Nicknames
Throughout the banter overs the months since the establishing of the Runshaw Poker Scene, passed on from Newman folk, a number of nick names have been delegated to some of the players to grace the green baize at the house of poker, a garage on Blackgate Lane.
Although not everyone has succumbed to a derogatory name-tag, it is surely only a matter of time before everyone in the league will be blessed with a name that they will most likely despise.
Here are a selection of some of the league's members and their classy connotative conundrums, now with explanations...
Pete "The Barnicle" Townsley: A 'barnicle' being one of those small brown objects that sticks to rocks and the like, compared to Pete's style of play.
Adam "Wildcard" Tree: Formally dubbed "The Udders" due to being 'milked' on more than one occasion - i.e. seeming 'giving' his chips away. Managed to shake off the name, and chose "Wildcard". No one except Ball has a problem with the name change, so it stuck.
Ed "Manhattan" Forshaw: After having a few more comical name tags, such as 'Fold-Forshaw' (as in fold-for-sure, relevant to his conservative playing style), Ed managed to implement his preferred choice of nick name, after a period of propaganda worthy of Goebbels himself. 'Manhattan' refers to Ed's chip-stack, supposedly mimicking the Manhattan Skyline.
James "The Nuts" Ball: This rather basic and common nick name has been adopted by the usual host of RPL poker due to it's appropriatness to his name (i.e. ball->nut...yes, i don't find it funny either). And since Ball is not a stranger to ranting, most think it best not to bring up the subject due to more ear-bashing, adding to negative comments about a sea of issues, such as music taste, haircuts, poker-based preferences, university choices, the list goes on....)
Jay "The Wild Boar" Bethell: Bethell was hesitant in deciding upon a nick name for himself, due to being picky about something which may stick to him for some time (like a barnicle if you will). As he sees himself inevitably ending up on the WPT scene, he decided against calling himself Jay "Hellmuth" Bethell, as this would be inappropriate when playing against his favoured poker player. "The Wild Boar" is loosely based upon his wild style of play, but has little meaning other than this, and if a better name is devised, you will be sure to hear about it here.
Chris "The Gailforce" Gibirdi: A self-explanitory headline gives players a warning in advance that no PPT player knows what to expect. A devastating gust of poker force or mass amounts of tilt, easterly 9 or 10.
Ben "Black Beauty" Ward: Named so because has come to be known as 'the dark horse' in many of the competitions he enters. Burst onto the poker scene with a 100% record after his first few games. Since then has failed to live up to his name, but should not be ruled out.
Mark 'The Analyser' Holden: One of the founding members of the poker scene, Lumpa has been nick-named so due to his seemingly sub-conscious commentary of the unfolding events at the table. Some voice their opinions about this, but other players, such as Bethell, prefer to have a player present to inform them of when they have hit a Royal Flush...
Chris "The Good Jamaican" Molyneux: Named so for three reasons. 1: his hair - roughly based upon that or Mr. Marley & chums. 2: If asked for his cards, he will usually tell you his hands, which is very good of him. 3: In the past, has actually gave people financially challenged a portion of his chip stack, as that is how he "likes the game to be played". Very honourable, and a well-deserved nick-name (whether he likes it or not).
Andy 'Kenny' Crompton: Crompo has won a large number of pots with, and has to his own admission, a certain chemistry when it comes to holding a king or two in his hand, which he has christened 'Kenny'. Although the relationship between the Kings and Crompo has often been somewhat turbulant, RPL members are still graced on a regular basis of the now legendary catchphrase "Hey Kenny, nice to see ya".
Not all nick-names have yet been posted, and any blatanty self-explanatory names, or any having absolutely nothing to do with poker, may well be denied having explanations given, writing all of this takes time you know.
