CSSE FUTSAL TOURNAMENT UNDERWAY

FACILITY LOCATED AT 530 SHEPPARD STREET

This week marks the beginning of a new direction for the soccer school as we host our first of what we hope to be an annual Spring break Futsal Tournament.  There are 26 teams playing in 6 divisions and the 4 on 4 game seems to be a big hit with all involved. The games are a packed house standing room only even with the new viewer benches installed.  All the games are being played in the evening with the exception of Friday and Saturday where games will be playing all day starting at 8:00 am Friday and 9:00 on Saturday.  Come out and watch a game and see Manitoba's first official futsal court and some of Manitoba's youngest futsal players take to the court.

Can Futsal Save Soccer in Canada

A user's photo.

Everyone knows the Canadian soccer system is broke. It’s no longer a question of how or why rather a question of what can we do to fix it? Truth is, there are hundreds of things that need to change and decades of commitment to that change before Canada can ever hope of being considered a soccer playing/loving nation as the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) would like. We need look no further than to our good neighbours to the south – the USA. Once in the same boat as Canada, they are now at least two decades ahead of us and although not yet considered a world soccer force they are certainly now the team to beat in CONCACAF and enjoy regular FIFA World Cup qualification. Their award of the 1994 FIFA World Cup sparked a revolution in US soccer, spurring the establishment of a domestic professional league with a number of D2 and D3 league options, forced a plan to deal with the not for profit vs for profit quandary, and inspired regular lucrative promotional events featuring Europe’s and South America’s biggest brands. All this has helped build an appetite and has sold the game to Americans allowing it to grow in the USA. So is their growth model the example for Canada to follow? No, it seems to be working for them and that’s great but it couldn’t possibly work here. The American soccer boom has its roots in massive commercial and financial investment. With 1/10th the population and significant geographic barriers, Canada simply doesn’t have the financial where with all to adopt an American style growth model. If Canada is to succeed at soccer, as it has in other sports, our growth and development models must be culturally driven and technically sound. When a sporting culture is not present, there must be a catalyst for change, a ground zero building block to move things forward. What if futsal was that catalyst? What if futsal was the building block to create both the cultural and technical changes needed to save soccer in Canada?

Hockey Culture
If you don’t like hockey you’re not Canadian! Just kidding, or am I? That answer literally depends on who you ask. The cultural connection to hockey in Canada is as strong as any nationalities connection with soccer. Canada’s dominance in hockey is no more a coincidence than Germany, Brazil and Spain’s dominance in soccer. Our collective cultural passion for hockey is aided by our international success but is rooted in the accessibility of the game at the most basic grassroots level. The vast majority of Canadians love of hockey does not stem from time playing in structured youth leagues at exorbitant costs of $5,000 – $20,000 per season. The average Canadian relates to hockey from the time they spent playing on Canada’s infinite supply of frozen water with their buddies at a cost even the most financially challenged can afford. And when the lakes, ponds and rivers are melted, we are constantly reminded of our hockey loving culture every time we pass by the endless supply of outdoor rinks and arenas in EVERY urban and rural community across Canada. I’ve been told youth hockey is not without its issues but at least the most basic grassroots need – accessibility – is not one of them.

Why Futsal?
Simple. It’s proven to develop some of the worlds most technically proficient players, the skills learned are completely transferable to the full field game and implementing a nationwide infrastructure program is very much feasible.

Essentially a small sided version of soccer, futsal in its many forms has helped develop many of the worlds greatest players and is an essential part of developmental programs in most of the world’s top footballing (soccer) nations. Played on a small surface, 5v5 (4 plus a goalkeeper), futsal is a very fast paced game. It forces players to think and play the game much quicker than full field soccer; this conditions the mind to play under the most demanding pressures the full field game has to offer. In addition to mental sharpness and technical superiority, futsal is proven to develop creativity, player confidence on the ball and perhaps most importantly a sound transitional game; an area the CSA’s Technical Director, Tony Fonseca, identifies as a key component to playing successful soccer. Unlike the full field and modern versions of indoor soccer, players have nowhere to hide in futsal. They must be involved in the play and are often forced to make decisions and attempt skills repetitiously that they might not be forced to perform in variants of indoor/outdoor soccer. Many recognize some of our greatest deficiencies competing internationally include poor speed of play and effective decision-making skills, futsal forces the development of these key aspects. It’s ironic the single best tool to help reverse our shortcomings is not well promoted in Canada.

Building A National Futsal Infrastructure Framework
Like the endless stream of outdoor hockey rinks and arenas across Canada, we could have futsal courts in every neighbourhood and at a fraction of the cost to build and maintain. This can be achieved through a combination of building some new and converting the countless dilapidated basketball and/or tennis courts in every neighbourhood into refreshed multi-use community facilities. We’ve all passed the empty, local sport specific tennis and basketball courts. Why must they be sport specific? Why can these facilities not be multi-use to accommodate basketball, futsal, tennis, volleyball and many more? They can and many such facilities already exist, just not in Winnipeg and I would venture too few elsewhere in Canada.

Some of the newer and/or better maintained, existing facilities could be converted for a mere few thousand dollars with simple surface marking upgrades and the installation of anchored futsal goals and basketball net upgrades. If one wanted to upgrade from the typical asphalt surface to a futsal certified, multi-use outdoor surface these can be purchased from a variety of vendors ranging from $10-$20/m^2. If you work out the cost vs area permutations for an official FIFA size futsal court, you can purchase an outdoor grade court for as little as $6,000 – $17,000. That price can be lowered significantly, perhaps even halved if the court is purchased for indoor installation.

Governments and municipalities all over North America seek “healthy living” initiatives. They also tend to own several parcels of land not viable for significant economic development but could prove perfect for the creation of new outdoor multi-use community facilities. With a quick internet search you can find some basic pricing of what a new tennis court installation costs. For all intents and purposes, this would be comparable to the size and expense of a multi-use court installation. The basic rate of a new court ranges from $50,000 – $100,000. Broken down as follows:

Clearing/grading the land: $15,000 – $25,000
Hard/Clay/Multi-sport surface installation: $25,000 – $75,000
Fencing & Lighting: $10,000 – $15,000

Multi-use outdoor court. Source: http://www.gridcourt.com/en/product.aspx?tid=5
Sounds expensive right? Wrong! This is a drop in the bucket compared to what most municipalities budget for recreation. To put things into perspective, let’s compare the expenses of refurbishing and building new futsal/multi-use courts to the price of building a community centre hockey arena. The new Seven Oaks Arena is a $20 Million dollar, double rink arena set to begin operation in Winnipeg’s North End this month. You read that correctly, $20 million dollars for one community centre arena in one neighbourhood of one Canadian city! Let’s see how far that would go towards building a national futsal infrastructure shall we?

New/well maintained existing community courts:

Assumptions: upgraded marking and new futsal goals/basketball nets required. No repair/upgrades to current surface.
Assumed upgrade cost: $5,000
Number of refurbished courts for $20M: 4,000
Dilapidated existing community courts:

Assumptions: upgraded markings and new futsal goals/basketball nets required. Current surface requires significant repair or replacement.
Assumed upgrade cost: $10,000 – $25,000
Number of refurbished courts for $20M: 800 – 2,000
Brand new court construction:

Assumptions: built on municipal owned land, no acquisition costs.
Assumed build cost: $50,000 – $100,000
Number of new multi-use courts for $20M: 200 – 400
Manitoba has a population (2014) of 1.2 million people, 65-70% of whom live in Winnipeg. To serve that population we have approximately 244 outdoor rinks and arenas across the province. Of those, 94 are arenas with 28 of those arenas in Winnipeg. Astonishingly, the budget to build just one arena, the new Seven Oaks Arena, could more than cover the total costs of building a futsal infrastructure capable of supporting the entire population of Manitoba! Granted not all arenas are as lavish as the new Seven Oaks Arena but todays replacement cost of a modern single rink, hockey arena ranges between $3 – 10 Million dollars! The International Ice Hockey Federation provides a guide for building basic hockey rink arenas and value their cost at 2.5 million euros or 3.4 million dollars Canadian. Ignoring the fact there are a number of multi-rink arenas in Manitoba already thus greatly increasing their value, our 94 arenas in this province have a combined value of $282,000,000 – $1 Billion! This could build 2,800 – 10,000 brand new multi-use courts or refurbish as many as 56,400 – 200,000 existing courts depending on current condition. Astonishingly, the value of Manitoba’s arenas alone could potentially finance an entire nationwide futsal infrastructure program!

Nickel and dime the futsal refurbishment and new construction cost estimates if you wish, inflate them by a ridiculous 100% even. The fact indisputably remains that the cost to implement a national futsal infrastructure program pales in comparison to what we already spend on hockey, but my oh my look how that investment has paid off.

Leading the Charge for Change
Some argue that we don’t produce enough talented players and the corrective action is to introduce clear player pathways and universal training methods. Few disagree these are necessary but it’s kind of like putting the horse before the cart. These measures don’t exactly grow and promote the game rather they improve the processes in place for current and future participants. No matter how clear the developmental path or how good the developmental methods, the size and quality of a player pool is culturally dependent.

As the official governing bodies of soccer across Canada, the CSA and its Provincial Member Associations are responsible for the promotion and growth of soccer in Canada. In order to achieve this, they need to establish a cultural connection to the game and make it freely accessible. They should be leading a charge to partner with federal, provincial and municipal governments as well as reaching out to other sporting agencies with similar objectives like Basketball Canada and/or Tennis Canada to pool resources and fund a national futsal/multi-use court infrastructure.

Closing
Cultural identification lends itself to sporting success, there is much proof of this in the world of sport. Reducing access constraints at the grassroots level is crucial to building a cultural identification with a sport. A national futsal infrastructure is economically feasible and capable of building the cultural and technical foundations of the developmental model necessary to grow the game of soccer in Canada. Tasked with the promotion and growth of soccer, our national and provincial governing bodies need to be the primary advocate for developing such an infrastructure framework while partnering with government and sporting bodies with similar vested interests to secure the funding necessary. Financial investment, player pathways and development models are all great and necessary initiatives in building a national sporting program but passion and cultural identification are required for building a successful program.

SAN MARINO CUP 2013

CSSE IMPACT BOYS

GAME 1 Vs Serbia

Team played well but came up short with opponent scoring on two set pieces.  One from a free kick and the other was a corner kick.

GAME 2 - Vs Venizula

The boys played very well today with a first half tie of 0-0.  Then off a corner kick Luka Z got a shot which deflected and Dylan finished it making it 1-0.  The momentum carried and the team put another in the back of the net with a break away goal by Robert.  Unfortunately the Venezuelans did not break and with hard pressure in the end of the second half they scored on a header from a free kick.

Worthy note was that at one point in the game the defense broke down and Kris came up big for the boys stealing a break away opportunity from the opponent.

GAME 3 - Vs USA

Game started on time 9:30 am with a temperature of 34 degrees.  Field conditions excellent.  One injured player "Ievan Maric"  Starting formation 4-3-3.  We scored in the 20th minute on a give and go on the left side and Dylan scored on the goal keepers left side scratching the far post.  We score again in the 26th minute on a combination play that started with Lucas VDB to Dylan. Dylan then dribbled a player split the center back and left defender leaving William B on a penetrating run down the top of the 18 yard box 1v1 with the keeper sending a driving low shot underneath the goal keepers hands. First half ends 2-0 in our favour.

Started the second half with the same intemsity playing a great possesion game combining all around the park.  Confidence on the field was high and after 25 consecutive passes between our defenders attackers and midfielders the was given to Dylan on the top of the box. Dylan took on 3 men on a flat run dribbled then took a powerful strike at the right top corner.  The goalie got his hands on it but not enough to stop the shot.  3-0 at the 45th minute.  Players still playing simple soccer even though the USA team was pressuring high but just how the players believe in themself after scoring the last goal it continued and in the 54th minute a middle distant shot rebounded to Gavin who dribbled a player, and took a second shot placing it through the defenders and into the net.

Final Score CSSE 4 - USA 0

GAME 4 - QUARTER FINALS Vs Misano Italy Team

Team played to perfection in the first half coming up with one goal in the 20th minute.  Zack N read the play and took advantage of a mistake made by the Italian keeper to his defender.  The always optimistic Zack battled head to head with the Italian Goal Keeper and after a scramble in front of the net Zack came out of no where to poke the ball into the back of the net. Played smart the rest of the first half and continured to pressure the Italian squad with caution.  Made a few changes and now played with 2 defensive midfielders.

Our defense held the Italian squad to perfection and the opponent became chippy making foul after foul.  The boys calm tempo and cool composure frustrated the Italian team who recieved 2 yellow cards.  They were diving in and around the box and forcing Kris to make a great save after which was given a yellow card himself which made no sense but a sigh of relief when no penalty kick was given.  Gavin substituted in as the enforcer to give the Italian defense a hard time and that he did sending the keeper to the ground to make a miraculous save only to have the ball rebound back to Dylan's feet who chipped the ball over the net.

Final score CSSE 1 - Italy Misano 0

GAME 5 - SEMI-FINALS Vs Serbia

Semi Final game vs the team we lost to in game 1 and they have not lost a game yet.  Weather cloudy and rain showers.  Late start due to previous semi final which went into overtime and penalty shots.  A few more bumps and bruises put Ievan back on the injured list to start off game 5.  Same formation 4-3-3 using again 2 defensive midfielders.  A cornor kick by Lucas VDB into the middle of the six yard box found Dylan waiting to head it into the net clipplng the crossbar before entering the net.  Stats given for first half: Shots - 7 / Shots on target - 4 / Saves - 2 / Crosses  -  3     Corners - 1 / Goals 1 in the 20th minute.

Second half CSSE came out to play!!!!!  Serbia matched the intensity pressing the CSSE defense.  The team defended well in the middle third of the field keeping the Serbians at a safe distance.  A quick turn over in the middle of the field gave the ball to Dylan who quickly shifted the momentum carrying the ball in a diagonal run beating a couple of players at full speed taking a middle distance shot at 35 yards which sailed over the 6 foot keeper into the net.

Final Score CSSE 2 - Serbia 0

GAME 6 - GOLD MEDAL GAME Vs USA White Plains Rockets

The gold medal went to CSSE I after a 1-1 full game tie, penalty kkicks had to determine a winner.  CSSE scored 4 out of 5 while USA scored only 3. Kris Aguiar came up big for the team saving 2.

CSSE Impact Tough lose in Canlan Men's Division One Finals

April 12th 2013 at 10:10 pm the CSSE Impact Men competed in the finals against the Boys.  It was a great game that had CSSE in the lead until the last 6 minutes of the game where a penalty shot was given to the opponents.  CSSE worked hard to take back the lead but it  just wasn't in the cards this year.  This being the first year for the team to compete indoor they had a great season.

Iceland ReyCup Tournament July 2011 - What an experience!

We are back from the land of fire and ice! An awesome trip was had by all, and we played some good soccer! (football)
We entered all our teams in the A divisions in order to get the best soccer experience, and we were playing against the top teams in the country. The style of Icelandic teams is similar to the English game, physical, fast and lots of touches on the ball. We had no idea what to expect from our CSSE kids, but they all stepped up and played great. This competition was pretty elite, everyone lives and breathes the game here. We were very well looked after by the tournament and the facilities were all top-notch. We have quite a few battered and bruised kids that came back, but they should be very proud of themselves and the way they played and represented CSSE and Canada! The tournament was amazing and the 3 teams all did well! The U16 girls came out with the best record at 3-3, coming home with 4th place overall. The U14 girls also played well with 2-2-1 record and 7th place overall. The U16 boy team had a hard run and played great, losing by one goal in most games, their record was 1-4. We saw some excellent scenery, breathtaking mountains and waterfalls and met some great people. All in all and excellent international trip! Can't wait for the next adventure!

Thunder Bay Chill Friendly Weekend a Huge Success!

Four CSSE Impact Academy teams travelled by Beaver Bus to Thunder Bay last weekend to play in a series of friendlies with the Thunder Bay Chill Academy teams. We were treated like gold and also took in 2 PDL games where the Chill swept both.

University of Manitoba Bisons soccer ID Camp

Congrats to the girls that went to the University Bisons ID camp this past weekend. Head Coach Chris Lewis was impressed with our girls and Chico commented that he was happy with their performance during the camp. Chico was also asked to be a guest coach and was involved with the evaluating process for the entire camp.

Coach Tonya passes her Provincial B License!!

Congratulations to Coach Tonya for passing her Provincial B license course! We are very proud of her and look forward to her coaching on the field!

Rey Cup in Iceland this July!

The organizers in Iceland are getting very excited for us to come to play in the Rey Cup this July and have made the announcement on their website.

Three teams from Canada Rey Cup
Boys and girls from attending Csse Impact to the game
No fewer than three teams come from Canada Rey Cup. In the case of both boys and stelpulið is clear that these teams will put a strong mark on the valley this summer. All the teams come from the same company, CSSE Impact.
The story has certainly kept a great relationship between Iceland and Canada, although these countries belong to two separate continent. It is great to be able to offer welcome boys and girls from the CSSE Imapact to the game on Rey Cup.

Although the result of Iceland and Canada are lacking often in knattspyrnuvellinum it is nonetheless an Icelander to check thoroughly the history of football cards in Canada at this time. Teitur Thordarson's coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps, a new company that participates in the professional division of U.S. soccer. This is the first year that Vancouver is in the league but it is worth mentioning that one of the principal owners of the team's basketball man knew, Steve Nash.

Teitur will now probably not on the sidelines of Rey Cup but it will be interesting to monitor these kids from Canada this summer.

Bemidji State University Spring Jamboree Tournament

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Out of an eight team field at the 2011 BSU Soccer Spring Invitational the Manitoba Blizzard, a team comprised of the top U-17 soccer players in Manitoba, arose as the tournament champions edging the BSU Alumni team in a tiebreaker for the top spot. News Release
April 2011
RE: Coach Pedro Hernandez

After several years of dedicated coaching with the CSSE School, Coach Pedro Hernandez has decided it is time for a change. Effective immediately, Pedro will not be coaching with CSSE.
Pedro started with the school in 2008 and has been a great asset to the school for the past 3 consecutive years. Pedro has seen many accomplishments during his time with us, including attaining higher coaching licenses along with being a part of all the successes the school has had over the years. One of the things we will miss the most is his dedication to working with our youth. He has mentored the players on and off the field. A big THANK YOU and farewell from our soccer family. We wish him the best in his future endeavors and we are sure that our paths will cross again.

Bye Coach Pedro

NDSU Spring Tournament Success!

The U17 Academy girls showcase team arrived in Fargo on Friday night to play in the NDSU Spring Tournament. This tournament was an invitation-only event, with 5 different US colleges and universities attending. CSSE was the only team not affiliated with a US school.

There were 14 teams in the tournament, divided into 4 pools. The CSSE girls had 3 games to get through before the elimination rounds. The girls tied the first game 2-2, tied the second game 2-2 and then lost 3-1 in their final round robin game. In the elimination game, the score was tied 1-1 at full time and went straight to penalty kicks. Kaelyn and Coralee scored for CSSE and Jazz made an amazing save on the opponents first PK. The opponents needed to score and did on their second shot. They missed their 3rd shot and we were awarded the win! on to the quarterfinals.

The quarterfinals were a chance to redeem ourselves as we had to re-match our loss earlier in the day against Minot State University. We won this game 2-1. On to the semis!

The semifinal games were the last 4 teams standing. CSSE was one of those teams along with NDSU Yellow, NDSU Green and NDSU Alumni.

The CSSE girls played great in the semi, losing to NDSU Yellow by a score of 5-0. This was a great result against a NCAA Division 1 team that had beat the other teams by scores of 8-0, 9-1 etc.

Good job Chicas!! Very proud of you all. We also received many compliments from all coaches there and a few were interested in our players.

Congratulations to the CSSE Girls High School Team - Champions!

The Chicas High School team played the Bustos Academy girls Thursday March 24th for the Canlan Indoor High School title. The season games between the 2 teams have gone either way, so this was bound to be a great matchup. The girls did not disappoint, playing a great game by both teams. The Chicas went down 2-1 at the half, then picked up their socks and scored 2 goals in the second to hold on for the 3-2 win. Jazz was stellar in net for the second half, shutting out some great shots from the opposing girls.
Congratulations girls! Well-deserved win!

Congratulations to the CSSE high school boys team - Champions!

The high school boys team played a great game today and won the championship with a win over the Bustos Academy team by a score of 6-1. The boys had to first get through their semi final against Sisler High School last week and came out to play hard today.

Congratulations on a great season boys!

Canlan finals this weekend!

Canlan winter league finals took place this weekend and it was a great couple of days of close games. The U11 and U15 finals took place on Saturday and the U13 and U17 games happened on Sunday. The U15 game between the Dynamo and Red Bulls went to double overtime after a 5-5 tie in regular time. The Dynamo won the game, scoring 2 goals in the second overtime period. The U13 final was a classic matchup between the Chica-Chicas and the Lightening, with the girls taking the game with a close 3-2 score. The U17 finals was a hard hitting, fast, talented game against the Impact and the NE Saints. The 1st period saw no scoring but the score opened up in the second period, the impact struck first but the saints came back right away. The score ended 3-1 for the impact after the saints pulled their goalie to try to even the score. The Impact scored an empty netter with 30 seconds left. great games by all!

Omaha FC 2011 Boys Showcase Results

First game done. Lost 3-0 to a tough, physical team from Iowa. The boys were a bit nervous and gave the ball away in the first half. Second half was better with more passing. Recruiting class is next and then second game at 3pm. Let's go boys!!!!

Tough second game today...hopefully the boys take to heart the lessons learned today and play better tomorrow. This is a great learning experience...the level of competition is very high here, sets the bar really high for next year!

Much better game this morning! The boys played with heart and passion, still a loss, but against the best team here of 92's and 93's. Good job boys!

Omaha FC 2011 Girls Showcase Results

The CSSE U17 girls showcase team was in Omaha, Nebraska last weekend for the Omaha FC College Showcase Tournament. The girls did very well and we are excited to share our results with all of you! Here is a copy of the daily updates:

1. In Omaha, Nebraska with the U17 girls showcase team. Early start tomorrow with a 7:30am game vs Colorado Storm u17. Will keep you updated as we go! Go CSSE go!!
2. Great start to the day! Early wakeup call and the first game of the tournament. CSSE girls showed their superior teamwork and won the game vs Colorado Storm U17/18 girls. The score was 2-1 for us, goals from Kaelyn and Selina. The more important part was that we enjoyed about 80% of the possession in the first half, and about 60% in the second. On to the next game at 4:15pm today!
3. Second game of the day was a bit harder, a very physical team from Minnesota (Burnsville Fire) took an early lead, but our girls never gave up and we tied the game from a nice shot by Kaelyn from about 30 yards out. The game ended on a 1-1 tie. Great passing game from the Chicas! Multiple interest from different schools as well...!!!!!
4. Final day of the tourney. Game vs Dakota Alliance U18's. Chicas came out to play and we won 2-0. First goal from Selina with a beautiful shot from the hard angle. Second goal came from Megan with a beauty from about 40 yards out, a rocket in the top corner! Excellent tournament for all!
5. We have been told that the consensus from all the scouts is that we are the best playing team here. They all loved to watch our girls play. We have scouts from 40 different schools here this weekend. Nice!!!! Chico is very proud.

Game 1 - 7:30am Saturday vs Colorado Storm U17's win 2-1 - goals from Selina and Kaelyn

Game 2 - 4:15pm Saturday vs Burnsville Fire U17's tie 1-1 – goal from Kaelyn
(note* - Burnsville Fire is the Minnesota state champion!)

Game 3 - 9:15am Sunday vs Dakota Alliance U18's win 2-0 – goals from Selina and Megan

We approached a lot of scouts to give them our info and to ask what they thought of our team, the overwhelming response was that we have great players and are a fantastic team. We received interest in quite a few players from Div 1, Div 2 and Div 3 schools as well as NAIA. !!!!!!!
The recruiting class with Becky from Omaha FC was a great experience for all the girls and we all learned quite a lot.

Toronto Teams

SAAC Friendly Update #3 - Sunday

Sunday Games - last day in Toronto, cloudy and drizzling. The U16 boys were on first today against the U16 ANB Academy team. The boys played tough but just couldn't break through the well-organized team. The score was 6-0 for ANB. The U16 girls were next and played against the ANB U14 boys team. This team was also very well organized and played fast soccer. The girls had a hard time getting to the ball and lost the game. The U13 Little Chicas were up to play against the ANB Select U13 girls. The game was a close one, but our girls played well and won the game 3-2.

Oh yea, we were sitting on the front row (beside the net)at the TFC game and were about 20 feet away from the players!

SAAC Friendly Update #2 - Saturday

Saturday Games - the day started out raining and cloudy and only got worse from there...the U16 boys played first and played an excellent, competitive game against Bryst Academy U16's. The game was tied 0-0 at half and ended with a 2-0 loss. The U16 Chicas had to play a scrambled team made up of various players when the other team was a no-show. The girls played very well and dominated the game, lots of goals were scored and Chico used the session as a great teaching period. The girls won. The day finished with the Little Chicas taking on a very good club team from the area and played well. They lost 4-1.

Everyone is being very nice and many great contacts and friends are being made this weekend. We are now off to the Toronto FC vs. LA Galaxy game at BMO field!!!! Exciting stuff.

SAAC Friendly - Toronto Update

Friday Games - we played at the beautiful McMaster University new turf field and were hosted by DPSoccer. The evening started with the Little Chicas taking the field and dominating the competition with a score of 4-0. The second game was the Chicas, playing the DPS U16 girls. Our girls fought hard and played excellent possession soccer, winning the game by a score of 3-2. The final game of the evening was the Impact U16 boys taking on the U17 DPS Showcase team. The boys fought hard, but were out hustled and out muscled to the ball. The end result was a 7-1 loss.

Many thanks to the folks at DPSoccer for hosting us and providing an excellent facility and water and pizza for our groups. It was an excellent visit!! They were impressed with our athletes and we have made plans for them to visit us in the near future.

Copa Monterrey - March 2010

Well we are back home! The boys did an excellent job in Monterrey and came home with 2nd place in the second division. (4th place)

We ended the round robin in 3rd place with a record of 4 wins and 1 loss. We then had to play a team from Mexico City for 3rd place. This team was out for revenge as we had beaten them 2-1 in the round robin, and they came out hard. We lost this game 4-2.

There were 8 teams in our category and we did not get to play the 2 teams that ended up in 1st and 2nd place (too bad - maybe we would have beaten them!)

A very successful trip by all accounts - we are very proud of the boys.
We were invited back next year by the tournament organizers, they were impressed by our players and how respectful they were. A very well run 11v11 tournament.

Way to go CSSE!!

Omaha FC College Showcase Results

Game 1 - WIN 2-1 The boys all played very well against a big team from Colorado. After the game, 6 boys were immediately identified and given college brochures and booklets from 3 colleges.

Game 2 - WIN 6-2 The boys played even better this afternoon against the 91/92 home team from Omaha FC (all-star team). After the game, 3 more colleges/universities expressed interest in seven of the kids.

Game 3 - WIN 3-2 The early game time wasn't the best for the boys, but they quickly woke up when the other team was very fast and pressured the boys quickly. The second half of the game was very quick with some nice passing and majority of possesion by the CSSE team.

The "buzz" around the complex is about our boys, which is very nice to hear, all the organizers and scouts in attendance are very impressed with all the kids. There were 22 official scouts in attendance from 22 different colleges/universities. All levels of athletics were represented including NCAA Div 1 - 2 and 3, NIAC and IIAC schools.

The CSSE squad was the only team to win all 3 of their games.

Chico is very proud to announce that 10 out of the 15 boys have been identified by multiple schools.

CSSE Makes the News!

Soccer school joins alliance
By Shane Gibson
A soccer school started by a Stonewall
man has been accepted as an associate
member of the Soccer Academy Alliance
Canada (SAAC).
Victor “Chico” Andrade, both technical
director and president of Chico’s School of
Soccer Excellence (CSSE) run out of the
Highlander Four Rinks Ice Sports Centre in
Winnipeg, learned of the honour late last
month.
“We’re extremely excited with this affiliation
— it’s a great thing for soccer in
Manitoba,” said Andrade, adding his school
is the only in the province to receive SAAC
membership. “There are really high standards
to become a member... it’s not easy to
get in, so this is really huge for us.”
The SAAC is a non-profit organization
formed in 2005 in Ontario with the mission
to develop world class soccer players by
providing members with best-in-class training,
facilities and competition. Since its
start the SAAC has accredited eight member
schools in Ontario and one in British
Columbia. The organization’s operations
manager, Lino Terra is happy to see the
association spread into Manitoba. “SAAC is excited to add Chico’s School
of Soccer Excellence to our membership, which brings our representation to a third Canadian Province,” said Terra in a press release touting CSSE’s acceptance. “We hope to one day be able to bring the model that has been successful in southern Ontario across the entire country.”
Chico’s School of Soccer Excellence currently has about 80 participants, made up of both boys and girls between the ages of 11-16, and was started in 2002 to serve the needs of top-level players in Manitoba. The school provides additional training to raise a player’s level of play to an even higher standard and obtain athletic scholarships. Andrade, who holds a national “B” coaching license, and is a former Provincial Team
coach, says membership with the SAAC will be incredibly beneficial for his school in helping it’s participants further their soccer careers.
“This gives our players the chance to be recognized at colleges, universities and if they want to be professionals it’ll help promote
them to the highest level that their ability can take them,” he explains. “Before we had to go to showcases and prove ourselves,
but now, with SAAC accreditation everyone will know the quality of our players before we even get there. “We’ll have no troubles playing the other
academies — this opens many more doors for us.”
Students with CSSE travel around the world to compete in tournaments and showcase their skills every year, and this January and February the school will sending a number of their participants to a showcase in Nebraska, featuring 28 teams playing each other in front of 75 college scouts.
The CSSE runs 5-6 times a week all year round and regularly holds try-outs for new students. To learn more about the school’s soccer program contact Andrade at 467- 7715.

Canada Summer Games 2009

Local soccer star headed east
Kyle Andrade off to Canada Summer Games
Posted By Shane Gibson
Posted 9 days ago

Kyle Andrade is headed to the 2009 Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island. A young soccer phenom from Stonewall has been given the chance to show the rest of the Canada his passion for the beautiful game. Kyle Andrade has been named to the U19 soccer team that will represent Manitoba at the 2009 Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island later this summer.

The seventeen-year-old, who has been playing soccer his “whole life”, says he wasn’t all that surprised to learn he would be on the provincial team. “I’ve actually been playing well lately, and I just had a good feeling about it,” he explained. “Everything has been clicking really well with the team, and things are just working out really well with us.”

Andrade has worked incredibly hard to get to this point, and currently plays on three different soccer teams. It’s one of those teams, which regularly plays against the Winnipeg mens league teams, that will be representing Manitoba at the games.

Andrade and the Canada Summer Games team have been practicing and playing together since bringing home a gold medal from the 2007 Western Canada Games. The team has also medaled twice in the past two years at the National Sports Centre Cup in Minneapolis, and Andrade says he’s confident the team will medal again at the summer games. “We were the first (Manitoba) team to win the gold when we competed in the Westerns, so I guess there is some expectation for us to do the same at the Canada Summer Games,” said Andrade. “I think we’ll come home with at least a bronze medal.”

Representing Manitoba on the soccer pitch runs in the family for Andrade, who’s father, Victor Andrade, also played for the province in the same competition during the 1980s. “It feels kind of cool knowing that my dad has had the same experience as well,” said Andrade. “From what he tells me it was a huge tournament 20 years ago, so it’s going to be even bigger now.” Victor, who runs Chico’s School of Soccer Excellence in Winnipeg, says he’s happy to see his son following in his own footsteps. “We’re so proud of him,” he said. “He’s worked very, very hard to be where he is at, and it takes a lot of effort, dedication and a lot of hours to get to his level.”

The hard work Andrade has put in to soccer over the years includes training at Academy Sporting, a prestigious soccer school in Portugal, and spending eight months in Spain playing soccer for the Sevilla under-14-15 team in 2007. Andrade, who will graduate from SCI next year, has already received attention from US post-secondary schools interested in giving him scholarships to play at their schools, and hopes to become a professional soccer player after he graduates. He says he’s excited to both play at the Canada Summer Games, and talk to the many other athletes who will be at the games. “We’ll get to see a lot of other athletes, because it’s not just for soccer, we can watch volleyball basketball and everything else,” he said. “It’s a lot of different sports, and it’ll be a good experience to watch and talk to the other athletes who have gone through similar experiences to make it to this kind of event.”

Andrade and the Manitoba Canada Summer Games team will compete in the elite U19 skill bracket at the Canada Summer Games starting on Aug. 22.
