2009 Championship Games
What a great way to start the championship series at PNC Park this year. The weather held out and we had four great games.
With both teams having two previous little league championships both Wilkinsburg and Sq. Hill set their sights on a third championship. With both teams playing a great defensive game the score came down to only a few runs. Sq. Hill started the scoring off with 1 run in the first, but Wilkinsburg's Brian Brown had something to say about that. Brian gave the Wilkinsburg fans something to cheer about when he hit 1 of his 2 homeruns in the 2nd inning with Tone Thomas on first. After a few more runs scored by Sq. Hill, 2 coming from Ben Morganstern, the score was now 5-3 in favor of Sq. Hill. However Mr. Brown wasn't ready to give up. Brian came up in the last inning with two outs and hit his 2nd homerun, but unfortunatley it was a solo shot bringing Wilkinsburg within 1. Sq. Hill pitcher Sam Greenberg did his best to battle back from the homerun and doing so by striking out the number 5 batter to end the game. Both teams played an incredible game with the final score being Sq. Hill-5 Wilkinsburg-4.
The second game of the evening was a 12 and under girls slo-pitch game played between number one seeded Washington Heights Athletic Association and three seeded South Side Athletic Association. South Side jumped out to an early 3 to 0 lead with key hits at the top of the lineup by Natalie Sinclair, Nicole Rominie, and Monica "Mo" Demmel. A determined Washington Heights team answered right back in the bottom of the first inning when Victoria Bullotta, Kelsie Klein, Alexis Byrne, and Alexis Keefe scored the first four runs of the game for Mount Washington. The Kelsie Klein and Alexis Byrne tandum struck again in the third inning with back to back singles resulting in two runs. The 6 to 3 lead built by Washington Heights proved to be more than enough for pitcher Cheyenne Rethage who pitched a complete game. Washington Heights' win came under head coach Jamie Liscio, who is in her first year as Mount Washington's 12 and under girl's slo-pitch team. Both teams fought hard and made the game an exciting one for all the fans attending at PNC Park.
The third game of the night at PNC Park was the battle of the Mount Washington 12 and under girl's fast pitch teams. Mount Washington #1 (wearing blue uniforms) and Mount Washington #2 (wearing orange uniforms) competed in a fast and well-played game. The game was a pitcher's dominated game for most of the night. WHAA #1 put hard throwing hurler Lauren Zola on the hill to start the game, while WHAA #2 started the game with Miranda Piccolini. Miranda pitched 5 strong, scoreless innings and struck out 7 batters. Lauren answered back with a strong outing of her own striking out 13 batters and throwing a 6 inning complete game. The only blemish to Lauren's near flawless game was a 3 run fifth inning. The big hit in the inning came by Beth Palmer, who fouled off numerous pitches before hitting a single down the first base line which plated 2. Jessica Cook closed out the game pitching the sixth and seventh innings and gave Mount Washington#2 the 3 to 0 win.
The final game of the night was played by the two top seeds in the 15 and under girl's fast pitch playoff bracket. Number one seeded Washington Heights had a 12 and 1 regular season record, while McKeesport had an 11 and 3 record. Despite beating McKeesport twice during the season, Mount Washington's lone loss came to the Tigers. Much like the 12 and under game that came before it, the 15 and under fast pitch game was a pitcher's duel. Starting pitchers Chelsea Zola (Washington Heights) and Ashley Likar (McKeesport) battled each other the entire night and dominated most of the game. McKeesport was able to jump out to an early lead with an RBI double by clean-up hitter Nicolle Driscoll. Her double scored Shelby Bendick who lead off the game with a double of her own. In the bottom half of the first inning Washington Heights answered right back with an RBI single by Tara Llewellyn, which scored Chelsea Zola who lead off the inning with a single. In the bottom half of the second inning Mount Washington added two more runs as Sydney Brinton and Kaylee Girdwood scored on Jena Kolb's two run single. The 3 to 1 lead proved to be more than enough for Mount Washington pitching. Chelsea Zola pitched three scoreless innings to start the game, while striking out 8 batters. Kaylee Girdwood came in to finish the game by pitching four dominating innings in which she struck out 10 out of 12 batters. Ashley Likar pitched a complete game for McKeesport, despite earning the loss. She struck out 7 batters and scattered 5 hits. With the 3 to 1 win, Washington Heights Athletic Association swept the Mayor's Cup softball championships, and added to their record 25 Mayor's Cup titles.
To round out the series...
Greenfield/Green defeated Braddock in a nail biter 8-7 for the Pony championship.
The game went ten innings with both teams battling to the end.
Carnegie got the better of a tough young Carrick#2 team 7-5 to win the Colt championship.
And WHAA finished the evening by winning their third SuperColt championship in the past three years by a 4-1 score over Morningside.
BIG League congratulates all the champions and finalist and thank them for making this a memorable championship series.
The Awards cerimony will be held at PNC Park on Wednesday August 5th prior to the Pirates game.
