    T-shirt Sponsorships
    T-shirt sponsorship form
The above form should be printed out and used for t-shirt sponsorships. Our goal is 30 t-shirt sponsorships in addition to the sign sponsors. This will enable you, the parent, to raise the money needed to effectively operate this season.
Because this is a much cheaper option for sponsorship, each family should be able to secure one or more t-shirt sponsors. The sponsorship is $75 each and $70 of each sponsorship will go directly to your uniform/fundraising account. If each wrestler sold one sign sponsorship and one t-shirt sponsorship, their entire uniform fee would be paid!

    WRESTLING-THE TOUGHEST SPORT
December 16, 2003  --   Wrestling the ultimate tough sport

    By John Hunt Sports Editor

    Published December 21, 2002 9:58 PM EDT

This column was written on Jan. 15, 1995 about the sport of amateur wrestling. Several people had expressed an interest in re-running it. So here it is again, almost eight years later.

Those guys who refer to Arkansas-style basketball as "40 minutes of hell" apparently never stepped on the inside circle of a wrestling mat.

You have team sports and you have individual sports. Wrestling is one of those that's definitely an individual sport and at the same time, a part of the larger "team" concept.

Some sports are tougher than others. Some require physical strength and the ability to run fast. Others require the ability to jump long and high while possessing acute hand-eye coordination.

But as far as the ultimate physical, mental and emotional challenge goes, no sport on earth rivals amateur wrestling. We're not talking about what you see on television with Hulk Hogan and those guys.

Wrestling is one sport where boys turn into young men. Wimps need not apply. When the going gets tough, wrestlers come to life.

And when it comes to "fighting for your life," wrestling is one activity that comes to mind.

I was never tall enough to play basketball and certainly not big enough to join the football team. Wrestling just seemed like my kind of sport where it didn't matter if you weighed 75 pounds or 275.

Why do young men accept such a challenging scenario in which you have an opponent on the other side of the mat who wants to make mincemeat out of your body?

What is the attraction when there's not much glory and certainly not much chance of gaining a college education with a wrestling scholarship?

Wrestling provides that opportunity where you can challenge yourself to be the best you can be. When that six-minute match has ended, you are the one who's accountable for what happened.

As so many wrestling T-shirts proclaim, there are no timeouts, no substitutions, no place to hide and no way to escape. Just WRESTLE.

Talking about putting every ounce of energy into a sport. If you do, have have a better than average chance of succeeding. If you don't, you will get pinned in a hurry and you will be humiliated in front of God and everybody else.

Blood, sweat and tears are commonplace around wrestling mats. A hard crossface across the nose will get your attention and a tight half-nelson that blocks your airways will give you a chance to value life from another perspective.

Wrestlers are among the most self-disciplined athletes you'll find. In many cases, weight loss plays a role and wrestlers must continually keep their eyes on the scales. Sitting down at the dinner table and eating an uncontrolled amount is out of the question.

More often than not, the diet of a wrestler whose weight is a problem includes lots of salad and plenty of fruit. Forget the dressing on the salad. And don't forget about those baked potatoes, full of carbohydrates and starch. Just don't think about butter or sour cream on that spud.

When was the last time you did anything as hard as you could for two minutes? Take off and run down the street as fast as you can for 120 seconds. Swim as many laps in the pool in the same amount of time. Pump the pedals on that bicycle. Sound tough?

That's just the start of what wrestlers must endure during a match. And rthey must endure three of these grueling two-minute drills.

When the whistle blows, it's just you and your opponent.

It's pressure, pressure and more pressure. Pure brute strength matched against someone your size with near-identical physical ability.

There's no chance to set your own pace. Unlike other sports where you can coast if you want, wrestling doesn't allow it. To let up is grounds for a quick pin and the humiliation among friends we mentioned earlier.

    As another T-shirt so adequately describes, "It's not a battle...it's a war."

Wrestling teaches more than slick moves on a mat. It exposes a young man to adverse conditions where he must rely on pure guts and determination to survive.

It teaches about caring for your teammates and sacrificing yourself for their benefit. It teaches you how to be mean as a snake one minute and gentle as a lamb the next.

You battle your opponent tooth and nail for all you're worth, but you shake hands and even embrace afterward. congratulating each other for the courage to enter the fray.

It provides a model for respect and admiration of other people. It forces a young man to make the most out of any situation and it teaches self-confidence along with self-esteem.

There are plenty of outstandinging wrestling teams in this city. Literally thousands of hours are spent in the practice rooms, working to perfect certain moves.

All are winners. Even those who get pinned in the quickest times are winners. As the old saying goes, "It's better to have entered the fight and lost than not to have entered at all."

So you want to try your hand at wrestling? Better yet, before the years on your body catch up with the silliness of your brain, get a grip. You still want to walk and talk, don't you?

Instead, go out for a long run. After a long, hot shower, treat yourself to a hearty meal. Then go see the wrestling team of your choice.

Then maybe you'll know more of what I'm talking about.

    TERRIFIC ARTICLE ON WRESTLING!!
January 9, 2004  --   THIS WAS PULLED FROM THE GAVSV.COM SITE. IT WAS EDITED AND POSTED BY "MCINDIAN" A FREQUENT WRITER WHO KEEPS UP WITH MCEACHERN IN PARTICULAR AND HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS GENERALLY. HIS POSTS ARE ALWAYS WELL THOUGHT OUT AND LOOK FOR THE POSITIVE IN ATHLETICS. THANKS!!

This one from the Albany Herald. I'll just cut and paste to save the search.

    Pride, tears on the mat

    SCOTT CHANCEY

You know, it's sad that high school wrestlers sometimes don't get the respect and admiration they deserve. A few people even make fun of the sport.

Then again, it's human nature to ridicule what you don't understand. Once you understand all that goes into being a high school wrestler, ridiculing them would be the last thing on your mind.

All you have to do is watch a high school wrestling match to realize the blood, sweat and tears that are poured into the preparations. I was reminded of that earlier in the week. For the first time in quite a while, I covered high school wrestling during Tuesday's Albany city championship at Westover.

There are the cries of anguish when a player is caught up in a hold. There is the resounding thump of the official's hand as it slams to the mat signifying a pin. And there is the joyous shout of a wrestler as he rises up from a quick pin or dramatic overtime victory.

There are no shoulder pads in wrestling. There are no helmets. And hey, even though you're wrestling on a pad, it still hurts when your opponent slams you to the mat.

In many ways, wrestling is the perfect sport. The perfection is in the parity.

You see, the difference between wrestlers who go against each other is skill and desire. In all other aspects of the match, they're even.

You can't say you lost because your opponent was bigger. Size is such a big factor in football. Size is such a big factor in basketball. But in wrestling, having 14 separate weight classes takes care of that.

If you lost, you lost. No excuses. You either didn't have enough desire to win, or you didn't have enough discipline in practice.

    The discipline. It's so important.

There's hardly a sport that requires the discipline that wrestling does. You have to do this, you have to do that. From jumping rope to running laps to lifting weights and doing sit-ups, you have to do it all. Knowing a scale is waiting for you on the morning of each tournament to see if you can compete in your weight class for the day, the discipline extends to the food table.

If a teenager can adhere to this, class work is hardly a challenge. Most wrestlers I've interviewed have at least a 3.0 GPA.

And the wrestlers know there's a difference between doing it and overdoing it while training. It's all about sensibly doing what needs to be done to stay within your weight class and stay on top of your performance. The Georgia High School Association team dual state championships are Feb. 6-7, the traditional area tournaments are Feb. 13-14, and the state meets in that category are Feb. 20-21.

I promise you, for those who don't think high school wrestling is a real sport, just watch how these athletes train and watch them compete. If you do, you will take on a greater appreciation for the challenges and successes of these athletes.

If only some of the other sports writes could be as balanced as this one.

Cost of Operation - Uniform Fees
September 22, 2007  --   If you are wondering where this uniform fee and all this fundraising money goes; hopefully this will answer some of your questions.

    To outfit the team:
Singlets - $2480 - at least one set must be bought each season. Last year, we did not inherit a full set and had to start from scratch. Therefore, we purchased one set for the varsity and made do with what was left for JV. We have ordered new singlets this year and hope to pass down last years or share singlets with JV.

Warm-ups - $1850 - We will again make sure that our team looks like a team. Matching warm ups help our guys look good and know that they are a part of the team. All wrestlers receive the same warm up, varsity and JV.

T-shirts - $450 - Part of the uniform and essential for team appearance during warm up at tournaments and duals.

Shorts - $850 - Again, part of the uniform and essential for team appearance during warm up at tournaments and duals.

Hooded Sweatshirts - $825 - Helps to keep the wrestlers warm in the large gyms and keeps them in uniform between matches. Although not part of the regular uniform package. These will be available to all wrestlers.

Gear Bags - $300 - We want to make sure all wrestlers have a mesh bag to store their gear and allows the clothing, shoes and headgear to dry.

Practice T-shirts - $280 - these will be the sponsor shirts and will also be used during 2 day tournaments or on weeks when multiple events take place.

Coaches Apparel - $860 - We have to take account of our coaches who have 3 events in a normal week and make sure we are looking uniform for our wrestlers. This way they can always pick us out at tournaments and events. I also like to make sure we present a professional image at all events.

Additional items - $1225 - This could include a set of practice shorts, compression shorts to wear underneath singlets, or special items for region or state.

    Competition Costs:
Tournaments Fees - $2575 - The average varsity tournament cost $175 to $200 just to compete. The average JV tournament is $150 each.

Officials - $3600 - $4200 - This is our major expenditure for the season. We will host 3 tournaments this year that incur major cost in official fees. We plan tournament fees to pay for these cost.

Hotels - $2300 - We plan one out-of-state tournament (Birmingham, AL) where we must stay overnight. This is a great experience for the varsity team and allows them to see competition they would not see otherwise. In addition, we must plan on spending 3 nights at the state tournament.

Misc. cost - $1000 - This will help pay for cost not anticipated while at competitions, out of state or at the state tournament. (food, fuel, medical supplies, additional rooms, etc.)

    General Operational cost:
Wrestling Mat - $2000 - The school purchased our program a mat last year, and we must pay back a portion this year. The school has paid $6800 for the mat and only asked that we pay this amount.

    Mat Tape - $198

    Mat Cleaner - $100

    Mops - $100

    Scorebooks - $58

Coaching Supplements - $1500 - We have hired an additional coach to help us improve our team this year. This coach is not paid a supplement from the county.

    Weight Room Fee - $500

    Medical/Athletic Trainer Fees - $500

Facility Improvements - $??? - This will be determined as we progress toward and through the season.

Of course this list of costs does not include tournament medals, individual awards, banquet cost, youth program development and fees, pre-match meals (when applicable) and many other small expenditures. I wanted to just give you a taste of what is involved in planning for a season. We must raise all of this money as a booster club in advance of the actual cost. Therefore, please consider making your contribution as soon as possible and any extra is greatly appreciated by the entire program. Without some parents going above and beyond what is asked, we would not be able to enjoy the seeing a team that is always ready, uniform and proud to be a Warrior Wrestler.

If you have any questions regarding this list, please feel free to ask. I should be able to explain or clarify.

    Coach Lanier

Community Service Day at Acworth Elementary
October 29, 2007  --   We are proud to have had about 20 wrestlers give up their Saturday morning to help Acworth Elementary. Our wrestlers helped spread mulch and improve the overall appearance of the school. This was the first time we as a team participated in a community service event. It was an overwhelming success and I am proud of our athletes for participating. We definitely had the most participants of any North Cobb HS group. Thanks to Coach Prince for coordinating the event and working with our athletes on the project.
