10 VIKING HEAD TO MEET OF CHAMPIONS
10 VIKING SWIMMERS QUALIFIED FOR THE MEET OF CHAMPIONS THIS YEAR, 4 GIRLS AND 6 BOYS. FOR THE GIRLS: THE MEDLEY RELAY TEAM OF LIZ SAMTUR, GESS CHARNIGA, ABBY WEINGARTEN, AND LAUREN SOCIENSKI. INDIVIDUALLY GESS AND ABBY ALSO QUALIFED IN THE 100 BREASTROKE. GESS MADE IF BACK FOR CONSOLATIONS AND FINISHED 13TH OVERALL.
FOR THE BOYS: CALVIN CHIU, TYLER WARDLOW, BEN WOLLER, AND JAMES KUGEL MADE IT IN THE 200 MEDLEY RELAY. CHIU, WARDLOW, KUGEL, AND WILL SAMTUR MADE IT IN THE 400 FREE RELAY. INDIVIDUALLY TYLER WARDLOW QUALIFIED IN THE 200IM, AND THE 100 BACK, CALVIN CHIU QUALIFIED IN THE 100 BACK, AND TYLER BLACKBURN QUALIFIED IN THE 500 FREE. BLACKBURN WAS THE HIGHEST FINISHER FOR THE VIKINGS TAKING 18TH OVERALL IN THE 500 FREE.

BOTH THE BOYS AND GIRLS TEAM WENT UNDEFEATED IN THE RED DIVISON TO CAPTURE THEIR FIRST EVEN DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIPS!

BOTH VIKING TEAMS 2ND AT GMC'S!
Both the boys and girls swim teams had a great day at the GMC Championships on Saturday. The boys and girls both finished 2nd overall. For the girls it was the best finish in school history. For the boys, it was the 3rd straight year they took second. The teams combined took home 30 medals, broke 9 school records, and had 10 individuals qualify for the meet of champions in March.
Gessica Charniga became the first ever female champion from South Brunswick with a dominating win in the 100 breastroke. She set new school records in the 200 IM and the 100 breastroke as well as being on a school record setting 200 Medley Relay team along with Liz Samtur, Abby Weingaten, and Lauren Socienski. Charniga, Samtur, Socienski, and Danielle Bartolotta teamed up to destroy their own school record by over six seconds in the 400 free relay. Charniga, Weingarten, Samtur, and Socienski will all be heading to the meet of champions.
On the boys side, Calvin Chiu, Tyler Wardlow, Ben Woller, and James Kugel absolutely crushed the 200 Medley Relay school record by over 4 seconds. They also earned a trip to the meet of champions. Wardlow also qualified in the 200 IM, 100 backsroke and the 400 free relay. Calvin Chiu also qualified in the 100 backstroke and the 400 free relay. James Kugel and Will Samtur round out the other qualifiers in the 400 free relay. Tyler Blackburn made it in the 500 freestyle while setting a new school record in the 500 freestyle and becoming the first Viking to break the 5:00 barrier.

All team members had a great day and most swimmers had personal best times. Great peformances were turned in by Andrew Kudwitt, Ryan Finch, Chris Hochman, Andrew Gong, Mike Ungano, Sara Malinske, Sam Sterner, Courtnery Hartshorn, Katrina Low-Beer, and Vania Wu.


Girls Upset East Brunswick, Boys Win again!
The girls team rallied to an impressive victory over East Brunswick on Wednesday, Janauary 14th at Middlesex County College. The girls won 9 of the 11 events in a total team effort to take the Bears 98 -72. Gess Charniga won the 200 IM and the 100 Breastroke, Danielle Bartolotta won the 100 and 200 Freestyle, Lauren Socienski won the 50 free, Abby Weingarten won the 100 Fly and Liz Samtur won the 100 Backstoke.

The boys won all 11 events in route to another conference victory. The team was led by Tyler Wardlow, Tyler Blackburn, James Kugel, and Calvin Chiu, each of whom won 2 individual events.

The girls record now stands at 8 wins, 1 loss.
The boys record is at 8 wins, 2 losses.


Vikings Winning Streak Continues!
The boys and girls both beat Metuchen on Monday, January 12, 2009. The boys swept all 11 events and Tyler Blackburn broke his own school record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:07.99. Strong swims were turned in by Ben Woller, Mike Ungano, Andrew Kudwitt, and Calvin Chiu.
The girls were led by standout swimmer Gess Charniga who won the 200 IM and the 100 Breastroke. Other great swims by Katrina Low-Beer, Sam Sterner, and Danielle Bartolotta helped the girls secure the win.


Boys, Girls Defeat Sayreville
Both the boys and girls teams were victorious over Sayreville on Friday, January 9th, 2009. The girls team had great swimming from Abby Weingarten, Gess Charniga, Samantha Sterner as well as Lauren Dai, Sara Malinske, and Vania Wu. The boys were led by Tyler Wardlow, Tyler Blackburn, Calvin Chiu, and Andrew Gong. Andrew "Kuddy" Kudwitt, Matt Holsten, and Ben Woller also helped rack up the points for the Vikings. The girls team is now 6 - 1, and the boys 6 - 2.

GIRLS AND BOYS TOP PISCATAWAY! 3 SCHOOL RECORDS FALL!
Both the girls and the boys team beat Piscataway on Wednesday, January 7. Each team swept all 11 events in a dominating performance that saw 3 school records fall. Individual winners on the girls side were Sara Malinske, Gess Charniga, Lauren Socienski, Liz Samtur, Abby Weingarten and Lauren Dai. On the boys side the individual winners were Tyler Blackburn, Tyler Wardlow, James Kugel, Calvin Chiu, and Will Samtur.

Gess Charniga broke her own school record in the 100 Freestyle in the lead off leg of the 400 Free Relay with a time of 56.22. The relay record also fell thanks to Liz Samtur, Danielle Bartolotta, and Lauren Socienski with a combined time of 3:59.14. They shattered the old mark of 4:01.44.
Calvin Chiu broke the school record in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 57.26.


GIRLS DEFEAT RANCOCAS VALLEY, IMPROVE TO 4 - 1.
The girls beat a strong Rancocas Valley team on December 22 by a score of 102 - 68. The Viking girls used their depth to earn the victory. Winners included Danielle Bartolotta in the 100 Freestyle, Liz Samtur in the 100 Backstroke, and Gess Charniga in the 100 Breastroke. The 400 Free Relay team of Bartolotta, Samtur, Vania Wu, and Sara Malinske won the last event of the meet to help the girls improve to a 4 and 1 record.

VIKINGS DEFEAT HAMILTON WEST
The girls team downed Hamilton West High School 124 - 46 on Saturday. Danielle Bartolotta, Gess Charniga, Lauren Socienski, Vania Wu, and Abby Weingarten were all individual winners for the Vikings. Lisa Majchrzak, Katrina Low-Beer, Teresa Ha and Courtney Hartshorn all contributed to the win.
The boys team won 119 - 51. Winners included James Kugel, Will Samtur, Tyler Wardlow, and Tyler Blackburn. Strong performances were turned in by Ben Woller, Andrew Gong, Jessie Liu, Kevin Atkinson and Scott Clark.


BOYS AND GIRLS BOTH TOP FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP AT DENUNZIO POOL
The girls team won 7 of 11 events and showed off some depth in defeating Freehold township by a score of 110 - 60. Inidividual Winners for the Vikings included Gess Charniga, Lauren Socienski, and Samantha Sterner. The girls also won two of the three relays thanks to Abby Weingarten, Liz Samtur, Sara Malinske and Danielle Bartolotta. The girls improve their overall record to 2 and 1.

The boys team won 105 - 64. Individual winners included Calvin Chiu in the 100 Fly and 100 Back. James Kugel won the 50 and 100 Freestyle and Tyler Blackburn took first in the 200 Free. The 200 free relay team was also victorious thanks to Chiu, Ben Woller, Will Samtur, and James Kugel.
The boys record is now at 3 - 1.


VIKINGS SPLIT AGAINST NORTH BRUNSWICK
The boys team showed off their depth with an impressive win over a talented North Brunswick team. The girls lost despite a great effort which included many top times and outstanding performances. Winners included Tyler Blackburn in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Calvin Chiu in the 100 backstroke and Gess Charniga in the 200 IM and 100 breastroke.

BOYS BATTLE ST. JOES RIGHT DOWN TO THE LAST EVENT
The boys team went right down to the last event against state power St. Joseph's - Metuchen. The boys got off to a quick start winning 3 or the first 4 events to take a slim lead. After 9 events the Vikings were close with the score at 71 - 69 in favor of St. Joe's. The final score was 92 - 78.
Tyler Blackburn won the 200 and 500 freestyles and set a new school record in the 500. The old record was set by Dan Ricker in the 98-99 season. Tyler Wardlow had an impressive win in the 200 Individual Medley and Senior James Kugel won both the 50 and 100 freestyle. The entire boys teams really rose to the challenge and turned in great performances. Way to go boys!


08-09 SEASON STARTS OFF GREAT!
Both the girls and boys teams started the season out with a great performance against Manalapan. Many swimmers recorded personal best times and showed great team spirit.
Congratulations to Gessica Charniga for setting a new school record in the 200 Individual Medley and also to Tyler Blackburn for setting two new class records in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Ryan Finch, Calvin Chiu, Liz Samtur, and Gess Charniga also broke class records. Great Job Vikings!
