East Cobb Lightning strikes late to win Georgia State Championship
By David Poteet
The 12-U East Cobb Lightning took the long way home to win the United States Travel Ball Association’s Georgia State Championship at Heritage Park in Dalton May 31.
After losing its first three games in the tournament May 30, the Lightning came back with three victories the next day to claim the first-place trophy. The final game was a 5-4 win over the Georgia Tribe, out of Dalton.
“The boys performed extremely well under immense pressure after two long days of baseball with early starts covering six games in heat against the best travel teams in the state and country,” said Lightning Head Coach Scott Weiss, whose record was 26-11 after the tournament. “Emotionally, it was difficult too, after drawing a pool in which 3 of the 4 teams all won the championship in their respective brackets.”
Weiss also praised the parents of his players.
“I'm very proud,” Weiss said. “I’m proud of everyone involved; for their support, involvement and world-class behavior behind the screen. This was a total Lightning team effort.”
The Lightning are now preparing for a trip to play in the Cooperstown Tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y. beginning June 12.
