Former Pro Baller signs for Phoenix
The club is delighted to announce that Trudie Hapgood has signed up to play for the NL Seniors.
Trudie arrived in Scotland earlier this year to lead basketballscotland's Elite Programme after working in development projects for the Australian Sports Commission in Malta and a stint coaching with Welsh professional team Rhondda Rebels and brings a massive amount of playing and coaching experience.

Her playing background includes representing Australian youth and senior squads; being a scholarship athlete at the Australian Institute of Sport; an All-American candidate while playing for the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) in NCAA Division 1 where she played in the NCAA Tournament; and a ten year professional career that included two national championships in the Australian National Basketball League (WNBL).

As a coach, Trudie has gained valuable experience during stints as a Head Coach in Division 1 of the Australian Basketball Association; Assistant Coach with a Junior College in Washington State; full-time development officer in schools; and coach at Australia's Intensive Training Centres talent development camps. Trudie was also selected for the Coaches Award at the FIBA Europe Girls Camp in Slovenia 2007 with the resulting scholarship enabling her to attend Eurobasket Women's Final Four that summer.

Trudie’s involvement is a fantastic boost for the Scottish woman's game as she brings her incredible skills and experience both on and off the court and this will be of tremendous benefit, particularly to Phoenix’s younger players and we wish her well during her stay here in Scotland.

    National Raffle
The club has an excellent opportunity to raise some much needed funds through selling tickets for this years basketballscotland raffle which offers as top prize two flights to New York plus tickets for an NBA game.
The club receives 50p for every ticket sold so all players are requested to sell at least twenty tickets each (2 books).
Please ensure you ask for your ticket allocation from your head coach or team manager when training restarts after the school holidays on Monday 26th October.

    Lothian Seniors Do the Double
May 4, 2009  --   Phoenix's Lothian Seniors rounded off the perfect season when they beat great rivals Midlothian Saints 57-50 to lift the Lothian Cup and complete a fabulous League and Cup double for the first time in their history.

    Great job girls...........

    Hectic Start to 2009
The New Year finally got under way as Phoenix players, coaches, mums, dads and hingers-on of all ages, ability and sizes were involved in a hectic weekend of activities.

On Saturday over 35 members turned up for stewarding duties at the BUPA Great North Run in Holyrood Park which netted the club over £700 in funds and a massive thanks go out to everyone who took part in this event with special mention to the rock steady Rossi family who organised the event (more about them later!!)

After thawing out, the action turned towards the basketball court on Sunday with the Cadettes facing St Maurice in National League action and, despite being short of a few starters, proceeded to chalk up a strong win for the new coaching team of Liza and Hazel with many of the youngsters stepping up with strong performances.

Following this we took a step back in time as the Lothian League seniors took the court in the Quarter Finals of the Chairmens Cup against the Grampian Polis.

With Phoenix legends such as Big Eve, Birley, Les Jacko and Siren joining forces with a group of nippy youngsters the crowd which included the Chief Executive of sportscotland had to feel a little sorry for the Officers of the Law who had made the long trek down south in dreadful conditions.

With the team displaying how basketball was played in the early nineties the bemused coppers were left feeling their pockets had been well and truely picked as Phoenix cruised into the semi-finals.

An excellent start to the year and again a massive thank you to Adriano and Fiona who have put in so much effort over the season to which the whole club is eternally grateful...............

    Gratzi

Phoenix New Season off to a Flyer
September 15, 2008  --   Phoenix Juniors got their season off to a flyer with an excellent 73-52 win through in Cumbernauld against the Lady Gladiators. All the team got on the scoresheet with Scottish Junior internationalists Ali Mitchell and Emelia Rossi leading the way with 21 and 18 points respectively.
(Emelia is not long back from Macedonia where she featured in some outstanding Scottish displays in the Euro B championships.)

The Cadettes and Seniors completed a tremendous away treble with good wins at Perth and Cumbernauld.

This follows some great displays the previous weekend when four of the clubs teams were involved in two pre-season tournaments in Cumbernauld and Edinburgh.
The senior NL team won the St.Maurice open whilst the Cadettes came in third in their age group. Closer to home the Senior Lothian team swept all before them in the Mittie Cup at Meadowbank whilst the fledgling under 14's made it through to final before succumbing to a strong Perth Phoenix before a huge crowd.

All the National League teams face derby matches in their next games against local rivals Kool Kats with the following programe:
    Sun 21 Cadettes @ WHEC - 12.45
    Tue 23 Juniors @ Drummond - 18.20
    Thu 25 Seniors @ Drumond - 19.45

Following their success at the Mittie Tournament the Lothian Seniors get their league campaign started with an away game against Newbattle Blues on Wednesday 24th September. This is a new look side from last season and the club is delighted to welcome back some "old faces" that include former Scottish Internationalists Les Jackson, Elise Lovell. Ali Paton and Lorraine Durie.

The Website is still awaiting fixtures and reports for NL Seniors and Cadettes

    Phoenix Basketball Needs YOU!!
November 2, 2007  --   Polonia Phoenix is a community basketball club offering a wide range of basketball and social opportunities for young females that rely entirely on volunteers to carry out its programme.

All our current coaches and committee members offer their services on a voluntary basis incurring considerable personal cost to fulfil a variety of roles to ensure the smooth running of the club.

It costs approximately £5000 per year to operate the youth section of the club and this is kept low due to the following:

    - Extremely favourable rates for facility hire negotiated with local schools

    - Well qualified coaching staff offering services for free

    - A few dedicated committee members giving up a lot of volunteer time.

    - Past success in accessing grant funding (this is very liable to end)

For a fairly low annual membership fee (£50 to £120) youth members are currently offered:

    - Regular practice sessions (one to three times per week) supervised by experienced qualified coaches from August to June
    - Opportunities to play regular competitive basketball at either local or national level that includes all officials expenses, entry fees, facility and equipment costs
    - Transport to games all over Scotland
    - Registration and insurance with basketballscotland
    - Opportunities for young players to develop in officiating and coaching roles
    - Encouraged to develop through regional and national squads
    - Club t-shirt
    - Limited social activities

To continue and improve this service the club are requesting that all
parents consider becoming involved on a volunteer basis.
(The more volunteers involved the less reponsibility for everyone!)

The club is aware that many parents are a little unsure of the roles required to operate a successful Community Sports Club and although not exclusive, the following are the type of roles that could be carried out by parents and friends:

    Team Managers
Assist team coaches in a range of non technical areas including:
    - arranging fixtures and venues
    - organising and cleaning playing kits
    - collecting players membership fees
    - ensuring consent, registration forms etc are completed
    - ensuring first aid equipment is replenished
    - supervising players during games and training
    - liaising with Child Protection Officer

    Fundraisers
Raise funds by organising a range of activities that could include:
    - Raffles
    - Race Nights
    - Bag Packing
    - Lottery Bonus ball/100 clubs
    - Car Boot sales
    - Quiz Nights

    Social Organisers
Develop and implement a varied social calendar that could include: 10 pin bowling, discos, player of the year awards, BBQ’s, internal fun tournaments, club trips etc

    Transport coordinators
Arrange transport to away games and competitions

    Table officials
    - Assist score and time games
    - The club would arrange attendance on appropriate course

    Funding Sourcers
    - Identify, pursue and develop sponsors for all areas of the clubs programme
    - Identify, apply and monitor funding opportunities

This is not an exhaustive list and any other offers of assistance and expertise are more than welcome.

Remember the more you put into this the more your child and the local community will benefit.

For more information please contact any of our coaches or a member of the committee at club games or training nights

    Phoenix News Update
November 1, 2007  --   Greetings and welcome to a new season at Polonia Phoenix Basketball.

Apologies for the lack of information on the website and by email but as you are probably aware your humble webmaster has not been involved with many club activities this season so has had little information to post.
However, there is plenty going on and the club is delighted to welcome back all the players and coaches from previous seasons and the many new players who have joined at all age groups.

Under the new chairmanship of Adriano Rossi and a committed team of coaches and volunteers this could well turn out to be one of the most successful and busiest seasons the club has had to date. Already Fiona Rossi and Alison Edmonds are on duty at all home games makin', bakin' and floggin' a wide range of tasty goodies, and with regular double headers involving the National League teams, helping to create an excellent game day atmosphere at the WHECDome.

    National League Seniors
Following a couple of seasons where the seniors have struggled for numbers it is great to report that several new exciting players have been recruited by the team coached by Lorna Norman.
Four of these players have come from our old rivals Midlothian Saints who unfortunately folded at the end of last season. Back at the turn of the century (how old does that make you all feel) Phoenix and Saints were the dominant teams in Scotland and fought out many a titanic battle over the years and whilst it is always sad to lose a club with a great tradition it will certainly strengthen the Phoenix programme having these experienced players on board.
One ex-Saint, former Scotland captain Pam Donoghue, has finally returned to her roots, where as a very young player, she played in the original Polonia team that became MIM and dominated the Scottish (and British) women's game in the eighties.
After a hesitant start to the season when the new squad lost to city rivals Kool Kats the team have now won four in a row and must be in contention for honours this season.

    National League Juniors (Under 18)
For the first time in over eight years Phoenix have a team back in the National Junior league.
With a young enthusiastic coach in Cathy Mitchell and assisted by Lisa Wilkinson the team have recruited well from Midlothian Sunshine and Dunfermline Reign and alongside some of our last years Lothian Junior champions plus some of our top cadettes are performing well in a very competitive league. Although still to record their first win, several games have been very close and it is only a matter of time before the Juniors chalk up their first victory.

    National League Cadettes (Under 16)
In only their second season game back in the National League, the cadettes (coached by Lorna Norman and assisted by Lisa Wilkinson) are out to improve on their incredible third place last season. Despite emulating the seniors by losing their opening game to last seasons winners Glasgow, the cadettes have also gone on a roll winning their last three games to put them back in contention.

    Lothian League Seniors
Last years' Lothian Cup winners have all returned and got off to a great start to the season winning their first three games to lead the table.

    Lothian Under 16's
The club has entered a team into the Lothian Under 16 league which will give girls on the fringe of the NL Cadettes squad the opportunity to gain some valuable court time and it is hoped this league gets under way before the end of the year.

    Lothian Under 14's
Coach Hazel Wood and her experienced team of coaches report many enthusiastic and gifted young players attending Monday nights sessions and the club also plans to enter this group into the Lothian Under 16. Due to lack of entries, the previously very successful Lothian Under 14 will not be run this year but the club feels this young group will greatly benefit from the experience of playing against their "Big Sisters".

    Lets Talk
Good communication is the key to a successful club and all players, coaches and members are encouraged to send in news items which can be cut and paste onto the website.
Each team have password controlled access to their own information pages so they can update their own fixtures/results, player details, pictures and game reports so all team managers and coaches get in touch with the site if you require a password and get your team info updated!

Thanks to all those you have helped run the club smoothly, especially all the coaches (Lorna Norman, Cathy Mitchell, Lisa Wilkinson, Hazel Wood, Vivienne Milford, Mairhi Chambers, Lorraine Durie, Carol Bremner Lesackson and Leanna's Mum!), the club secretary (Lorraine Durie), senior women's treasurer (Lesley Jackson), youth player's treasurer (Fiona Rossi), child protection officer and treasurer (Ashley Kent), volunteers and helpers (Alison Edmonds, Carol Bremner, Jim Mitchell, Laura MacIntyre and Lynsey Campbell). Most importantly thanks to all the players, who have already made this season so exciting.

    More Volunteers Welcome
As the club begins to expand it is essential we improve our volunteer network, fundraising and social calendar and we attach a document that outlines the clubs potential requirements. We would be most grateful if you could pass this on to your parents, friends and anyone else who may be interested in becoming involved with Phoenix Basketball.

Committee (and anyone else wanting to be involved)
Please note we are having a club committee meeting on Monday 5th November at 6.30 pm in the changing rooms next to the basketball hall in Boroughmuir High School.

Have a great season and good luck you all

    Lets Go Phoenix................

    Cadettes Make National Finals
April 1, 2007  --   Phoenix Cadettes swept aside St Mirren in the semi-final of the RAF Cadette Scottish Cup 64-54 to book a place in the final against big Edinburgh rivals Kool Kats at the Kelvin Hall Area on Saturday 21st April.

This was an outstanding performance as Phoenix led the game from start to finish and is a remarkable achievement for this young side in their first season in the National Cup.

There is tremendous excitement within the club and a 51 seater bus has already been booked to take the team and supporters through to Glasgow.

Further details will be posted on the site later in the week but those wishing to book a place on the bus please contact Susan Worth as soon as possible.

To round off an excellent week the Cadette's big sisters completed their Junior season undefeated, to lift the Lothian League and all credit to this group of young women who have shown great committment over the season and have been a fun group to work with.

Cadettes secure 3rd Spot in NL
March 26, 2007  --   Phoenix Cadettes completed their league programme with a tremendous 45-31 victory over close city rivals Kool Kats that guaranteed them third place in the National League.
This is a tremendous achievement in their first season back at this level and full credit must go to all the girls on their temendous committment and enthusiasm.

All eyes now turn to the Scottish Cup as Phoenix face last years runners up St Mirren in the semi-finals for a place in the Nationa Finals at Kelvin Hall on 21st April.

This game takes place at WHEC this Saturday 31st March - tipping off at 12.20pm and all players and famly are welcome to attend.

The final round of games in the Lothian season takes place this Sunday 1st April with both Cadettes and Juniors in action.

First up at 10.00am are the Cadettes who are guaranteed runner up place in the league but will be trying to pip the Champions elect Wildcats in their final game.

At 12.30 the Juniors take to the court attempting to complete their season unbeaten against Dunfermline Reign.

Regardless of the result, the Juniors will be crowned League winners at the end of the game...
    - congratulations to both squads who have been great fun to work with all season.

    Juniors Head for Glory
March 21, 2006  --   Phoenix Juniors kept there unbeaten run going in the Lothian League with a fine 53-33 win over an experienced Kool Kats side.
Midlothian Sunshine disappointingly failed to show which virtually guarantees the girls top spot with only one game of the season to go.

The Lothian Cadettes were granted a 20-0 win over Kool Kats who were unable to field a team but went down in a tough friendly as Kats played a few uneligible players.
(Full Results and scorers on Results page)

This Sunday 23rd March brings the rematch against Kool Kats in the Cadette National League following Phoenix's nail biting one point victory at Portobello last month.
This is the last game of the NL League season and victory for either team secures third spot in the league.

The game is at WHEC and tips off at 2.45pm and all players, friends and family are encouraged to get behind the team.

    Home Draw for Cadettes
March 13, 2007  --   Phoenix Cadettes have been drawn at home against last year's finalists St Mirren in the Semi-Final of the RAF Scottish Cup.

The game will be played at WHEC on Saturday 31st March and gives the Cadettes their first opportunity of reaching the National Final for over fifteen years.

Tip off is at 12.20pm and it is hoped a huge crowd will turn out for the cadettes biggest game of the season.

This is part of an exciting double header which is followed by the big city derby when Boroughmir take on Edinburgh Kings in the mens senior Scottish Cup Semi-Finals.

    Club Development Meeting
March 2, 2007  --   Phoenix is attempting to plan it's programme for next season and beyond and National League senior secretary Lorraine Durie has arranged a meeting on Wednesday 28th March at the Lady Nairn Hotel, Willowbrae Hotel from 7.00 to 9.00pm.

Our programme has grown considerably over the past few season's and for this to continue more volunteers are urgently required to carry out a wide range of activities.

These roles include chairperson, coaches, assistant coaches, team secretaries, administrators, fundraisers/social organisers etc.

The club has funding to qualify individuals as coaches/firstaiders etc as well as supporting volunteers on child protection courses etc

Any players, parents or other interested parties wishing to be involved in the future running of the club are welcome to attend.

    Items for discussion include:

    1. Create an active committee
    - urgently require a pro-active chairperson to lead this process.

    2. What teams are we running next year?
    - ideally each team would have a head coach, assistant coach and secretary to share the responsibilities.

    3. Who is committed to coaching?
    - club would fund new coaches qualifications and could look at introducing a mentoring system for young and inexperienced coaches.

    4. Communication between players, coaches, parents, teams
    - greatly improve communications and create stronger pathways of opportunity particularly for younger players.

    5. Polices and procedures
    - many of these are currently available on the website but require ratification and further input.

    6. Social events / fundraising / sponsorship
The club has a membership of almost 100 aged from 10 to 50+ and an active social/fundraising programme is essential to sustain long term develop.

Additional ideas are more than welcome and all those wishing to attend please contact the site.

    Weekend of Mixed Fortunes
March 10, 2007  --   Phoenix's younger players had a hectic weekend that ended with a mixed bag of results but hopefully an enjoyable time was had by all.
On Saturday the club had arranged a couple of challenge maches at WHEC against West Lothian.

First up, the club fielded a very young team made of several P7's, S1's and a few S2's against the Weavers team who had ran our Under 14's close in the league race this season. The youngsters got off to a great start taking an early eight point lead before finally losing out 33-42 to their more experienced opponents.
There was some excellent performances with most players making it onto the scoresheet - Grace 8pts, Claire 7, Nikky 6, Laura 5, Leanna 3, Lena 2 and Helen 2.

In the second game a Phoenix Under 15 side found the going pretty tough against a much improved Wolves team who led 8-6 at the end of the first quarter. The introduction of Hilary Wood sparked the team into actopn in the second quarter and Phoenix eventually ran out 59-35 winners.
Scorers: Charlotte Gannon 23, Hilary Wood 8, Amy Kirkhouse 8, Megan Forde 7, Anna Wenham 6, Sarah Murphy 5, Rebecca Harrison 2

A massive thanks to several girls from the Cadette & Junior teams who scored and refereed the games - Ellen Grant, Claire Edmonds, Eilis & Erin Barnes, Emelia Rossi and Merry McIntosh.

On the Sunday the Under 16's were back in Lothian League action at Meadowbank against the previous day's opponents West Lothian Wolves.
The Wolves were obviously encouraged by their good performance and made Phoenix fight all the way until midway through the last quarter when the Polonia girls eased away to a 50-29 victory which was a lot closer than the final result showed.

In the second game of the day the girls were unable to tame the Wildcats and succumbed to a 33-61 loss.

Next weekend all the Phoenix youth teams are in action with the following programme:
    Sat 17th Mar:
NL Cadettes v St Mirren at Johnstone HS - 12.15pm
    Sun 18th Mar:
Lothian Cadettes v Kool Kats at Meadowbank - 10.00am
Lothian Juniors v Kol Kats at Meadowbank - 12.30am
Lothian Juniors v Sunshine at Meadowbank - 2.30pm

March 5, 2007  --   Phoenix's Under 14 team clinced the Lothian U14 title for the second year in a row with two convincing wins over Kool Kats and West Lothian on Satuday at Craigmount.
There is a tremendous spirit in this group of talented youngsters and the improvement in their team play over the season is a credit to their hard work and committment plus the excellent efforts of coaches Hazel Wood and Viv Milford.

In the first game Kool Kats were unable to match Phoenix's quick fast breaking game and succumbed 55-17 and in the second game against West Lothian Weavers the team's tremendous defensive intensity restricted their closest rivals to a miserly 11 points to triumph 39-11.

The twelve players in the squad will all receive their winners medals this Saturday 10th March during the games at Wester Hailes and congratulations to the following who all played a minimum of three games:
Hilary Wood, Anna Wenham, Amy Kirkhouse, Megan Forde, Sarah Murphy, Grace Ellis, Claire Paxton, Rebecca Harrison, Elizabeth Hunter, Fiona McLachlin, Laura Kirkhouse, and Nikky Forde.

The NL Cadettes came so close to toppling league leaders Glasgow City on Sunday as they travelled through to Eastbank to be pipped by a single point 44-45!!!

The Juniors kept their championship hopes alive in the Lothian Under 18 league with a 78-50 win over Dunfermline Reign but confusion remains over their second game against Midlothian Sunshine.
With just over three minutes to go and Phoenix leading 53-40 a Sunshine player went down with a mystery breathing problem and when finally she had to be taken for medical care the game was then abandoned.
Not sure if this result will stand or be replayed at a later date.

Both Phoenix Cadette teams were in action on the final weekend of 2006 and each team performed well.

On Saturday the NL squad produced possibly their best performance of the season in running the League leaders Glasgow City all the way before succumbing to a 57-71 defeat.

On Sunday the Lothian team got back on winning ways with a solid 50-27 win over Kool Kats despite having only six players available of which five were under 14.

All the teams now get a well earned rest over the Christmas break with the NL Cadettes first in action early in 2007 in an away fixture against Falkirk Fury on Saturday 6th Saturday.

    Mixed Fortunes
December 11, 2006  --   Following the busiest weekend of the season with all Phoenix youth teams in action the final scoreboard read: Phoenix 3 Opponents 2

First in action on Saturday where the Under 14's who succesfully held off the challenge by East Lothian Peregrines before succumbing to a very tall West Lothian side in a hard fought encounter.

In the cadettes double header against Wildcats the National League side scored a convincing win on Saturday but the Wildcats turned the tables in the Lothian league fixture on Sunday.

In the final game of the weekend marathon the Juniors had a comfortable win over Dunfermline Reign which saw Eilis Barnes hit an incredible 39 points against her home town team which is probably a club record.

With the festive season fast approaching next weekend sees the final games of the year with both cadette teams in action.

On Saturday at WHEC the NL side face the table toping Glasgow City in a game which tips off at 2.45 and on Sunday the Lothian League squad take on Kool Kats at Meadowbank with a 10.00am tip.

    Phoenix Youth Treble
December 2, 2006  --   Phoenix youth teams won all three of the games they were involved in over the weekend.
First up on the Saturday where the NL Cadettes who entertained the most travelled team in the league Grampian Flyers.
The young Flyers team were no match for the Polonia team missing power forward Ali Mitchell with a wrist injury.
Coach Norman was able to give all her younger bench players plenty court time as the home side cruised to a 103-21 win.
On the downside both Erin Barnes and Jenny Boyd picked up injuries to join Ali on the bench.

On Sunday the local league teams took to the court with the Under 16's picking up a comfortable 101-35 win over an inexperienced West Lothian Wolves side coached by ex-Phoenix coach and Livi Fan John Robertson.

In the final game of the weekend the Juniors beat Midlothian Sunshine 60-42 in a game which was much tougher than the scoreline suggested.
Sunshine started the game with only five players which included the injured Ali Mitchell who was playing for her "hometown" club and caused Phoenix several early problems despite using only her "weak" right hand.

Sunshine led all the way through to the start of the last quarter when fatigue and an injury reducing them to only four players allowed Phoenix the opportunity to pull away for a somewhat fortunate victory.

    Youths make representative Squads
November 27, 2006  --   Over the last few weeks several Phoenix girls involved in the club's youth programme have been selected for both regional and national representative squads.

This is a tremendous achievement and a great reward for all the hard work the girls have put in this season.

    Congratulations to the following:

    Scotland Under 16's
Ellen Grant, Alison Mitchell, Emilia Rossi & Nicole Worth

    Scotland Under 14's
Niamh Barnes, Jenny Boyd, Kendall Stewart & Hilary Wood.

    Edinburgh Under 14's
Jenny Boyd, Fiona Bruce, Grace Ellis, Megan Forde, Rebecca Harrison, Amy Kirkhouse, Sarah Murphy, Kendall Stewart, Anna Wenham and Hilary Wood.

    Edinburgh Primary
    Laura Kirkhouse & Nicky Forde

November 25, 2006  --   For the first time this season Phoenix arranged a double header against league comers St Maurice Gladiators through at an impressive new court in Cumbernauld.

First up were Phoenix Under 14's who performed extremely well against a Gladiators side who were a mixture of National League bench players plus a few Primary seven and S1's.
With point guard Hilary Wood (for the first time in her career bigger than several of the opposition) controlling the back court and leading the scoring with 17 points the team proved too strong for the home side easing to a comfortable 47-14 win.
All credit to the young Gladiators who fought hard to the end and provided a great experience for the Phoenix girls who were playing their first ever game outside Edinburgh.
Other scorers were Anna Wenham 8, Beth Hunter, Elle Gannon & Helen Horne 6pts each and Megan Forde 4

Following on the Cadettes met in a National League encounter with Phoenix coming away with 56-24 win which was a far tougher game than the result suggests.
Phoenix struggled in the first half to penetrate the Gladiators zone defence and it was only in the last quarter that victory was finally assured against a much improved St Maurice team.

    Mixed Results v Kats
November 19, 2006  --   Phoenix NL Cadettes lost their first ever back to back games when the went down 47-59 to city rivals at Portobello last Saturday.
This was a disappointing result for the girls who were unable to match the Kats initial intensity and were always chasing the game.

Some pride was restored at Meadowbank the following day when the Lothian Cadette and Junior central venue leagues finally got underway for the season.
By coincidence both teams faced Kool Kats again and in the Junior encounter eased through 75-25 before cruising to a 69-17 win in the cadette match.

One very encouraging aspect was that all twenty girls playing in the two games got their names on the scoresheet with several 12 and 13 year olds featuring strongly in the cadette game.

    Beaten but Unbowed
November 11, 2006  --   Phoenix Cadettes lost their unbeaten home record today against St Mirren in a tough uncompromising game the visitors won by 80-61.

This was a great improvement from the last time the Polonia girls played the Paisley outfit with Phoenix actually winning two of the four quarters.

The team is now concentrating on next weeks big game at Portobello High School on Saturday 18th November where a win over city rivals Kool Kats could secure third place in the national league before the league split after Christmas.

The team is looking for a big support so all club members and friends are encouraged to get along to the game that tips off at 10.00am

    Phoenix Fireworks
November 4, 2006  --   With Guy Fawkes night fast approaching Phoenix Cadettes produced their own fireworks when they comprehensively beat Falkirk Fury 100-38 at the WhecDome to regain third spot in the National League.
With three of their recognised starters playing up for the senior team it was a very young cadette side with an average age of 13 and a half that took to the court against last year's scottish cup winners.

It was a superb all round display with all players featuring on the scoresheet and it was encouraging to welcome back Erin Barnes who has been out injured for the last five games who celebrated by top scoring with 24 points and 12 steals against her former club.

Next Saturday we entertain St Mirren at WHEC with the girls determined to inprove on our opening day defeat at Linwood.

This game was sponsored by PROTEAM SPORTSWEAR who have been the principal playing kit supplier to all Phoenix youth teams for the past four years and we are delighted to welcome them on board.

Earlier in the day the Under 14's team opened up their season with two crushing wins over city rivals Kool Kats.
The youngsters played an exciting fast break game and it looks like another fun season for this talented group of players as many of them push for places in next year's Cadettes NL squad.

    Glasgow Gloom
October 28, 2006  --   Phoenix's four game winning streak came to an abrupt halt when they suffered a 47-84 defeat against the current unbeaten league leaders Glasgow City.

The first two quarters were very finely balanced with Phoenix actually taking the lead early in the third before tiring and succuming to Glasgow's devastating fast break game.

The girls are back home at WHEC next Saturday against last season's Scottish Cup winners Falkirk Fury and hopefully they can get back into the winning habit in a game that tips off at 2.45pm.

    Match Sponsors: PROTEAM SPORTSWEAR
Proteam have been the principal playing kit supplier to all Phoenix youth teams for the past four years and we are delighted to welcome them on board as match sponsor in the game against Falkirk Fury. The Irish sportwear company offer tremendous value for money, excellent service and supply a wide range of basketball kits and equipment

    Cadettes Go Ton-up Again
October 21, 2006  --   Phoenix Cadettes hit over a hundred points for the second week in a row when they overpowered a plucky Widcats team 108 - 27 at WHEC today.

Wildcats had only seven players available due to holiday committments but the young Edinburgh side fought hard through to the end although they had no answer to the Polonia scoring threat which saw five players get into double figures.

With the school holidays now over, training is back to normal next week as the Cadettes prepare for their toughest test of the season when they travel through to Eastbank Academy on Saturday 28th October to take on the unbreaten league leaders Glasgow City.

The draw for the Cadette Scottish Cup has now been made and is based on final league positions and will be played at the beginning of March 2007.

    1st Round
    Arbroath Musketeers v 6th Place

    Quarter Finals
    8th Place v 4th Place
    1st Round Winner v 1st Place
    2nd Place v 7th Place
    3rd Place v 5th Place

    - so work that out if you can..........

    Flyers Grounded
October 16, 2006  --   Phoenix proved too strong for a very young Grampian Flyers side when they cruised to a 104-17 victory at the Ellon Sports Centre.

This was a long day for the Polonia faithful with the team and several supporters boarding the bus in Edinburgh at 8.00am to set of up north to the original venue the Gairoch Sports Centre in Inverurie.

Arriving in plenty time the squad enjoyed a frolic in the local playpark before heading to the venue only to be told that the games hall was double booked along with a group of model car enthusiasts!!!

Following several frantic phone calls by Grampian officials, another court further north of Aberdeen in Ellon was secured so the intrepid Polonia party piled back on the bus for another half hour trip to the new venue.

Finally at 2.00pm the game got under way but it was clear from the outset that Phoenix had too much firepower for the Flyers with all players getting plenty court time plus the opportunity to play in a range of positions.

Well done girls and many thanks to the supporters who made the long trip as we look forward to this Saturday's home game against Wildcats at WHEC which tips off at 2.45pm.

    Cadettes Maul St Maurice

Full stats are available under Game Results.

Please note that the return game against St Maurice at Cumbernauld has been rescheduled and will now take place on Saturday 25th November at St Maurice Academy with a 11.30am tip off.

    Cadettes Sting the Kats
September 24, 2006  --   Phoenix Cadettes recorded their first win in the National League with a superb 68-63 victory over city rivals and last years Scottish Champions Kool Kats at Wester Hailes on Saturday afternoon.

With a near capacity crowd roaring on both teams it was a great advert for girls basketball in Edinburgh as Phoenix built up an early lead and then held off a determined Kool Kats challenge to win their first ever cadette NL game in over six years.

This was a brilliant display by all the team and must install a great confidence for the rest of the season.

The Cadettes host fellow league newcomers St Maurice at WHEC this Saturday 30th September tip off 2.45pm and encourage all players, parents and supporters to get along to roar the team on to another win!!!!

    Season Begins This Saturday!
September 11, 2006  --   The National League programme gets underway this weekend with both Seniors and Cadettes heading through to Paisley to play St Mirren at Linwood Sports Centre.

The Cadettes, who are playing their first NL game in six years, are first in action tipping off at 10.45am while their big sisters follow them on court at 12.45pm.

    Cadette Travel Arrangements
Unfortunately we have been unable to acquire a mini bus due to insurance difficulties and will have to rely on parent support to transport the team through.

Initial plans are to meet outside basketballscotland offices, Caledonia House, Redheugh Riggs, South Gyle Estate at 8.30am on Saturday morning and then take the miniumum number of cars and leave the rest in the car park.
(Hopefully we can operate a rotation system throughout the season to share the driving.)

I am aware that the girls from outside Edinburgh may wish to make their own travel arrangements and would ask they arrive at Linwood by 10.00am but please confirm at training on Thursday.

The club still intends to hire a coach for the trip to Inverurie on Sunday 15th October and I would be grateful if all parents/friends wishing to travel with the team could contact Colin prior to Saturday 23rd September so we can confirm the bus size required.

Ellen Grant showed her incredible versatility by performing superbly at point guard, forward and in the post over the weekend while centre Claire Edmonds dominated the boards and came up with twenty points over her two games.
Power forward Emelia Rossi was Scotland's top scorer over the weekend with an average of twenty-one points per game during her two outstanding performances.

Good luck to you all and may the best team win..........

    Three Phoenix Teams on Top
February 25, 2006  --   What have Phoenix's Lothian Seniors, Under 16's and Under 14's all got in common?

    1. They have each only lost one game this season.

    2. They are all top of their respective leagues.

The seniors finally lost their unbeaten record through in Grangemouth but recovered last week with a good home win over Pentland to go 9 and 1 for the season.

The Under 16 cadettes have gone on a great run since their opening day loss to Midlothian Sunshine and are now 7 and 1 and have now taken top spot in the Cadette league.

And final word must go the the incredible Under 14's, many of whom are playing in their first season of basketball, who are 10 and 1 and are well in the lead of the Under 14 league.

There is still a long way to go in all of these competitions and with most teams gunning for a "Phoenix Scalp" it will be tough to continue this winning streak but everyone in the club is rooting for all the teams.

    LET'S GO PHOENIX..............

    Claire Joins Emelia & Ellen
February 17, 2006  --   Congratulations to Claire Edmonds who has been called up to the Scotland Under 14 Squad making the Phoenix compliment an incredible three as she joins up with club mates Ellen Grant and Emelia Rossi.

Claire has worked tremendously hard at her game over the last couple of months and thoroughly deserves this recognition.

This is a great incentive for all the young players at the club to step up their game and strive to get into representative squads.

Folow the fortunes of the girls on their own website

    Cadettes Stay on Top
February 19, 2006  --   Phoenix Cadettes have now chalked up seven wins in a row since their opening day defeat to Midlothian Sunshine.

In the latest round of games they had a brilliant 46-24 win over close challengers Kool Kats followed up by an excellent 51-28 victory against Dunfermline Reign.

With other challengers Wildcats losing against Sunshine, Phoenix are now sitting clear at the top of the Under 16 League table.

Full report and scorers can be found under "Game Results"

Phoenix Youth teams On a Role!
February 5, 2006  --   Phoenix's Under 14 and 16 teams had another succesfull weekend when both teams chalked up four superb wins between them.

First up on Saturday were the 14's who completed the double over Kool Kats with a 29-23 win before beating the Physical Peregrines 25-21 to gain revenge on their only loss of the season so far.
This takes them to the the top of league with a 7-1 record followed by Kool Kats on 5-3 and Peregrines on 5-4.

Not to be outdone by their wee sisters, the 16's also completed the double over Wildcats by winning 35-18 and reversed their only defeat of the season by overturning Midlothian Sunshine 38-20 to take top spot in the Cadette league.

Great job by both teams to round off a most excellent weekend that also sees all three Edinburgh football teams still in the later stages of the Scottish Cup!!!

Full report and scorers of all these games can be found under "Game Results"

    Way to go PHOENIX..........

Winning weekend for all Phoenix Teams
January 15, 2005  --   Phoenix had a great start to 2006 when all teams won their opening matches as the club went 4 and 0.

First up on Saturday were the Under 14's who comfortably beat the young Liberton Lynx team in their first game before taking on a strong Boroughmuir team.
The first half was real end to end stuff with the lead regularly changing hands but with the 14's playing some of their toughest ever defence they shut out the 'muir offensive threat and recorded a superb 28-15 victory.

Later on in the day, their big National League sisters travelled through to Paisley and recorded a good 76-60 away win over KR Saints that will hopefully kick start their season for a good Scottish Cup run.

Finally on Sunday, the young Cadette team overcame a much older Dunfermline Reign side with an excellent 62-36 win that will give them all tremendous confidence for the remainder of the season.

Full reports of all the youth games can be found under "game results"

    Track Suits - Junior/Cadettes
    Logos
December 22, 2005  --   The long running saga of ordering track suits for the Junior and Cadettes continues. To date there has been exactly £583 raised and the choice appears to have been narrowed down to either the Prostar Pacific or Michigan.

Track suit costs including your name printed on back and club name/logo embroidered on front are:

    a) Prostar Pacific: £41 (Poly/Tactel outer shell with Poly/Cotton lining.
    b) Prostar Michegan : £49 (320 denier textured nylon showerproof)

Attached are some options for a logo but it also possible for the company to use a standard logo with a basketball and the club name printed round it. This is the cheaper option as to produce our own logo would mean an additional £50 to £70 cost over and above the initial track suit price.

Please go on to the Questionaire page and send me your favoured option and the majority decision will be final.

    It's your call!

    Colin

National League Opening Game 17th Sept.
September 2, 2005  --   The National League team face a local derby against city rivals Kool Kats on Saturday 17th September in their first game of the season at Portobello High School - tip off 3.00pm.

The squad has now been training for a few weeks in preparation for the season and are delighted to announce that one of the strongest squads for years has been assembled over the summer.

Returning from last season are guards Lyndsay Campbell and Elise Lovell, forward Shirley Campbell and centres Les Jackson, Ali Paton and Julie Ritchie.

Added to this line up are six extremely talented players of which three are full Scottish internationalists.

At guard forward sees the return of Claire Watson (nee Mollison) who started off her career with Phoenix as a junior before transferring to the States and earning a scholarship to the highly rated NCAA 1 college at UNC Charlotte in North Carolina. Claire has the ability to become one of the most influential players in the country and is a natural court leader.

Another guard forward is the lightning quick Louise Donaldson who joins us from the now defunct Dunfermline Reign and will add tremendous pace and scoring threat to the back court.

At point guard is the experienced Lorraine Durie who had a previous spell with the club five years ago and also returns from Dunfermline.

Moving across the city from rivals Kool Kats is power forward Gillian Bailey who will add considerable strength inside.

In addition to the four local girls the club is also delighted to welcome two players new to Scottish basketball in Joanne Riordan and Gabriella Wilhborg.

Joanne joins us from the Irish National League club Portlaoise Pacers and at shooting forward brings a typical upbeat Irish game with a great shot.

Swedish born Gabriella has previous playing experience in her native country with Malmo, Lobas and Trellbourg and will add a significant inside presence with her tall, athletic style.

The team has also been strengthened on the coaching side with former
Scottish Internationalist and MIM player Lorna Norman being recruited to work alongside Stewart Harris.
Lorna has been playing and coaching in England for fifteen years and will bring a wealth of experience to the coaching staff.

All the teams performed well and your attitude and sportsmanlike behaviour is a credit to your schools and families.

    Under 14's
The club decided to enter two teams into this competition to give as many playing opportunities as possible and both teams performed extremely well.
There is a tremendous team spirit within this group of young players that bodes well for the future and many of them are already challenging for positions in the Cadette squad.

    Juniors (Under 18)
This is a strong exciting group of players who won 10 out of their 12 games and secured runner-up spot in the Lothian Junior League.
Ciara Barnes who led the team in scoring was deservedly voted the junior leagues Most Valuable Player

On a sadder note the team will be losing three players from this group, Gillian Renilson (Robert Gordons Aberdeen) and Catriona Bissett, (St Andrews) are both off to university whilst Romy Hricova is returning to her native Austria this summer. The club would like to thank them for their committment over the past few years and wish them well in the future.

    Cadettes (Under 16)
Last but not least, are the all-conquering Cadettes who completed the season undeafeted and are this seasons Lothian Cadette Champions.
This was a brilliant all round team performance superbly led by team captain Eilis Barnes who completed a family double by lifting the Cadette MVP award

Fourteen girls have played in the team, including six under 14's and will each receive a medal for heir efforts.
These are Eilis Barnes (captain), Catherine Falconer, Rachael Furness, Carol Silviera, Mary Melville, Seona Paxton, Megan Grant, Rebecca Watson, Sally Watson, Ellen Grant, Erin Barnes, Katie Boyd, Naimh Barnes and Meredith McIntosh.

What kind of Player are You?
November 22, 2004  --   Larry Tidwell is the Associate Head Coach of the Texas Christian University Women's Basketball programe who are ranked among the top twenty female teams in the American NCAA.

In May 2004, Coach Tidwell visited Edinburgh to run several player and coach development camps and has maintained a keen interest in Scottish Basketball and is always willing to share his insight into the game.

"Team Chemistry is a major factor that will determine if you win or lose on the court or succeed or fail in other aspects of life.

All great teams have wonderful team chemistry. A great team has a
“perfect” blend or mixture of all the roles involved with a team.

    “The Difference”
Probably the most physically gifted athlete. The team feels confident that this player will come through with her athletic skills for the team.

    “The Winner”
This player believes that her team can win no matter what the score is or what has just happened. This type player is invaluable to a successful team.

    “The Stabilizer”
This player is not the superstar or maybe not the main motivating factor of the team, but this player is a highly effective, low error player. She gets the job done quickly, correctly, and efficiently.
A successful team has many stabilizers on its team. This is a very
important player, yet she may be left out of the spotlight sometimes.

    “The Giver”
This player makes everyone else play well. They find a way to encourage a teammate who has made a mistake or“pump up” the team when their spirits are low. This player is very emotionally aware of each player on the team.

    “The Taker”
This type of player sulks, pouts, clowns around during practice and gives up when an error is made. This type player is harmful to a team and is not an ingredient of a successful team.

Good teams are populated by people who are players. They are motivated by the desire to go have fun playing the game. Motivation is the key factor. A player is an athlete who enjoys the game, but at the same time gives 100% on each play."

WHAT TYPE of PLAYER ARE YOU?
