Chris Armas Press Release
Chris Armas Press Release
August 5, 2009  --

South Shore Soccer member inducted into LIJSL Hall of Fame
At the recent LIJSL Convention West Babylon's own Dennis Machtel was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Dennis has been an active member of the club for over 20 years as a coach for each of his three children, division coordinator, vice president, President a member of LISRA and an advocate for the Assistant Referee program and a volunteer helping with the in house referee program.  Dennis helped the club move from a CYO program to a self sustaining organization.  His unselfish commitment to the establishment of Van Bourgondien Park as the home venue for the club has set the stage for a wonderful venue for this fine sport to be played.

Like most of us when our children are young we want to share as much of their experiences as we can and to that end we become caches, team parents and do anything we can to help them. This was true of Dennis Machtel.  His sons, Dennis jr.and Keith, enjoyed every moment of time he spent with them on the field and when his daughter Lauren became eligible to play, she to received his attention as her coach.

When it came to lining the fields Dennis was a fanatic. Every field had to be just so.  He could often be found lining the fields by the light of his van, until he decided to hook up a battery and lights to the field liners so he could see in the dark. Yes he was very proud of the fields and we were very proud of the job he did.

Intramural referees are not always easy to find.  West Babylon developed a program for our youngsters that involved instruction in the laws of the game.  As many clubs had done we had modified the laws to fit the age of the players.  This was done under the tutelage of Dennis Machtel.  He made sure that all of the players interested in refereeing were notified and received instruction.  This carried forward when LISRA established the AR program.  He encouraged youth members of West Babylon to become part of the program.

Webster defines volunteer "as one who enters into or offers himself for a service of his own free will" that is Dennis Machtel.  He has helped to bring the quality of the components of the game to its highest point in West Babylon. We can only hope for more people of the quality of Dennis Machtel to step forward for the sake of the children.

Congratulations Dennis from all your friends at the  West Babylon Soccer Club!

West Babylon's Great Loss
December 3, 2007 - 12:43 PM --
It is with the heaviest of hearts that the South Shore Soccer Club of West Babylon reports the passing of Doug Hassell Sr. of Hassell Auto Body. Mr. Hassell had been one of the biggest supporters of the Soccer Club and his untimely passing will leave a huge void in the community that will not be filled anytime soon. The community of West Babylon lost an icon and an inspiring individual who gave without question and really cared about the community of West Babylon. He always opened his doors for several organizations to hold Fundraising Carwashes including many of the Soccer Club teams for many years. He did so with a kind and giving heart and always made sure that the kid's enjoyed themselves. For those that wish to offer condolences, the following Funeral Information has been provided:

The wake will be Monday, December 3rd and Tuesday, December 4th and burial will be on Wednesday, December 5th. He will be reposing at Boyd Spencer, Montauk Highway, Babylon. The hours are 2-4:30 P.M. and 7-9:30 P.M. The Funeral will be at 9:30 A.M. at St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Babylon on Wednesday, December 5th.

We are more than just Soccer
February 12, 2007  --
South Shore Soccer goes to Russia:
Last year, South Shore Soccer (West Babylon Soccer Club) donated Soccer shirts and equipment to orphans in Russia. Megan Gorman recently visited Russia to work with some of these orphans and sent some photos for the club to share. Many times we only look at the impact or significance our club has on our kids and our community when in fact our goal has always been to be so much more than just soccer.
