    Winter Leagues 2009-2010
November 23, 2009  --   For both Winter Dek and Roller, the full Winter schedules are available online. Because Roller is a draft league, all rosters for all five teams (a fifth team was added after enough extra players joined the league) are also online. Please be sure to know what team you're on (if you're in roller) and know when your team plays!

Also, as a reminder, because the winter roller league was a draft-based league:

-Trades are allowed. Both captains must give explicit consent to either Matt or Jason, and Matt or Jason must also approve the trade before it goes through.
-All new players must contact either Matt or Jason in order to join a team. Any requests to add players through any other means will be denied outright.
-All new players must also join on or before December 9. After December 9, all rosters are finalized and no trades will then be permitted, either.

    Winter Roller 09-10 Transactions
November 23, 2009 - 11:50 AM --   This is the official league list of transactions as they are approved through the league. The timestamp above is the last time this list was updated.

    Waivers:
All new players are placed on waivers. Captains are given a chance to pickup the player in the order they are on the waiver list. Once a captain picks up a player, that captain is moved to the bottom of the list. If a player is not chosen through the waiver process, the team with the least amount of players will be given that player.

    WINTER ROLLER DRAFT LEAGUE
Also, this Winter we plan on holding another draft-based league for all interested. We will hold a closed-door draft among the pre-selected roller captains who will individually select players in a fantasy snake draft style. The number of teams, and scheduling will all depend on the amount of players interested in playing. In order to sign up for this league, we will need players to submit their name and phone number to be put on the list. Once you are drafted, you will be informed by your new captain over the phone.

    Game Days: Tuesday-Thursday
Game Times: TBA, but no earlier than 6PM and no later than 10PM
Number of Teams: TBA, dependent on number of players
Cost: $30 per player early-bird ($35 late) ($5 off Fall Session fees)
Games: At least 8 regular season + playoffs (if eligible)

For more details or to put your name on the list, send an email to webmaster@ncymca.org.

Congratulations to Skillz for winning the Fall Russell Cup, and for Car Ramrod for winning the Fall Lee Myers Memorial Cup!

    Referee Certification Class

Those of you that have certified before and wish to continue to officiate must be re-certified in order to continue to officiate. The cost is $30 per person, but games can be given to interested individuals to officiate if they are interested in taking the class.

The class will be MOVED TO Wednesday, May 20th on account of the PENS game 7 the class will start at 6:00PM at the YMCA. Call Jason Kmick at 724-658-4766 if you're interested in being certified or re-certified.

    Stats Updated, Playoffs (almost) Set
June 15, 2009 - 10:30 AM --   Except for one final game to be played tonight at 9PM (NHL), the playoffs of all three leagues (Dek, AHL, NHL) are set and ready to go.

A few reminders for teams as we begin the playoffs for the spring sessions:

    1. Any player not having paid the $35 league fee by the start of their game is ineligible for the playoffs, regardless of games played.

    2. Any player not having played in the minimum of 4 regular season games with their team (as per the rules, see "League Rules" link to the left) is ineligible for the playoffs, regardless of receipt of payment or not.

    3. Each round of the playoffs will be configured as follows: Lowest-seeded team (i.e. 4th place out of four teams) will play as visitor against the highest seeded team (i.e. 1st place out of four teams), second-lowest seeded team (i.e. 3rd place) will play visitor against the second-highest-seeded team (i.e. second place), so on and so forth. Teams will be re-aligned each round according. Dek has four teams, while both NHL and AHL have six. Accordingly, the NHL and AHL will have #1 and #2 teams have a "bye" as teams #3-#6 play one another to determine their next opponents.

    4. Entire AHL and NHL playoffs are single-elimination. Dek playoffs round 1 is single-elimination, Championship is Best-of-3.

Any questions regarding the playoffs can be sent to the email link to the left (webmaster [at] ncymca [dot] org)

Roller, Foot, and Referee Meetings for Spring 2009
March 30, 2009 - 03:40 PM --   We are two weeks away from starting our Spring Adult sessions (Monday, April 13 for Foot Hockey and Tuesday, April 14 for Roller Hockey). 8:00PM - Spring 2009 Referee Captains Meeting (both leagues)

As always, this is mandatory that at LEAST one person from each team come to the appropriate meeting so that we can make sure everyone is aware of how the league will be run, the rules that will be adhered to, scheduling, etcetera.

We (the YMCA) are aware that there are some that would like to see changes be made to the way the leagues are run (as there always is). THESE meetings are your primary chance at voicing your opinions so as to better the league, please make use of this opportunity!

3v3 Champs, Rink Torn Down to Make Way for New Rink in '08
    November 5, 2007 - 08:00 PM --
The 3v3 Tournament has been completed, and congratulations to Tony Pica, Dave Huddy and Mark Stoner as they defeated the Senators to remain unbeaten and capture the Tournament Championship. All three of them will receive tournament T-shirts.

On Saturday, November 3 2007 the rink's stands, walls and benches were all torn down to make way for the groundbreaking of the brand-new community-funded rink in early Spring 2008. Photos were taken by a variety of sources, including Dan Irwin of the New Castle News (Click Here for Dan's photo collection and story from the New Castle News' November 5th print). We also have some photos on this site. Click on "Photo Albums" to the left to view a few shots of the action on Saturday to see just what went down and how the rink looks now.

As for YMCA Hockey, the program officially begins dormancy until the Spring. If you will be interested in playing in the spring, be sure to check back here or call the YMCA for more information. Calls will be made to former captains, but we need your help as well. When the time comes, spread the word to all who care. We will be vastly improving the programs we offer (especially for youth hockey), and we will try to keep the new rink open as much as possible.

Personally, I'd like to thank everyone who has participated this past year, and I look forward to working with all of you next year as well. It's been a LOT of fun and I can't wait for our new rink thanks to the amazing community-based effort to fund and build it.

See you next year... and Go Pens!

    -Matt

    Farewell 3v3 Tournament Information
    October 8, 2007 - 01:15 PM --
Due to the scheduled tear-down of the rink (to make way for the construction of a brand-new rink this coming spring) during the first weekend of November 2007, we are planning to hold a farewell tournament to commemorate the 12 years that we have all spent at the rink. Because much of the details of the tournament depend on how many people are attending and everyone's general preferences as to which times work best, many of these details are still up in the air. Please let Matt know when you're RSVP'ing what times work best for you (days of the week, times during those days) and we will try our best to schedule this tourney to make it most convenient. Here are the details we have now:

When: The week of Monday Oct. 22 - Saturday Oct. 27 2007
Where: New Castle YMCA Dek Hockey Rink (Phelps Way, New Castle)
What: A 3-on-3 pickup roller hockey tournament. Teams of five skaters and a goalie will be chosen at random (out of a hat).
How: Shortened 10-minute periods with minimal break time in between periods and games. Each team will be given a minimum of three games.
Depending on the number of goalies, we will most likely attempt to share goaltenders between teams. To make it more competitive, we will have a separate goalie competition between goaltenders to see which goaltender can have the lowest goals against number.
Cost: $5 per skater, full-time goalies are not charged a fee.
RSVP: All those interested in playing MUST RSVP by no later than Saturday, October 20th 2007 at 11:59PM EST by contacting Matt. Fees will not be due until the day of the tournament, but all players must RSVP by the 20th.

I also ask a favor of all captains from both past and present sessions - please spread the word to all of your players and let them know. If possible it would be helpful if we could use all captains as a funnel of information to see what types of setups would work best for all. As stated above, we will try our best to make this tournament as accommodating as possible, but we will need your input.

Final Standings and Playoff Brackets: Fall 2007 Session
    October 5, 2007 - 12:55 AM --
All games for the 2007 Fall Session have been played, recorded and updated on the site, and except for one day's postponements due to rain, were completed on time. Below is the final standings based on these superlatives (carried over from the spring and summer sessions):

    1. Points - 2 for wins, 1 for overtime losses
    2. Goals For-Goals Against Difference

Though we could have used the series record between two teams this session as a determiner, it was decided that the GF-GA statistic was more representative of the entire season rather than a quarter of it. Here is the overall standings according to the above superlatives:

    No. | Name | Pts | GF | GA | DIFF |
    1. | Wildebeests | 20 | 113 | 53 | +60 |
    2. | Skillz | 18 | 109 | 85 | +24 |
    3. | Crackers | 8 | 63 | 85 | -22 |
    4. | McDowells | 8 | 81 | 105 | -24 |
    5. | Marauders | 6 | 75 | 113 | -38 |

With that, here is the official Russell Cup Playoff Brackets: Fall 2007 Playoff Brackets (PDF). Here are the times listed in that file:

    Game A - Tuesday, October 9, 2007 @ 7:00 - McDowells @ Wildebeests
    Game B - Tuesday, October 9, 2007 @ 8:00 - Crackers @ Skillz
    Game C - Tuesday, October 9, 2007 @ 9:00 - Loser A vs. Loser B

    Game D - Thursday, October 11, 2007 @ 7:00 - Winner A vs. Winner B
    Game E - Thursday, October 11, 2007 @ 8:15 - Winner A vs. Winner B
    Game F - Thursday, October 11, 2007 @ 9:30 - Winner A vs. Winner B (if needed)

I know I told a few of you the incorrect times, and I apologize. At the time I did not realize that the Crackers and McDowells had the same record. Please let me know if you need a schedule change at least 24 hours in advance. Thanks, and good luck to all in the playoffs!

Note: Check back here often, and check the date of this message to see when it was last updated - this will be updated as soon as we hear back from teams that need schedule changes!

Changes will be marked with italicized red text!
    Monday, October 1st, 2007
    7:00 - Wildebeests @ Skillz
    8:00 - Skillz @ Marauders

    Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

The Russell Cup: The Start of a Tradition
    September 14, 2007 - 06:00 PM --
Yesterday, Thursday September 13th, the New Castle YMCA's Adult Roller Hockey started a tradition - The Russell Cup, as it is called, will be the official trophy awarded to the champions of each and every session played at the New Castle YMCA's roller hockey rink.

Following a tradition similar to that of the Stanley Cup, the Russell Cup will be awarded to the championship team, and then that team may celebrate however they wish with the Russell Cup. The team will then return the Cup to the league before another session starts.

Jason Dudash and the Cedars team will go down in history as the first team to hoist the Russell Cup above their heads, as they currently possess the Russell Cup after their summer session victory. Congratulations once again to Jason Dudash and the Cedars!

Schedule Posted, Stats Updated, All-Star Roster Released
    September 5, 2007 - 02:30 PM --
    Schedule Posted & Stats Updated
The entire schedule for the Fall '07 Session has been put on the website, and the games played on September 4th 2007 have been updated. There were a few exceptions to the updated stats, so see the "Stats Updated (9-5-07)" news story in the headlines box to the right for more details.

I'm going to try to keep posting short game summaries for each game as I post the stats this session. When you go to "Game Results" on the left-hand menu, then click the game's final score link, at the top of that page there should be a paragraph or two chronicling the game according to the stats/my eye witness. This may not last all session but let me know what you think of it.

    All-Star Roster Released
The second part of the New Castle-Oil City All-Star Game is coming up soon (game date is still TBA), and a modified roster for the All-Star team has been selected. In addition to selecting players based on their statistical performances in the Summer '07 session, an effort was made to select teammates that work well together. Here is a list of the twelve skaters, two goaltenders and three alternate skaters who have been selected (listed along with their suggested lines):

    Jason Dudash
    Tony Sig
    Tony Pica
    Aaron Lewis

    Mark Stoner
    Kevin Calvert
    Dave Huddy
    Jarad Trimble

    Joe Wilson
    Chris Callahan
    Dave Cosgrove
    Matt Orres

    Goaltenders:

    Andy Palumbo
    Steve Poulton

    Alternate Skaters:

    Brian Pruitt
    CJ Meyer
    Sean Vannoy

The date for the game is still to be announced, but we will be giving everyone a heads-up one week in advance. It was originally set for Saturday, September 8th, but we are looking to reschedule it for another Saturday in September.

We ask that all players listed (including alternates) be ready to attend the game. Please let Matt know (724-458-3217) if you are unable to attend as soon as possible! Thanks again.

First Day of Games - Fall 07 Session
    September 3, 2007 - 06:45 PM --
Here is the first day's schedule of games (Tuesday Sept. 4th):

    7:00PM - Marauders @ Skillz
    8:00PM - Wildebeests @ Crackers
    9:00PM - Mcdowell's @ Marauders

We will post the full schedule some time on Tuesday.

    Fall Session Details
    August 29, 2007 - 07:00 PM --
Last night the Fall Session Captain's Meeting was a success, as we had all but one captain show (but he gave us advance notice), and we were able to quickly discuss details regarding the upcoming fall league. Here it is as we know it (and please let me know if I left out any details):

-There are five teams for sure, possibly six (depending on how many players Skillz have):

    **McDowell's
    **Marauders
    **Wildebeests
    **Skillz (may split into two)
    **Crackers (our new team)

-Rules and procedures are virtually the same as those from the spring and summer sessions.
-EVERY player must fill out and complete a waiver and player registration form before they play their FIRST game. We will be very strict regarding this matter this session. If you have filled out one of these forms in the past, please see Matt or Mike and MAKE SURE your name gets checked off of our list.
-We will play games at 7, 8 and 9:00PM on Tuesday/Thursdays. Makeups will be on Tuesday/Thursdays only, and we will make them up at the 6:00 and 10:00PM time slots. Extra consideration will be taken to make sure that no team plays any more than two games a day.
-Due to the upcoming rink tear-down and rebuild, we will make every attempt to finish the fall league quickly, and also hold a farewell 3-on-3 pickup tournament on a late September/very early October weekend (details to come).
-Spring leagues are expected to resume at a normal time in March or April 2008 (as long as construction goes as planned).

Also, we have moved the start date back to next Tuesday, September 4 starting at 7:00PM. A schedule will be released as soon as it has been completed, so check back often.

We will be having a $1 pickup Thursday night, and fall session players will have a chance to fill out and turn in (or get checked off) for the waiver/registration forms.

    Captains Meeting and Improv Pickup
    August 27, 2007 - 09:30 PM --
Tomorrow night (Tuesday Aug. 28) at 7:00 we will be having the Adult Fall Session captain's meeting at the downtown New Castle YMCA. We will briefly cover the rules, regulations and scheduling for the upcoming session. If you are interested in putting a team in for the fall session, you MUST have a representative at this meeting or, under unanticipated circumstances, let Jason OR Matt know at least an hour in advance that you or a rep from your team can't make the meeting.

Afterwards, we'll be holding an improvised pickup session at about 7:30PM (meeting shouldn't last more than a half-hour). Please spread the word to all as this improvised pickup session is intended to help get everyone back in shape since we've had a brief hiatus since the summer session. We will be charging a $1 fee per person, which will go towards buying more hockey balls for our fall and spring sessions.

    Championship and Fall Session Information
    August 23, 2007 - 12:50 AM --
Congratulations to Jason Dudash and the Cedars team for capturing the league title by defeating the Milfhunters in two games (11-1, 11-1) on Wednesday night. Cedars will also hold the distinction of being the first team in history to hoist the soon-to-be Russell Cup, the trophy that we are in the process of obtaining. Details and photos of the trophy and it's acceptance by Jason Dudash will be posted when they are finally available.

Because the Championship was able to be played on Wednesday, we will be able to hold the Captain's Meeting for the Fall 2007 Session on Tuesday, August 28th at 7:00PM at the New Castle YMCA. We already have four confirmed teams for the fall session, and there is a distinct possibility that there will be more.

If you're interested in having a team for the fall session, please contact Jason or Matt ASAP and attend the mandatory captain's meeting.

As of right now, we are planning on starting the fall session on the following Thursday, August 30th. Times and schedules will be released ASAP.

    Semifinals Results and Championship
    August 21, 2007 - 02:10 PM --
Last Thursday the semifinals were completed. Here are the results of those games:

    7:00 - Milfhunters 11, Wildebeests 9
    8:00 - Cedars 10, Marauders 0

As a result, the championship will be a best-of-three series to be played between the Milfhunters and Cedars on the next playable day. All two or three games will be played on a single night starting at 7:00PM. Here is the list of remaining days that can be played if weather does not cooperate:

    Tuesday, August 21st at 7, 8, 9
    Wednesday, August 22nd at 7, 8, 9
    Monday, August 27th at 7, 8, 9
    Tuesday, August 28th at 7, 8, 9

If the 21st or the 28th's games are postponed, this further pushes the Fall Session's Captain's meeting and start date. However, if all four days listed above are unsuitable for playing, the very latest the Fall Session Captain's meeting will be is Thursday, August 30th at 7:00PM.

Also, this Thursday (Aug. 23rd) there will be pickup starting at 7:00PM. $2 per skater for anyone interested - check this site for any information regarding rain cancellations.

    Semi-Finals Schedule and Finals Schedule
    August 15, 2007 - 02:20 PM --
Last night all eight teams were in attendance as we finished the first round of the playoffs. Here are the results of those games:

    7:00 - Wildebeests 11, Presto Change-O 2
    8:00 - Milfhunters 11, McDowells 10
    9:00 - Cedars 10, Mr. Yuk 0
    10:00 - Puck U 4, Marauders 9

As a result, these are the games that will be played in the semifinals on Thursday:

    7:00 - #3 Wildebeests @ #2 Milfhunters
    8:00 - #5 Maraders @ #1 Cedars

The results of these games will determine who will compete for the summer league championship next Tuesday. The Championship will be a best-of-three series starting at 7:00PM and continuing at 8:00 and 9:00PM if needed. The winner of the championship will also receive t-shirts for their rostered players.

Please note that if we are forced to postpone either Thursday or Tuesday, we will simply move everything ahead of it back another day - we will only play on Tuesdays and Thursdays now. This includes the start of the fall session, which has already been pushed back once.

Good luck to all the teams involved!

    Final Standings and Playoffs Schedule
    August 9, 2007 - 12:45 AM --
All regular season games have been played, the stats are in, and we are ready to begin our playoffs!

As stated before, we will be using a normal seeding process (rather than a division-oriented process) that uses the following superlatives:

    1. Points total - 2 for a win and 1 for an overtime loss
    2. GF-GA Difference - the value received when a team's goals against are subtracted from the goals for.

With that in mind, here is this session's final standings, including stat totals:

No. Name W-L-OT (PTS) - GF - GA [DIFF]
    1. Cedars 9-1-0 (18) - 95 - 40 [+55]
    2. Milfhunters 8-2-0 (16) - 67 - 49 [+18]
    3. Wildebeests 7-3-0 (14) - 72 - 58 [+14]
    4. Puck U 5-5-1 (11) - 43 - 44 [-1]
    5. Marauders 5-5-0 (10) - 80 - 78 [+2]
    6. Presto Change-O 5-5-0 (10) - 60 - 80 [-20]
    7. McDowell's 3-7-1 (7) - 46 - 78 [-32]
    8. Mr. Yuk 3-7-0 (6) - 61 - 81 [-20]

And, here are the scheduled first round of games. Please note: The original brackets have games at 6, 7, 8, and 9. We have bumped all games up one hour. There are games at 7, 8, 9 and 10.

    Thursday, August 9th, 7:00PM #6 Presto Change-O @ #3 Wildebeests
    Thursday, August 9th, 8:00PM #7 McDowell's @ #2 Milfhunters
    Thursday, August 9th, 9:00PM #8 Mr. Yuk @ #1 Cedars
    Thursday, August 9th, 10:00PM #5 Marauders @ #4 Puck U

Also, rather than making games up on Mondays and Wednesdays as we had during the regular season, we will simply move postponed games to the next Tuesday or Thursday (so, if it rains on Thursday August 9th, we will play those games on Tuesday, August 14th. This will also push back any dates set for starting the fall session.

Last Day of Games and Playoffs

Updates: NC-OC All-Star Game, New Dek League
July 18, 2007 - 06:00 PM --   Here are a few updates concerning the New Castle-Oil City All-Star Game and a new Dek league:

    Update: NC-OC All-Star Game
We have received the jerseys for all 14 players on the All-Star team, and those jerseys can be picked up at the rink any time we're having a league night.

We have not, unfortunately, confirmed a date yet with the Oil City YMCA. We have been told that they have been busy starting their summer session, and so they've been working on getting everyone onto the same page. They did, however, let us know that a game on a Friday or Saturday evening/night may be possible.

We were given assurances that the absolute latest that a date will be decided upon will be Monday, July 23rd 2007. We will be absolutely sure to let all of you know when we finally do get a date hammered out.

Update: New Dek Hockey League Details
Amid speculation that a new dek (foot) league would be started at the New Castle Dek Hockey rink, Jason Kmick announced today that there indeed will be a new Dek Hockey league started at the Dek Rink.

Dek hockey is very similar to the brand of roller hockey played at the NCCY Rink, except players wear shoes (sneakers/court shoes) rather than inline skates.

There are already at least four teams who have shown serious interest in joining, and we are looking for more interested teams. If you are interested in getting a team together for the new foot league, then contact Jason (cell: 724-730-9910, email: jkmick@ncymca.org) immediately. Here are the details regarding the league as we know it now:

•Games for the Dek league will most likely be played Wednesday nights, possibly other nights
•Equipment required for each player is the same: helmet, gloves, shin pads and a stick
•A scrimmage between two of the confirmed teams is set to take place Wednesday, July 25th 2007 at 6:00PM
•League fees per person will most likely be around $25 per person.

If interested, be sure to contact Jason (cell: 724-730-9910, email: jkmick@ncymca.org) as soon as possible!

    Important Summer Session Information
    July 12, 2007 - 01:30 PM --
First, like last session all player fees and forms (each captain was given 8 two-sided forms, one side was registration, the other was the player waiver) are due by each team's third game ($30). Every team has played their third game, and for the most part every team has gotten their fees in.

For those of you that have not, I have spoken to you about it and I should have everyone's fees (who's going to be there tonight) by tonight.

Also, the waiver and reg. forms are required of all players, regardless of what their situation is. I had a few questions about this and wanted to clear it up - if you're paying the $30 league fee, you should be filling out and turning in these two forms (both on the same sheet of paper).

Also, I just wanted to let you know that Jason and I still haven't gotten a solid date set for the all-star game. Jason has been in contact with the Oil City YMCA and has been trying to get a date set, but they haven't been able to confirm one with Jason yet. We will be sure let you know ASAP when we get a date set, but please don't clear your schedules until you hear from us on a concrete date.

The jerseys for the 12 skaters and two goalies should be coming on Monday or sometime near then, so we'll let you know when we get them.

Inagural NC-OC All Star Game Announced
July 3, 2007 - 02:00 PM --   It has been announced that there will be an inaugural All-Star matchup between the roller hockey leagues based in New Castle and Oil City, both of which are operated and organized by their respective YMCA organizations.

A team of 12 skaters, two goaltenders and four alternate skaters has been chosen based on player performances from the Spring 2007 session. Here is the current roster:

    Skaters:
    AJ Bryant (Puck U)
    Chris Callahan (Mr. Yuk)
    Phil Colucci (Wildebeests)
    Sean Daugherty - A (Legends)
    Todd Daugherty (Legends)
    Pat Dierfield (Puck U)
    Jason Dudash (Cedars)
    Fred Faraoni - C (Cedars)
    Aaron Lewis (Cedars)
    Dave Oliastro (Legends)
    Tony Pica - A (Cedars)
    Mike Scalzo (Legends)

    Goaltenders:
    Andy Palumbo (Cedars)
    George Cann (Puck U)

    Alt. Skaters:
    Tony Sig (Cedars)
    Dave Cosgrove (Marauders)
    CJ Meyer (Skillz/Presto-Change-O)
    Matt Orres (Wildebeests)

The All-Star matchup will consist of two best-of-three series. The first session will be held in about a week (an exact date is about to be decided upon), and we are anticipating that this first three game series will occur on either Monday, July 9th, or Wednesday, July 11th, and will be played at the Oil City YMCA's dek rink (which is very similar to the New Castle rink).

The second best-of-three series will take place at the beginning of August at the New Castle YMCA's Dek Hockey Rink.

Further details regarding the All-Star Matchup will be released when they come to us. If you are on the roster above, then please contact Matt (724-651-1998, mattygabe@gmail.com) or Jason (724-730-9910, jkmick@ncymca.org) immediately if you haven't done so already.

For those of you who wish to cheer the NCYMCA's All-Stars on, make sure to contact Jason or Matt for event details. Hope to see you there!
