2008 USFA Champions!
The West Virginia Lightning knocked off the Grand Rapids (MI) Thunder Saturday night, 9/13/08, to earn the title League Champions! A crowd of about 1,000 spectators gathered at Laidly Field to see their home-town Lightning wrap up an undefeated season at 12-0. The Lightning offense moved to ball well early in the game, but the drive stalled deep in Thunder territory due to an interception. With the offense out of sync, the defense held the Thunder to just two scores in the first half. The teams entered the locker rooms at the half with the Thunder leading 12-0. In the third quarter, the Lightning offense started clicking as they rolled off 28 unanswered points to take a 28-12 lead deep into the fourth quarter. The Thunder made a late-game surge by scoring a touchdown and a 2-point conversion, and were deep in Lightning territory with only seconds remaining, but the Lightning defense forced the Thunder to turn over the ball on downs. Final score, Lightning 28, Thunder 20!
