Board President:
Sets the overall direction for the League and provides leadership and oversight of the other Board members and Committee members. Responsible for ensuring that the Board and League operates according to our League Bylaws and our Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth Charter. Serves as primary League representative with District and Headquarters executives, Township officials, and Legal consultants. Must attend League, District, and Township meetings year-round, as well as interact with player families and volunteers at all age levels. Must be willing and able to make difficult decisions that balance the best interests of our players and programs, while ensuring the long-term viability of our League, and protect the integrity of the MBL, Cal Ripken, and Babe Ruth brands.
Vice President – League Operations:
Provides specific focus on league operations working closely with the President on day-to-day league operations. Assist the President with conducting the affairs of the local league and assist with executing baseball programs on the field and policies off the field. Assist the President with other tasks deemed necessary.
Vice President – Recreational Baseball (ages 4-18):
Provides oversight and supervision of League Directors, Managers, and Coaches. Responsible for the coordination of Rec season drafts and game scheduling. Responsible for the recruitment and evaluation of team Managers and Coaches. Ensures that all rules-of-play are current, provide the right balance of fairness, player growth, and safety, and are enforced by the League Directors throughout the season. Partner with the VP of League Operations and VP of Player Registration to help recruit new players to our programs and ensure existing players return.
Vice President – Travel & Tournaments:
Provides oversight and supervision of our Travel Baseball program across all age groups (8+) for our two official Travel seasons: Spring (“Sunday only”) and Summer (note: Summer teams may also choose to enter Fall tournaments, which may also require coordination). Responsible for the coordination of team tryouts, player evaluations, organization of team, and player drafts. Leads the Travel Selection Committee and makes sure all necessary information has been collected and distributed to all Travel Committee Members. Responsible for the recruitment and evaluation of team Managers and Coaches. Coordinates Travel Team practice schedules in cooperation with the VP of Recreational Baseball. Responsible for the coordination of our own annual tournament, The John Covino Invitational, including forming and leading a Tournament Committee to assist in the recruitment of teams, scheduling of games, and coordination of volunteers. Coordinate with the VP of Finance to establish budget, set fees, and monitor expenses.
Vice President – Umpires:
Responsible for the recruitment, training, scheduling, supervision, and payment of Umpires for our Spring and Fall Rec seasons, Spring and Summer Travel seasons (home games), Covino Tournament, and for certain special events – such as Special Olympics of New Jersey – hosted by MBL. Partners with the VP of Finance to set Umpire fees prior to the beginning of the baseball season and to ensure we operate within budget.
Vice President – Maintenance (Fields & Facilities):
Responsible for managing the maintenance of the McKnight Baseball Complex fields and facilities. Negotiate MBL-friendly lease and contact arrangements. Interface with contracted maintenance companies, utilities, and vendors. Organize Complex openings and closings and recruit volunteer participation. Lead any large scale maintenance or capital investment efforts that impact the physical baseball footprint. Responsible for assessing game-day weather-forecasts and field-conditions to ensure player safety.
Vice President – Administration:
Responsible for the purchasing of merchandise, equipment, uniforms, trophies, and supplies. Coordinates the inventory, distribution, and collection of team equipment. Schedule and coordinate annual Parent Night, Opening Day, and Photo Day events.
Vice President – Finance (Treasurer):
Responsible for management of the financial health and compliance of the League, including establishing an annual capital and operating (expense) budgets, establishing fees for Rec and Travel programs, paying bills, tracking revenue and expenses, and managing accounting records (using QuickBooks). Partner with other Board and Committee members to ensure we negotiate the best prices for products and services. Coordinate our annual tax return – and, if necessary, respond to any audit requests - with our CPA.
Vice President – Marketing:
Responsible for raising community-wide awareness of the League, League activities, and programs, and raising revenue from sources other than registration fees, including charitable donations, sponsorships, and signage. Activities include reaching out to local businesses and engaging parent employers to sponsor rec-team uniforms, purchase home-run fence, scoreboard, and dugout signage, and participate in community-wide events such as Opening Day, Championship Day, Patriot Night and Outdoor Movie Night. Partner with VP of Player Registration on advertising League events in local press, schools, and community businesses. Partner with Board Secretary on coordinating Social Media campaigns for vendor/sponsors.
Vice President – Special Events:
Responsible for the coordination of large scale fundraising and community events including Parent Night, Opening Day, Championship Day, Applebee’s Breakfast, Mother’s Day Flower Sale, Patriot Night, Movie Night, and any other such activities agreed to by the Board. Assist the VP of Marketing on marketing and advertising the league into the community. This role may also assume other tasks as directed by the Board President.
Vice President – Player Registration:
Responsible for coordinating Spring and Fall Rec registration activities including tracking and reporting. Partners with the VP of Marketing on advertising and communications. Partners with the VPs of Recreational Baseball, and Travel/Tournaments, League Directors, and Team Managers to actively recruit current and former players and seek potential new players. Develop creative ways to promote player retention and “customer satisfaction” throughout the baseball season. Coordinate post-season player/parent and Managers/Coaches surveys.
Board Secretary:
Coordinate all Board meetings, record and distribute meeting minutes, and track action items. Maintain League web site, bylaws, documents, records, general administration, and security. Coordinate annual Board election process including public announcements, voting, and reporting results as per bylaws. Coordinate annual background checks of all Board members, Managers, Coaches, and volunteers as per Babe Ruth Baseball policy. Partner with League President in providing public relations oversight.
Past President:
Provide current Board President and Board members with institutional knowledge and historical context of League activities. Assist in other Board functions and activities as/where needed.
