Braves Win Midget Title Thumping Rockets, 32-6

The Braves successfully defended it's championship in the Midget Football League when they defeated the Rockets in the deciding contest of a three-game series to decide this year's titleholder. The score was 32-6. Randolph Beverly again sparked the champions to their second straight title. Beverly, along with Jay Wilson, George Wilson and Carl Robinson, accounted for all of the tallies amassed by the winners while Tommy Mitchell sprinted better than 50 yards to chalk up his team's score.

Braves Beat Rockets, 13-6, Capture Midget Loop Title

Two sparkling runs by Donald Knights featured the Braves' 13-6 victory over the Rockets which decided the championship of the Midget Football League. The "Indians" now have captured the league title for the past three years. The new champions finished this year's gridiron race with a 5-0-1 record, being tied in their previous game with the Rockets. The Rockets went into the lead when, in the last play of the first half, Joe Longobardi heaved a 20-yard pass to Ernie Odgers in the end zone to tally 6 points for the Rockets. Starting the second half the Braves served notice that they had to be reckoned with. A sustained drive put the ball on the Rockets' 32-yard line where Don Knight, behind good blocking started right end for the distance and the first tally for the Indians. Not long after the first kick-off, the Braves gained possession of the pigskin and again Knight raced around his right end for a 43-yard dash to the goal. Richard Hubbard tallied the extra point on a plunge through the line.

Braves Repeat As Champion Of Midget Loop

By sporting a 4-0 record, the Braves captured the championship of the Midget Football League and by doing so retained the crown they won last year.

Dukes Capture Intermediate Loop Football Crown

Completing their season without a defeat and only one tie, the Dukes captured the championship of the Intermediate Football League by downing the last-place Panthers, 38-0. George Wilson led the scoring parade with two touchdowns for the winners while six-pointers were scored by Joe Gaines, Jay Wilson and Joe Freeman. Harry Bates and Jay Wilson went over for the conversions.

Red Devils Smash Crusaders To Win Midget Crown

The Red Devils captured the championship of the Midget Football League by defeating the Crusaders in their last game of the 1959 campaign by the overwhelming score of 32-7. The new champions replace the Braves who this year finished up the year's schedule with a 3-2-1 record. The Spitfires, who came along real strong during the last part of the season, defeated the Braves, 13-0, and completed their campaigning in the league tied with the Braves for second place.

Bulldogs Nip Dukes, 20-13

In the championship game, in which had to be postponed due to inclement weather, the Bulldogs rallied from behind to defeat the Dukes, 20-13. The Dukes scored first as Clarence Wilson broke loose around end to score. The Bulldogs came right back with Ronnie Borden ran in for a 70-yard run. Tom Mitchell converted the first of his two extra points. The Bulldogs scored again as Mitchell, back to pass, was rushed, but broke away and threw a bulls-eye 30 yards down field to Borden, who ran the remaining 20 yards into the end zone. Ken Heyward put the Dukes back into contention as he broke through the middle for a 12-yard run, moments before the half ended. In the third quarter, the Bulldogs served it up as Borden took a handoff from Mitchell and left the Dukes in the dust as he ran 34 yards for his third TD. Outstanding for the winning Bulldogs was Borden who also had an interception of a pass, running it back 45 yards to set up a TD. Paul Dicken did some speedy running through the middle, while Kenny Layre highlighted the game with two key interceptions. Leading the Dukes were Clarence Wilson and Kenny Heyward, who kept the losers in the game.

Middle Midget Team Remains Undefeated To Win Championship

While the Middle Township Panthers have been winning the Cape-Atlantic League championship, the Middle Midget League team has won the championship itself. The Middle Midgets went 6-0 this year. Louis Norton, Skippy Helrtold and Steve Fry, each scored a touchdown, Fry going 40-yards, in a 18-13 win over Stone Harbor. George Blanks got two TD's, Steve Fry one and Ted Simmerman got two extra points in the 20-6 win over Villas. George Blanks scored all three touchdowns and Ted Simmerman got the extra point against Crest, to win that won 19-0. Their last game of the year was against a big Avalon team which they beat, 7-6, completing six years without losing a game. The two teams fought through the first half over a muddy field without scoring. Then, in the third period quarterback George Davis handed off to halfback Steve Frye, and Frye went in to score. George Blanks got the extra point and the winning margin.

Cape May County Midget Football League

 

Court House Midgets Win Loop Title, 33-0

The Middle Township Boys Club Football team captured the 5-team league title with a one-sided 33-0 victory over the Villas midget team. The Middle team had it pretty much its own way in scoring 19 points in the second quarter and 7 in each of the last two. The boys also scored in the first period but it was nullified by a penalty. Both teams had gone through their schedules with other teams undefeated. The Court House team finished without having its goal line crossed in four games. The Villas team had been scored upon twice in league play. Other teams in the league this year were: West Cape May, Avalon and Stone Harbor. George Davis, halfback for the Court House team started off the scoring for the winners with a 14-yard end sweep on the first play of second period. Fullback George Blanks' plunge for the extra point was unsuccessful. Later in the same period Blanks went through tackle for a 9-yard score and again the extra point was thwarted by the Villas Boys. Halfback Gerry Hudgins wound up the scoring in the first half with an 18-yard left end run. Louis Goodroe ran his right end for 38 yards to score and Davies furnished the extra point with another plunge. Davies wound up the scoring for Court House with a 3-yard slant off his right tackle and Hudgins made it 33-0 with his extra point run.

Red Raiders Capture Midget Football Loop Championship

The Red Raiders captured the championship of the Wildwood Midget League when they defeated the Crusaders by a handy 19-0 score. An opening game double reverse with Mike Sciarra on the receiving, produced the first score for the winners. Mike went 65 yards for the counter. The winners were never headed with Jim Brittain passing to Tom Sawyer on a play good for 20 yards and the Raiders' second tally. A six-yard plunge by Brittain in the third quarter accounted for the final score for the winners. Brittain also accounted for the extra point of the contest 

 

Wildwood Intermediate Football League

 

Dukes Capture Intermediate Football League Crown, 27-0

In the best-of-three series, the Dukes swept the Untouchables 2 games to 0. In the first game, Dukes won by a score of 13-0. A 47-yard scamper for a touchdown by Melvin Kent in the second quarter opened the winner's scoring. Kent's tally was followed by Melvin Wilson's run for the extra point. In the fourth quarter, Don Knight got off a good 36-yard run to the loser's 4 where George Jackson took it over for the score to make it 13-0.

In the second game, the Dukes won 27-0. This year's champions got off early in the scoring column when Don Knight got off on a 47-yard scamper to score first. This was followed by Melvin Kent going for 16 yards on a pass play from Knight. Kent again countered with a 15-yard end run the score to 20-0 as the half ended. The onslaught continued when, in desperation, the losers started to throw the ball to get back into contention, but this maneuver back-fired with interceptions. Ronnie Webb stole one and scampered 20 yards for another Braves, score, with Melvin Wilson accounting for the point after touchdown. Meredith Campbell earlier went over for two extra points, running the final score 27-0.
