Shockers warm it up a little.
Traditionally, the Wadena-Deer Creek Area Shockers have had a bad habit of starting slow in the Hi-10 and this year has been no exception. Anytime after Memorial Day and when the weather starts to heat up, the Shockers usually get hot.
This past weekend may be a sign of things starting to turn the corner as the team won two of three to get back on the winning track.
On Friday, the Shockers traveled to New York Mills to take on the Millers and came home with a 7-4 victory.
Seth Hamman
Three runs each in the first and fifth innings powered the Shockers. Travis George led off the game with a double and scored on big brother Jaymes RBI single. Jason Brueske followed suit with a RBI triple and Jamie Nordlund plated Brueske with a deep sacrifice fly to center field.
The Millers came back to score twice in the second and once in the third to make it 3-3.
The top of the order once again came through for the Shockers as they regained the lead for good. Travis George got plunked by a pitch and both Jayme George and Brueske walked to load the bases. Nordlund laid down an RBI single, then Lance Mayers bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch sealed the Millers fate as the Shockers took the 6-3 lead.
After the Millers scored once in the bottom of the sixth, the Shockers tallied another run in the eighth inning as Seth Hamman reached on a Miller error and scored on Jayme Georges RBI single.
Jayme George backed up his hitting performance with his arm on the mound for the Shockers. The lefty went the distance for the win, allowing eight hits and struck out 10 batters in nine innings.
The game with the Vergas Loons on Saturday in Deer Creek was a slugfest that was won by the Shockers 12-10. The game featured seven lead changes and the Shockers had to fend off a late rally by the Loons in the eighth inning to preserve the victory.
Nordlund scored on a Loon error to get the Shockers on the board first in the second inning. Vergas responded with a solo homer and another run to regain the lead 2-1 in the top of the third.

Both teams scored once in the fifth to keep the score tied. Jordan Wohlwend walked and scored on Mayers RBI double.
Then the Shockers found a power surge in the next two innings to score seven runs. Brueske, Nordlund and Wohlwend each laid down a single and then scored in the sixth inning to give the Shockers the 8-5 lead.

Shockers Open At Bluffton
The much-needed rain put a damper on the Wadena-Deer Creek Area Shockers season opener Sunday against Perham.
That game will be made up in a date to be determined.
Instead, the Shockers hope to jolt the local fans with another exciting year of amateur baseball action on Sunday, when they battle rival Bluffton Braves at 1:30 p.m. in Bluffton.
In their second year of existence since combining the old Wadena Chiefs and Deer Creek Cardinal town teams, the Shockers have already made a name for themselves by winning the Hi-10 League title and making a state amateur baseball appearance by capturing runner-up honors in the Region 14C tournament.
The Shockers return all nine starters of their lineup from the 2005 team with a few additions as they prepare to be a team to be reckoned with in the Hi-10. Most players are 17-31 years old and graduates of the Wadena-Deer Creek School system. Improved play of the younger players and solid play from the veterans have the Shockers looking to the 2006 season with high expectations, including another shot at the state tournament.
The Shockers will play their home games at the Elmer Becker Field in Deer Creek. Area fans can be assured that the local and hometown boys will give them plenty to be excited about as they take the field for the 2006 season.
