territory, the warriors were able to score on a counter attack and put the Jackrabbits on their heels. Mesa stepped it up even more in the second half and Daylen Ray was able to put one in the net in the 55th minute to tie the score. Seven minutes later, Ray's scoring partner Mason Crandell netted the go ahead goal. The score remained close until the last 5 minutes where Mesa was able to pull away on a second goal by Ray as well as one by Frank Brzeczek and a goal in 9 seconds - off a Westwood kickoff - by sophomore Miguel Rojo, to make the final 5-1.
Then, Friday night was Senior Night against Central, as the seniors were honored for their play at Mesa High. The team came out ready to play and scored 3 goals in the first half, as David Hermansen, Victor Pena and Mason Crandell all got on the board. In the second half, it was more of the same as the Jackrabbits dominated and goals were scored by Daylen Ray and Robert Solomonson. The reserves came on and with under 3 minutes remaining Central was able to prevent the shutout with a goal. With the final score 5-1 the Jackrabbits will play 4 games this week with 2 crucial games possibly for the region title against Red Mtn. and Dobson.

Overtime Thriller
January 9, 2008 - 01:30 PM --
Anytime Mesa and Mt. View get together you can bet on at least one thing - it's gonna be exciting. And the past four times the teams have played you can bet on another - it's gonna go to overtime!
With the start of region play, the Toros and Jackrabbits battled it out to get those crucial region wins. The Toros were the beneficiary of a questionable Penalty Kick the first half and went up 1-0 - even though Mesa was the more aggressive team. The Jackrabbits couldn't crack the Toro tall defense and seemed doomed to lose the match because of the PK. But with 4 minutes remaining, Defender Mason Crandell, along with just about every other Mesa player on the field, crowded the penalty area and got a header on a goal mouth scramble to tie it at 1. Once again we were headed to overtime. Just under 2 minutes into the 1st OT period, Daylen Ray had a partial breakway and his blasted shot rebounded off the Mt. View keeper right to Miguel Gutierrez's head for the 2-1 lead. Not more than 2 minutes later, a shot banged off the crossbar, straight up in the air where Frank Brzeczek headed the ball - along with colliding with the keeper - into the back of the net to make it 3-1. The Toros had the wind knocked out and in the 2nd overtime, Jorge Lopez was able to get 2 goals to make the final 5-1. What a game!!

Mesa starts new year off with split
January 5, 2008 --
The Jackrabbits started 2008 with a split of a pair of games against teams from Gilbert. First up was the rivalry between Mesa and the Gilbert Tigers. With so many new players to the team, the younger guys weren't aware of the past history between these two schools. Going back all the way to the late '90s when the "bad" blood started with Red cards and pushing and shoving amongst the players, to the sour taste in the mouths of Mesa players after losing in the 2nd round of state several years ago, to the infamous incident 3 years ago, this has been a rivalry not many teams have. Gilbert came out from the start and controlled the game. Scoring 2 goals in the first half off of throw-ins, the Tigers led at the half. Most of the Mesa players had no idea how tough of a game it was going to be. Then in the first minute of the 2nd half, the Gilbert sideline lineswoman said she couldn't see if the ball went out of bounds, Gilbert played on (although clearly out by both teams eyes) and was able to go up 3-0 early on. Mesa woke up to the type of game this was becoming, and played even with or better than Gilbert in the 2nd half. With about 8 minutes to go, Mesa got a free kick about 20 yards out and while the Jackrabbit forwards and midfielders were discussing what to do, as Gilbert was lining up to defend, Freshman defender Aaron Rivera came up and knocked a wicked knuckling ball over the keeper for the goal and final score of 3-1. Now these guys know what a Mesa vs. Gilbert game is all about.
The next night the Jackrabbits hosted Desert Ridge - who played Mesa tough in a 2-1 loss in last year's tournament. Mesa came out fired up and was able to get 3 goals in the first half from each of their forwards David Hermansen, Victor Pena and Mason Crandell. With the game under control, and after Miguel Gutierrez scored in the 2nd half to go up 4-0, Mesa was awarded a penalty kick which defender Jesus Barrera (who never takes PKs) came up to hit. The shot was saved but Daylen Ray scored off the rebound to make it 5-0. Robert Solomonson riccocheted his shot off a Jaguar defender to make the score 6-0 and the subs were preparing to enter the game. Before Coach Hagen could put them in, Desert Ridge got one back with just under 20 minutes left. Out came the starters and in went EVERYONE, including Barerra who went in to Goal. Mesa would get another PK, which was taken by Senior John Chacon. His shot went off the crossbar and kept the game at 6-1. Slowly but surely, the Jaguar starters chipped away at the Mesa lead, eventually getting it to 6-4 before the starters went back out to seal the game with 3 minutes to go.

Mesa finished Tournament on positive note
December 22, 2007 - 05:00 PM --
The Jackrabbits finished their own invitational tournament with a 2nd place finish in the Championship game against Thunderbird, with a 3-1 loss. In a rematch of last year's semi-finals, the Rabbits got on the board first as Rene Cardona lifted a high bending shot from the top left corner of the box, over the head of the Chiefs goalkeeper. Late in the half, defender Daylen Ray injured his ankle and was unable to play the rest of the game. That would come back to hurt Mesa as Thunderbird would rally to tie it in the 1st minute of the 2nd half and take the lead not long after that. With Mesa pushing for an equalizer, a Jackrabbit defender tripped a Chief forward in the box, giving them a PK which they converted for the final margin of 3-1. Congratulations to both the Jackrabbits and Chiefs for an exciting Championship game.
Earlier results from the Tournament saw the Rabbits beat Skyline 4-0 as Robert Solomonson got his first career goal. Also scoring for Mesa were Frank Brzeczek, Jesus Garcia and Rene Cardona. Then Mesa tied North 2-2 with Victor Pena and Miguel Gutierrez scoring the goals. And the final game of pool play saw Mesa beat Mt. Ridge 5-1. Goal scorers include Daylen Ray who had 2, Mason Crandell with 1 and Roberto Reneteria with his first 2 goals as a varsity player - the first coming on a play where he outdribbled 4 defenders and then beat the goalie to the far post.
Mesa now takes some much needed time off and will be back to start the second half of the season with a game at Gilbert on January 3rd.

Mesa gives Pinnacle a game
December 15, 2007 - 12:00 PM --
Although the score may not show it, the Jackrabbits definitely played tough against a very talented Pinnacle team. Ranked #1 in 5A II and undefeated, the Pioneers boasted the State's All-Time goal scoring leader in Kyle Ciliento. Right away Mesa showed it wanted to play as they were able to win several 50/50 balls and even had a couple of shots on goal - including a goal mouth scramble. Ciliento then had a clean breakway which goalkeeper Antonio Lara came up huge with an outstanding save to keep it at 0-0. But with just minutes left in the 1st half, a Pinnacle midfielder broke free and curled a shot into the side netting from about 20 yards out. Ciliento then got through the Mesa defense to make the score 2-0 at half. Being down to start the 2nd half the boys came out a little more offensive, but couldn't get anything by the Pioneer keeper. Jaime Lara had another rocket from 25 yards out go off the crossbar early in the half and Frank Brzeczek had a breakaway but had his jersey tugged and could never get off a clean shot. Pinnacle's other talented forward dribbled throught the defense and scored to make it 3-0. Pushing forward for a goal, the Rabbits allowed Ciliento to get a ball by the defense, knocking down a Mesa defender in the process, and scored with 6 seconds left for the final margin of 4-0. Mason Crandell did an outstanding job of defending the State's Gatorade Player of the year and Lara was phenomenal in goal.

No game vs. Tucson
December 11, 2007 - 10:00 AM --
The game vs. Tucson for Tuesday December 11th has been tentatively cancelled. The Tucson boys teams drove up to Mesa thinking the game was to be held Monday December 10th. But with no advance change and no way of getting officials to call the game on such short notice, the team was sent back down to where they came from. In talking with representatives from the Badgers the reason why they can not come back to play on Tuesday is because they have to play Salpointe on Wednesday. Comments from Mesa representatives about Tucson's reasons for not coming back included the fact that Mesa went to Tucson to play Flowing Wells (on the 1st day back from Holiday break) last year, but had to turn around and play Gilbert (an always tough rival and top state contender) the very next night, and to top it off then play Mt. View (a region contest) the night after that. 3 games in 3 consecutive nights, against 3 quality opponents. So the reasoning doesn't sound solid or fair. Anyway, no make-up date has been announced, with Mesa's schedule already packed in January from rescheduled games. It may be held the week of Dec 17th-19th - we'll keep you posted.

Jackrabbits bounced from Diablo Tourney
December 6, 2007 - 12:00 PM --
After a 15 year absence from the Tempe Diablo soccer classic, the Mesa boys soccer team was eliminated from the tournament by the Chandler Wolves 3-1. After some unlucky plays helped Chandler to a 2-0 lead in the 1st half, the wolves came out and got the knockout goal just 20 seconds into the 2nd half. Miguel Rojo earned a penalty kick in the 2nd half and Daylen Ray once again converted the kick for the final margin of 3-1. It was a great experience to finally play some of the state's best in an early season tournament and Mesa only hopes it will have better prepared them for the coming season. Good luck the rest of the way.

Diablo Classic Results
December 5, 2007 - 09:00 AM --
The boys soccer team is playing in the Tempe Diablo Soccer Classic, formerly known as the Fiesta Bowl Tournament. Placed in Pool A with Desert Vista, Chandler and Desert Mountain, the boys knew it would be a difficult tournament to advance in. So far the Jackrabbits are 1-1 in pool play following a loss to #8 ranked Desert Vista 2-0 and a win over previously ranked Desert Mountain 3-1. In the D.V. game, the boys came out hard with most of the first half possession in the offensive end, but had no real chances to score. Late in the first half the thunder got a breakaway and scored to make it 1-0. In the second half Mesa couldn't put it together and while pushing for a late score to tie the game, the Thunder got another breakaway goal to finish the game at 2-0. It was great to see the team battle the likes of a quality squad - and past state champion - in a tough tournament. On Tuesday, Mesa knew it's chances to advance hinged on beating a Desert Mountain squad which lost to Chandler in the opener 5-0 - after 5 second half goals. The first half was again dominated by the Jackrabbits, but no goals came. Late in the half, Mesa gave up a Penalty kick which the Wolves converted to take an early 1-0 lead. At halftime it was gut-check time. The Jackrabbits came out with Victor Pena feeding David Hermansen for his first American goal, the score was knotted at 1-1. Several minutes later, following a corner kick from Aaron Rivera, the ball bounced out to Defender Jaime Lara whose rocket blast from 25 yards out scored to give Mesa a 2-1 advantage. To finish the scoring, midfielder Jorge Lopez was fouled in the box and captain Daylen Ray finished the Penalty Kick to seal the win 3-1. The boys play Chandler tonite at 4:00 pm, with a win needed to advance to the knockout round. Good Luck Jackrabbits.

Mesa rebounds with big game
November 30, 2007 - 10:00 AM --
The Mesa boys rebounded after their loss to Corona with a dominating 6-1 win over Maryvale in a very heated and sloppy game. The field conditions were less than ideal with the field soaking wet and muddy all over, but the Jackrabbits were able to put pressure on the Panthers early as Juan Guzman found Oswaldo Celis for the 1st goal of the game off a corner kick. Then it would be Victor Pena finding the net off a rebound and finishing the scoring in the 1st half was Guzman with a free kick deflected off of a Panther defender. Unfortunately for Mesa, late in the half Maryvale was able to avoid an offside call and got a goal. But in the Second half David Hermansen was fouled in the box and senior Daylen Ray made Maryvale pay with the Penalty Kick. Ray again found the net after a Tyler Ryan throw-in found Robert Solomonson's head who flicked it on to Ray for the score. It was then the reserves opportunity to shine as Josh Christianson's throw-in bounced over Frank Brzcezek to a running Miguel Rojo who finished the breakaway for the final score. Antonio Lara had 7 saves in net to solidify Mesa. The Jackrabbits are 1-1 on the season and will play Desert Vista next week in the 1st game of the Diablo Classic - a tournament Mesa has not been in for 15 years.
|
The 2007-08 soccer season got off to a rough start for the Jackrabbits with a 5-0 loss to the Corona del Sol Aztecs. In the first half Mesa looked just as good as the Aztecs with equal chances on goal for both teams. But Corona was able to make theirs count with a goal 15 minutes into the game and another one just several minutes later. Mesa had several good looks on goal with shots going just wide or saves being made by the Aztec goalkeeper. Mesa goalie Antonio Lara made some great saves to keep the Jackrabbits close at halftime. In the second half Corona was able to score early on taking any kind of energy out of the Jackrabbits and the Mesa crowd. In the end, most of the Mesa bench got playing time and the final score would be 5-0. Mesa looks to rebound Thursday at Maryvale.

Alumni game a huge draw
This year's Mesa High Alumni game drew the largest turnout in it's history. With over 30 Soccer Alumni, including some girls, showing up, this year's game was a big success. Well, at least for the young grads. Once again playing young (grads from '01 to '07, and some beyond) vs. old (grads from '01 and before), the young guys showed they still got it while the old guys showed they're gettin older. As the youngsters took the lead on goals by players such as Ryan Klein ('03) and others, the old guys were able to get back in the game and looked poised to make the comeback after Coach T.J. Hagen ('91) scored from just beyond the midfield circle. But an own goal by the Old guys and the game ending header (just like he used to do) by Blake Ray ('02) sealed the deal. All in all it was great to see everyone and we look forward to doing it all again next year - same time, same place.
|
The Boys soccer season officially begins tonite as the Jackrabbits host the Corona del Sol Aztecs. JV begins at 4:00 pm while the Varsity takes the field at 6:00 pm. Corona finished last year ranked 7th in powerpoints and lost in the Quarterfinals of the State playoffs, while Mesa finished ranked 9th and lost to Basha in the first round of the state playoffs. Corona has long been a strong program with several state championships and Mesa has been a force over the past 4 years, building up to their first ever Region title last year. The last meeting between the 2 teams was the 1st round of the State Playoffs in 2003, with Corona winning 6-0. Tonite we'll find out just how far the Jackrabbits have come. It should be a good one.

The scrimmage held against Millenium turned out to be a success for the Jackrabbits. Playing a friendly for the 3rd time against one of the top programs in 4A, the Jackrabbits were able to see the kind of squad they will be putting on the field in 2007-08. Everyone got a chance to get on the field in the game, while coach Hagen had a chance to evaluate his top players against top talent. Final score - unofficially - 3-2 in favor of Mesa, while both teams also went to a shootout to prepare for the upcoming season, with Mesa prevailing 4-2. Good luck this season guys. And a huge thank you to the Millenium Tigers - always a class program and quality team.

Loss to Basha ends Jackrabbits' Season
January 31, 2007 - 10:00 AM --
The Mesa Boys soccer season came to an abrupt and unexpected end Tuesday night against a tough Basha Bear squad with a 4-2 loss. Although the Jackrabbits had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, they couldn't hold on to advance in the State championship bracket. David Garcia netted his 16th goal of the season, tying him for second most all-time in a season, and Dustin Clarke also scored his 8th of the season in the loss. congratulations Jackrabbits on a historic season and we'll be looking for the End of season awards to see some of our outstanding players recognized.

Mesa finishes 3rd in Region Tournament
January 28, 2007 - 02:00 PM --
Mesa faced off in a meaningless 3rd place consolation match in the E.V. Region tournament against Dobson Saturday. The last time the 2 teams met was just over a week ago on less than ideal field conditions, and Dobson came out on top with a tough 2-1 victory. In that game starting Mesa defender Rigo Salazar was ejected midway throught the 1st half. This time the Mustangs were the visitor at Red Mtn. High School, but once again the field conditions were less than ideal. With standing water puddles and wet conditions all over the field the Jackrabbits and Mustangs tangled at 9:00 in the morning, with Mesa coming out on top 1-0. Ricky Lutz seems to like playing against the 'Stangs as he scored again - the only player to score against Dobson for Mesa - in the first half to get the game winner. Antonio Lara had 6 saves in goal for the shutout, as both teams were missing starters due to various reasons, but Salazar and fellow outside defender Irving "Guero" Vega held Dobson scoreless.

Tough PK loss sends boys to 3rd place game
January 26, 2007 - 10:30 AM --
The boys soccer team suffered a disappointing defeat to Mt. View Thursday night in Penalty Kicks. After getting down 2-0 in the first half, the Jackrabbits fought back with goals by Daylen Ray and David Garcia in the second half. The two teams went to overtime still tied and for the 3rd time in the last 3 games against the Toros, they went to Penalty kicks to solve the tie. The 3rd time must have been the charm though as Mt. View came away with the victory.

REGION CHAMPIONS!
January 18, 2007 - 05:00 PM --
It took a long time coming - 27 years to be exact - the 1st ever Region Title in Boys Soccer was finally earned with the 8-0 victory over Westwood on Wednesday night. Also earning the 200th victory in school history for the Boys soccer program, the 2006-07 Boys Varsity team has made history. This title was not only for themselves, but for the program that has had many ups and downs - with more ups lately than downs. For former coaches Steve Ramos, Mike Madril and John Sandoval and all the players who have ever graced the field at Mesa High, this win was for you. Congratulations Mesa High Varsity soccer.

Mesa continues region tear
January 12, 2007 - 09:00 AM --
The Jackrabbit soccer team continued it's winning ways in the Region with a 3-0 victory over Skyline and a 2-0 victory over Red Mtn.
In the Skyline game, it was Senior Night. Parents showed up to support their seniors who had played their last regular season home game of their career. Senior Edy Farfan, who has been out all season with a knee injury, was given a special start on the field as an honor to his great accomplishments as a player while on the field. The Jackrabbits played the kickoff out of bounds as Skyline was a generous competitor and allowed Farfan to be substituted out. Once the game was on, both teams took it at each other. Skyline had 2 good chances in the 1st half but saw the ball roll wide of the goal on both occasions. While Mesa Sophomore Juan Guzman took a shot from the top of the box and it deflected off of a Skyline player and into the net for the 1-0 halftime lead. In the 2nd half the Jackrabbits stepped up the pressure and were rewarded when Daylen Ray's header was flicked on toward goal but a Skyline defender intentionally handled the ball and MEsa was awarded a Penalty Kick. Devan Robinson stood at the mark and knocked in the shot to make it 2-0. And finally David Garcia got a pass inside the box and remained calm, cool and collected as he beat the Skyline keeper to finish off the game at 3-0. Antonio Lara once again had several key saves to remain perfect in goal.
At Red Mtn., the boys were pumped up knowing that they have the lead in the region standings and a victory will move them one step closer to the Region title. With a light wind blowing in, Mesa was at the disadvantage the 1st half. But the defense held strong and Goalie Antonio Lara came up with couple of key stops to keep the Lions out of the net. Daylen Ray and Mason Crandell then hooked up on a goal to make it 1-0 at halftime. The team had the wind at their back the 2nd half and used it to their advantage by keeping the ball in Mtn. Lion territory. Juan Cruz fed David Garcia a ball across the field and he ripped a shot to the back post for the 2-0 lead. Lara again made several stop down the stretch and Mesa held on for the shutout and the 3-0 region record.
With Dobson losing to Skyline, and Mesa holding the tie-breaker over both Mt. View and Skyline, it could be an interesting final week of region play. The Jackrabbits will travel to Westwood on Wednesday and Dobson on Friday to close out their region season.

3 games, 3 days, 3 wins
January 5, 2007 - 10:00 PM --
After having the toughest 3 day stretch of the season, the Jackrabbits came away tired, bruised and sore, but victorious.
Travelling to Tucson Flowing Wells on Wednesday - the day the team went back to school - Mesa came back with a tough 2-1 victory. David Garcia took a pass in the middle of the field and dribbled through several defenders before having the ball riccochet off of a Caballero player back to him and then beating the keeper high over his shoulder for the 1-0 lead. Ricky Lutz came up to take a long throw in and got the ball back from Daylen Ray then unleashed a shot through traffic that found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. A Caballero forward took advantage of a defensive miscue and beat Goalkeeper Antonio Lara to make the score 2-1 at half. In the 2nd half, both teams traded chances but Lara was injured with just about 10 minutes to go in the game and freshman Tyler Ryan came in to back him up. But just minutes later, Ryan was also injured in a goal box collision. He stayed in the game and the Jackrabbits were able to hold off a strong Flowing Wells charge to win 2-1.
On Thursday it was payback time. 2 years ago Mesa had a 2-0 lead in the State Playoffs, only to see Gilbert rally for 3 unanswered goals and advance. Last year Gilbert showed up to take on an undefeated 13-0 Mesa team, and walked away with a hard fought 3-1 victory. This year, after some bad blood between some of the teams players, Mesa traveled to Gilbert to face the Tigers during their Winter Break. The excitement was in the air as both teams fans showed up to support their squads. Mesa got on the board in the first half when David Garcia took the ball down the left side and sent a cross to the middle of the field, toward the top of the 18 yard box. Although it didn't look like anyone could get to it, Daylen Ray leaned into the ball and headed it past the Gilbert netminder for an exciting 1-0 lead going into halftime. Both teams came out with a sense of urgency in the 2nd half as Mesa got on the board for the 2-0 lead when Devan Robinson's Corner kick found Juan Cruz who one timed a kick into the twine. But Gilbert's relentless attack would not be denied as the 2 forwards hooked up on a nice goal to cut the lead to 2-1 with just under 8 minutes to play. But as was the case all night long, Goalkeeper Antonio Lara made save after save, inlcuding 2 off the goal line with under 2 minutes to play to conserve the huge victory. Cooler heads prevailed this year at the end of the game and Mesa and Gilbert may end up meeting each other again somewhere down the road.
And lastly, for the 2nd year in a row it was shootout time in the game against Mt. View. Playing their 3rd game in 3 days, the Jackrabbits looked tired and out of sync. But holding off a good Mt. View attack the first half, Mesa went into halftime tied at 0. At halftime the Jackrabbits talked about picking up the intensity and effort and a nice wind at the back during the second half helped Mesa finally get on the board. David Garcia took a pass in the center of the field just outside the penalty area and shot a ball that deflected off a Toro defender, fooling the Toro keeper, into the net for a 1-0 lead. The Toros became frustrated as the Referee handed out several cards, including a Red card to a Toro defender as he purposely hacked Mesa forward Rene Cardona. The Jackrabbits had several more chances to score but couldn't control the ball on 2 particular one on one's with the goalie. Mesa was able to hold off the Mt. View charge until Defender Dustin Clarke was whistled for a foul at the top of the Mesa box with 1:21 left in the game. A Mt. View forward took the free kick and somehow found the near side netting. The ball apparantly went through the side of the net as the referee indicated a goal had been scored. After conferring with the sideline referee, and then Mesa head coach T.J. Hagen, the center referee had considered the "physics" of the shot to have been very difficult for it to have gone in, but the goal stood. And we were headed to overtime. Both teams pressured but were denied and for the 2nd time in as many games, the Toros and Jackrabbits were going to a shootout. Confusion reigned as Toro sideline players were also on the field huddling around the team and the referees were unsure who were the last players on the field to be able to take the penalty kicks. After it was all sorted out, Mesa was shooting 2nd. Mt. View's 1st and 2nd shooters made their shots as did the Mesa shooters - Devan Robinson and Ricky Lutz. However, Mesa's rock in goal lately - Antonio Lara - made a save on the thrid shooter, and David Garcia and Dustin Clarke both made their shots to make the game a 4-4 tie, with only one shooter left. The Jackrabbit junior Daylen Ray calmly walked to the "spot" and placed his shot in the back of the net for the 2-1 final score and the victory.
Mesa is now 15-2 and 1-0 in the Region, awaiting Skyline for Senior night on Tuesday. Great job Jackrabbits and good luck in the rest of region play - hopefully on your way to a region title.

Mesa takes 3rd place
December 23, 2006 - 10:00 PM --
The Jackrabbits took 3rd place at their own Invitational Tournament. After a tough Semi-Final loss against the eventual champions, the Thunderbird Chiefs, Mesa found themselves facing Yuma Kofa in the 3rd-4th place game. Playing in sloppy field conditions, after it rained all evening the night before, the Kings got on the board quickly, just 20 seconds into the game. Not more than a mimute later, the Jackrabbits found themselves down 2-0. But Mesa would settle down and make a charge the rest of the first half, but were unable to score. At halftime, Coach Hagen changed up the lineup to attack the Kofa defense more and it quickly paid off. Dustin Clarke got a loose ball in the Kofa box and put it away for the 1st Mesa goal. Several minutes later Daylen Ray got an errant pass about 30 yards out and blasted a shot over the Kings goalie to tie the game at 2. With just over 10 minutes left, Jaime Chavez corraled a deflected shot and knocked in the rebound to give Mesa the final margin of Victory 3-2. The Jackrabbits head into a much needed break with a 12-2 record, hoping to get many of their injured players healthy once again.
In the Semi-Final, the Jackrabbits and Chiefs started the game during the constant rain storm that had been coming down all day. The sloppy field conditions didn't help either team, but a 35 yard bomb by Thunderbird's Zac Richards beat Mesa goalie Tyler Ryan (stepping in for Antonio Lara who was injured in the Desert Ridge game) for a 1-0 halftime lead. Mesa stepped up the pressure in the second half but could not solve the Chief netminder. Ivan Dizdar, Thunderbird's goalie, stopped shot after shot, many of which were headed for the back of the net, much to the dismay of Mesa players, fans and coaches. It was not to be for Mesa as Richards once again launched another 30 yarder to beat Ryan again and the Jackrabbits ended up on the short end of the scoreboard 2-0.

Mesa to play in Semi's
December 22, 2006 - 10:00 AM --
The Jackrabbits took care of Pool play Thursday with a 3-0 win over Alhambra and a 2-1 victory over Desert Ridge to win Pool A and advance to the 6:00 pm Semi-Finals of the tournament once again. In the 7 years of the tournaments' exsistence, Mesa has played in the finals every year, winning the last 3 years and with 5 championships total. It won't be easy as they will play a tough Thunderbird squad who finished ranked 5th last year in 4A Division I. In the other Semi-final Kofa will take on a tournament regular in Casa Grande.
In the Alhambra game, David Garcia, Juan Cruz and Daylen Ray all scored as the defense once again posted a shutout. In the night cap against Desert Ridge, the Jackrabbits got on the board twice in the first half as David Garcia beautifully headed in a Devan Robinson corner kick, and then Rene Cardona took a Juan Guzman pass and buried it into the far post for the 2-0 lead. Mesa used its bench to get some playing time in the second half, but gave up a Penalty kick late to leave the final margin at 2-1.

Tournament off and running
December 21, 2006 - 12:00 PM --
The Jackrabbit tournament has started and there have been some surprises. As the hosts, Mesa started with a 4-0 win over Sandra Day O'Connor. Jaime Chavez scored in the opening half that saw Mesa dominate play in the Eagle end. The second half started with a David Garcia goal just 20 seconds into the half. Daylen Ray took an Irving Vega pass down the center of the field for a 1 on 1 with the keeper, who saved the initial shot, but Ray was there to head in his own rebound for the 3-0 lead. And finally, freshman Tyler Ryan got his first Varsity goal after Robert Solomonson's shot banged off the crossbar and Ryan finished for the final margin of victory.
There were some interesting results from the first day of pool play : Undefeated Tolleson tied with Skyline 0-0. Agua Fria and Coronado tied 1-1 and Thunderbird needed a late goal to lift them past Higley 4-3. After the first day Apollo has the edge over Thunderbird in pool B, Tolleson and Skyline are battling it out in Pool C, Agua Fria and Coronado are deadlocked in Pool D, and Mesa and Alhambra play for the right to advance from Pool A today. With all of the tight games, it's anyone's tournament to win.

Mesa wins OT tough one
December 15, 2006 - 09:00 AM --
Going to overtime for the first time this season, Mesa decided they didn't want to go to Penalty kicks again. Devan Robinson's "sick" Direct Free kick from about 20 yards out to the right of the goal proved to be the game winner as the Jackrabbits escaped a tough match with the Basha Bears 3-2. Daylen Ray opened the scoring for Mesa in the first half, assisted by Robinson's Corner kick, with a rip that deflected off a Basha defender and into the goal. Basha would tie it up in the second half on a long throw-in play with much confusion in front of the net. Mesa again went ahead with under 10 minutes to play on a nice give and go by Jaime Chavez with Juan Cruz netting the goal. But Basha showed resiliency by scoring with 3 minutes to play. In the first overtime, Basha was whistled for a foul 5 minutes in at the top of the box. Robinson curled his free kick around the wall and into the back side netting, then ran to shush the crowd as Mesa celebrated. The Jackrabbits held on to the lead and ran their record to 7-1. Antonio Lara gets the win in goal with some very nice saves throughout the contest.

New Offense?
December 13, 2006 - 10:00 AM --
With several key players out with injuries and the line-up being shuffled around each game, the Jackrabbits may have finally found what they need to be successful this year - and it's been here all along. Dustin Clarke - the team's standout Goalkeeper for the past 3 years - had a breakout game on offense. Scoring all 4 goals in a 4-1 victory over Central, Dustin showed that he can not only save a shot, but that he can also put the ball in the back of the net. Getting assists from Irving "Guero" Vega, Marcos Gonzalez, Juan Cruz and Devan Robinson, Clarke moved to the top of the team leaderboard this year. After an early goal by the Bobcats, Mesa's Defense tightened up and Coach Hagen's masterful decision to move Clarke up front to get some scoring punch paid off. The team is now 6-1 on the year and plays against Basha Thursday night.

Quest for a repeat ends with Semifinal loss!
December 9, 2006 - 01:00 PM --
The Mesa Boys soccer team's quest for a Repeat championship performance was ended with a loss to Moon Valley in the Semifinals of the Moon Valley tournament. The game was hard fought to the very end. Scoring in the first minute was Rene Cardona off a Jaime Chavez assist. Moon Valley took advantage of the Mesa defense and scored on a free kick and then went ahead on a blast from the left side of the goal. Mesa tied it with a David Garcia header from marcos Gonzalez's throw in. After halftime, the Rockets went ahead again off a free kick but Juan Cruz tied it with under 5 minutes to go on a pass from Devan Robinson. In the shootout, Devan Robinson, Daylen Ray, David Garcia, and Dustin Clarke all made their kicks, but Edwin Tobar's kick was saved and the Rockets team made all of their kicks to advance to the Championship game against Cactus. Mesa has a 5-1 record and will travel to Central and Basha this week, and then host Sunrise Mtn on Friday.

Tournament going according to plan
December 8, 2006 - 10:00 AM --
As the Moon Valley Tournaments reigning Champions, the Jackrabbits are holding court with 3 shutout victories over their opponents. Beating Apollo 3-0, Desert Edge 5-0 and Greenway 8-0 the Jackrabbits are serving notice that they want to retain their title. IT won't be easy as they finish pool play against Arcadia, and will play Moon Valley in the Semi-Finals of the Tournament. Awaiting them if they make it to the Championship game will be either Cactus, Agua Fria or Pinnacle - all state title contenders in the 4A division. It should be an interesting end to the Tournament. Good luck Mesa!

Mesa starts off season with victory
November 29, 2006 - 12:00 PM --
The Boys Varsity team started off the 2006-07 season with a convincing 6-1 victory over the Yuma Criminals at Jackrabbit Stadium. In a very different outcome from last year's game between the 2 teams, Mesa started the scoring early and continued often. Mason Crandell made the most of his start at Forward, scoring a goal, off an assist from Jaime Chavez, just minutes in to the game. David Garcia blasted a 20 yard knuckling shot into the back right corner of the net to make it 2-0. Then Marco Escarcega took over with his Hat Trick. He scored the first of his goals on a shot from about 18 yards out, then finished the hard work Juan Cruz started and finally put a header over the outstretched fingers of the keeper. This made it 5-0 going into Halftime. The second half saw defender Ricky Lutz depositing a David Garcia pass into the net for the 6th goal. After the seeming insurmountable lead, the fans were treated to watching the "young" guys - and Mesa's future - take it to the Criminals. Although there were no goals scored, the next generation of Mesa players were truly a sight to look forward to. With starting goalie Dustin Clarke out of goal, and Eduardo Marquez making his first appearance for Varsity, Yuma scored a questionably timed goal as the horn sounded and time had expired. The referee awarded the Criminals the goal, denying Mesa the shutout. But it didn't matter. Mesa now heads into the Moon Valley Tournament next week as the reigning champ and with a 1-0 record.

Alumni Game a hit
November 27, 2006 - 11:00 AM --
This year's Alumni game, held Friday morning at Mesa High, was a blast. With Alumni from all the way back as far as 1988 showing up to play, the game was showcase for the old school style of soccer vs. the youngsters. Dividing the teams up into "Old" guys vs. the "Young" guys, we had all the makings of a classic battle with a 12 on 12 game. The youngsters - comprised of players who graduated in the year 2002 or later - took it to the old guys from the start, going up 2-0 early on goals by '02 grad Ryan Klein. But the old guys wouldn't be outdone, as the they came back on goals by '01 grad Preston Crandell and '90 grad Rich Patton. Klein scored again on a free kick - beating his coach and '91 grad T.J. Hagen in goal - giving him the Alumni hat trick (something he only had once in H.S. - against Desert Ridge). Crandell would score again for the old guys giving him 2 for the game, and '88 grad Christian Woolf got in on the act as well. '99 grad T.J. Smith scored an own goal for the youngsters, and the game was limited to the next goal scored - since many of the players were becoming short of breath. '95 grad Edwin Parada took the ensuing kickoff and launched a shot down the field that bounced over the head of '01 grad Bubba Judkins and into the goal for the game winner. The "old" guys breaking through this year Co-Players of the game go to Ryan Klein and Preston Crandell. Thanks to all the guys who showed up and we look forward to doing it again next year, same time same place.

Are you a Mesa High Soccer Alumni?
October 27, 2006 - 04:30 PM --
Did you play soccer at Mesa High? Well, the 11th annual Alumni soccer game is coming up. This November 24th at 9:00 am (as always, the day after Thanksgiving) lace up the boots and hit the pitch with fellow alumni in a friendly match to see how well those skills have fared over the years. It's your chance to meet up with and talk to all those old faces you remember and only get to see once a year. Catch up on the status of this year's Mesa High team as well as find out how we've done since you graduated.
Started by one of the very first coaches of High School soccer in Arizona - Steve Ramos - the alumni game was a common practice at Mesa High in the late 80's. Revived by fellow Mesa alumni and current head Coach T.J. Hagen in 1996, it has been going strong ever since. With 20 or more alumni showing up over the past several years it is a way to connect the past with the present. Even some of the players from the early and late 80's have shown up over the years, with the majority of players showing up having played for coach Hagen within the last 10 years.
This year's game will be another opportunity to have some fun and reminisce. So what if you're 5 or 10 years older, or 50 pounds heavier, everyone is welcome - even if you just want to sit and watch. We hope to see you there. And don't forget to think about a Tax Credit donation for the program that was once your place for the "Glory Days"!

Tryouts are over and the Varsity team has been selected. This year's team consists of 14 returning players and a handful of newcomers who will look to make a difference. Practices are going well as the team works to mesh well together. Team captains have been chosen as last year's captains Dustin Clarke, Edy Farfan and Ricky Lutz will once again lead the Jackrabbits toward a State Title. The team will get to see what they can do in a scrimmage against Millenium H.S. before they open the season against Yuma on Tuesday November 28th at home.

Jackrabbits Season Ends!
February 5, 2006 - 12:00 PM --
Mesa's record-setting season came to a heartbreaking end with a 3-0 loss to Salpointe in the Quarterfinals of the State Soccer Tournament. After a well played 0-0 first half, the boys had their spirits high going into the second half, especially against the Pre-Season #1 ranked team. But the Lancers appeared to have the better fitness level and with just over 20 minutes to play in the game, Salpointe struck to take a 1-0 lead. With Mesa pushing up to attack and try for an equalizer, the defense had to be sacrificed and the Lancers were able to counter attack. Defender Kyle Jones had to hand ball a shot in the box to stop it from going in the goal. The referee issued Jones an automatic red card and awarded a penalty kick, even though the ball initially appeared to have gone in the goal. It initially gave Mesa hope that they could save the kick and try to tie the game, even though they were a man down. But the probable State player of the year, Fernando Gauna from Salpointe, beat goalie Dustin Clarke to make it 2-0 with under 10 minutes left. Feeling they had nothing to lose, MEsa again pushed forward to try to get a goal, but with under a minute to play, the Lancers were able to score again, making the final outcome 3-0.
Mesa is proud of the outstanding season they had and only look forward to getting better next year with a host of players returning for another season.

Movin On!
February 1, 2006 - 12:00 PM --
The Jackrabbits are movin on into the second round of the Post-season. For the first time in almost 2 decades, the boys soccer team has made it to the Quarterfinals of the State Soccer Tournament following an unbelievable 2-1 victory in Penalty Kicks over the Dobson Mustangs. As the saying goes, beating a team 3 times in a season is never easy, and although the 2 previous meetings with the Mustangs this year ended up with Mesa winning by a 3 goal margin, this time it was to advance in the State Playoffs.
With the teams facing a "win or go home" outcome, both squads left everything they had on the field. From the get go the game was hard fought and physical as neither team would back down. Dobson got the upper-hand early as they were able to cross the ball through Mesa's penalty area where it found a Mustang players head and then the back of the net to go up 1-0. But the celebration was short lived as Kyle Jones was able to sneak a ball thru the Dobson defense to a streaking Theo Kwi. He put a move on the keeper and finished in the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1. The teams headed to halftime with that same score. As the second half began, again both teams came out hard and both had chances that landed just wide or high of the goal. Dobson got a huge opportunity when Mesa goalie Dustin Clarke was called for a hand ball outside the box after a Dobson player shot the ball right at the net-minder, hitting his hand as he was protecting himself. Back-up keeper Edwin Tobar jumped in cold and the ensuing free kick sailed just over the crossbar. Clarke re-entered the game and Mesa went back to the offensive with Theo Kwi working the defense several times with creative ball work, but the shots were not going in. Regulation ended and the teams headed to overtime where Dobson had the upperhand during the opening period, but still couldn't score, and Mesa came right back in the second overtime period - putting pressure on the Mustang defense. Overtime ended and the teams were headed to Penalty kicks to decide the victor.
In the Shootout, both Dobson and Mesa's Ricky Lutz made their first kicks. Then the game took a turn in favor of the 'Rabbits. Dobson's second shooter found out how good Mesa's keeper really is, as Clarke was able to save the shot. Daylen Ray, David Garcia and Edy Farfan all made their kicks for Mesa, as did Dobson's 3rd, 4th and 5th shooters setting up a 4-4 tie with only Mesa senior Theo Kwi to kick. Kwi stepped to the spot and faked the goalie by putting it in the right side of the net for the victory.

Region Tournament Champs!
January 30, 2006 - 01:00 PM --
Mesa High added to its history making season Friday and Saturday as they came home as Champions from the Region Tournament. Getting a small bit of redemption by earning the Tournament Title, the Jackrabbits head to the State Playoffs to continue their success.
In the Friday Semi-Final, the Jackrabbits took on Dobson. It was Theo Kwi and Edy Farfan leading the way early as each scored a goal in the opening half en route to a 2-0 lead at halftime. They both continued their scoring in the second half, with Kwi working the Mustang defense for a penalty kick, which he converted. With under 20 minutes to play the Mesa bench came onto sub, but the Mustangs wouldn't go quietly. Scoring 2 goals with just over 10 minutes left to play, the Mesa starters went back in to finish them off. Gustavo Munoz netted the final goal of the night as Mesa was finally safe.
In the Title game, against Skyline on Saturday, it had all the makings of a classic. Skyline was the Region champs, having beaten the 'Rabbits the last time the teams met. Mesa wanted a chance for redemption, and with the whole squad back to play unlike in their first meeting, the game was truly a slobberknocker. The 2 teams seemed evenly matched and after one half of play that was the case. Less than 10 minutes into the game, the Jackrabbits had a great chance on goal as Daylen Ray hit the underside of the crossbar from about 5 yards away. Just about 10 minutes later, Mesa struck first. David Garcia sent a ball to Theo Kwi who outraced the defender turned and fired a shot far right side of the net to put them on top 1-0. But not more than a minute later, Skyline answered as a Coyote midfielder looked to be crossing a ball, but the shot had the wind get a hold of it and floated over goalie Dustin Clarke's head into the net, tying the score at 1-1. Clarke would not be beaten again. The second half had both teams going back and forth with chances on both ends, but the defenses and keepers came up big. It wasn't until the 75th minute that the game would turn. With Mesa having a throw-in deep in Skyline territory, Ricky Lutz launched a throw into the box that the Skyline keeper could only deflect. Midfielder Adrian Rivera gathered the loose ball and chipped it back toward the penalty mark. That was where Edy Farfan sat waiting - like a moment out of a movie - to bicycle volley kick the ball into the upper left corner of the net for the game-winning goal. The team all ran over jumping on Coach Hagen and each other, celebrating the lead with just over 5 minutes remaining. Skyline pushed to even the score, but Mesa's defense held strong and when the final whistle blew, the boys all piled up at the center of the field. After handshakes, Mesa was awarded individual medals and declared Region Tournament champs. It was coach T.J. Hagen's 100th victory as a head coach at Mesa and in his career. Congratulations to the Skyline Coyotes on their great season and being Region champs, and good luck in the State Tournament. And Congratulations on a great finish Jackrabbits - Region tournament Champs and a #6 seed in the state.

Long trip finishes well
January 20, 2006 - 12:00 PM --
Mesa took the long, more than 3 hour drive down to Yuma High school to take on the Criminals in their regular season finale. The look of the field was similar to that of a soccer stadium and that excited the guys. Mesa looked strong in the first half and when Edy Farfan stood over a penalty kick early on, the Jackrabbits looked poised to go on top. But the Yuma keeper guessed correctly and saved the kick to keep the score at 0-0. But later in the half, Mesa got a corner kick that deflected off of a Yuma defender to forward Daylen Ray who buried the shot in the back corner of the net for the 1-0 lead. It was short lived as Yuma broke through an offside attempt and scored to even the game at 1-1. The second half proved tough as the Criminals were able to keep the 'Rabbits out of the net until substitute midfielder Adrian Rivera found the back of the goal to put Mesa ahead to stay. With under 15 seconds left, Mesa recieved a penalty kick again, where senior Chad Flake stepped up to try to score his first goal. His shot hit the crossbar and on the ensuing scramble a Criminal defender shoved another Mesa player and Mesa was again awarded a penalty kick with 7 seconds left. Senior Ramon Galaviz went to try to score his first goal as well but put his shot over the goal. But the game was in hand, and Mesa went home happy, having the best record ever at 19-2.

End of Region
January 19, 2006 - 11:00 AM --
The end of region play has finally come, and the Jackrabbits find themselves tied for the best record in school history and only hope to make it better. Mesa finished out region play by besting Westwood 4-0. Scoring goals in the first half were David Garcia, Gustavo Munoz, Theo Kwi and Edy Farfan, who recorded his school record 19th goal. The Jackrabbits dominated the play and in the second half used all of its reserves in an opportunity to get everyone some game time before the playoffs. Even Farfan went into goal while goalie Dustin Clarke came out to play the field. Westwood was awarded a penalty kick, but the shot went well wide of the goal and the shutout was intact. Freshman Robert Solomonson, and seniors Chad Flake and Ramon Galaviz were given quality time on the offensive end in an effort to get them that elusive first goal on Varsity. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be, and the game ended without any goals in the second half. Mesa ends up play in the region with a record of 4-1, and will be the second seeded team in the region playoffs. Only an unfortunate loss to Skyline kept Mesa from winning their first Region title.

New streak against the Mustangs
January 14, 2006 - 12:00 PM --
For the longest time, Mesa High soccer had taken a back seat to the powerful Mustangs, but no more. For the second year in a row, and 3rd consecutive time, the boys soccer team defeated Dobson 3-0 on a very inspiring senior night. And it was the senior's night. Seniors Adrian Rivera and Kyle Jones scored first half goals in getting Mesa a 2-0 lead at halftime. And Rivera wasn't done. Starting at midfield for the first time all year, he made good on his opportunity by netting a second goal and finishing out the scoring to make the final 3-0. Dustin Clarke finished with 11 saves and had his 7th shutout of the season.

Mesa politely and considerately rescheduled this game in order to help out the Dobson coach who will be attending a National Coaching Conference.

Payback!
January 13, 2006 - 10:45 AM --
Getting back to what really matters - the Mesa High Soccer program - the boys showed great resolve in Thursday night's 3-2 win over Red Mtn. With 4 starters back in the lineup, the squad put together a fine second half to come from behind and earn another region win. It was also a bit of payback as last years squad lost 3 games all year - and 2 of them were to Red Mtn., so this year's team wanted to get back some respect from the Mt. Lions.
It was Red Mtn. on the board first as the Mesa defense was caught looking for the trap and a Mt. Lion forward slipped past onside and buried a ball past goalie Dustin Clarke. But Mesa quickly countered several minutes later, as Theo Kwi came off the bench to confuse the Red Mtn. defense with his speed and his creativity to put one by the Mt. Lion goalie. The teams headed to halftime tied 1-1. Coach Hagen shored up the defensive alignment and had the midfielders pick it up a little more, and Mesa took the lead for good midway thru the second half. Theo Kwi's creativity once again was confusing to Red Mtn. and when he chipped the ball from the top left side of the penalty box Edy Farfan scored one of the more beautiful goals of the season. Farfan's 17th goal of the season set a new Mesa High record for goals in a season. But he wasn't done yet. Just minutes later Devan Robinson played a perfect ball to the middle of the box where it found Farfan's head and then the back of the net for the 3-1 lead. Substitutes started pouring onto the field for the Jackrabbits until the Mtn. Lions once again found the net to make it a 3-2 game. But the Defense stood strong and finished out the game to earn the victory.
For a change there were 3 officials on the field officiating. The center referee was able to keep up with the pace of play, and the sideline officials were up and down the field making the correct calls - FOR OR AGAINST Mesa. That's all we can ask for - a competent refereeing crew.

Mesa tops Mt. View in PK's
January 9, 2006 - 01:30 PM --
It was a night to be remembered in the annals of Mesa High Soccer history. Playing without the help of several starters, the Jackrabbits put together one of their gutsiest performances to date to earn a 1-0 victory over arch-rival Mt. View in Overtime Penalty Kicks. Switching the line-up around due to the absence of those starters, the boys played inspired soccer against an old nemesis. With both squads having chances either saved from close range or shots missing just wide of the mark, regulation ended in a 0-0 tie. Overtime started and several on-field players were experiencing cramping and fatigue. But they pulled it together to hold off the Toros and go to overtime, where coach T.J. Hagen felt he had a great chance with his experienced Goalkeeper Dustin Clarke. It would turn out to be the difference. With both teams' first shooters (for Mesa it was Dustin Clarke) scoring their opening kicks it was 1-1, and when Clarke saved the 2nd shooter from Mt. View and Daylen Ray scored his, Mesa held the early PK lead. But Mt. View's 3rd shooter scored and Devan Robinson hit his over the crossbar and it was back to even 2-2. But Clarke came up big with a save on the 4th shooter and Ricky Lutz nailed his kick to take the 3-2 lead. As the 5th and final Toro shooter hit the crossbar, the euphoric Jackrabbits ran onto the field to mob the Goaltender Clarke and celebrate a hard fought 1-0 victory and begin league play tied at the top of the standings. Region play continues with Skyline away Tuesday night. The boys are now 15-1 and ranked 5th in the state, and 6th in power points.

De ja vu all over again!
January 6, 2006 - 10:30 AM --
It was just like old times. In last years state playoffs, the Jackrabbits and Tigers faced off, and Gilbert came out on top. This year, in a game similar to last year's, once again the Tigers came out on top and in the process stopped Mesa's record 14 game win streak. In an eerily similar fashion to last year's contest, the Jackrabbits got up 1-0 midway thru the first half on Edy Farfan's school record tying 16th goal of the season. But as in last years contest, the officiating took control. Ricky Lutz was aggressively clearing a ball at the top of the Mesa box, when he was whistled for a PK. Gilbert converted and the score was tied going into halftime. Both teams came out fired up for the second half, and when a Gilbert player was given a red card, Mesa seemed to have the upper hand. But with under 10 minutes remaining, a Tiger forward took a dive in the box, to which the center official gave ANOTHER penalty kick. Gilbert once again converted and the wind was taken out of Mesa's sails. Gilbert would tally several minutes later and on the Mesa end, several players were taken down either in or at the top of the box, to which the referee let those fouls go uncalled. The game ended with a 3-1 victory for the Tigers. The loss may be a good thing for the Rabbits as they head into region play with the burden of carrying an undefeated season off their shoulders.

Mesa stays unbeaten, faces toughest test yet
January 5, 2006 - 09:15 AM --
The Mesa Boys remained unbeaten with a 4-0 win over Tucson Flowing Wells. Scoring goals for Mesa were Edy Farfan, David Garcia, Gustavo Munoz and Edwin Tobar. Dustin Clarke got his 6th shutout of the year. The Jackrabbits will take on a tough Gilbert squad in a rematch of last year's second round State Tournament game. Mesa was up 2-0 but watched as Gilbert snatched a 3-2 victory and knocked the Jackrabbits out of the state playoffs last year. So get ready for some payback!

3 PEAT!
December 23, 2005 - 06:00 PM --
For the 3rd straight year, the Jackrabbit soccer team has won their own tournament title. Playing in the title game against Agua Fria, the game turned out to be just as interesting as the matchup predicted. The 2 teams met up during last year's tournament in pool play and ended in a 1-1 tie, so one team was assured to get the best of the other on this night. The game was tightly contested early on in the first half as both teams had chances but neither could find the net. A corner kick with under 10 minutes to go in the half was the difference in the game. The ball was knocked around until it found Daylen Ray's foot, who deflected the ball to defender Kyle Jones on the left side of the net, who then blasted it past the Agua Fria keeper to give the Jackrabbits the only lead they would need. Going in 1-0 at halftime, the team was pumped to be on top. Agua Fria stepped up the pressure in the second half and, midway through the period, had a breakaway stopped by Goalie Dustin Clarke. However, Clarke was whistled for a tripping foul, even though he appeared to have gotten all ball. On the ensuing Penalty kick, Agua Fria's player hit the crossbar with his shot, and the Mesa defense held strong. Both teams traded chances throughout the rest of the game, and with one last chance with under a mintue to play, Agua Fria's "Flip" throw-in specialist didn't get the ball close enough to be a danger to the Jackrabbits and the game ended. Mesa has won 5 straight tournament titles and is now 13-0 on the season. The Jackrabbits are off for the Holiday break, and resume play January 4th against Flowing Wells.

Jackrabbits in Title game........Again!
December 22, 2005 - 12:30 PM --
The Jackrabbits are at it again. Hosting their seventh annual Jackrabbit Invitational Tournament, the boys are once again in the Title game. Every year, Mesa has been in the Title game, winning 4 championships and finishing runner-up twice. They will be going for their 3rd straight Title against Agua Fria after a 3-2 come from behind victory over a tough Scottsdale Saguaro team. After a Sabercat free kick from about 25 yards out found the net halfway thru the first half, the Jackrabbits found themselves down 1-0 at halftime. But the team had been playing well, and just needed that breakthrough goal to get them going. Theo Kwi found the net just mintues into the second half to knot the score at 1 all. Then several minutes later Edy Farfan scored from close in to make the score 2-1. But saguaro wouldn't quit and came right back with their own goal off a corner kick to tie the score at 2-2. But Edy Farfan scored again to put Mesa ahead for good. Agua Fria was a winner over Pinnacle, and the Owls will meet the Jackrabbits Thursday at 6:00 for the Championship title. Saguaro will meet the Pioneers at 4:00 for 3rd place.

Jackrabbits unscathed thru pool play
December 21, 2005 - 03:00 PM --
The Jackrabbits rolled thru pool play unbeaten to advance to the Semi-Finals of the Jackrabbit Invitational Tournament. But it wasn't without it's trials. Mesa faced a tough challenge in the first game against Yuma Kofa. Kofa controlled the first half of the game with their dribbling and Mesa went in at halftime 0-0. In the second half, the Jackrabbits got fired up and when Juan Cruz chipped the ball over the Kofa keeper halfway thru the period, Mesa got the only lead it needed. In the second game, the Jackrabbits faced a tough and highly ranked Coronado squad. With the knowledge of the Dons success, Mesa stepped up the intensity and Edy Farfan scored early in the contest to put the team at ease. Only minutes later, Daylen Ray scored to make it 2-0 and Marco Escarcega scored near the end of the half to make it 3-0. With Mesa getting it's maximum goals for points, the Jackrabbit bench came on the help finishout the game. But the Coronado forwards were very skilled and scored twice to cut the lead to one. Mesa's defense held them off and was in control of the pool. On Wednesday, the Jackrabbits finished out pool play against Tucson Sunnyside. The Jackrabbits went in at halftime 4-0 on goals from Edy Farfan, Marco Escarcega, Theo Kwi and Devan Robinson. The Mesa bench all got into the game and continued the scoring. Cole Vickery, David Garcia, Adrian Rivera, Gustavo Munoz, Eleazar Lozano, and Goalie Dustin Clarke, who came out of net to play the field, all scored in the second half. Mesa plays Saguaro to advance to the Championship game.

'Rabbits still unbeaten in Rout
December 18, 2005 - 03:30 PM --
Mesa traveled across the Valley Friday night to take on Sunrise Mountain. Although the Mustangs had not won a game, the Jackrabbits were not going to take the contest lightly. Mesa got up early 2-0 on goals by Edy Farfan and Theo Kwi. But a lackluster defensive effort gave Sunrise Mtn a penalty kick midway through the half. The Mustang kicker missed completely and the Jackrabbits were relieved the shutout was still in tact. Mesa then got 2 more goals to finish out the half - one by David Garcia and Farfan's second of the night. Wanting to rest several starters and give quality playing minutes to the reserves, Mesa's bench played very well. Theo Kwi scored his second goal of the night, and regular defenders Kyle Jones and Ricky Lutz were given opportunities to push the ball forward and also scored goals. Devan Robinson hit a well placed free kick from about 20 yards out and Freshman Mason Crandell was in the right place at the right time to get his first varsity goal. With about 5 seconds left the Mustangs wouldn't quit as they scored the final goal on backup keeper Edwin Tobar and avoided the shutout. Final score 9-1. Mesa enters the Holiday break the only unbeaten 5A Division I squad and looking forward to defending their Jackrabbit Tournament Championship. With games against 5A foes Kofa and Tucson Sunnyside and one of 4A's top teams in Coronado, the road will not be easy as everyone wants to topple the Defending Champs.

'Rabbits continue to roll
December 16, 2005 - 01:00 PM --
The Jackrabbits continued their unbeaten streak with a 5-3 victory over the Basha Bears. After a slow start against Central, the Mesa offense wanted to come out of the gate quickly and they definitely didn't disappoint. 30 seconds into the game, David Garcia recieved a long cross from Edy Farfan and blasted a 20 yard shot, top shelf on the Basha keeper for the quick and early lead. Garcia then paid Farfan back for the assist with an assist of his own and the Jackrabbits were up 2-0 before Basha knew what hit them. Basha forward Wil Ramsey then knocked in a breakaway to cut the lead to one. But then substitute Marco Escarcega redirected the ball into the net off a Farfan shot and Mesa held the lead 3-1 going into halftime. The second half showed Basha didn't want to go quietly. After an apparent offside was not called, Basha forward Scott Grode chipped the ball over the charging goalie Dustin Clarke to close the gap again. And when Ramsey found the net again several minutes later the score was all knotted up at 3. But the Mesa offense would not let the game slip away. Farfan connected with his head on a Devan Robinson cross to take the lead back for good. And Daylen Ray sealed the win with an open net goal after Escarcega challenged the keeper outside of the box and the ball deflected to Ray for the open shot. The Jackrabbits remain the only undefeated 5A Div. I team and travel to Sunrise Mtn. to try to keep the streak alive.

Mesa starts off regular season play
December 14, 2005 - 02:00 PM --
The Jackrabbits started their regular season schedule with a 2-1 come from behind victory over a very tough and pesky Central Bobcat squad. With Defender Ricky Lutz on the bench due to a Red card in the Tournament Final, Mesa was forced to switch up their defense and play with a new formation. Several key starters were kept out of the starting lineup which also may have caused some confusion. But the squad held together and played a tough first half. With Central having the majority of chances on goal in the first half, Goalie Dustin Clarke came up with some huge saves to keep Mesa even. It wasn't until 3 minutes to go until halftime that Central was able to knock a loose ball in the box into the net that the Jackrabbits were down 1-0. After halftime, the team still looked somewhat out of sorts - possibly due to having over a week off from a game. But with just under 14 mintues to play, Edy Farfan knocked a ball into the box where David Garcia was able to put it past the Central netminder to tie the score. With Mesa feeling a momentum shift, they dominated the final 13 mintues, and were able get a goal mouth scramble in the 76th minute where once again Edy Farfan touched a ball to Juanito Cruz who was able to push it by the Central Defense for the winning goal. Tempers flared at the end of the game when some Central players took some cheap shots on the Mesa defenders, and several cards had to be issued to calm the situation. But Mesa held on and is 6-0 in their season.

Tournament Champions
December 4, 2005 - 10:00 PM --
The Mesa Boys soccer team captured the Title of the Moon Valley Invitational Saturday Dec. 3rd with a 2-1 come from behind victory over the 4A Div. II #1 ranked Cactus Shadows Falcons. To get to the title game the Rabbits had to defeat the host and 4A Div I top 10 ranked Moon Valley Rockets in the Semi-Final game Friday night, 3-1. David Garcia got Mesa on the board first in the 1st half with a blast from the left side. In the 2nd half, Daylen Ray and Cole Vickery scored to put the game away, while the Mesa Defense held off a strong Rocket charge - giving up only a late goal. In the Final, it was Cactus Shadows going on top early - the first deficit Mesa has faced this season - as Goalkeeper Dustin Clarke looked to have slipped diving for a ball that found the back corner of the net. But Clarke would make up for the mistake with some stellar saves - diving several times to deny a Falcon goal. Midway through the 2nd half, a Falcon player was whistled for a foul at midfield, and Ricky Lutz sent a long ball into the box, where Edy Farfan found it with his head and knocked it in to knot the score at 1. The teams traded chances and the refs traded cards with each team as the intensity built. With just under 6 minutes remaining, David Garcia dribbled thru 3 Falcon defenders, getting deep into the box before being taken down and Mesa was given a Penalty Kick. Edy Farfan set up over the ball and found the back of the net for his 3rd PK goal and 6th of the tournament. The Falcons bench was upset with the call, but to no avail. With time running out, tempers flared, red cards were issued, but the Mesa Defense was able to hold off Cactus Shadows and win their 4th straight tournament title dating back to 2004.

Mesa moves into Semi-Final
December 2, 2005 - 01:00 PM --
The Jackrabbits upended 5A II #5 ranked Centennial 3-1. David Garcia got Mesa on the board just 40 seconds into the game with a header on a cross from Edy Farfan. Then Farfan put Mesa up for good and into the Semifinals with a shot from close range. He finished off the scoring for Mesa with his second penalty kick in as many days. With the referees trying to keep a tight hold on the game, Coach Hagen pulled many of his starters before they could be injured or given cautions. Ricky Lutz fouled a Centennial player on the edge of the box and the Referee awarded the Coyotes a Penalty Kick. Keeper Dustin Clarke guessed correctly but the ball still found the back of the net. With the game in hand, the Jackrabbit bench played substantial minutes holding off a strong effort from Centennial. With the win Mesa plays in the Tournament semi-final against host Moon Valley at 7 PM Friday night.
