Badenhop Traded to Florida Marlins
Burke Badenhop who was 13-6-2.92 for Lakeland and Erie has been traded by the Detroit Tigers to the Florida Marlins.

The finishing touches are being put in place on a blockbuster deal that has the Marlins sending Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers for package of six highly-regarded players.
A source familiar with the negotiations has told MLB.com that the Tigers are parting with outfielder Cameron Maybin, lefty starter Andrew Miller and four prospects for the final two players from the Marlins' 2003 World Series championship squad.

Also heading to Florida will be catcher Mike Rabello, and pitchers Dallas Trahern, Eulogio De La Cruz and Burke Badenhop.

For Florida, this deal addresses several areas of need. The Marlins headed to the Meetings hopeful of acquiring a starting pitcher, a catcher and a center fielder.

Maybin and Miller were both first-round Draft picks of the Tigers, Maybin in 2005 and Miller in 2006. Both have tasted the Major Leagues.

Maybin and Miller clearly are the centerpieces, with both expected to make the 2008 roster.

Maybin, 20, made his debut in August and appeared in 24 games, hitting .143 with one home run in 49 at-bats. However, he made a rapid rise through the Tigers system, batting .304 with 10 homers in 83 games for Class A Lakeland before making a brief stop at Double-A Erie.

Miller, 22, made 13 starts for Detroit last season, going 5-6 with a 5.69 ERA. In 78 Minor League innings in 2007, he allowed 71 hits and struck out 61 batters. He was drafted out of the University of North Carolina.

Trahern, a right-handed starter, pitched for Team USA this fall. De La Cruz, who possesses a 100-mph fastball, is considered a candidate to either start or relieve.

"I'm pretty excited," Trahern said. "I love the Tigers organization, but this a new door opening for me. But I haven't heard anything yet. I'm a little surprised by this. I wasn't aware of this. I wasn't aware that we were in the Cabrera/Willis talks."

Rabello has a chance to be Florida's Opening Day starting catcher. Badenhop, another right-handed starter, was selected as the Tigers' Organizational Pitcher of the Year by MILB.com.

Badenhop Gets Career Victory # 1
April 1, 2008  --   MIAMI -- It was a bittersweet night for the Marlins.
After going winless in his first four career starts, Burke Badenhop retired his first 11 hitters in order and the Marlins improved to 4-1 against the Brewers with a 6-2 win Wednesday night at Dolphin Stadium.

But first baseman Mike Jacobs suffered a tight left quad in the third after hitting a two-run double off the top of the wall in right-center and pulled up lame -- prompting Wes Helms to come in as a pinch-runner.

The Marlins picked up three that inning after an RBI single by Jeremy Hermida, followed by Jacobs' double, which came close to his second home run in as many days. After Badenhop gave up two runs in a 24-pitch sixth inning, Florida got some much-needed insurance in the bottom half when Jorge Cantu and Dan Uggla hit back-to-back homers to give the Marlins a four-run lead.

Badenhop (1-2) went 5 2/3 innings and struck out a career-high seven batters while scattering five hits. Doug Waechter and Renyel Pinto followed out of the bullpen to complete the win.

Backstop Torn Down
Backstop an Issue

P'burg backstop issue

Last Updated Tuesday, 22 April 2008
PERRYSBURG - The Perrysburg baseball program has had to deal with playing its home games directly beside
Interstate 75 for as long as head coach Dave Hall has been with the program, covering a span of more than 20 years.
To prevent foul balls from flying into the thick traffic of the freeway, a backstop was located almost directly behind the
catcher and umpire, preventing most balls from leaving the field of play on the right side of the field.
However, the backstop prevented runners from scoring on wild pitches and eliminated the chance of any popups being
caught by the catcher.
As a result, renovations were made before this season and the backstop was moved back to allow for wild pitches and
catcher popups, both important aspects of the game of baseball.
But after an April 14 game against Southview that saw over two dozen foul balls hit onto or around I-75, a four-lane
highway that sends traffic constantly zooming by the first baseline of the field, something needed to be done, according
to Hall and Perrysburg athletics director Ray Pohlman.
"Tuesday, there were enough complaints and I knew something had to be done," Hall said.
Before the renovations, maybe 4-5 balls would go onto the highway during a varsity game, according to Hall.
No official police reports were filed with the Perrysburg Police Department, which has jurisdiction of the location, but
there was enough concern to add eight extra feet of fencing directly behind home plate and down part of the first-base
side of the field on top of what was the new backstop.
Pohlman said he talked with Perrysburg Chief of Police Rick Gilts soon after the April 14 situation to address the situation.
"We talked. He (Gilts) did get some vibes, but no report, call-the-cops type of thing," Pohlman said.
"We had no calls for service for baseballs in the roadway or anything like that," said Sgt. Jack Otte of the Perrysburg
Police Department. "In over 20 years, I can't recall a complaint for baseballs. Unfortunately, we probably aren't going to
get called until it hits a car."
According to Hall, they were lucky all of the balls hit onto the road, none directly hit any vehicles.
Games were moved from Perrysburg to alternate sites as the school addressed the situation last week.
The extra fencing cost $3,400 and was installed on Friday. If that does not fix the problem, with games scheduled to be
played at the field this week, Hall said he would add a trapezoid net on top of the extra fencing. The net could cost
around $800 according to Hall.
"Its one of those things where we have to correct and try to improve upon," Pohlman said. "We hopefully corrected it on
Friday ... I think this (extra fencing) is going to help. We've looked at the situation and so this will help rectify it."
And though Hall would like to continue to be able to play the game the way it was meant to be played, with wild pitches
and catcher popups, safety is the main concern.
"We anticipated that we were going to maybe have to do something when we did it," Hall said. "We weren't totally blindsided.
I was just shocked. I would have never guessed there'd be 24 in a game. We just want to prevent anything. If we
find out (baseballs) are going out more than they always have, we'll make adjustments. We do have a backup plan and
the backup plan will solve it."

The Backstop at Leyland Field was taken down today in one of the most anticipated days in Perrysburg Baseball History. The removal of the backstop and the installation of the new backstop will allow Perrysburg to finally play its home baseball games on a regulation field. The Jackets will now be able to score on passballs, catch popups and actually play real baseball home and away.

Perrysburg defeats Genoa at 5th Third Field
The long awaited game at 5th Third Field finally took place between Genoa and Perrysburg. The game which was twice rained out was played under sunny skies and was a very good high school baseball game. The Comets wasted no time scoring as Zack Apel led off the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Connor Wendt. The Comets struck again in the second as Justin Adkins singled, went to second on a hit batsmen and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on an rbi ground out by Zack Apel. The Jackets finally scored off Justin Adkins in the third. Blake Schmenk singled, and scored on a double by Neal Linthicum. The game remained 2-1 Genoa until the bottom of the sixth when with 2 outs the Jackets tied the score. Kevin Bosl walked and Corey Szczublewski pinch ran and stole second base. Freshmen pinch hitter Matt Slocum then stroked a single to tie the game. Both team went scoreless in the 7th with the Jackets leaving a runner on third. In the 8th inning the Comets after being held scoreless by Derrick Garcia for 5 straight innings took the lead 3-2. Troy Espinoza single, went to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Zack Apel. He scored on a sac fly by Connor Wendt. The Jackets however rallied for 2 in the botton of the 8th inning to pull out the victory. With 1 out, Rob Ostafi singled and Ryan Smith pinch ran. Corey Szczublewski beat out a drag bunt putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Matt Slocum delivered another rbi single tying the score and sending Szczublewski to third. Derrick Garcia was intentionally walked. Pinch hitter Mike Renner on the second pitch laid down a perfect suicide squeeze to win the game for the Jackets.

Both the Comets and Jackets would like to thank everyone who bought tickets to allow us to play this game game at 5th Third Field. Both teams played hard and it was a great experience for everyone.
