Nelson in State!
Jon Nelson’s quest for a state individual wrestling medal came within one match, ending in the blood round. Jon’s opening round match was against Jenison’s Jordan Alvarez ( 38-4) the region 4 runner-up and eventual 6th place medalist at 145lbs. Unfortunately, Alvarez won the tough battle by decision (8-2).
Jon’s first round consolation match was against David Yanta (30-10) of Flushing who barely lost to the eventual 8th place medalist in the first round 7-8. Jon scored several takedowns utilizing trips20and throws for a 7-4 victory and advancement into Friday’s blood round.
The winner of the blood round advances into Saturday’s medal rounds and these matches are typically some of the more hotly contested in the tournament. Jon’s draw in the medal round was a tough one, Clarkston’s Alex Popp (42-4) who was ranked 4rd in the state entering the tournament. The match was contested mostly in the neutral position as neither wrestler could hold the opponent down for very long. Popp was victorious in the battle of takedowns, winning 16-6, and eventual placement of 4th in the finals.
It was great to see lots of orange and black in the stands as Mustang fans turned out in great numbers to cheer on Jon and support Northville Wrestling!
Next year we hope to return to state with a complete stable of Mustang wrestlers competing for individual medals and all state honors.

Nelson Advances to State!
In a day filled with anticipation and emotions, Jon Nelson was the only bright spot for the Mustangs at the Woodhaven Individual Regional Finals on 2/28/09. Jon, 145 pounds, went 3-1 and captured 3rd place. He will be our sole wrestler representing Northville at the State Finals in 2 weeks! Congratulations Jon on a great day.
Unfortunately, the other six regional finalists didn't have as much fun. Matt Hagen (152) was the only other Mustang with a victory on the day. Ian Stirton (103), Greg Lorrain (119), Harry Eichholtz (140), Nick Mudar (171) and Colin Maresh (215) while fighting hard each lost their first two matches which ended their season.
Regardless of the difficult day for the Mustangs each and every one of them on Varsity and J.V. should keep their heads high for their participation in an incredible season which included a 25-5 record and a division title. Throughout the long season, the boys continued to work hard amidst many injuries and sickness.
As parents, we should be proud of the class our boys displayed in every match and pride in our school. I'm sure Northville is also recognized throughout the area as the school with the most fans and best food table! The wrestling program has come a long way in a few short years.
To all those anonymous parents out there who root for our Mustangs wrestlers, be sure to come back next year to watch an even better team with many veterans from the junior class and strong sophomore and freshman classes.
Let's also root for Jon Nelson to have a great tournament at the State Meet! Good luck Jon.
