Paschal ends 26-game losing streak August 29, 2008 --
By DREW DAVISON
Special to the Star-Telegram
ARLINGTON — It had the feeling of a team winning a state championship. The Fort Worth Paschal players stormed the field, lifted their coach on their shoulders and some even shed a few tears.
You can’t blame them, though. After enduring 2 1/2 seasons — 26 games to be exact — without winning a game, it was a monumental victory because the Paschal Panthers defeated the Arlington Sam Houston Texans 23-20 in dramatic, come-from-behind fashion at Wilemon Field.
"It was due," second-year Paschal coach Matt Cook said. "It was monumental. It’s good not to have to talk about the 26-game losing streak anymore. We knew we could change that. This win is for those players that helped build our program."
The first victory couldn’t have been more dramatic, either. With less than 8 minutes remaining, Sam Houston had an 80-yard touchdown pass called back because of a block-in-the-back penalty. That score would’ve given the Texans a two-score lead.
Instead, on the next play, linebacker Matt Blum intercepted a pass, setting up the Panthers at Sam Houston’s 30-yard line.
After seven plays, Paschal faced a fourth-and-goal from the 7. All game, the Panthers relied on junior running back Emmanuel Smith, who finished with 214 rushing yards. So, the Texans played the run. Cook, however, saw that and decided to run what he calls a "power pass play."
Paschal quarterback Brian Gallagher scrambled and found his second option, Angel Argueta, open in the back of the end zone. Gallagher floated a pass just over two defenders and Argueta hauled it in for the go-ahead score.
It was the second touchdown for Paschal in the fourth quarter, as it overcame a 20-8 deficit. Earlier in the quarter, Smith had a 9-yard scoring run to cut the lead to 20-15.
For the first time in two years Fort Worth Paschal (1-0) has the chance to put together a win streak. Paschal broke a 26-game losing streak and enters Friday’s game with a renewed confidence in the program’s direction. Paschal faces Nimitz (1-0), who knocked off Paschal’s District 3-5A colleague Haltom last week, so this could serve as a bit of a barometer game for the Paschal. Both teams bring strong running games that topped the 250-yard rushing mark in last week’s games.
There will be a Pep Rally at Paschal on Friday at 11:15 AM. Also, make plans to attend the team sendoff on Friday at 3:50 PM at the Paschal Fieldhouse.

Final: Paschal 38, Nimitz 37
Posted: Saturday, September 06, 2008
Final: Paschal 38, Nimitz 37
Fort Worth Paschal won in dramatic fashion over Irving Nimitz at Irving Schools Stadium on Friday. With three seconds left, the Panthers trailed Nimitz 37-32 and had the ball on their own 38-yard-line. Quarterback Brian Gallagher dropped back and threw a perfect strike down the middle of the field to running back Emmanuel Smith, who caught it and ran past Vikings defenders en route to the winning touchdown. Gallagher finished the game 11-for-27 for 241 yards and two touchdowns.
The Panthers take on Arlington Heights Friday Night
This is a matchup of undefeated Fort Worth teams. Paschal (2-0) carries momentum from two comeback victories, including last week’s last-play win against Irving Nimitz. The Panthers are getting strong rushing from running back Emmanuel Smith (who caught the game-winning score last week), and quarterback Brian Gallagher is showing promise in directing the Panthers’ multiple sets. Defensively, the Panthers are focused on improving against the run. Heights (2-0) is showing big-play ability with sophomore wide receiver Marquis Jackson. He scored on a 56-yard reverse and a 69-yard catch last week. But penalties slowed the Jackets – three touchdowns were called back against Azle, plus a fake field-goal attempt.

GO PANTHERS!!!
The Panthers (3-1) overcame three early turnovers on the way to pleasing a large homecoming crowd with a victory over Fort Worth South Hills (0-3) at Farrington Field. On the second play from scrimmage, Panthers halfback Emmanuel Smith took a handoff around the right tackle and scampered 40 yards to set up a 6-yard William Hix touchdown run.
The Panthers take on the Weatherford Kangaroos Friday in Weatherford September 22, 2008 --
Paschal (3-1) enters as one of only three teams in District 3-5A with a winning record. Paschal running back Emmanuel Smith, is third among area Class 5A rushers with 643 yards and 8 touchdowns. Weatherford (0-4) meanwhile is winless but the Kangaroos played a tough pre-district schedule that included Aledo, Arlington Lamar and Coppell. Despite the start, the Kangaroos are one of three winless teams in 3-5A and have a playoff shot with four teams in line for the postseason. - Star-Telegram.

Panthers Fall to ‘roos as Weatherford Enjoys Full Home Field Advantage
We tell ourselves it’s just a game, and in the end, that’s exactly what it is. But it’s not all that it is, not really, even if we discount much of what we invest in each caught pass or fumbled ball. During this glorious 10-week span of fall, we are privileged to be part of something larger than ourselves, on the periphery perhaps, but nevertheless part of a special band of young men who bravely swam against popular sentiment, believed in the redemptive power of hard work and dedicated themselves to the proposition that one can be proud of playing football at Paschal High School.
There’s always been a tension between sports and academics, with some going so far as to question the very value of athletics. It does nothing to further academic success, they hiss, and detracts from the educational mission of the school.
Panther Nation knows better. The roster of academic all-district athletes is heavy with Paschal student-athletes, of course. But beyond that, Panther Nation knows that many players are staying in school and maintaining passing grades for the privilege of sweating, aching, hurting, puking and yes, learning, as the school’s gridiron representatives. It’s hard to put a value on that. Meantime, the student body has become invigorated by the team’s resurgence, and the Panthers’ Horatio Alger rise has shown this extraordinary group of young men, and its followers, that hard work and dedication really do matter no matter the context. Got a bad mark in math? Study and practice can fix that. Having trouble understanding “The Nebelungenlied”? Nothing a little re-reading, concentration and diligence can’t lick.
The Duke of Wellington may or may not have said that the “Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton,” but to quibble about the origins is to miss the larger message. Athletics do matter, and the lessons learned on the field are incalculably valuable to players and fans alike in every facet of life.
Most objective observers would peg two seasons ago as a low-water mark for Panthers’ football. In the midst of a tough, beat-down season, the Panthers traveled to Weatherford, and in the process of being humiliated 70-something to nothing, the entire program appeared to spit the bit. No question some continued to play with heart and pride, but the overall sense was of a program that, like a dog that’s been beat too much, simply gave up. All that changed in 2007. True, the team was 0-10. But the Panthers were improving each week, learning that the past was not a prison but a stepping stone to better things. And in the process, they were rediscovering that nebulous thing we call self-respect. Win, lose or draw, they could look at themselves in the mirror and know they’d given honest and complete effort.

Paschal plays Haltom High on Friday night October 7, 2008 --
FW Paschal vs. Haltom
7:30 p.m., at Birdville FAAC, North Richland Hills
One team will pick up its first district win after both started District 3-5A play at 0-2. Paschal (3-3) maintained a .500 record while Haltom (0-6) remains winless. Paschal running back Emmanuel Smith ranks third among area Class 5A running backs with 847 yards and 10 touchdowns. Smith averages 6.5 yards per carry. Despite the losing record Haltom has been competitive, with three losses coming by three points or less.
Panthers Endure Game to Forget – and to Remember -- as They Prepare for Haltom
Conventional wisdom holds that rebuilding teams will lose some close games as they learn how to win. The Panthers’ game against Weatherford this season and games against Dallas Molina, South Hills, Granbury and North Crowley last season show this principle in action. The close games show the often razor-thin margin between victory and loss, between success and failure, demonstrate in stark relief how little things can be magnified. One unfortunate block in the back, one missed tackle, one fumble, one dropped pass or one blown assignment can decide a team’s fate.
Conventional wisdom appears to be silent, however, about blowout losses. They are, nevertheless, instructive.
What we’re really talking about here, of course, is experience. Experience is the coin of the realm in football as in life. Whether you’re interviewing for a job as a sheetrock salesman, installing a septic tank, trying to deliver toe-curling kisses or wallpapering your home, experience matters. So too in football. And while the Paschal Panthers football program has experience in many things, winning hasn’t been one of them. The Panthers entered the season riding a 26-game losing streak. But in the course of the last 10 losses, the Panthers were learning something about what it takes to win. Putting those lessons to work, the team jumped out to a 2-0 start and entered Friday’s game against the Abilene Eagles with a 3-2 record.
Consider the Panthers a work in progress. They’re still learning how to win. The team is still getting the experience it needs to become the dominant juggernaut it aspires to be. What better experience, then, than playing one of the state’s top teams? As Mark Twain once observed, “A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way.”
The Panthers take on the Richland Rebels this week. October 15, 2008 --
Richland vs. Fort Worth Paschal
7:30 p.m., Farrington Field, Fort Worth
The Rebels (6-0, 2-0 District 3-5A) look to keep their unbeaten season intact against struggling Paschal (3-4, 0-3). The Panthers opened the year with a pair of victories but have dropped three straight to open district play. Richland garnered plenty of attention for its summer 7-on-7 title and the Rebels’ diverse spread offense. The Rebels are the only Class 5A team with two receivers (Justin Erickson and Phillip Gonzales both with 406 yards) in the Top 10 among area receivers. However, the Richland defense has grown into the area’s No. 2-ranked defense with a 173.2 yards allowed per game average. Paschal can move the ball through the air, too. Quarterback Brian Gallagher has thrown for 964 yards and seven touchdowns, one a last-second game-winner. Emmanuel Smith matches that production on the ground, rushing for 972 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Unbeaten Richland overpowers Paschal October 20, 2008 --
Fort Worth Paschal at North Crowley
7:30 p.m. North Crowley Panther Stadium, Fort Worth
North Crowley (2-5, 2-1) can maintain third place in District 3-5A with a win here. The team started the year 0-4 but knocked off Haltom and Burleson in district play to put itself in a good spot in the playoff race. Paschal (3-5, 0-4) is looking for its first district win. Running back Emmanuel Smith is second in the area among Class 5A rushers with 1,172 yards.

Dear Football Families,
What a great Kick-off we had tonight. What a perfect night to introduce all our boys. What a thrill it was to see such great numbers on the field and in the stands.. This week two of our 2009 graduates left to continue their education and play football another leaves next week, William Hix left for San Antonio to play for Trinity. Keafer Clegg left today for Howard Payne University to play for them.. Next week Abraham Leal will leave to follow his dream at Lon Morris University in East Texas, We will miss them and we know their families are trying to get use to them not being home. What these young men have done is show 190 eager guys that if they want it and will work for it this could happen to them. We congratulate them all for opening the door to a world of possibilities.
This year's theme is Don't Stop Believing. If you looked around tonight you could surely tell we have come a very long way and we have not stopped believing. Our stands were full and there is a real excitement in the air about PASCHAL FOOTBALL. I can hardly wait to see what happens at our scrimmage, We want to thank everyone for coming out tonight and supporting our teams.
And while we are thanking people, our volunteers were absolutely AMAZING! There were people picking up trash, making popcorn, selling spirit wear, painting beautiful signs, cooking, serving, taking care of our panther pack, playing music, hauling ice, blowing up balloons and the list goes on and on. We could not ask for better volunteers. When I looked across the mass of people I didn't see just parents or friends helping I saw heroes. There they were doing every tasks imaginable and I could see a purple cape blowing behind each one of them, with a "P" on it. They were there to lend a hand, to help with whatever needed to be done to make this a night to remember. Without you none of this would have been possible, Thank you for making the difference and making this our most successful kick-off ever.
Way to go cheerleaders.! What fun everyone had making the spirit signs, noisemakers and getting their faces painted. We appreciate all you do. Last but not least what would a football game be without our award winning band. They entertained us and get us in the mood to cheer. As always you did a wonderful job.
So now the 2-a-days are over our boys have survived. We're ready to move forward and get the first win at the season opener, I hope to see everyone there. Go Get 'em Panthers!

Teresa

Panthers Prepared to Take on Texans August 26, 2009 --
BY GEOFF CAMPBELL
Special to Panther Football
The vision quest is an integral part of growing up in many Native American cultures. When ready, a child fasts and embarks alone into the wilderness on a personal, spiritual quest.
The child focuses on the spirit world, is often visited by a guardian or power animal and is able to discern his or her life direction.
Though most often associated with Native American tribes, the vision quest as rite of initiation is practiced worldwide by many cultures. It is a ritual that seeks to answer age-old questions. Who am I? Why am I here? Practitioners believe vision quests help individuals find their place in the world, discover their meaning and flower into the adults they are to become.
The Paschal Panthers, you might say, have been on a vision quest the past two football seasons. And guided by their power animal, the panther, team members in 2007 learned they could be competitive. In 2008, Paschal players learned they could win...Click Here to read the rest of Geoff's article
