2007 Spring High School Player - Highlights
March 30, 2007  --   Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. Stay focused and keep working hard.

Jim Pipilo (17u) putting in a solid defensive performance behind the dish. Went 2 for 4 at the plate, banging a double off the right field fence and launching a tape measure "Grand Slam" to left. People are just starting to take notice of this big, strong armed catcher who shows discipline and promise with the stick.

    Colin Sallee 17u
went 2 for 3 with one RBI and scored a run this past Sat. against Lane Tech.

    Kevin Crane
CHOOOO, CHOOOO - The "Crane Train" is back on track. First Game, First inning, First pitch, last fastball they threw him. with good location on his off speed pitches. Great way to start the season...

    Nick Chmielewski
Chimmer 4 2/3 innings 7k's 1BB allowed 3 hits while overcoming some very shaky defense. Chimmer the PITCHER, while not having his best fastball used a nasty hammer and other off speed pitches to lead Sandburg to a 10 - 3 victory.

Kasey Ourada threw 9 pitches in the first inning in striking out 3 hitters. Kasey pitched 5 innings to help his team to victory over Montini and Pete Cappetta "The Undertaker". Heard his velocity was upper 80's with his nasty hammer to go along with it.

Mike Rizzo 17u led Glenbrook North with a win. Pitched 7 innings and gave up two hits

    Week of March 19th

It appears everyone is off to a good start…

Let's here the results from your games. Forecast is rain for the next two days.

Kyle Ayers started off his season with a very impressive 2-1 win over Geneva HS. Think we will be hearing a lot about Kyle in the future? You can count on it. Strong arm, good size and great attitude, go get em kid. Kyle’s fast ball sat 88-91, with a real nasty slider.
4 innings pitched, 69 pitches, 9K's and 0 BB, while allowing only 2 hits. 9K's in 4 innings, hard to believe you allowed your fielders to make 3 putouts, room for improvement?

    Great job!!

    -------------------------------------------------
Kyle Hunter pitched 3 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 6 K's as Galesburg HS defeated Rockford Auburn 8-0.
Kyle has also been nationally ranked by Baseball America # 73 class of 2008
    Great job Kyle

    -------------------------------------------------
    Quote from HS Baseball web.com
JOHN FLANAGAN LHP pitched a no-hitter in 7 full innings of work in his first outing today for Bellville West High School in Bellville, IL.

With 30+ scouts present, John Flanagan put on a display that rivals few this spring as a tall 6'6" lanky athlete coming fresh off the bowling lanes as High School State Champion bowler with a 240 average in State Tournament. In 7 innings of effortless work, Flanagan threw 76 pitches working above 90 for most of the game keeping hitters off-balance with command of off-speed pitches as well as a lively fastball.

He is very similar to Zachary Duke in make-up and mechanics. He will get stronger as weather continues to get warmer this spring and has an OFP grade that is off the charts, IMHO. This player could be the late-charger toward the top of the heap along with Nevin Griffith of Middleton HS in Tampa, FL. peace shep

John Flanagan gained my attention as well as many others this past summer in San Diego, CA in the AFLAC scrimmage games the day before the televised main event.

    -------------------------------------------------
    Congrats to Brett Van Asdlen
Last week Minooka HS won in extra innings. Brett went 2/3, 1 double and threw out the only two runners that tried to steal.

No one should be running in your house Big Papi

Top Tier Baseball - Optimistic about 2007 - Talent and Chemistry
February 4, 2007  --   Coach Tolan - “We might not win every game. But our passion and “will” to win will be relentless”

Head coach Tolan is focused on taking the Top Tier baseball program to become one of the premier programs in the nation. Tolan’s plan for the future is simple: “win through hard work and dedication, with a primary focus on doing things the "right" way both on and off the field. We might not win every game. But our passion and “will” to win will be relentless.”

"We are very excited about this group of players some of them are new and some have been playing together for about three consecutive summers. Our past 18u teams have been tremendous. However, this team is going to have great talent with unbelievable team chemistry. The team is also extremely well balanced with speed, defense, power and some big time pitching with lots of depth. The only impediment that we might run into is the draft taking away some of our players, It was a big blow losing Joe Benson and Zach McAlister in last years draft (2nd round, Minn. Twins, 5th round New York Yankees). But, we are thrilled on how everything has turned out for them. However, our depth is one of our greatest assets.”

“Our goal for 2007 is to get into the Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, New Mexico and make these players become impact players when they step on their college fields as freshmen.”

Tolan’s review on Top Tier players –

    Outfielders:

    Pete Cappetta
Committeed to University of Illinois – Tremendous, versatile athlete that could play SS or Outfield. Once he fills out he could possibly be a five tool player. Strong arm. In the outfield he chases balls down like a gazelle. Great work ethic.

    Kevin Crane
Uncommitted. Kevin ran into an arm injury that is now fully healed. He is a definite five tool player – No park is too big for this kids power. Tremendous impact player.

    Casey McMurray
Committed to University of Illinois – Five tool player, old school type player that plays through any injury. Explosive bat speed. They don’t make players like this anymore. He might be quiet in the dugout, but he can change the outcome of the game with his bat or glove.

    Ian Goldberg
Committed to Tufts University – Outstanding makeup with a sweet lefty swing that sprays to all fields with serious gap power and bunts well for base hits.

    Dain Hall
Committed to University of Villanova - Solid multi-position player. Plays INF/OF exceptionally well. Extremely fast – Steals bases and tracks down balls in the gap effortlessly, Great athlete with power.

    Jared Levi
Uncommitted – Solid hitter, great bat speed, explosive swing to all fields, great attitude and plays hard.

    Infielders:

    Matt Burch
Uncommitted – First Basemen that hits well to the opposite field. Great work ethic and will develop into a power hitter.

    John Williams
Committed to Parkland College – Third Basemen/First Basemen - Very intriguing player to many MLB teams. One of the hardest swinging 18u players. Extremely fast hands with a strong arm. Great frame – 6’3 – 235 lbs.

    Derek Graham
Uncommitted – Solid multi-position player. Infielder/Outfielder – Solid defensive skills, strong arm with good gap power to all fields. Injured last year but is coming back stronger than ever.

    Jordan Rosenberg
Uncommitted – Third Basemen/First Basemen – Recovered from Tommy John surgery. Pretty amazing how fast he recovered. Good gap power that will generate a lot of RBI’s. Hard worker that should have a good upcoming season.

    Andrew Trepel
Uncommitted - SS / 2B – Great situational hitter that is projected to hit with lots of power. Hard-nosed and good feel for the game. Smooth glove. The kid knows how to swing it.

    Josh Tolan
Committed to Purdue University – SS / 2B – Solid defensive skills with great range. Smooth line drive swing to all fields. Hard-nosed, Lead off type hitter. Has led in Stolen Bases for the past 2 years. Creates havoc on bases.

    Catchers:

    Cameron McConnell
Committed to Notre Dame – One of the best arms in the nation, excellent skill sets behind the dish. When he gets that bat going, he will be a tremendous draft pick.

    Brett Van Asdlen
Uncommitted – Power hitting catcher, blocks and frames well, accurate in-game thrower. Work horse behind the plate. Very intriguing power once he develops better balance. MLB teams like his pro type body – 6’4”-225 lbs. I love his hard-nosed attitude.

    Pitchers:

    Nick Chmielewski
Committed to University of Illinois – RHP that many MLB teams are extremely interested in. This summer Nick should be sitting low 90’s and occasionally lighting the gun at 95 mph. Great competitor that always wants the ball.

    Casey Crosby
Committed to University of Illinois – The 6’4”, 195 lbs, lefty might be the most sought after pitcher in Illinois. Dominating type pitcher with an explosive fastball and has strong command on both sides of the plate. This summer Casey should be an effortless low 90’s and occasionally touching 94 mph. Upside is unlimited.

    John Flanagan
Uncommitted – This 6’6”, 220 lbs front line lefty pitcher has all the scouts buzzing. Explosive fastball (93mph) with big league movement, dominating, effortless type pitcher with unlimited potential. Nasty 11-5 breaking ball that cork screws batters in the ground. His biggest skill are his live arm and unbelievable mound presence.

    Steve Godawa
Committed to Valparaiso University – RHP that has a live rubber arm that has allows him to make a couple appearances in a weekend. Good fastball (89 mph) with solid secondary pitches, paints corners. Will be primarily used to set up and close.

    Gerry Martinez
Committed to Parkland College – RHP that gets ahead in counts, throws a heavy ball with late life, effortless delivery, dominates hitters with solid mechanics. Should be throwing 90+ by the summer.

    Grant Monroe
Committed to Duke University – RHP 6’4, 205 lbs – Great size, very athletic, Poised and competitive on the mound. A groomed dominating pitcher with fluid mechanic's, sneaky quick velocity, fires a heavy ball and has great mound presence. Should be throwing 90+ by the summer. Knows how to kick it in a higher gear in pressure situations.

    Kasey Ourada
Uncommitted – RHP 6’3”, 190. Good size. Live arm. Mentally tough. Strong work ethic, Tall lanky (will fill out nicely), very coachable, works well under pressure. Wins every time he steps on the field with filthy stuff. Very crafty and is always working ahead in the count. Throws a lot of grounders. He is an infielders dream pitcher.

    Eric Wyman
Committed to University Illinois Chicago – Big athletic lefty - 6’3”, 210 lbs Deceptive velocity (89mph), challenges all hitters, fearless on mound, nasty slider to right handers, pitches to both sides of the plate, deceptive move to first, great poise and composure. Knows how to win.

    Kyle Ayers
Committed to Parkland College – RHP 6’4”, 210 lbs – Big hard throwing (91 mph) righty. Great frame that projects well. Is a sleeper that will make a name for himself soon.

Top Tier is almost finished with it’s recruiting and will be announcing two more big name pitchers very soon.

LAKE FOREST, IL- Full Package Athletics’ co-founder and CEO Todd Fine guided his Top Tier/Full Package 18-U travel baseball team to an outstanding 40-5 record in concluding the summer travel season late last week. Top Tier/Full Package won six of the eight tournaments it entered this summer.

The team began the season by capturing the Ho Chunk Classic in Lynwood, IL. The team also won the Kenosha Triple Crown Classic in Kenosha, WI.

Top Tier/Full Package won the USSSA State Championship and the Purdue Showcase in late June. In capturing the Purdue championship, the team beat USA Athletic, the Indy Bulls, Springfield and Bloomington. Top Tier/Full Package swept the Ann Arbor Braves to win the championship. Ann Arbor featured USA Today 1st Team All-American selection Zack Putnam.

The team also won the Indy Bulls 4th of July Tournament during the holiday weekend. Top Tier/Full Package defeated the Indy Bulls, Indy Bulldogs, Indiana Yankees, Hammond Chiefs, Kentucky Colonels, Cincinnati Mavericks and Team Ohio en route to the tournament title.

Fine’s team played in the prestigious Perfect Game World Wood Bat Championships in Marietta, GA from July 11-July 17, 2005. The team was unable to complete the tournament due to inclement weather.

Top Tier/Full Package won the Connie Mack Illinois State Baseball Championship in Springfield, IL for the second consecutive year on July 22. In capturing its second straight state title, the team qualified for the Connie Mack Midwest Regional Championships in Battle Creek, MI the week of July 25th.

The team had two close games before being eliminated in the Midwest Regional Championships. The team was without its starting second and third basemen respectively, and was also missing two pitchers for the Connie Mack Regional Championships.

The 2005 edition of the Top Tier/Full Package 18-U team featured 20 seniors who received Division I scholarships and four juniors (all of whom are top ten players in the state) who are being heavily recruited by schools across the nation. Included in this group is Wade Kapteyn, a pitcher from Illiana Christian HS. Kapteyn was selected to participate in the prestigious, invitation-only Area Code Games in Long Beach, CA. Only the top 30 juniors in the entire country are selected for the Area Code Games.

Top Tier/Full Package’s record is even more impressive when you consider they played without the services of their number one pitcher (Michael Bowden) and starting catcher (Greg Yersich), both of whom were drafted in June’s Major League Baseball Draft. Bowden was a first round draft choice of the Boston Red Sox and Yersich was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the eighth round. Both players have signed professional contracts with their respective clubs.

Top Tier/Full Package has had 37 players receive Division I scholarships in the past two years and seven players with Top Tier/Full Package affiliations were selected in June's Major League Baseball draft.

LAKE FOREST, IL- The Top Tier/Full Package 16-Under travel baseball team captured the Blue/Grey Classic: Battle of the States tournament title in Kissimmee, FL late last week. Top Tier/Full Package compiled a 5-1 record and defeated teams from across the nation en route to the championship.

Top Tier/Full Package was made up of players exclusively from Illinois, while many of their opponents fielded teams from multiple states. Most of the teams were also made up of players in the graduating class of 2006 (seniors-to-be), while Top Tier/Full Package’s roster was made up of only two 2006’s and the remaining 12 players were 2007’s.

Top Tier/Full Package defeated teams from Pennsylvania, Connecticut and regional teams from New England, the Southeast (GA, NC) and the Mid-America region. The teams’ lone loss was a close decision to the powerful Miami team. The Mid-Atlantic team opposed Top Tier/Full Package in the championship game, but was cancelled in the second inning due to inclement weather. The two teams were declared co-champions.

Head Coach Richard Tolan commented, “It was a total team effort and everyone contributed. We didn’t give up any big innings and guys picked each other up.”

Tolan also added that countless scouts approached him and were looking forward to seeing his players’ continued development next year. Tolan concluded by saying he thought the teams’ success was due in large part to his players’ experience and playing together across the country during the summer season.

Top Tier/Full Package became the first predominant 16-Under team to win the championship and only the second team from Illinois since 1992.

The Blue/Grey Classic concluded another exceptional summer for the Top Tier/Full Package baseball program. Along with its’ win at the Blue/Grey Classic, the 16-Under team also won the following tournaments; LumberYard June Slugfest, Triple Crown - Illinois State Champions, Indiana Hoosier Classic, and finished fourth in the CABA World Series in Marietta, Georgia.

The 18-Under team, coached by Full Package co-founder Todd Fine, finished the summer with an astonishing record of 40-5 and included 20 Division I players. The team won six of the eight tournaments it entered during the summer travel season.

The team began the season by capturing the Ho Chunk Classic in Lynwood, IL and the Kenosha Triple Crown Classic in Kenosha, WI. Top Tier/Full Package won the USSSA State Championship and the Purdue Showcase in late June as well. Top Tier/Full Package also won the Indy Bulls 4th of July Tournament during the holiday weekend.

The 2005 edition of the Top Tier/Full Package 18-U team featured 20 seniors who received Division I scholarships and four juniors (all of whom are top ten players in the state) who are being heavily recruited by schools across the nation.
