Dunfermline Reign Golf Day 2009 - The Dora, Cowdenbeath

REIGN GOLF DAY REPORT - Photos to follow soon!

Saturday 29th August saw the the beginning of the newest event in the Reign calander with the first annual Dunfermline Reign golf day. A great response from players and coaches, both present and former, along with family and friends saw a field of 20 do battle across 18 holes on the Dora Golf Course in Cowdenbeath.

The golfers were split into 2 teams to fight it out in 5 fourballs matches with club captain Barry Pringle leading the red team and Stuart McHardy captaining the blue team. At just before 1pm Scott Hamilton stood on the first tee and smacked a drive down the middle of the fairway and the match was underway. Hamilton was teaming up with dad Gavin representing the red team whilst the blues sent out another father-son team in Alec and Neil Bruce. The Bruces outplayed their opponents early on to lead by a couple of holes at the turn but Scott and Gavin hung in there and by the time the opening fourball reached the 17th tee they had clawed their way back to just one down with two to play. With news filtering through that the blues were struggling in several groups further back the importance of the opening match for captain McHardy's team was apparent but the Hamiltons continued their fightback to win the 17th and take the opening match right to the wire. It looked as though the blues were set to take the opening point with Gavin out the hole and Scott in a greenside bunker but the youngster played one of the shots of the tournament to knock it to a foot out of the sand and then tap in the putt to ensure the point would be shared.

The second match on the course saw the clubs juniors do battle with Dougie Taylor and Jordan Lamb of the reds taking on Ali Horne and Jack Gavine of the blues. The match was one of high quality from the start with Taylor and Lamb taking two of the opening four holes with birdies. After that the match went back and forward all the way round but again the honours were even and with several matches finshing early behind them it was infact this half point that was enough to push the winning team towards the 3 points required for victory. The high quality of play in this match was emphasised with Dougie Taylor picking up the prize for the closest to the pin competition at the par 3 9th and the longest drive competition at the 18th.

Match 3 saw the blues send out the pair of Mike Stevenson and Stuart Harwood with the reds pitting Daryll and Richard Wood against them. Harwood and Stevenson played steady early on to lead by two holes but then some blistering play around the turn saw the Woods rattle off 5 holes in a row and from there they never looked back closing out the match on the 16th green to win 3 and 2 and give the reds their first full point of the day.

Next on the course was Norman Little and Neil Thomson for the reds against Craig Hamilton and Graham Barne for the blues. Good early play on both teams saw the first several holes all halved with pars before Little and Thomson pull ahead to lead by 3 after 8 but Hamilton made par at the short 9th to ensure his team were only down two at the turn. With the rain lashing down and wind up though the four struggled round the start of the back nine and the score was still 2 up to the reds with the four going down the 15th when Thomson played a stunning 7 wood into the heart of the green from 200 yards back giving him two putts for the hole which he succedded in doing to leave the match dormie 3. At the next hole it was Thomsons playing partners turn to shine with Norman Little sending his approach into the green to just 10 feet and two putts from there was enough to take the hole and the match 4 and 2 to the reds.

The final match saw reds captain Barry Pringle and Jimmy Steel take on the blues captain Stuart McHardy and his playing partner Stuart Anderson. It was McHardy and Anderson who took the early laed, they held onto this around the turn and with the rain lashing down into his face going down the 12th McHardy stepped up to play a superb approach into the green with his teamates in the group infront looking on to really put the blues in the driving seat. However again it was the reds who played the closing holes better and with the rest of the teams already in the 19th hole it was again all square between the four as they walked off the final green and that left the final score 3 1/2 - 1 1/2 in favour of captain Pringles red team.

Overall the event was a major success played in great spirits and with some fantastic shots being played all afternoon long around the course. A big thanks to all those who attended and to Dora Golf Course for playing host to the event, congratualations to the winners and we will hopefully see everyone back for next years event.
