Bombers Ink Former Baseball Pitcher Cevette
The New York Bombers have signed on Dan Cevette, a former minor league baseball pitcher to play with the team for the 2010 season.
Cevette, 26, spent 8 years in minor league baseball as a pitcher in both the Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals organization. During those 8 seasons Cevette compiled a 19-19 record with a 3.88 ERA in 110 career appearances (70 starts).
After being released last July, then deciding on retiring Cevette began playing fastpitch in the ESA League with the Hackett’s Cubs team, then appeared in the Elkland B Tournament with the Owego Warriors.
Cevette will serve primarily as an outfielder for the Bombers in 2010, and will also be learning to pitch with the help of Bomber pitchers Justin Heyman and Shawn Samson.
Cevette is currently the assistant baseball coach at Niagara University.

Bombers back in action for the Elkland "B" Weekend in PA
The Bombers are back in action after taking a few weeks off after the trip to Virginia for the NSA Worlds.
Heading to Elkland, Pa for the Elkland B weekend for a very competitive tournament that rivals the Elkland Labor Day tournament for the talent level. The Bombers will kick off the weekend play with game one at 9am on Saturday morning with Busters of Harrisburg, Pa.
Elkland B tournament has grown to becoming one of the premier Isc 2 tournaments in the country. The Snapper shootout in the first part of June rivals this tourney for over-all ISC 2 talent, but looking at the teams and list of pitchers that will compete this weekend, it will definitely be a good one and very hard for the Bombers to place in the top 3.
Billy Sherman and the Elkland Softball Association are building a great reputation of having great tournaments again, just as it was in the 70's and 80's when fastpitch softball was the only game in town. They are showing that the game is still alive and kicking, keep up the great work.

Bombers finish 2nd place in the Mickey Brennan Memorial-Lackawanna, NY Tournament !
The Bombers came back from a rough start losing the first game of the tournament and fought back to come in second place. The team finished with a 5-2 record and ended up playing 5 straight on Sunday. The Bombers showed up and started to warm-up at 830am on Sunday and never left the field till 730pm. This is a testiment to the 'love of the game' and how guys play the game for nothing more than satisfaction of just trying to win and have fun. Why do guys play this game and beat there bodies for a weekend, get up on Monday morning, go to work and try to explain to the others why they would do this? I've been asking the same question to myself for over 20 years and unless you play the game, you will never know the high you get from the thrill of competition and being a part of a team.

On the weekend.......
Pitching - oustanding performances by all the pitchers. Sampson, Heymen, and Cummings are what make the Bombers what they are. Pitching in the fastpitch game is the key and that is how teams win, the Bombers have good pitching and that is a fact. It was shown this weekend when one pitcher needed help that the others came to thier rescue and picked them up. It was great to be a part of it.
Sampson - 9 k's and gave up 13 hits
Cummings - 32 k's and gave up 5 hits
Heymen - 17 k's and gave up 10 hits
58 total strike outs and gave up 28 hits in 7 games.
Hitting - Bats came out flat in the first game of the tournament, but heated up fast. Justin Stock, again, had a super weekend and is a great lead off hitter and provided the Bombers with a spark that they really need. Bruce Hackett and Dan Edholm has oustanding weekends, along with Dry and Cevette doing a nice job at the plate. Avery, Jake Waz, and Karn provide key hits on the Sunday stretch. Edholm finally broke a much awaited home run slump and hit his first one in a few years and made it bitter sweet hitting it in his home leauge park. It will be a long time before we hear the end of this, but I guess we will have to tip our cap to the youngster. Once again a total team effort from the entire Bomber team.

Bombers finish in 2nd place in Croghan, but leave on sour note!
The Bombers finished second in the Croghan open fastpitch tournament this weekend. The team finished with a 5-1 record and didn't end up playing the championship game against Prospect, due to unforseen instances.

Bruce Hackett 2-3
Tom Avery, 1-3

Game #4 - Bombers 5, Hoyts 1

Justin Stock 2-4, 2 rbi's

Justin Stock had a triple and 2 rib's
Jeff Carr had a solo home run
Dutch Kinner had a double and 2 rbi's
Roger Karn had a double also
Jake Waz was 2-3
On the weekend, after a shakey start in game 1 against a firey Hoyts team, the Bombers came back strong under the pitching of Shawn Sampson, who was 3-1 for the weekend and Justin Heymen, who was 2-0. Hitting wise, Jeff Carr contiues to stay hot at the bat, going 9 for 19, and earning the most valuable offensive performance for the tournament. Justin stock and Bruce Hackett had very nice weekends with the bat, both having 7 hits a piece. Other spots that hits where needed and they seemed to appear with timely hitting from John Dry, Tom Avery, Dan Edholm, BJ Gouger and Jake Waz. Roger Karn caught all 6 games behind the dish and that is no easy task at his age. Dutch Kinner stepped in and had a nice weekend and played in spots to spell guys and to get some tournament experience, let's hope that the young Dutchman sticks it out and contiues to show. Jake Waz played a steady short when he finally appeared on Saturday, must be his alarm clock was set to Polish time.
On a serious note, BJ Gouger suffered and injury from a pitch that struck him in the face. The entire teams hearts sank as he laid in the batters box in pain and seemed to have dampered there spirits on continuing the championship game. It's times like this that show you how a team and friends stick together and care about one another. This is a sport, but it is much more than that with the Bombers team.........get well BJ, we are all thinking about you.
Next stop is the Lackawanna Tournament, the Mickey Brennan Memorial. Let's hope that the winning ways continue. There is going to be some great competition there this weekend. Bring your bats and be ready to hit, if you have and extra flak(ref JC) jacket, throw that in the trunk too, could need it.

Weekend comments........
Saturday was a great day for playing ball and the team came together and won 3 big games and tought that they were rolling. Sunday morning came and like a lot of teams, were looking at game 2 for the day and forgot that they have to win game 1 first. Taking nothing against the Express team, they fought hard, played well, and were errorless on defense. The Bombers will need to look in the mirror and figure out how to come back from this aggonizing defeat and more forward in a positive direction.
Next week is Croghan Ny 4th of July tourney and will be an open tournament this year. The Bombers better bring the bats with them this coming weekend.

For the weekend
Shawn Sampson, Justin Haymen and Ryan Cummings had great outings and gave up a total of 5 runs in 5 games. The Bombers had Sunday all set with Haymen throwing the first game, Cummings the semi's and then Sampson in the finals. We were two out from that scenario coming to pass. But, that is how the game goes sometimes.
Jeff Carr had another stellar weekend and seemed to be the most consistand hitter on the weekend for the team. The Bomber team, as a whole, played well and others contributed when the time was right to lift the team for our wins. The problem on Sunday was that the Waterdown and Team Easton pitching gave the Bombers team fits and seemed like they could never get on a roll to help out pitcher's excellent outings. The team wins together and the team loses together, pitching picks up the hitting and vice versa, but the the Bombers are a team and that is our concept.
In the semi final game, it was a classic matchup between two Isc II powerhouse pitchers. Cummings vs Costello, and up until the bottom of the seventh inning, Cummings had only allowed 1 hit and until that point was throwing an absolute gem. Then, as easy as the Bombers thought they would steal a win, the Team Easton came out and doubled, then reached on an infield error, and with one out they took the game with a 3 run walk off home run. Now I know how it would feel to wake up on Christmas morning and look under the tree and there are no presents. A very disappointing way to lose the semi's and have to drive back to the US thinking about it. That is why you play the game, cause you just never know what is going to happen. But, the Bombers will live to fight another day.

Notes from the weekend;
- Shawn Sampson is certainly handling the role of becomming one of the team leaders for the Bombers. Shawn took the ball on saturday afternoon and never gave it back, throwing 4 straight games. This early in the year to ask a guy Shawn's age to do this is certainly a large task, but he has answered anyone who thinks that age is catching up with him. Shawn took the team on his back in the Elkland B tourney last August and did the same this weekend and showing that he is becoming the face of the Bomber team.
- Jeff Carr had a great weekend at the plate. He batted 11 for 18 (.611), with 2 walks, two home runs and one of the home runs was a walk off 3 run shot against Ricola to win the game and assure that the Bombers would win there side of the round robing bracket.
- Other notes from the offensive side;
Ryan Heymen - 11-20, .550
Bruce Hackett - 8-20, .400
John Dry - 8-20, .400
Justin Stock - 8-20, .400
Roger Karn - 5-14, .357
Let's hope the bats stay hot in Canada in a few weeks when the talent level will definitely by higher.
- Notes and compliments;
- Roger Karn caught all the games Saturday and Sunday in 80 degree, humid weather, which is no easy task.
- Jake Waz played a steady shortstop for the team and make several hustle plays that don't end up in the scorebook, but are noticed by everyone around the ballpark. It's great to see young players with that must love for the game.
- BJ Gouger after a shakey start at third, but came up with a couple big defensive plays later on and key hits including a double in the semi finals.
- Dan Edholm played a great center field and had two throwing put outs on base runners testing his arm and also two big at bats in the championship game to produce rbi's.
- Special thanks to Jay Weitzel, long time fastpitch player and now Minnesota Twins scout who helped coach the team. Once the fastpitch bug bites you, you can never leave the game.
Super weekend for softball and the Elkland fields never looked better. Thanks to Bill Sherman and the ESA gang for putting together another great tourney. The Bomber team came together on many levels and seem to be gaining momentum going into the big tournament in Canada the second weekend in June.

Bombers win Elkland Round Robin with a 3-1 record!
The Bombers win the Elkland Round Robin tourney with a 3 and 1 record.
Games in order
Bombers 12 Oswego 2
Bombers 8 Ricola 1
Bombers 6 Rochester 2
Bombers 6 Elkland Tbellys 8
The Bombers went to Elkland Pa for the Early Bird Round Robin tournament on Saturday, with wonderful weather and came away with a tournament victory. Justin Heyman took the hill first off against the Oswego team lead by pitcher Chuck Smith. The Bombers came away with a 12 to 2 victory. Shawn Sampson took the hill against the Ricola team, Ricola countered with Paul Furlong. The Bombers came away with the victory and moved on to the next game. Rochester was the next game for the Bombers and with a win, they would clinch the tournament because of the other teams wins and losses. So, the Bombers won the game 6 to 2 with Heyman on the hill. With the tournament in hand and with there 4th game in a row, the Bombers took on the Elkland Softball Association team with Gord Scott on the mound. The Bombers sent Shawn Sampson to the hill for them and the Elkland team proved to have a very nice young team and proved to be too much for the Bombers on this day and won the game 8 to 6.
Some notes from the weekend;
Bombers team looks as though they are coming together to have another great year. Sampson and Heymen look way a head of schedule with being in pitching shape. The new additions of Bruce Hackett, Justin Cevette and Ryan Heymen seem to have gelled in with the team real well and produced some very key hits for the weekend. Jake Waz played a great defensive short stop and is starting to figure out the fastpitch hitting part and with seeing more and more pitching he will become much better. The mainstays of the Bombers.......Avery, Carr, Dry, Karn, Gouger, and Edholm were steady as always. Special thanks to Brian Miller for stopping in and playing some games with the Bombers. It sure would be nice to see 'Mills' in a Bomber uni more and more, he is a complete player and a pretty nice guy too.....
Next on the list for the Bombers is Elkland Molly Shermand Memorial Weekend tournament which will be a Saturday round robin with 3 games and then move into a single elimination tournament on Sunday. Hopefully the Bombers can have a great showing........stay tuned.
*another footnote - Edholm still hasn't gone deep for a home run with the Bombers, even after his off season training and bulking up.

Season starts in Elkland in less than a month !
Fastpitch fever is back and the Bombers will be in action very soon !!
Elkland, Pa is the location of 3 events this season that the Bombers will participate in. Elkland, Pa has become, once again, a hot pit of fastpitch softball and has emerged as one of the best places for teams and fans to go and watch the best New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia fastpitch talent around. Twenty years ago Elkland would boast a 36 team Labor Day tourney and although those days have passed, Billy Sherman has put together 4 tournaments this '09 season in Elkland and has shown that although many say fastpitch is a dying sport, in Elkland, it is still one of the hottest fastpitch beds going.
Last season, the Bombers won all 3 events that they participated in Elkland, but to repeat this season will be a very hard task. The tournaments have attracted more and more talent each year and the competition is very competitive and many of the teams this year could walk away with the first place trophy.
The Bombers look forward to returing to action and having the winter days behind them and looking forward to warm weather and great fastpitch action.
Stay tuned for more details on the Bombers........

Bomber's add 'The Waz' to the 2009 Roster
February 2, 2009 --
The NY Bomber's would like to announce the addition of shortstop Jake Wasielewski to the team. Jake became a full time member of the Bomber's last season and by the end of the '08 campaign had become a main stay at short stop.
Jake was a college baseball player at Oneonta College and has adapted his play to the fastpitch circuit. It seems that Jake has definitely adapted to the on field along with the off field activities without a hitch. It is good to see a young player show so much passion in playing the Fastpitch game and it seems like his entire family has fell in love with this game that we all can't get enough of.
Grizzled veteran JD Dry commented that 'The Waz', a fellow Polish country man, is just what the doctor order for someone that brings passion for the game and also a great learning ability from the veteran players. Dry added that Waz was sitting at the Moose club in Elkland and took some advise to get his bat going for the tournament. An old wise tale that Dry had heard that drinking Canadian whiskey the night before you face a good Canadian pitcher will ensure a good day at the plate. Waz took the vet's advise and proceeded to hit 2 home runs on Sunday and the Bombers went on to win the tourney. Dry said, it is great when you can teach a young talent not only on the field, but in the bar.
The Bomber's would like to welcome Jake Waz to the team and hope that he continues to lay down the Polish Hammer on the opposing pitchers.

BOMBER'S ADD HACKETT AND CEVETTE THE 2009 CAMPAIGN !!!!
January 10, 2009 --
The NY Bombers team is proud to announce the arrival of Bruce Hackett to the team on a full time basis for the 2009 campaign.
Hackett is a veteran of the fastpitch circuit and is a proven player in the game and will add a much needed solid stick in the middle of the lineup. Hackett is originally from Elkland, Pa, but now resides in Horseheads/Corning, NY area. Bruce played with the Bombers in the Lackawanna tournament last season and decided that he would like to join the team on a full time basis and the team was eager to bring him aboard.
Bruce's nephew is Justin Cevette and Justin is no stranger to the Bomber lineup. Justin has committed to the Bombers on a part time basis and plans on playing more than half of the tournaments with the Bombers this season. Cevette is also a Elkland, Pa native and still resides there. Cevette's main team is the The Rise out of Pennsylvania, but he loves to come and help out the Bombers whenever he can. Justin is a great stick and plays a numerous amount of positions that makes it easy for him to fill in and a great asset.
Both of these players are grizzled vets and they will prove to be a helpful force for the Bombers in the '09 season. The Bombers would like to welcome Bruce and Justin and wish them a great season ahead.
Stay tuned, there is more to come from the Bombers news on the '09 season.......
