    Match 15 - 19/12/03
The last match before the Christmas break proved to be a bit of a downer for Oviedo as we went down to newly promoted Celta de Vigo 1-0 at home.
As a result we dropped to 13th as Toledo and Real Madrid bot had good victories to leapfrog above us.
Lets hope the 2nd half of the season shows better fortune for the team but it could remain a struggle.

    Spanish Cup R2 - 15/12/03
Promotion chasing Alaves of the 1st division caused the only real shock of the 2nd round by defeating Oviedo 2-1. Oviedo were 1-0 down at the break to a 22nd min goal from striker Bizzari. The Oviedo boys then rallied round to equalise on 56 mins through new midfielder Mutarelli. Disaster struck late in the game when Bento up-ended Bizzari when clean through on goal and was duly sent for an early bath. Knarren stepped up to take the 25 yard free kick and duly despatched the ball into the top corner for a quite wonderful goal. Good luck to Alaves for the rest of the competition, a well deserved victory. As for Oviedo, it's the old cliche that we can now concentrate on the league battle ahead to avoid relegation.

    Match 14 - 12/12/03
At last, along comes only our 2nd league win of the season away at Real Sporting de Gijon. 2 1st half goals from full back Magano and new signing Serea, getting a goal on his debut with a super 30 yard strike. Latoundji, with a 64 min strike pulling one back for Gijon, made it an uneasy finish to the game for the Oviedo defence, but they held firm for a well deserved victory.
This Monday sees the 2nd round cup tie at Alaves, so let's hope the lads can take some confidence from this result into that game and hopefully progress to round 3.
We have loaned CD Sousa to English div 4 side Middlesboro for 4 weeks to hopefully get him some match practice, fans will recall he has played just a couple of games and his debut was of course last seasons Spanish cup final !!

    Match 13 - 04/12/03
Thursday night matches again this week and Oviedo missed the chance to leapfrog this weeks opponents Toledo, again drawing the match 1-1. Oviedo taking a 1 goal lead on 10 mins through midfielder Amieva only for central defender Pinto to square the match for Toledo on 57 mins.
New signing Serea was revealed to the crowd and it is hoped he can soon start knocking some goals in for the goal starved fans of Oviedo.

    Match 12 - 28/11/03
In the first meeting of the clubs since Oviedo's 1-0 Cup final victory, Racing Club de Santander were surely after revenge.Starting as favourites on current form Santander were soon 1 goal up after only 2 mins and things looked bleak for Oviedo. Five mins later though and the score was tied only for Santander to retake the lead 10mins before half time..2-1 at the break. It was loan signing Barbu who got Oviedo's 1st equaliser and it took another loan signing Ollier, playing his last game for Oviedo to again tie the match at 2-2 on 70 mins, and that's how it remained until the final whistle. Another draw leaving Oviedo still looking for our 2nd win of the season.

    Match 11 - 21/11/03
Some relief for management and fans alike this week as the run of defeats was halted. Although a win was hoped for, a draw was probably a fair result against a spirited Levante team.
Gonzalez finally got off the mark to bring a smile to manager Elliott's face. The strikers must have felt a cloud was hanging over there heads being scoreless all season, but perhaps now we may see a run of goals..we can only hope things are on the up from now on.

    Match 10 - 13/11/03
Thursday games this week and again no respite for Oviedo as we went down yet again to a 1-0 scoreline. Newly promoted Atletico de Madrid notching up their 4th league win of the season with the solitary strike from Paunovic midway through the 2nd half. The board issued a statement saying that after meeting manager Elliott at the weekend, his job was secure after he assured us that things can be pulled around.

    Match 9 - 08/11/03
This weeks games were held over until Saturday morning but this brought no change to our luck as we were comfortably beaten by the league champions.
Espanyol's scorers were Stowell and Brannigan, one in each half to inflict more misery for Oviedo's management and fans alike. Another loan signing was brought in this week to hopefully break the goal drought in the forward positions. Barbu, who plays for Dumbarton has 3 goals so far this season and it is hoped his confidence rubs off onto the other strikers during his time here.

    Match 8 - 31/10/03
Manager Steve Elliott was banished to the stands after losing it with the referee this week when he awarded Bilbao a penalty. "As I saw it Igoroin, their striker, took a dive as Esteban went to gather the ball at his feet, I could not believe it as he gave them a penalty and then sent our GK off for good measure. This decision has cost us a point when I thought our defence today was again superb. But we are now in the drop zone with Espanyol our next opponents."
On a brighter note we made our 1st full signing of the season in Mutarelli from Airdrie so he has good experience and there are high hopes for him.

    Match 7 - 24/10/03
A point gained in this weeks away fixture at Deportivo de La Coruna but still no goals scored. That's our 4th 0-0 away draw including the Uefa Cup tie so far this season after no draws at all last season.
One loan signing was brought in this week, Ollier from Oxford Utd, it is hoped he will add some extra quality to midfield but he is short on match fitness at the moment.
Further deals are hoped for this week to boost the squad as lethargy is creeping in.

    Match 6 - 17/10/03
There was no turnaround in fortunes for the Oviedo boys as we lost again to a solitary goal against current leaders Lleida. Boss Steve Elliott is currently scratching his head as to Oviedo's current predicament. Every game seems to be a tough one at the moment and our league position might get worse before it gets better as our strikers are still firing blanks.

    Uefa Cup 1st round 2nd leg - 13/10/03
Well an improved performance overall against Stranraer, the Scottish premier league's current top scorers but 0-0 the scoreline when 2 goals were required tells it's own story. The strikers confidence must be at an all time low at the moment, but with Lleida coming up in our next league match let's hope they can raise their game for that one.

    Match 5 - 10/10/03
Another hard game was expected against Hercules who had made a good start to the season, but once again the goal shy strikers failed to score and we went down to the solitary goal.
Things don't get any easier as we entertain leaders Lleida next week after facing Stranraer in the Uefa Cup 1st round 2nd leg.Trailing 2-1from the 1st leg we have to remain optimistic that current form will change for the better.

    Match 4 - 03/10/03
A difficult match was envisaged in our home game against Real Sociedad and a solid start was required after the early disasterous defending against Stranraer in the Uefa cup, but it was not to be, this time 2 goals down after 23 mins and the game was over as Sociedad shut up shop. 5 games played this year so far and no striker has scored, this has got to change!!!!

    Uefa Cup 1st round 1st leg - 29/09/03
Expectations were high in our 1st european match for 2 seasons at home to Stranraer but within 3 minutes we were 2 goals down !!!
We managed to get one back through full back Rabarivony just after half time but it will take a huge effort to pull this one back in the 2nd leg.

    Match 3 - 26/09/03
Our 2nd away league game of the season ended with another 0-0 draw, this time at Real Valladolid. At least we have kept clean sheets but what are the forwards playing at. We have got to start hitting the net guys !!!!!

    Match 2 - 19/09/03
A vital victory in our 1st home game of the season over Real Betis Balompie was achieved with a 2-1 scoreline. New club captain Amieva equalised for Oviedo just three minutes after falling behind, before full-back Magano got what proved to be the winner midway through the 2nd-half. The stikers are off the boil at the moment so it's nice to see goals coming from other positions in the team to keep us in the mix.

    Match 1 - 12/09/03
Our 1st league match of the new season away at Real Madrid resulted in a 0-0 stalemate. Obviously our defence did superb today holding the prolific strikeforce of Madrid at bay. We had a few 1st choice strikers out ourselves today through suspension so a draw is a good start for us.
So we gained a draw in our 1st game whereas no draws came from the whole of last season, 22 wins, 8 defeats.
Next match - Home to Real Betis Balompie

    Season 8 completed

Real Oviedo signed off season 8 with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Real Sporting de Gijon.
Retiring captain Paulo Cristallini put in a MOM performance in his last match of his career.
The win gauranteed a Uefa Cup in 4th place although news filtered through that 6th place would have been sufficient.

Overall a very satisfying season with the Spanish Cup added to the trophy room and 4th place in the league.

    League news - 29/08/03
After all the celebrations and elation of winning the Spanish Cup final it was back to league action to try to secure the Uefa Cup 4th place spot. Oviedo travelled to already relegated Tenerife and came away easy 3-0 victors. Manager Steve Elliott said" This was a very pleasing win for us as we could have slipped on this potential banana skin and lost our chance of automatic European qualification if our minds hadn't been on the job today. The lads are 100% on the job in hand and that's how I like it."

Other news - Club captain Paulo Cristallini will be playing his last game for the club in our last league fixture this season and will be sorely missed. He has been instumental in our turnaround of performance since we were relegation strugglers last season and we wish him well in his retirement.

    Cup news - 26/08/03
Champagne corks were popping after Oviedo's 1-0 win over Racing Club de Santander. The only goal of this tight game coming from striker Garny on 39 mins. There was some controversy in the 2nd half when Marcos and Garny had a spat resulting in both players receiving their marching orders.

    Delighted manager Steve Elliott said
"I knew this would be a tight game but the lads put on a very solid display at the back, I'd particully enjoyed Sousa's commanding display on what was his debut for the club after being signed from the youth academy earlier in the season. It was a cracking goal from veteran Garny to give us the trophy and I don't mind the lads celebrating tonight but they know they will need to get their minds and bodies 100% on track for our remaining league fixtures"

    Previous news - 22/08/03
Comprehensive league win 4-1 over Real Zaragoza maintains our 4th position to give automatic Uefa Cup spot.

At the post match press conference manager Steve Elliott spoke of mixed feelings for some players after the win, especially Paulo Bento who after scoring his 2nd goal of the season from defence then picked up his 5th booking to rule himself out of the Cup final.
"This opens the way for new recruit Alberto Sousa to make his debut for Oviedo and what a debut to make - the Spanish Cup Final !!!!"

"The lads are in top form at the moment but it will be no easy task against Racing Club de Santander who have disposed of Espanyol and Bilbao in their cup run"
"We may be starting at favourites but I see it as being a close contest as I still consider Santander to be a Premier league side in player quality"

May the best team win as long as it's us !!

    Previous league news - 15/08/03
Oviedo hold firm to record solid 1-0 victory at Levante.
This gives us every hope of an automatic Uefa Cup place if 4th place can be maintained, otherwise it's down to pre-qualification if we drop to 5th or 6th.
Lleida drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad and slip to 5th, a good result against a top team and we could benefit from an easier looking run-in on paper. But as we all know we are playing on grass - not paper.
    Previous cup news - 11/08/03 -
The Oviedo boys were in a joyous mood upon reaching the Spanish Cup final with a very tight 1-0 victory over a couragous Albacete Balompie outfit.

Surprisingly though we will meet Racing Club de Santander in the final after they knocked out a strong Athletic Club de Bilbao 2-0 after extra time.

    BRING IT ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Previous news 08/08/03 -
Oviedo return to winning ways with a sound 3-0 victory over Real Betis Balompie. Davide Ratti with a lovely brace moves him to the top of the Oviedo goalscorers chart with 11.

This sets us up nicely for this Monday's Cup Semi-final against 2nd division leaders Albacete Balompie. The lads will be giving Albacete every respect and are determined not to become the latest Premier team to make a shock exit in the competition.

    Previous news 01/08/03 -
Espanyol bring Oviedo crashing back down to earth with a 3-1 victory in the league.

We had high hopes of causing an upset and we really wanted to be the first team to beat Espanyol in the league but it was not to be.

Espanyol are a quality side and look certainties to take the league title.

We can still secure an automatic Uefa Cup place and hopefully get to and win the Spanish Cup final were manager Steve Elliott's consoling words to his players.

    Previous news 25/07/03 -
Oviedo stuff current champions Bilbao 3-0 with Josebo Igartua getting a hat-trick.

Great stuff lads...let's hope we can keep this up for the rest of the season.

We still have the Spanish Cup within our grasp if we can keep this form going.

I can't fault any of you on todays performance...terrific !!!!
