Who/Where is Rome?

How does the smallest community in the Land O’ Lakes survive much less field a championship team? The Rome Raiders represent the Southwestern Division in the LOL grand championship playoffs this year. With a population of 640 how do they thrive while Kenosha, Franklin, Delavan and Mukwonago fold? What is their secret?

After being involved with the LOL for almost forty years I think I have an idea. First, they have great support from their fans and community businesses as evidenced by the ads on their outfield fence. Second, they have alumni who do not disappear when they are done playing. Former players Kent Hoffman and Denise Linse are instrumental in raising money, keeping the field in tip top shape and announcing games among other things. And third, they have used the pick system prudently to add to their local talent.

If you ever have a chance, catch a Raiders game. Their field is on Highway F south of Interstate 94 in eastern Jefferson County is a stone's throw from the Mill Pond. Lefties will salivate at the short porch. Step up to the log cabin concession stand and enjoy some great ballpark food and a cold beverage. Take in the sites and sounds of what Land O’ Lakes baseball is all about. On Saturday August 25, Rome hosted their first Grand Championship game in 55 years against the Brookfield Bulldogs. Hope to see you there!
