This past weekend the boys gave their coach a nice birthday present with a tournament championship at the ECTB sponsored USSSA World Series Qualifier in Orange County, NY. The Blue Knights finished the weekend with a 5-0 record, but more importantly the team came together during the weekend! Our parents should be proud of their children’s performance on and off the field.

Anthony Repetto and Angelo Biondo had back-to back RBI doubles in the second inning as a sign of things to come for the remainder of the tournament. Kyle Olsen Selected to Empire State Team
A wonderful season has been topped off by a great accomplishment!! Kyle Olsen led the North Babylon Varsity baseball team in multiple hitting and pitching categories during the 2008 campaign. Olsen garnered All-County honors, was nominated for a gold glove and was the League III silver slugger award winner. This week Kyle was selected as member of the 2008 Empire State Team. Olsen joins Mike Amendola (2005) and John Castellano (1995) as the only North Babylon baseball players selected for this elite team since 1990.
Olsen was a member of the 2007 Blue Knights. Kyle and Rob Griffth teamed up to be a potent duo in middle of the order as they terrorized opponents all last summer. Olsen batted .358 with 3 HRs, 24 runs scored and 25 RBIs in 31 games played. Kyle also had 3 wins and 3 saves and stuck out 36 batters while throwing 33 1/3 innings pitched.
Along with Kyle Olsen, James Lomingino was selected to the Empire State team. Lomangino was a member of the PAL Rangers and played last Labor Day weekend with the Blue Knights. Lomangino tossed a no-hitter and batted .308 during that weekend tournament. Bobby Vitulano was selected as an alternate to team. Vitulano played for the PAL Rangers the past two seasons and is currently a member of the PAL Blue Knights and their leading hitter. Great job by all of the players!!!
The Empire State team won their second consecutive gold medal at the 2007 Empire State Games, the first back-to-back Gold Medal team since 2000-01 and the third back-to-back Gold Medalist team overall (1994-95). The Gold Medalist team increases Long Island's total to seven, the most of any region since the Game's inception in 1990. Since 1990 Long Island has medaled in every year except for two, 1997 and 2003, winning four silver medals and four bronze medals in addition to the seven gold medals. The games begin on July 23rd.

A great start to the summer season! One bad inning should not taint what was an impressive 5-1 weekend of baseball. Our team is still getting to know each other and play together. From a coaching standpoint I learned more about our team in Sunday evening’s loss than any other game. Our boys played with heart, battled through multiple adverse situations, and finished the game with class. All in all the team played very well!

Thank you to all the parents for the great support this weekend and I will forward the Pennsylvania info as soon as I have the finalized details.

Elite All Star World Classic NIT - June 6 - June 7 - Recap

Labor Day Tournament 2007
Our first game on Saturday evening Lou Galioto and Kyle Olsen did a great job shutting down the Heat in a 4-3 victory. The second saw two amazing feats - first, James Lomangino tossed a no-hitter with 12 Ks in an absolutely dominating performance!!! Also, Rob Griffith hit a Grand Slam to put the game out reach in a perfomance with great personal meaning!

After a lackluster first game the Knights bounced back for an exciting come from behind victory in the second game on Sunday. Rob Griffith's three run homerun was the difference as Vinny Aprano did a great job on the mound for the win.

What an amazing comeback!!!! Congratulations on being the Labor Day Tournament at Baseball Heaven Champions. After falling behind 6-0 early the Knights battled back to 6-5. Two innings later at 8-5 the Knights put a 14 spot in the fourth inning and left TNT on the field for a 19-8 victory. Great job by all!!

I would also like to welcome Vinny Aprano, Andy Gonzalez and James Lomangino to the Knights for weekend and thank them for their effort and performance.

RYO 4th of July Tournament 2007 - Wrap Up
Congratulations on going a perfect 5-0 and winning the RYO 4th of July Tournament!!! Each player gave a great team effort that contributed to our success. Just a few notes from the weekend.

Our Pitching staff of Kyle Olsen, Casey Quinn, Jesse Simichich, Joe Giovanniello, Rob Macaluso, and Lou Galioto had a combined ERA for the weekend of 1.08.

Some hitting standouts:
Rob Griffith - .667 - 5 RBIs - 3 R - SB
Dan Muller - .667 - 5 RBIs - 3 R, 4 SB (including home)
Adam Rodriguez - .625 - .765 OBP - 5 RBIs - 4 R - 3 SB
Joe Giovanniello - .667 - . 778 OBP - 5 RBIs
Jesse Simichich - .538 - 5 RBIs - 5 SB
Lou Galioto - .417 - .533 OBP - 4 RBIs - 5 R - 3 SB

On defense, Jon Cotter did an outstanding job catching all but 2 innings behind the plate. Jon threw out 57% of would be base stealers (8 of 14) and saved the game on Fri evening by hustling after a Wild pitch and throwing the tying run out at the plate. Sean Apuzzo also played a nice 2B all weekend and gave Jon a breather by catching a few innings on Sunday morning.

New York USSSA State Championship (16U) June 2007 - Wrap-up

Our next tournament will be the weekend of June 29 to July 2. We will be participating in the RYO 4th of July Baseball Tournament on Long Island (PAL Complex).
