The Legends/TNP Face Brew Crew in the Chip!
September 14, 2009 --
The 2009 semi-finals began with an exciting overtime match between defending champions Legends/TNP and newcomer Almighty Force. This game was closely contested throughout. Almighty Force held a 24-23 lead at the half. They increased the lead to 7 points in the second half , but were hit with 2 untimely technicals that kept them from making this a route. Add that to some costly missed free throws down the stretch and the score at the end of regulation was 60-60.
The Legends/TNP owned the overtime, outscoring Almighty Force 13-1 to take a 73-61 victory and spot in the championship. Sherron (S-Class) led the Legends and all scorers with 26 points. Shareef Fordham added 13 and Charles Jones contributed 11. Mick led Almighty Force with 17.
In the second semifinal, the Brew Crew defeated the Roadrunners 75-60. The Roadrunners were shorthanded (6 players) and had trouble with the Brew Crew’s depth. The Brew Crew led by 14 at the half and increased that lead to 18 before the Roadrunner made a run to cut the deficit to 9. However, too little, too late.
Benny led Brew Crew with 19 points. The Roadrunners had no answer for his strength in the post. Mark Williams contributed to the Brew Crew’s cause with 13 points. The Roadrunners were led by Rob Stone’s 15.
CONGRATULATIONS to the Roadrunners and Almighty Force for their great efforts, and Good Luck to the Legends/TNP and the Brew Crew in the chip!

ROADRUNNERS GET 2nd WIN!
August 21, 2009 --
The Roadrunners picked up their second win of the season by defeating the Outlaws 84-56. The game was a tight battle for the first 18 minutes, with the lead changing six times. However, the Roadrunners got a lift from a couple of tardy players and led by 12 at the half, 46-34. The second half was all Roadrunners.
The Outlaws did get a good game out of Seon , who was tied for game high honors with 19. Gant led the Roadrunners with 19 also.

WEEK 6 RECAP
August 17, 2009 --
This week saw the league’s only undefeated team drop 2 games against league frontrunners. Carter-Ledyard suffered their first loss on Saturday, falling to the Legends/TNP 57-47. Charles Jones showed flashes of his L.I.U. days scoring 19 points, on an array of difficult shots. Sherron “S-Class” also contributed 19. C. L. was led by Rich Henry and Ed with 14 apiece.
In other games on Saturday, the Outlaws could not follow up on its first Rego Park victory and fell to MOB 67-45. Preston led MOB’s attack with 15 points. Seon led the Outlaws with 16 points.
Prior to that game, MOB and the Brew Crew completed the a suspended game from July 25th. Brew Crew prevailed with a 70-46 victory. The trio of Red, Bone and Bennie scored 14, 15 and 15 respectively. Bucci scored 21 to lead MOB.
Almighty Force returned to its winning ways by defeating LOS 54-43.
Sunday’s games began with a matchup between Brew Crew and Carter-Ledyard in a battle for first place. Both teams were fired up before this game, reminiscent of an old college rivalry ( similar to a Georgetown- St. John’s game from back in the days). And the game lived up to the hype. The Brew Crew prevailed with a 52-48 win. It was a hard fought battle. Both teams had opportunities down the stretch, but the Brew Crew made clutch free throws in the closing minutes and held off Carter-Ledyard. Rich Henry was the only C.L. player to hit double figures, scoring a game high 20 points. Bennie paced B.C. with 14 and Mark Williams added 11. B.C. victory put them in a first place tie with the Legends/TNP.
LOS bounced back from Saturday’s loss with a win over the Roadrunners 59-57. The Roadrunners had this game won, but a couple of crucial mistakes at crunch time cost them. LOS had four players in double figures, led by Phil’s 18 points.

WEEK 4 RECAP
August 3, 2009 --
Carter-Ledyard maintained its hold on first place with a 66-29 victory over Mr.2 U! Ballers. Rich Henry led C.L. with a game high 19 points. Stokes contributed 14 . Mr. was led by James Brown’s 12 points. Mr. managed a 21 point 2nd half but was stymied by an 8 point first half and was never in the game. They have an 0-4 record, but looks to get in the win column next week against the Outlaws who are 0 for Rego Park (0-12).
In what’s becoming a weekly scene, Almighty Force began its game in the hole. This week, the hole was only five points because their opponent, MOB, didn’t have five until five minutes before A. F., thus costing them an additional five points. And MOB could have used every bit of those five points as A. F. prevailed 66-54. Dre and K. P. led A. F. with 21 and 18 points respectively.
Despite Almighty Force’s use of “C. P. Time” instead of real time, they have managed a 4-1 record, good for second place behind Carter-Ledyard (who gave A. F. its only loss). However, they face a big challenge next week versus the Legends/TNP , who are coming off a disappointing loss. This could be a game where “C. P. Time” could really cost this team. The game, originally scheduled for Saturday, is moved to Sunday, at the request of A. F. ( previous commitment). Therefore, there should be no reason for them to be late for this game.
Speaking of “C. P. Time”, the Legends/TNP were guilty of it in there game against there rival, Brew Crew. Brew Crew began the game with a 13-0 advantage and never looked back, winning 53-37. Bone’s 17 paced the Brew Crew. Lack of preparation and frustration did the Legends/TNP in. A technical foul on Charles Jones at the end of the first halve resulted in a 32-8 halftime lead for B. C. Sharief was the lone bright spot for the Legends/TNP, scoring a game-high 21, but no other player managed double figures.
In the day’s finale, LOS blew out the winless Outlaws, 61-32. Phil, Chip and Lynx led a balanced LOS attack with 12,11 and 10 respectively. The Outlaws had no one in double figures.

CARTER-LEDYARD ACCEPTS COMPROMISE!
July 29, 2009 --
Carter-Ledyard, who was saddled with a forfeit Sunday when they weren't at the park to play their game against LOS following a rain delay, accepted a compromise that would remove the forfeit from their record. The game will be rescheduled, at which time Carter-Ledyard would be responsible for both referee fees. The initial forfeit was the result of a miscommunication between team members.
Its a rule in the Rego Park 30 & Over, as it is in most tournaments, that a game is expected to be played until an "official cancellation " is declared by league administration or game officials. Administration will make decisions on cancellations in a timely manner, depending on each individual situation. Teams are responsible for ascertaing whether or not a game is cancelled.

WEEK 3 RECAP
July 27, 2009 --
Week 3 resulted in two games played, one game suspended, two games rained out and one unusual forfeit.
On Saturday, Almighty Force defeated Mr. 2 U! Ballers 73-40 despite the fact the A.F. was late for their start (again) and began the game trailing 9-0. Kenny Parker led A.F. with 20 and Greg James added 15.
The day's second game between MOB and Brew Crew was suspended with 3:47 left in the first half with Brew Crew leading 34-21. The game will be continued on Saturday 8/1. The remaining game for the day were postponed.
Sunday began with Almighty Force showing up late again. This time they had to overcome a 19-0 deficit, but prevailed to defeat the Roadrunner 53-52 in overtime.
Sunday's game was about to start when mother nature called. The forcast called for a passing shower. After ten minutes the rain stopped and the sun was beaming. After another 10 minutes, we were ready to start, the game between LOS and Carter Ledyard, but C.L. had left, even though a couple of their player were told the game would be played. Word to the wise, the game is still on until it is OFFICIALLY CALLED OFF! After turning on the clock for the first half, LOS was awarded the victory when the clock ran out. C.L didn't respond to repeated calls to find out where they were, so it is what it is!

WEEK 2 RECAP
July 19, 2009 --
Week 2 began with the defending champs, Legends/TNP, handing Mr. 2 U! its second lost in two games, 63-41. Mr. 2 U! seemed to play with more togetherness, however, there still seemed to be some tension amongst its members. A post game conference may have resolved any internal problem (we’ll see next week). Last season’s playoff MVP, “S-Class” was the games leading scorer with 23 points for the Legends/TNP. Mr. was led by Daymond Dawson’s 15.
In the days second game, the Brew Crew got into the winning column with a 67-43 victory over the Outlaws. It was an emotional victory for the Crew as its coach and leader, Jay Arrington, was unable to attend after spending the week in the hospital. We all pray that Jay will be healthy enough to return to the sidelines soon. “Red” led the Brew Crew with 21 points, while Mark contributed 18.
Its appears that Carter-Ledyard means business this summer. For the second week in a row, we have not witnessed any dissension from this team. I guess they have realize that this is the approach needed to get to the chip. Too bad its taken 14 years to realize it. Let’s see if this continues. It continued Saturday with a 53-33 win over Almighty Force. Almighty put themselves in a 8-0 hole to start the game, as the game clock was started and they lost a point per minute until they had five players to start the game. We will strictly enforce the forfeit rule this summer, so teams had better get to the park on time. We’ve already moved back out start times so that our club goers have more time to recover before their games. Now its up to the teams to be on the court “dressed and ready to play” at game time. Ed led carter-Ledyard with 18 points.
In the days final game, MOB outlasted LOS 56-55. Avery led the scoring for MOB with 19. Linton paced LOS with 16 followed by Dave Bentham’s 15. LOS had an opportunity to tie the game , however, Dave missed one of two free throws with four seconds left, resulting in the final score.
PLAYER of the WEEK - Mark Williams, Brew Crew

2009 TIP OFF!
July 12, 2009 --
The 2009 Classic kicked off on Saturday and we saw a many old faces on new teams. Defending 2008 regular season champs, Work, didn’t return this summer, however, most their players are on various rosters in 2009. Makes you go, Hmmm!
In the opener, Carter-Ledyard used its experience to upend the Outlaws, 54-34. In what appeared to be a rewind of last year’s opener between these two teams, the Outlaws spent a lot of time complaining to the officials, thus wasting energy and loosing focus. When will guys learn? You have to play the game, regardless off whether you believe you’re getting calls or not. And when you focus on playing and leave the officials alone, you play better. Carter-Ledyard showed a side that we are not used to seeing, they played without arguing amongst themselves. I guess Coach Dwayne Hall, pictured left in a less than happy moment, has his team focused.
The second game was a rematch of the 2008 chip pitting the defending champion Legends/TNP vs MOB. Once again, the Legends/TNP prevailed with a 72-46 victory. The short-handed Legends/TNP were led by the playmaking of Charles “C.J.” Jones and the scoring of Greg “Boo” Harvey (29 Points). MOB didn’t take advantage of the Legends, who only had five players but jumped out to an early lead which they never relinquished. MOB was led by Bucci and Rema who scored 10 points each.
One of the new kids on the block, Almighty Force, outlasted the Brew Crew 67 -56. The game was pretty close throughout but a mental meltdown in the closing minutes may have killed any momentum the Brew Crew may have had to pull this out. Almighty’s Greg James had a game high 18 points. The Brew Crew was led by Benny’s 15.
In the night cap, the other new kids on the block, Mr.2 U! Ballers, fell to LOS 49-32. LOS was led by Chip, returning after missing last summer due to injury, who scored 15. Mr. 2 U! have a pretty talented roster, and can make a good run this summer, but they must get on the same page. It may take a game or two for the players to learn each other, but if they are willing to be patient and work TOGETHER, they can make some noise!
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Greg “Boo” Harvey, Legends/TNP

LEGENDS/TNP WINS 2008 CHAMPIONSHIP!
September 13, 2008 --
The Rego Park 30 & Over Classic crowns a new champion for 2008. The Legends/TNP, after being a bridesmaid for the past two years, returned to the “Throne” by defeating MOB 85-62 in the championship game. The “Cinderella” MOB could not withstand the Legends/TNP depth and relentless pressure.
MOB started the game on a 13-4 run, a result of scrappy defense and long range shooting. The Legends were able to withstand the slow start with a run of their own and closed out the half with a 43-32 lead, thanks to a buzzer beater by Tim Brisco.
The Legends controlled the second half, outscoring MOB 42-30 to win its fifth title in seven years.
MOB, who lived by the jumper, died by the jumper. Missed offensive opportunities led to easy fast break buckets by the experienced Legends team. They also were without Preston, their insprirational leader.
The Legends were led by MVP Sherron “S Class” Brown’s 27 points. Kevin “Plastic Man” Young contributed 17, in an effort that made all senior citizens proud. James “Speedy” Williams added 12 points and inspired play. MOB was led by Bucci’s 19 and Brent’s 14.
Congratulations to both teams on a tremendous tournament!

CHAMPIONSHIP - LEGENDS/TNP vs MOB!
The 2008 championship is scheduled for Saturday September 13 at 1:00pm (Rain date: Sun. 9/14 @ 1pm). The league will be crowning a new champ as the surprising MOB crew, in only their second year in the league, faces the Legends/TNP, who have four titles to their credit.
The Legends/TNP entered this years playoffs as the second seed with a 6-1 record. Their only loss came at the hands of top seeded Work, who also finished 6-1. That led to an anticipated matchup between these two teams for the championship. But something unexpected happened on Work's way to the dance. MOB made plans to crash the party. And so they did!
MOB finished as the fourth seed, but to let them tell it, they are better than that. Playing scrappy defense and hitting timely baskets, MOB survived the first two rounds and find themselves in the "chip". They have taken advantage of teams regarding them lighty. Will the Legends/TNP make the same mistake? Time will tell.

FINAL FOUR - NOW THERE'S TWO
September 7, 2008 --
The semi-finals began with what might be the biggest upset in Rego Park playoff history. MOB, who has been lightly regarded by most, defeated No. 1 seed Work 65-62. And the game was not that close. MOB led at the half 31-25. They increased that lead to 13 points in the second half. Work rallied in the closing minutes to cut the lead to two points, but MOB was able to hold on for the victory as Work’s desperation three missed as time expired.
Preston and Brent paced MOB with 13 points apiece. Work got 14 points from Rich Henry and another 13 from Greg, but it wasn’t enough as MOB advances to the championship game in only their second year in the league.
The other semi saw the Legends/TNP easily defeat Queensbridge 78-63. The Legends led throughout the contest, stretching the lead to 20 at one point. Queensbridge just couldn’t get it going as the Legends applied pressure forcing Queensbridge into turnovers and not letting them get their running game in gear.
Cef led the Legends/TNP with a game high 20 points. B. Walker added 11 and Speedy Williams scored 10 (8 from the free throw line). Queensbridge was led by Reggie Jessie’s 16 points.
The second seeded Legends/TNP will now face an inspired MOB squad for the championship on Saturday at 1pm. The Legends might be favored, but don’t sleep on MOB. If you don’t know, wake up LOS and Work and ask them!

NO THREE-PEAT!
September 5, 2008 --
The final quarterfinal match-up involved the two teams that have won the last six championships. Four-time champion Legends/TNP retooled this year by bringing in some younger legs, fully intent on returning to championship glory. The two-time defending champs Brew Crew, on the other hand, lost some key players and battled internal obstacles that resulted in a seventh place finish. BUT THIS IS THE PLAYOFFS.
The Legends/TNP jumped out to a 13-0 lead (the first 5 coming courtesy of the forfeit rule) against the undermanned Brew Crew. They held on take a ten point lead into halftime. However, the Brew Crew was not going out without a fight and battled back in the second half to make it interesting. How interesting? The score was 59-59 with 47 seconds left in the game. Charles Jones responded with a three and the Legends/TNP added a free throw to give them a 63-59 victory and a spot in the semis where they will face Queensbridge.

WORK SURVIVES A SCARE!
September 2, 2008 --
Work survived a scare! Looking to pull the biggest upset in league history, the winless Outlaws took Work to the brink of elimination before falling 51-45 in a quarter final game. Work was surprised to see the score tied 30-30 at the end of the half. Seon kept the Outlaws in the game with nine of his 11 points in the half. Work found things just a tough in the second, as they fell behind by five early. They battled back to take the lead, but found themselves tied with just 1:45 to go. Key baskets by Rich Henry (14 points) and Chuck (5 points) pushed Work into the lead and they held on to win by six.
Work will now meet MOB in the semis on Saturday. After today's showing, this now seems like a very interesting match-up.

QUEENSBRIDGE & MOB ADVANCE
August 30, 2008 --
The 2008 playoffs began with two quarter-final games on Saturday. In the opener, Queensbridge outlasted an undermanned Carter-Ledyard squad 60-48. CL only had six players and ran out of gas on this humid afternoon. The Bridge was led by Troy Battle’s (left, with ball) 19 and Reggie Jessie’s 14. They now advance to play the winner of the Legends-TNP/Brew Crew match-up.
In the second game, MOB held off LOS 62-60. LOS had an opportunity to win or send the game into overtime, but missed three attempts as the clock ran out. Brent led MOB with a game high 19. MOB moves on to face the winner of the Work/Outlaws game
|
PLAYOFFS!
The quarter finals begin with top seed Work against the Outlaws at 11:00am followed by Queensbridge vs Carter-Ledyard at 12:30pm. In the other quarter final games, The Legends/TNP faces Brew Crew (a rematch of last year’s championship) at 2:00pm, followed at 3:30 by LOS vs MOB. The winners will meet Saturday, 9/6 at 11:00am & 12:30pm for a place in the chip.
The championship is scheduled for Sunday Sept. 7th at 1:00pm.

WEEK 6 RECAP
The final weekend of regular play determined the playoff seedings, which would have he start of the tournament. It began with Work defeating the Outlaws 71-53, and claiming first place and the number 1 seed. Gant led Work’s scoring with 30 points. Greg, Rob and Chuck chipped in with 12 apiece. Seon led the Outlaws with 14 points.
The Brew Crew was unable to build on its win in its previous game and fell to third seed Queensbridge 51-38. Queensbridge’s (and St. John’s alum) Reggie Jessie led all scorers with 25. Brew Crew failed to have a player in double figures.
The Legends/TNP handed the Outlaws their second loss of the day with a 76-59 victory. Kevin Young paced the Legends with 15, followed by B. Walker’s 13. They then completed an abbreviated double-header by defeating MOB 78-59 in the completion of a suspended game. The victory wrapped up the second seed for the Legends/TNP.
LOS defeated Carter-Ledyard 47-33. Although LOS, MOB and Carter-Ledyard all finished with 3-4 records, the loss dropped Carter-Ledyard to the 6th seed, as a result of the tie-breaker rules. LOS finishes 5th.
The Outlaws made up two games during the week, losing both. However, they gave Queensbridge a tough battle on Tuesday before losing 42-39. On Wednesday, in the battle of cellar dwellers, Brew Crew defeated the Outlaws 62-51. The Outlaws went winless for the season, however, they showed a lot of fire and effort in their last three games which can be a springboard for the playoffs

IN THE NEWS
August 13, 2008 --
The New York Daily News covered this past weekend's action. The article can be found in the Queens Sports section of the August 12th edition. We'd like to thank the Daily News for their efforts in putting together a fine article.
The article captured the rivalries, the intensity, and the stories behind the Rego Park 30 & Over Summer Classic as it embarks on its thirteenth year

WEEK 5 RECAP
August 11, 2008 --
The weekend kicked off with the game of the summer (so far). MOB and Carter-Ledyard battled through three (3) overtimes before a winner was determined. Carter-Ledyard barely outlasted MOB by the score of 78-77. C.L.’s Dwayne Hall, one of Rego Park’s originals, sent the game into the third overtime with a flashback move with 1 second left on the clock. That move may have put Dwayne on the DL for the remainder of the season ( if his new bride doesn’t). Carter-Ledyard was led by Nigel’s 16 and TD’s 15. MOB’s Brent continued his torrid scoring with 23. Bucci chipped in with 15 in the losing cause.
In other games on Saturday, LOS defeated the Outlaws, 71-43. LOS was led in scoring by Marvin and John with 18 and 16 respectively. The Outlaws are still winless, however they still have four games left and can finish above .500.
In a hard fought battle, the Legends/TNP prevailed over Queensbridge 45-41. The Legends/TNP remains undefeated.
The Brew Crew’s struggles continued as they fell to Work 70-55. Gant led Work with 19 points. Howie Hudson also had 19 to lead the Brew Crew. The Brew Crew remains winless.
In Sunday’s matchups, Carter-Ledyard fell to Queensbridge 50-43. Although C.L. played well, the 3 OT game the day before may have taken a toll on them. Killz led the Bridge with 15 points.
The Brew Crew got its first win of the summer by defeating LOS 48-39. Mark’s 16 led BC, who were finally able to smile after a game. LOS fell to 3-3 for the summer.
Work handed the Legend/TNP their first loss 56-47. The game was physical throughout resulting in a number of technical fouls. It will be interesting if these two teams meet in the playoffs. Gant led Work with 13 and Kevin Young had 14 for the Legends/TNP.
* PHOTO- Mark scores 2 of his 16 points to help put Brew Crew in the win column for the 1st time this summer.

WEEK 4 RECAP
August 3, 2008 --
Bad weather washed out three of the four games scheduled for Saturday. In the days only game, MOB easily handled the Outlaws 84-71. It was the beginning of what turned out to be a very successful weekend for MOB. Brent led MOB in scoring with 30 points, followed by Bucci’s 20. Seon paced the Outlaws with 30 points.
MOB returned on Sunday and posted what may be the biggest upset of the summer by handing two-time defending champion, Brew Crew its third straight loss 89-87. The Brew Crew had a double didget lead with a little more than four minutes to go. MOB gradually clawed its way back to tie the game. Brew Crew had a number of opportunities, but missed a couple of chippies and could never regain the lead. MOB scoring was led once again by Brent, who scored 23. Preston and Chuck scored 16 apiece. Bucci added 14 for MOB. Al led the Brew Crew with 18 points.
For the second game in a row, pre-season favorite Carter-Ledyard loss after the “Mercy” rule was applied. Work made easy work of C.L. winning 67-45 behind Gant’s 16. Former Carter-Ledyard member, Rich Henry contributed 14 points.
The Legends/TNP continued to look strong by defeating LOS 58-49. The undefeated Legend were led by Kevin Young and B. Walker with 13 and 11 points respectively.
LOS had only one player in double figures as Marvin scored 19 in the losing cause.

WEEK 3 RECAP
July 26, 2008 --
Week 3 was cut short due to inclimate weather, however, Saturday provided three games that may be an indication of "who to watch" come playoff time.
The Legends/TNP remained undefeated with a convincing win over Carter-Ledyard 62-39. The Legends/TNP took a 10 point halftime lead and didn't look back. Kevin Young and Speedy Williams led a balanced attack with 11 points apiece. Carter-Ledyard's sleepwalking offense was led by Ed's 13 points.
Work improved to 2-1 by disposing of LOS 73-60. Panama led LOS with 17 points, but LOS had no answer for Rich Henry, who dropped in 24. Robbie also contributed to Work's cause by netting 17. The victory leads to what should be an interesting matchup next week against the Legends/TNP. Work has the leagues top offense, averaging 71 ppg while the Legends/TNP has one of the league's deepest roster.
In the game of the day, Queensbridge held of MOB 61-60. The Bridge held a 14 point lead at the half. However, we have said time and again, you better not sleep on MOB. MOB chipped away at Queensbridge's lead, outscoring them 45-32 in the second. MOB missed 11 free throws in the game (9 in the 2nd half), which undoubtedly affected the outcome. There is a reason its called the "Charity Line".

WEEK 2 RECAP
July 19, 2008 --
Week two was highlighted by four closely contested matches. In the opener, Carter-Ledyard used experience and savvy to outlast The Outaws 52-48. The Outlaws, playing for the first time in the league, let Carter-Ledyard's "old-school" play frustrate them in crucial moments. They couldn't adjust to CL's vocal attack, leading to untimely turnovers and loss of focus. CL was led by Ed's 18. Lamont, making his return after a couple of years, chipped in with 11. Spider led the Outlaws with 17.
In the second game of the day, Queensbridge bounced back from last week's loss by defeating Work 66-61. Ktrice led the Bridge with 19 points. Work was led by Chuck's 15.
MOB defeated LOS in the day's third game 50-45. MOB had a balanced attack with Brent leading the way with 15, followed by Bucci's 13. It appears that MOB wants to prove to everyone that they are to be taken serious.
In the marque matchup, two time defending champs Brew Crew, fell for the second consecutive week by losing to four time champs, the Legends/TNP 56-46. It seemed as though the Brew Crew could not get a flow going without their floor leader A.J.. The Legends/TNP applied constant pressure, leading to numerous turnovers and easy layups. Cef led the Legends scoring with 15 points, followed by former L.I.U. standout, Charles Jones, who chipped in with 11. The Brew Crew was led by Benny's 15 points. In a surprise developement, long-time Legend player Howie Hudson suited up for the Brew Crew. Let's not read anything into that!

The Rego Park 30 & Over Basketball Classic is sad to announce the passing of Ernesto Pond, a respected basketball official who has officiated in our tournament the past few years. Ernesto is well known in the Pro-Am circuit. Not only has he been a respected official, Ernesto has helped develope and train many up-and-coming officials. We would like to extend our condolences to his family and friends. He will be sorely missed!

TIP-OFF WEEKEND 2008
July 13, 2008 --
The 2008 tournament kicked off with 2 games today. In the opener, Work defeated 2007's surprise team M.O.B. 79-60. "V" led Work's attack with 26 points. Stokes and "Skeeter" chipped in with 19 and 13 respectively. M.O.B. continued their scrappy play they became known for, but it wasn't enough. Bucci led M.O.B. with 19 points, while Chuck added 15.
In the second game, Carter-Ledyard and the defending champs Brew Crew battled to the wire before C.L. prevailed 61-58. Troy and T.D. led C.L.'s balanced attack with 12 points apeice. UMASS alum A.J. was Breww Crew's leading scorer with 23, shooting 9 for 10 from the charity stripe. Last season, the Brew Crew lost it's first game before going undefeated the rest of the way to win the chip. Will this year be a repeat performance? Time will tell!
In Sunday's game, LOS defeated Queensbridge 48-43. Queensbridge arrived late and under the forfeit rules, the game clock started and ran 10 minutes, awarding LOS 10 points to start. However, they forfeited those points because when Queensbridge was ready, one of LOS's five players wasn't dressed and ready to play (he had to go to his car to get his sneakers). A team must have at least five players dressed and ready to play in order to receive any points under the Forfeit Rule. LOS was able to overcome this gaft and won this closely contested game. It may have been a different story if they had used better judgement!

BREW CREW WINS SECOND STRAIGHT TITLE!
September 2, 2007 --
The Brew Crew capped off an outstanding summer by winning its second cosecutive Rego Park 30 & Over championship by defeating four-time champ The Legends 56-49 in a hard fought battle that came down to late game free throws. The contest was close throughout with neither team ever having a double didget lead. In the end, the Brew Crew made clutch free throws while The Legends, who made every clutch free throw down the stretch of their previous game against Carter Ledyard, could buy one.
Speedy Williams was the only Brew Crew player to score double figures and finished with 23 points, earning the game's MVP honors. Kevin Young led the legends with 13 points.

BREW CREW ADVANCES TO CHIP
August 24, 2007 --
In a game that exemplifies playoff basketball, the Brew Crew advanced to the championship by defeating Ft. Greene 74-63. The final score was not indicative of how close this game was, wire to wire. Brew Crew led 38-33 at the half. However, Ft. Greene started the second half with a 7-2 run to knot it at 40 apiece. Then it was a dogfight until the closing seconds.
Donn Chung and Speedy Williams provided a dynamic backcourt duo scoring 17 and 18 points respectively. Rippey led Ft. Greene with 22 and Stokes chipped in 18 in the losing cause. It appears that this may be the start of a rivalry - we'll see what next summer has to offer.
The Brew Crew goes on to meet the winner of the Legends/Carter-Ledyard semi-final to be played Saturday.

QUARTER FINAL RESULTS
August 20, 2007 --
The quarter-finals provided the same competative tone that was set throughout the summer, with all four games going down to the closing minutes before being decided. All four favorites moved on to the final four.
In the first game, Carter Ledyard defeated a game LOS squad 58-52. LOS played the game short-handed and it cost them when a couple of players got into foul trouble, thus causing them to rely on matador defense. CL took advantage by attacking inside, led by Ed and Bruce who each scored 14 points.
In the second game, Ft. Greene and Queensbridge battled to the closing seconds. Queensbridge led throughout, but couldn't build a significant lead. However, they played with sense of determination, something that's been missing since the fifth week. Ft. Greene played with a "never say die" attitude to get the late lead and hold on to win 77-71. Rippey led Ft. Greene with 33 points.
Top seeded Brew Crew had its hands full with the tenacious play of MOB. Although they were undersized, MOB played big and pressured the Brew Crew all game beforre falling 73-67. The key moment may have been when MOB loss leading scorer Brent Donatione, last week's player of the week, when he was called for a technical and had to leave the game in the closing moments. MOB missed his shooting ability as they were unsuccessful on a couple of three point tries. Kirk led the Brew Crew with 25 points.
Once again, the Headcases lived up to their name. With a 3 point deficit and less than five minutes in the game, they commit a foul which was followed by TWO unsporting technical fouls against a Headcase player that resulted in SIX free throws and possession of the ball for the Legends, who converted on that possession, leading to a 66-55 victory for the four time champs. That series was the obvious turning point of the game as the Headcases put up a good fight until that point. Boo Harvey and Kevin Young paced the Legends with 17 points apiece. And to keep true to their name, a Headcase player stole the game ball after the game. (I guess Bill had the right idea when he named this team.).

REGULAR SEASON ENDS, PLAYOFFS BEGIN
August 12, 2007 --
Saturday marked both the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs.
The Brew Crew finished the season as the top seed by defeating Ft. Greene 61-52. It was a see-saw game throughout, however, Ft. Greene failure to use good clock management in the closing minute cost them the game. Ft Greene now faces Queensbridge in the quarter finals this upcoming Saturday. Donn led Brew Crew with 14 points. Happy chipped in with 13. Robbie Led Ft. Greene with 17.
The second game of the day marked the beginning of the start of the 2007 playoffs with MOB facing The Posse. Playing short-handed and not being able to get a consitant flow, the Posse fell to MOB 85-71. The Posse had no answer for Brent who scored a league season high 43 points. MOB moves on to face the top seeded Brew Crew. In an earlier matchup, MOB gave the Brew Crew a tough battle. As mentioned before, MOB is a team you'd like to avoid come playoff time.

MOB returned to the court for a second time on Saturday and defeated The Headcases 72-68. MOB was led by Brent's 22 points. MOB is a scrappy team that will give teams trouble ion the playoffs. In fact, a few teams have said that they would be wary of them if they had to face them in the playoffs.
Sunday's games began with Carter Ledyard finishing their season with a 58-41 victory over the Headcases. T.D. led Carter Ledyard with 19 points. The Headcases lived up to their name by constantly arguing amongst themselves during the game. It appears they have a "problem child" and they'll need to overcome that in order to succeed in the playoffs.
The Posse lost out on an opportunity of a first round bye when it lost to LOS 69-64. With its victory, LOS avoided having to play a first round game. James Gant led LOS with 18 points.
In the much anticipated match-up between The Legends and Brew Crew, thr Brew Crew prevailed 66-58. The game was highly intense as the score was close throughout (no team had a double didget lead ). Greg "Boo" Harvey kept the Legends in the game with 24 points, however, the Brew Crew prevailed behind 32 points and non-stop trash talking from James "Speedy" Williams. The victory moved the Brew Crew into first place and gave the Legneds their first defeat of the summer. The Brew Crew has to defeat Fort Greene next week to finish with the number 1 seed.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - James "Speedy" Williams, Brew Crew

July 30, 2007 --

WEEK 7 RECAP
July 26, 2007 --
Queensbridge, who won their first 5 games, have now lost 3 in a row. Ft Greene uphended the the Bridge 58-47. Queensbridge struggled with only 5 players and showed some signs of descention. They need to get it together before their final game, against Carter Ledyard, to go into the playoofs on a positive note. Ft Greene was led by Mike (14) and Rob (13).
Carter Ledyard rebounded from its first loss of the season by defeating LOS 78-63. Playing without two of the players involved in the previous week's in-fighting, CL played with cohesion. Five players scored in double figures, led by Rah's 21.
After a brief rest, LOS regrouped and got back on the court for its second game of the day to face MOB. This time they prevailed witha 74-58 victory. John led LOS with 17 points. Preston led MOB with 17 in a losing cause.
Headcases returned to the winning column by defeating the Posse 59-46. Ty led the Headcases with 17 points.
Sunday's games began with the only forfiet of the summer as the Primetimers had a problem getting off Long Island. As a result, MOB got its first win.
In a much anticipated match-up, The Legends remained the leagues only undefeated team with a 44-31 win over Carter Ledyard. CL hurt its chances by arriving with ten minutes left in the first half. In a show of sportmanship, the Legends refused to take the points in the time-shortened game. Kevin Young's 11points led the legends.

WEEK 6 RECAP
Week 6 was an abbreviated week, only three games. Carter Ledyard suffered its first lost of the summer, falling to the Brew Crew 63-48. C.L. was never really into the game, spending more time crying to the officials and arguing amongst each other. They totally lacked focus and thus ended their winning streak. The Brew Crew was led by Kirk and Don with 13 and 12 repectively.
Fort Greene edged the Posse 62-56. The Fort was affected by the late arrival of their players. They had better be on time next week as Queensbridge will be waiting for them. Rippy and Stokes were tied for game high honors with 18 points apiece. The Posse continues to impress even when they lose. Observers have said they are a guard away from being a top team.
In the game of the day, the Legends faced Queensbridge and this game went into overtime before the Legends prevailed 78-76 to remain the only unbeaten team in the league. "Thirty" returned for Queensbridge this week and scored a game high 24, including five three pointer. However, that was not enough as the Legends had five players in double figures, led by Howie Hudson's 23. The Legends next face Carter Ledyard on Sunday.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Howie Hudson, The Legends

WEEK 5 RECAP
July 9, 2007 --
Fort Greene returned from a week off only to run into the first place Legends. The Legends appear to be on the top of their game as they defeated the Fort 86-78. The Legends were led by Kevin Young and Greg "Boo" Harvey with 19 and 18 points repectively. The Legends remain undefeated, but face the very dangerous Queensbridge squad next week.
Queensbridge suffered its first loss of the summer, falling 72-55 to the Brew Crew. Kirk led the Brew Crew with 23 points. Queensbridge was led by Killz' 22 point, but they definately missed "Thirty", who was a no show.
The Posse gained its second win of the summer by beating the Primetimers 58-49. The Posse's scoring was led by Jason who dropped in 19.
The game of the day was LOS vs the Headcases, which went into double overtime. This was LOS's second double OT game this summer, however, this time they pulled it out for their first victory 60-58. James led LOS with 19 points, after opting for free agency from the Legends.
PLAYER OF TH WEEK - Greg "Boo" Harvey, The Legends

WEEK 4 RECAP
July 3, 2007 --
This was a double-dip weekend in which games were played on both Saturday and Sunday. When the smoke cleared, there were still three (3) undefeated teams and 1 permanent banishment from the league.
In Saturday's games, The Posse got their first win of the season by beating MOB 83-64. The Posse's scoring attack was led by Dax's 18 points.
Queensbridge remained undefeated with a 84-58 drubbing of the Primetimers. Floyd "Workhorse" Boyd led a balanced scoring attack finishing with 19 points.
In Sunday's action, Carter Ledyard continued its winning ways by defeating MOB 70-54. Nigel led CL with 15 points. MOB got a game high 25 from Brent. MOB showed signs of being a team that you may not want to face in the playoffs. However, they lose a player who received the first ever league ban in Rego Park history, due to behavior that was beyond unexceptable. Rego Park 30 & Over prides itself on not being a "hood tournement". We do not tolerate "hood tournament" mentality. Our staff works hard, beginning in January of each year, to provide a quality league for its players. That's why we have lasted for 12 years and plan to be around many more. Many players have come and gone, but the Rego Park 30 & Over is still going strong. On a related note with regards to this game, as a freshman at Eastern Michigan Unviersity, we played Indiana State with Larry Bird, who was a junior at the time. I learned that day that you can talk all the trash you want, as long as you back it up. And boy did Larry back it up that night. However, if you can't back it up, SHUT UP AND PLAY BALL! This is our lesson for the day.
Also on Sunday, the Brew Crew got revenge for their only loss by wearing out the Headcases 61-50 in their rematch. The headcases only had five players and it caught up to them in the second half. Dave led BC with 22.
The Legends remained undefeated by beating the Posse 64-56. Kevin Young led a balance attack with 16 points. The Posse, coming off its first win, could not sustain the momentum.
Queensbridge continued its winning ways with a 71-52 win over LOS. For the first time this summer, LOS began the game with a full crew, but it seems they didn't come to play. Maybe they are better off when they show up late. The Bridge was once again led by "Workhorse" who had 14. Rain and Thirty added 12 points apiece.
With victories next weekend, The Legends & Queensbridge would set up what might be the game of the summer on July 14 between two undefeated teams. But Fort Greene and the Brew Crew stand in their way.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Floyd Boyd, Queensbridge.

WEEK 3 RECAP
June 24, 2007 --
Week 3 has followed the same pattern as the previous two with closely contested games. After three weeks of competition, three teams still remain undefeated. The week was highligted by a double overtime finale.
The Posse could not follow the lead of Greg Redman (probably the oldest player in the league), who played with a lot of heart and determination. But it takes five man effort and the Posse didn't show that this week in its disappointing loss to Carter Ledyard (who remained undefeated) 66-52.
Fort Greene continued its winning ways with a 87-70 victory over the Primetimers. The Fort was led by Rip's 17 points.
In a game highlighted in last week's Daily News, The Legends remained undefeated by knocking off the Headcases 51-47. This game was a physical battle that was close throughout. A couple of key turnovers and mental lapses ( not boxing out the free throw shooter) cost the Headcases. Kevin Young showed that there is still some spring left (though barely) by leading the Legends with 19 points.
Queensbridge also continued its undefeated season by beating MOB 55-38. The Bridge used its size advantage by continually feeding the post. Workhorse led the Bridge with 17 points.
The game of the day was between the Brew Crew and LOS. It took not 1 but 2 overtimes to decide this one. Once again, LOS victimized itself by having a number of players arrive late. Sooner or later, they will realize how much easier the game is when you show up on time and get a decent warmup. In twelve years of play, I haven't seen not 1 player step directly from the car onto the court and make a positive impact. But back to the game itself. Both teams had opportunities to win in regulation and the first overtime, but didn't take advantage. Brew Crew capitalized on those ooportunities in the second OT, making free throws in the clutch to pull it out 71-66. Kirk led the Brew Crew with 21 points.
Next week, The Posse plays MOB. Someone is guarenteed its first win of the summer!
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Greg Redman, The Posse

WEEK 2 RECAP
June 17, 2007 --
After two weeks of competition, we are not sure who may be a favorite, however Queensbridge, The Legends and Carter Ledyard are making a case for themselves remaining undefeated. No miracle finishes this week, but the games have been competative. However, history was made as Brenda Payne became the first woman official to officiate in the Rego Park Classic in its twelve year history. Congradulations to her on a fine job.
Making their league debut, M O B gave a gutty performance against four time champs The Legends before falling 86-65. Surprisingly, The Legends came with its full crew which unusual this early in the season. Boo Harvey led a balanced attack for the Legends with 11 points. Bucci led M O B with 16.
A team making its season debut was the Primetimers. Unfortunately the came up against Carter Ledyard who was coming off of an emotional overtime win last week. They carried that momentum into this week's action with an impressive 74-59 win. Ed led C.L. with 16 points while Dave dropped 12 for the Primetimers.
Queensbridge continued show why they are a perenial power by handing the Headcases their first lost of the season 61-56. Rob and Thirty led the Bridge with 19 and 17 repectively. The Headcase could not build on last weeks upset of the Brew Crew, but they showed that that win was not a fluke by battling Queensbridge from start to finish.
Speaking of the Brew Crew, they rebounded from week 1's loss by defeating the Posse 68-58. The Posse had a 1 point lead at the half and fought hard throughout, a big difference from the week before when they appeared to give up midway through the second half. However, the Brew Crew came deep this week and showed good chemestry. The Posse looks like they will be a team to be reconded with after they get a couple more games under their belt.
Finally, Fort Greene showed that Brooklyn grit by rebounding from last week's overtime loss with a 64-61 victory over LOS. Rippy, Robbie and Mike (sound like a New Edition reunion) led the Fort with 19.18 and 14 repectively. LOS once again gave a valiant performance proving that with a couple of more games, they will be hard to beat.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Devon Rippey, Fort Greene

WEEK 1 RECAP
June 11, 2007 --
Despite week 1 starting on a down note with the postp[onement of the first game between newcomer MOB from Brooklyn and the Primetimers from Suffolk Co., this may have been the best opening week in league history. 3 of the 4 games played were decides by 3 points or less. The other game marked the return of a perrenial power after a year off.
Queensbridge did not play in the league last year, but returned this year looking like a team to be reckoned with. The Bridge defeated The Posse 56-36. Killz led Queensbridge with 18 points. The Posse held it own until a second half 8-0 run by the Bridge put the game out of reach.
The closest final of the day was a 61-60 upset by the Headcases over defending champs Brew Crew. The Headcases jumped out to an early lead which they never reliquished. Brew Crew, behind 19 from Donn Chung and 12 from Kirk, made it close, but they came up short. PO led the Headcases with 16 points.
Four-time champs, The Legends, held on to beat LOS 64-62. LOS was in the game throughout, despite the fact that two keuy players arrived late. Who knows what the outcome might have been had they come on time. Mel S. led LOS with 28 points.
In the game of the day, Carter Ledyard (formally D.Hall), and Fort Greene had to go into overtime before they settled this one. The halftime score was 28-28. It was 60-60 after regulation. Neither team would give in. In fact, Fort Greene got a buzzer beating 3 pointer from "Basketball Bob" to send it into OT. However, C.L. prevailed in the extra session 70-67. Rip had 24 and Robbie 21 for Fort Greene. C.L. was led by Troy's 25 points.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - James Gant, The Legends
