    Ason Dorrance, UNC Head Coach
    September 22, 2007  --   From: Kevin Gamble

    Subject: NAS Anson Dorrance Seminar - coaching youth

    Last night I attended a coaching seminar with Anson Dorrance. I
    thought some of his comments would make a good follow-on to
    our discussion on youth soccer. Just when I think I'm beginning
    to figure things out, someone comes along to change my mind. Here's
    some of the things he said:

    You shouldn't worry about winning until age 12. An
    over emphasis on winning can psychologically scar
    the children. Later in the seminar he mentioned
    age 14 as a good time to start working on the
    competitive aspects.

    Players shouldn't be given positions until age
    14. Before that you should rotate them through
    the defense, midfield, and front line. He said the
    quickest way to destroy a youth player is to
    put them in a defensive position. Actually, he
    described the assignment of positions as, "You kids try
    to stay behind the ball, you kids go somewhere in
    the middle, and you hang-out up front."

    As a coach you need to protect (from the other parents)
    the child that wants to hold the ball. He said
    that the single most important thing to develop in youth
    players is the ability to beat players 1v1. He said
    that Mia Hamm, who was on the National Team at age 15,
    didn't become a good passer until her junior year at
    UNC.

    (Somebody asked about the kid who tries to dribble through
    five opponents rather than pass to the wide-open teammate.
    His answer was, "I'd like to see the player try to beat
    two or three of them before giving it up.")

    Whenever he hears someone describe someone as a "team player"
    the red flags immediately go up. He said good passers are a
    time a dozen.

    Don't discourage ball chasing.

    Those are a few of the things. I know I've run the risk of taking
    his comments out of context. He spent a lot of time discussing
    fitness, and how to run economical practices. Lots on the value
    of short-sided games, and 1v1 work. Most of this we've discussed
    before. I thought the things above flew in the face of the conventional
    wisdom, that they were worth sharing, and that they might provoke
    some further dialog.

    It was a wonderfully informative evening. I wish you all could have
    been here. :)

    Kevin

    Whether You Think You Can or You Can't
    Whether You Think You Can or You Can't
    If you think you are beaten you are;
    If you think that you dare not, you don't;
    If you'd like to win, but you think you can't
    It's almost certain you won't.

    If you think you'll lose you've lost;
    For out in the world you'll find
    Success begins with a fellow's will
    It's all in the state of mind.

    If you think your are out-classed, you are;
    You've got to think high to rise;
    You've got to be sure of yourself before
    You can ever win a prize

    Life's battles don't always go
    To the stonger or faster man;
    But sooner or later the man who wins
    IS THE MAN WHO THINKS HE CAN.

    New Year's Wish
    Children's Soccer New Years Wish!

    "A Youth Soccer Poem - The Night before New Years"
    By Coach Brett Davis
    Arizona Youth Soccer Association

    Twas the Night before New Years, when all through the state,
    Not a player was stirring, and we bet you think that's great!
    Our uniforms were hung, and cleats polished with care,
    Our shin guards smelled funny, but the balls all had air.
    We children were nestled all snug in our beds,
    While visions of soccer games danced in our heads;
    The games were such fun; just youngsters and the ball,
    With no interference from adults at all.
    Then out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
    Just us kids having fun, SURPRISE, nothing's the matter;
    We ran and we laughed, each giving our best,
    We are the only attraction, everyone else is our guest.
    The moon up above gave the field such a glow
    Creating the feeling of magic for us down below;
    When what to our wandering eyes should appear,
    Only positive comments from our Coaches al l year!
    The referee was in the center so lively and quick,
    If he wore red instead of black, it could've been St. Nick;
    With patience and fairness the decisions then came;
    He whistled and pointed, never disrupting our game.
    The parents and fans were supportive when they cheered,
    It's all about us kids; that's for whom this game's geared;
    No arguing or complaining, no whining or screaming,
    Isn't it sad we only see this kind of game when we're dreaming?
    Now Referees! now Parents! now Coaches and Spectators,
    On Clubs! on Leagues! on Boards and Administrators,
    Lean over closely and lend us your ear,
    As children we speak softly, but this you must hear....
    On this night before New Years, before the rising of the sun,

    Please give us back the game, please give us back our fun.
    Oh thank you for listening, there's a new beginning in sight,
    Happy New Year to all, and thanks for doing what's right!
