Knights win back-to-back championships

The New Lowell Knights won the North Dufferin Baseball League senior championship Sunday winning Game 6, 3-1 over the Bolton Brewers. The Knights win defended their 2022 title.

The best-of-seven series had the Knights up 3-1 heading into the weekend but the resilient Bolton Brewers took an 8-2 win Saturday afternoon to force Game 6.

Bolton opened Game 5 with a single run in the first inning swiftly followed by the Knights plating two runs in their half when Sid Beelen hit a two-run shot.

The strong offense of the Brewers continued in the second inning when John Hutchinson hit a two run homer. A five-run fifth inning forced Knights' pitcher Nick Hodgson from the game.

Hutchinson also chipped in with a single as did Brett Chater, Chris Volkey, Chris Fafalios, Amin Juarez, and Carter Burnside.

New Lowell hits went to Beelen with the homer, Steve Bowman with a double and single, Brandon Norrie with two singles and lone hits from Tanner Zeggil and Mack Morrish.

Hodgson pitched four and two-third innings for the Knights, giving up eight runs on six hits, walked four, hit one batter, and struck out three.

Steve Baldry came in for relief, finishing the game with one hit and four strikeouts.

Victor Moguel toed the rubber for Bolton, pitching all seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, one walk, while striking out two batters.

On Sunday, the Brewers scored their only run in the first inning, before Norrie, in one of his best performances of the year, retired six batters and allowed five hits with one walk over his seven innings of work.

New Lowell scored a run in the fourth to tie the game and in the sixth inning Dale Lightheart singled and eventually scored from second base on a Zeggil double.

The third run came in the top of the seventh when Nic Guthrie crossed the plate during a Bolton errant throw to first base.

The Knights out-hit the Brewers with Bowman and Brett Elliott hitting two singles, Zeggil's double, and singles from Jake Nicholson, Chris Greer, Beelen, and Lightheart.

Bolton veteran player and coach Mike Wallace hit two singles for the losing side. Chater hit a double and Stephen Warden and Juarez chipped in with singles.

Aaron Dzib took the loss for the Brewers as he pitched all seven innings, gave up three runs on nine hits, walked two and hit two batters. He fanned seven Knights.

During a post-game presentation, Bowman was named the most valuable player of the playoffs and received the Paul Carruthers Memorial Award from his coach Peter Kinghan.

League secretary Scott Anderson was on hand to present the Strother Cup to Nicholson, Norrie, and Jesse McIntyre of the Knights.

The New Lowell Knights have taken a 3-1 series lead over the Bolton Brewers winning Game 3, 4-1 and Game 4, 4-3 on the weekend in the North Dufferin Baseball League championship.

Saturday's contest, played in Bolton, started with the Brewers plating a run in the first inning, but the Knights scored two in the third followed by a run in each of the fourth and fifth frames to win the game.

Brandon Norrie threw a gem for the Knights and was backed by teammates with solid defensive plays that restricted the Brewers offense.

The Brewers were limited to three singles from Mike Wallace, Carter Burnside and Aaron Dzib.

The Knights' Steve Bowman, Brett Elliott, and Chris Greer hit doubles, singles from Norrie and Steve Baldry and a pair of singles from veteran Todd Patton.

Trent Barwick pitched all seven innings for the Brewers giving up four runs on seven hits, two walks and had two strikeouts.

Norrie also pitched all seven for the Knights, allowing one run on three hits, three walks, one hit batter, and five strikeouts.

Game 4 on Sunday in New Lowell opened with a three run inning for the Knights as leadoff batter Steve Bowman hit a homer on the first pitch followed by a Patton two-run shot in the cleanup spot.

Brewers' hurler Dzib kept the New Lowell bats at bay for the remainder of the game allowing his battery mates to score two runs in the fifth and a single in the sixth to tie the game.

With the game still tied after seven innings, the teams entered extra innings where the Knights capitalized on an errant throw to first base in a double play attempt, scoring Greer from third base to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth.

Bolton managed seven hits including a double and two singles from Brett Chater, two singles from Stephen Warden, and singles from Nathan Drury and Wallace.

Bowman led the Knights with a homer and two singles, Patton with his home run, Chris Rettie and Greer hitting two singles, and two more hits from Jake Nicholson and Baldry.

New Lowell started ace Nick Hodgson who pitched nine innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, three walks, hit one batter, and had two strikeouts.

Dzib pitched eight innings for the Brewers, giving up three runs on nine hits, one walk and five strikeouts.

The winning run was charged to Chater who entered in the eighth frame in relief. He gave up one hit, one walk and had one strikeout.

The next game is Saturday in New Lowell, where the Knights can claim a second-straight title. A Brewers win forces Game 6 on Sunday in Bolton followed by a Game 7 double-header if required.

The Bolton Brewers and New Lowell Knights split the first two games of the Strother Cup final on the weekend in North Dufferin Baseball League action.

New Lowell took a 4-3 win in eight innings for Game 1, while the Brewers hammered the Knights 12-0 in the second game.

The Knights scored early in Game 1 with two runs crossing the plate in the first, followed by a third run in the second frame.

It wasn't until the fifth inning the Brewers got on the scoreboard with a lone run, followed by another run in the sixth and the tying run in the seventh.

Heading into extra innings, New Lowell plated the winning run and held the Brewers in their half of the eighth inning.

Brandon Norrie and Sid Beelen both hit two singles and Dale Lightheart chipped in with one for the Knights.

Mike Wallace had two singles for the Brewers while teammates Brett Chater, Chris Fafalios, Stephen Warden, Amin Juarez and John Hutchinson each singled.

New Lowell's ace Nick Hodgson toed the rubber for all eight innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, walking four, and striking out four.

Aaron Dzib pitched for Bolton giving up four runs on five hits, walking seven, hitting one batter, and fanning six.

In Game 2 the Brewers started with the long-ball to get runs early, including a solo shot from Chater and Drew Volkey. Warden hit a homer in the sixth inning.

Bolton plated a lone run in the second frame and up until the end of the sixth it remained a 4-0 game.

The seventh inning saw the Knights fall apart while the Brewers scored eight more runs.

Bolton outhit New Lowell 16-4. Chater led the charge hitting a homer and two singles with Volkey and Warden each hitting a home run and single. Logan Hart and Greg Keenan hit two singles and Fafalios, Hutchinson, Josh Hickey, Nathan Drury, and Mike Bonsignore all singled for the winning side.

Steve Bowman hit a single and double and Beelen and Brett Elliott hit a single for New Lowell.

Bolton's Victor Moguel silenced the New Lowell bats with four hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts over his complete game on the hill.

Steve Baldry started on the mound for New Lowell and over six innings allowed six runs on ten hits, one walk and two strikeouts. He started the seventh inning but was relieved after two batters when Nic Guthrie entered.

Guthrie pitched three batters, giving up three runs on two hits and a walk before he was relieved.

Jake Nicholson pitched the remainder of the game giving up three runs on four hits, walking one and fanning two.

The series resumes next Saturday in Bolton at 1 p.m. and then to New Lowell for 1 p.m. on Sunday in the best of seven series.




Quarter-final action for Rangers

September 4, 2023

Baseball Ontario's senior provincial championship tournaments were held over the weekend with seven North Dufferin teams participating.

The Ivy Rangers at the 'A' championships in Thorold made it to the quarter-finals, losing the game 8-6 against a strong Niagara Falls team.

The Rangers opened the weekend with a decisive 8-0 win over Mitchell and in Game 2 met league rival Barrie Angels. The Rangers topped the Angels 4-2. Round three action saw Ivy take on Beamsville and after being up 3-0, lost the contest 4-3.

The loss meant another game against Barrie, with the Rangers winning 8-1 to advance to the quarter-final.

Barrie picked up a 5-2 first game win over Woodslee, met Ivy for Game 2 and stayed alive in Game 3 with a 3-1 victory over Clarington, before bowing out in the game against Ivy.

It was a disappointing weekend for the New Lowell Knights going out in two games at the 'AA' championships. They lost 11-9 to Whitby and 6-4 to Fort Erie.

Both the Orillia Majors and Lisle Astros made it to round three at the 'B' provincials in Petrolia.

The Majors lost their first contest 16-0 to Leamington, bounced back with a 7-6 win over Petrolia in Game 2, and took a second loss in a game with Lucan 10-5.

Lisle defeated Lucan 14-5 in opening action and then lost a close 6-5 battle to Wyoming before losing to Milton 4-2.

The Creemore Padres and Owen Sound Baysox met for their first game at the 'C' tournament in Port Hope. In an eight-inning game the Padres took a 10-9 win. Owen Sound was knocked out the following game losing to Essex 3-0.

Creemore suffered a loss in their second game to Port Lambton 12-2 and ended the tourney with a close 5-4 loss to Port Dover.

Provincial championships this weekend

Senior baseball provincial championships are set for the long weekend across the province with seven North Dufferin teams in the hunt for a title.

The New Lowell Knights, Barrie Angels, Ivy Rangers, Orillia Majors, Lisle Astros, Creemore Padres and Owen Sound Baysox will attend one of four championship tournaments.

The Knights head to the five-team 'AA' tournament in Vaughan where they meet Whitby for their first game on Friday at 6 p.m.

Barrie and Ivy are at the 'A' championships in Thorold with both teams playing a game on Friday afternoon. The Rangers play Mitchell at 4 p.m. and Barrie meets Woodslee, also at 4 p.m. The tournament features nine teams.

The 12-team 'B' tournament is hosted by Petrolia with Orillia playing Lemington on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Lisle meeting Lucan at 5 p.m.

Creemore and Owen Sound are at the 'C' championships in Port Hope. They face each other in their first contest on Friday at 5 p.m. Ten teams are vying for a championship.




Royals clinch championship

The Orillia Royals had a stellar season in the North Dufferin Baseball League's junior division, which culminated in a championship title after a 13-2 victory last night (Aug. 16) over the Creemore Padres.

Orillia swept the best of five series winning 5-3 and 10-3 in the first two games played last week.

The championship pitted the first place regular season finishers Orillia, against the second place Padres who were also defending league champs. The Royals suffered only two losses in the 18-game regular season and won all five games in the two rounds of playoffs enroute to the title.

The Royals opened the final game by scoring two runs in the first inning and quickly added a third in the second frame. Creemore answered with a single run in their half of the second, before a homer from Chase Brennan in the third scored two more for Orillia.

Orillia scored two more in the fifth inning including a solo home run from Brennan, four in the sixth and finished with two in the seventh frame.

Creemore plated a lone run in the sixth frame to remove the mercy rule and went down swinging in the seventh inning.

Orillia silenced Creemore bats all series and in the final game Creemore managed only one hit by Brady Reynolds.

The Royals on the other hand recorded 16 hits. Brennan was clutch with his two homers and a single as was Whyatt Winkel with two doubles and two singles. Teddy McCollum-Kuntz hit a single and two doubles with teammate Jhett Winkel contributing a double and a single. Owen Kaczanowski hit two singles and lone hits came from Nolan Ness-Thomas and Kobe Geofroy.

Geofroy started on the mound for the Royals. He pitched four no-hit innings, giving up one run, walking two, hitting one and striking out four Padres.

Max Rutherford came in for relief and pitched the remaining three innings, giving up one run on one hit, walking one, and striking out five batters.

Tait Lightheart pitched for Creemore and over his five and one-third innings gave up nine runs on 13 hits, walked three and struck out four.

Anson Dupuis pitched one and two-thirds of the game, giving up three runs on three hits, walking one, and striking out one.

In a post-game presentation, league secretary and junior division convenor Scott Anderson had the honour to present the Anderson Trophy to a trio from Orillia - Ben Barzo, Brennan, and Wyatt Thompson.




Juniors fall short at OBAs

The U22 provincial championships were held over the weekend with the Orillia Royals, Barrie Baycats, Innisfil Cardinals, and Orangeville Bengals taking part.

The Orillia Royals at the 'AA' tournament played Erindale for their first game taking a 8-3 win. They met Whitby in game two losing the contest 6-3 and finished the tournament with a second loss, this time to host Seaway 6-2.

Seaway and Whitby advanced to the championship and with rain delays and Seaway playing three games in a day, had the game scheduled for this morning (Monday).

Down in Windsor, the Barrie Baycats won their first game against Kingston12-9 at the 'A' championships. They faced a strong Mississauga SW team in their second game taking a 5-0 loss.

Barrie came up with a 3-2 win over Caledon to stay alive for their third game. In the fourth round they met Mississauga again and although a close game, the Baycats suffered a 5-4 loss.

Mississauga went on to claim the 'A' title with a win over North London.

At the 'B' tournament in Simcoe, the Innisfil Cardinals and Orangeville Bengals met for their first game with the Bengals taking a 4-1 win.

Innisfil then met St. Thomas and suffered their second loss 8-5, knocking them out of the tournament.

Orangeville met Leamington in their second game and were thumped 16-4 before bowing out of the tournament to Simcoe, losing 12-7.

Mitchell took top spot after winning two games against the undefeated Leamington squad.

The Orillia Royals have taken a two-game lead over the Creemore Padres in the best of five junior division championship of the North Dufferin Baseball League.

A 5-3 victory Monday afternoon and a 10-3 win on Wednesday night has the Royals within a game to defeat the defending league champions.

Game 1 was held at Creemore's Gowan Memorial Park with Orillia plating a single run in the first followed by three in the second. They added a lone run in the fifth frame.

Creemore on the other hand was limited to three runs, all scored in a late seventh inning come-back attempt.

Ben Barzo led the Royals with three singles, Jhett Winkel and Chase Brennan with two hits, a single from Kobe Geofroy and a double by Teddy McCollum-Kuntz.

Liam Reynolds, Gavin Mikaczo, Brady Reynolds, Josh McBride, and Tait Lightheart singled in the game for the Padres.

Creemore started the series with Nic Guthrie on the mound. He pitched all seven innings, gave up five runs on nine hits, walked two batters, hit one, and struck out seven.

Wyatt Thompson pitched six and two-thirds for the Royals, allowing three runs on five hits, while fanning seven.

Max Rutherford came in relief for one out which he executed with a strike-out.

Game 2 was in Orillia at the short-fence Gander Ross Diamond. Orillia used this to their advantage with five home runs on the night.

Scoring three runs early in the game, the Royals added five runs in the second inning all scored on four homeruns. Orillia's Brennan hit his second homer of the night in the fourth to bring in another run and in the sixth frame the Royals plated their tenth run.

The Padres managed two runs in the second with a Lightheart single to score one and a sacrifice fly to centre field by Guthrie to score the other. Liam Reynolds hit a solo home run in the fifth.

In all, Creemore was limited to seven hits, including a single from Anson Dupuis and Mikaczo. Brady Reynolds and Lightheart hit two singles and Liam Reynolds with his homer.

Brennan had another big night for the Royals with a single and two home runs. Barzo and Owen Kaczanowski chipped in with their own homers. McCollum-Kuntz hit a home run and two singles with teammates Winkel and Nolan Ness-Thomas hitting a single each.

Geofroy toed the rubber for the Royals for two and two-thirds of the game, giving up two runs on three hits, walked one, hit two batters and struck out two.

Kaczanowski came in for one-third of an inning, walking one and striking out one batter.

McCollum-Kuntz pitched three innings, giving up one run on four hits, walking one and striking out three to record the win.

Rutherford finished the game for one inning, walking one batter and striking out three.

McBride was on the hill for the Padres, giving up ten runs on ten hits, walking two, hitting three batsmen, and striking out seven over his six innings of work.

In both games the Royals have been aggressive on the base paths, stealing bases and taking advantage of passed balls. Their pitchers have been effective in their duties keeping the Padres off balance.

The series takes a break as Orillia heads to provincial championships this weekend. Game 3 of the finals is scheduled for August 16 in Creemore at 6:15 p.m. in a do-or-die game for the defending league champions.




U22 Provincial tournaments this weekend

The North Dufferin Baseball League will be represented by four junior teams attending U22 provincial championships this weekend.

The Orillia Royals are attending the 'AA' tournament, Barrie Baycats are going 'A', and Innisfil Cardinals and Orangeville Bengals are at the 'B' tournament.

Orilia takes to the diamond on Friday (tomorrow) at 9 a.m. facing Erindale in their first game. The nine-team tournament is hosted by Seaway in the Kemptville area.

Barrie travels to Windsor for a nine-team tourney. They face Kingston at 1 p.m. Friday.

At the 10-team 'B' championships, Innisfil and Orangeville meet each other for their first game at 3 p.m. Friday, hosted in Simcoe.

All tournaments are double-elimination.




Championship game washed out at New Lowell tourney

Heavy rain Sunday night created wet field conditions and forced the cancellation of the championship game between the Bolton Brewers and the New Lowell Knights Monday morning at the Civic Holiday Weekend Tournament hosted by the Knights.

Both teams will split the tournament title for this year.

All other games were played on Saturday and Sunday with the Creemore Padres winning the consolation game against the Orillia Majors Sunday afternoon.

The Most Valuable Player of the tournament was Anson Dupuis of the Creemore Padres. T.J. Parker of the Clearview Orioles was the best batter going 7 for 7 at the plate. Kurt Roy of the New Lowell Knights was named best pitcher for the weekend.

The Orillia Royals and Creemore Padres will meet for the junior division championship after advancing past the second round of the North Dufferin League junior playoffs.

Both teams received a bye in first round action, enjoying a week's break before taking on their opponents in the second round.

Orillia finished the regular season in first place and dispatched the Innisfll Cardinals in two games by an 8-1 and 13-2 score.

The Padres finished second in the regular season and faced the Orangeville Bengals winning both games with a 12-2 and 11-5 score.

Championship action starts tonight with Creemore travelling to Orillia for an 8 p.m. game.

Game 2 is scheduled for Monday (Aug. 7) at 2:30 p.m. at the New Lowell park, which follows the New Lowell Civic Holiday Tournament championship game.

A weeklong break will occur for Orillia to prepare for the provincial 22U 'AA' tournament on Aug. 11-13. The series will resume with Game 3 on Aug. 16 in Creemore at 6:15 p.m.

Game 4 is on Aug. 17 in Orillia at 8:30 p.m. with a Game 5 set for Aug. 19 at 1 p.m also in Orillia. A sixth game is scheduled in case of rain and ties, which if needed is on Aug. 20 at 1 p.m. in Creemore.

The final series is a best of five affair.




Senior Division Playoffs begin August 8

The regular season for senior teams in the North Dufferin Baseball League wrapped up last Saturday and postseason play starts next Wednesday (Aug. 8).

The top eight teams advance to playoffs and team representatives met last evening to finalize first round schedules.

The Bolton Brewers finished in first place with a 18-2-2 record and meets the eighth seed Lisle Astros (9-11-2) starting Aug. 10 in Bolton at 7:30 p.m. Game two follows on Aug. 11 in Lisle at 6:15 p.m. with a Game 3 scheduled for Aug. 13 in Bolton at 1 p.m.

Second place New Lowell Knights (17-4-1) plays seventh place Creemore Padres (10-9-3). The first game is set for Aug. 8 in Creemore at 6:15 p.m. followed by Game 2 on Aug. 10 in New Lowell, also at 6:15 p.m. Game 3 will be played in New Lowell on Aug. 13 at 1 p.m.

Finishing in third position was the Barrie Angels with a 16-6-0 record matching them with the sixth place Midland Mariners (11-10-1). Game 1 is scheduled for Aug. 8 in Midland at 7:30 p.m. with Game 2 in Barrie on Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. Game three and four will be a doubleheader in Barrie on Aug. 13 starting at 6 p.m.

The Ivy Rangers (14-6-2) finished fourth and will take on the fifth place Clearview Orioles (14-7-1). The teams meet Aug. 9 in Clearview at 6:15 p.m., followed by an Aug. 10 game in Ivy, also at 6:15 p.m. Game 3 action will be played on Aug. 13 at 5 p.m. in Clearview.

The first round is a best of five series or first to six points, and must be completed by Aug. 18.




Seven teams for New Lowell tourney

The New Lowell Knights will host their annual baseball tournament on the Civic Holiday Weekend, Aug. 5, 6, and 7 with seven teams participating.

Like last year, the tournament will feature a Group A and Group B format, with three teams in the Group A playing each other. The team with the most points advances to the championship game while the second place team advances to the consolation final.

Group B teams advance by tournament bracket to either the consolation or championship side.

New Lowell, Mansfield Cubs, and Creemore Padres make up Group A while the Bolton Brewers, Lisle Astros, Orillia Majors, and Clearview Orioles are in Group B.

New Lowell and Mansfield play the first game Saturday at 9 a.m. followed by New Lowell and Creemore at 11 a.m. Bolton takes on Lisle at 1 p.m. and at 3 p.m. Orillia plays Clearview.

Sunday play resumes with Mansfield and Creemore at 9 a.m. followed by Group B games at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The consolation game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday and the championship game is set for Monday at 11 a.m.

The Innisfil Cardinals and Orangeville Bengals are moving on in North Dufferin Baseball League junior division action, beating their opponents in the first round of playoffs.

Both series needed three games in a best of three affair to determine a winner.

Innisfil faced a tough challenge from the Barrie Baycats, starting in Game 1 when the Baycats won 5-4. The series was plagued by rain outs and poor field conditions cancelling three games including two before the teams met again on Tuesday night where the Innisfil squad won 6-2.

Game 3 yesterday evening was a close contest with the Cardinals scoring three runs in the second inning before losing the lead to Barrie as the Baycats scored three in the third, one in the fourth and one in the fifth inning.

The Cardinals scored three runs in their half of the sixth, two of them on passed balls to regain the lead. Innisfil pitcher Matt Larose held the Baycats at bay with two quick strikeouts and finished the game with a third strikeout as Barrie had runners at first and third.

The other series had rivals Orangeville and Mansfield trade games early on. Orangeville took the first game 9-0 in a decisive win, but the Cubbies came back in Game 2 to win 6-5.

In Game 2 Mansfield was leading 4-1 into the seventh inning when Orangeville came back to score four runs to take the lead. With two out, Mansfield was able to score when a bases loaded walk tied the game and the winning run crossed the plate on a Cam Green single.

On Tuesday night Orangeville commanded the game with a two-run lead heading into the seventh inning. Mansfield scored one run and had runners on second and third with one out, when the playing lights turned off due to curfew and the game reverted back to the sixth inning for a final score of 6-4 for the Bengals.

Second round play begins this weekend. Innisfil will face the first place Orillia Royals. Game 1 will be played Sunday (July 30) in Orillia at 8 p.m. Game 2 in Innisfil on Aug. 2 at 8:30 p.m. and Game 3 back in Orillia on Aug. 3 at 8 p.m.

Orangeville meets Creemore Padres in the other series with Game 1 scheduled for Sunday (July 30) in Orangeville at 4 p.m. Games 2 and 3 are set in Creemore for July 31 and Aug. 1 with 6:15 p.m. starts.




Junior division postseason starts July 19

Six of the seven junior teams have advanced to the North Dufferin Baseball League playoffs after regular season play concluded earlier this week.

Taking top spot was the Orilla Royals, who finished the season with a 16-2-0 record. The Creemore Padres ended in second place with a 10-7-1 record. Both teams received a bye for the first round of playoffs and will play the winners of the other two series.

The first series features the Orangeville Bengals and Mansfield Cubs. Orangeville finished the season in third place with a 9-9 record. The Cubs finished with a 6-10-2 record, good for sixth place. The two teams will meet on Thursday (July 20) in Mansfield at 6:15 p.m. for their first game followed by a 7:00 p.m. game in Orangeville on Sunday (July 23).

The Barrie Baycats finished in fourth place with a 7-10-1 record and take on the Innisfil Cardinals who ended in fifth with a 6-10-2 record. Their first game is set for tomorrow (July 19) in Innisfil at 8:30 p.m. followed by a game in Barrie on Friday (July 21) at 8:00 p.m.

Playoff format during the first and second rounds will be a best of three contest or first to four points as tied games are not broken.

The Georgina Bulldogs ended the season in last place and were eliminated from the playoffs. The Bulldogs had a chance to squeak in by defeating Barrie in a July 14 match-up, but Barrie managed to win the high scoring affair 16 to 14.

Georgina was up 7-1 early in the game and then fell behind to Barrie when they scored 11 runs in the third inning. Georgina mustered seven runs in the fourth frame to retake the lead, only to see the Baycats score three runs in their half of the inning and another run in the sixth to dash any playoff hopes.

The matchup was not pretty for either pitching staff. The teams both used three pitchers with a combined total of 24 walks and eight hit batters. Barrie managed eight hits to Georgina's three.

West victorious at All-Star Game

The senior and junior division All-Star Games in the North Dufferin Baseball League were played July 8 in Owen Sound with the West beating the East 6-2 in the senior game and the Ballistics hammering the Dirt Devils 12-2 in the junior contest.

This was the West's sixth straight victory in the annual contest.

The game opened with both sides trading a run in the third inning with the East going ahead with a lone run in the fourth on an Aaron McLeod solo home run.

In the fifth frame the West plated two runs to take the lead and in the top of the ninth added three more runs to extend the lead.

The East was limited to six hits during the contest with McLeod adding a double in addition to his home run in his two at bats. Battery mates Brett Beardsall, Nolan Nicholson, Ryan Bartley and Nate Kramer chipped in with singles.

Brad Petch and Kurt Roy hit three singles during the game and Steve Barrett, Travis Fulford, Travis Saunders, Steve Bourget and Anson Dupuis singled for the winning side.

Petch and McLeod were named game most valuable players for their batting record in addition to Petch stealing two bases and scoring twice.

Stellar pitching performances by both teams kept the game moving at a fast-pace, with the West using three pitchers and the East rotating in five men on the mound.

Mike Derech started for the West, pitching three innings, allowing one run on three hits, and walking one.

Ethan Kennedy-Munsterman came in for the next three innings, giving up one run on one hit, and striking out three.

Nick Hodgson finished the game and over his three scoreless innings allowed two hits and struck out three.

The East had Matt Barr pitch the first two innings. He gave up three hits, walked one and struck out four batters.

Nate Kramer pitched the third and fourth frames, allowing one run on one hit, walking one, and striking out two.

Wayland Wilson entered in the fifth and over his one inning of work gave up two runs on three hits. He fanned one batter.

In the sixth, Ryan Bartley entered and pitched two scoreless innings striking out four of the West batters.

Trevor Smith ended the game pitching the eighth and ninth innings. Three runs crossed the plate on four hits and he struck out one batter.

Ballistics trounce Dirt Devils

The Junior All-Star Game played after the seniors, was plagued by light rain which ended the contest after six innings of play due to deteriorating field conditions.

Starting in the first inning, the Ballistics plated four runs including a double by Jayden Akins which scored two runs. Akins would score when Ben Nicholson hit a home run during his first at bat.

In an attempt to answer, the Dirt Devils scored two runs in their half of the first. They were held off by strong pitching by the Ballistics for the remainder of the game.

A sloppy sixth inning resulted in eight runs scored for the Ballistics as they took home the win.

In all, the Dirt Devils were limited to three hits in the game, two singles from Nic Guthrie and one from Dale Critchley.

The Ballistics had nine hits. In addition to the double by Akins and the homer from Nicholson, Anson Dupuis, Jhett Winkel, Jack Sinclair, Miya Waldron, Bryce Cameron, Joseph Park, and Brady Janes singled for the winning side.

Toeing the rubber for the Ballistics in the first two innings was Tait Lightheart. He allowed two runs on two hits, walked four, and struck out one.

Akins came in for a lone inning and gave up one hit while fanning two batters.

Nolan MacNeal pitched the fourth inning and walked two batters.

For the remaining two innings Cameron Mulvihill kept the Dirt Devils off the board, walking only one batter.

The Dirt Devils started Wyatt Thompson on the mound. Over his two innings he gave up four runs on three hits, walked one, and struck out two.

Easton Dobbie pitched the next two innings, allowing two hits and fanning one batter.

Cameron Sauder took the ball for one and one-third innings, giving up seven runs on three hits, walking one, hitting two batters, and striking out three.

For two-thirds of an inning, Alex Styles finished the game giving up one run on one hit, hitting one batter, walking one, and striking out one.

Nicholson was named MVP for his two-run homer to start the game for the Ballistics and Guthrie was named for the Dirt Devils for his two hits, two stolen bases, and one run scored.




Owen Sound hosts 2023 All-Star Games


The North Dufferin Baseball League hosts their annual all-star contests Sat. July 8 in Owen Sound. The senior division plays at 1 p.m. with the junior division taking to the diamond at 4 p.m.

The North Dufferin Baseball League all-stars will take to the diamond this weekend in Owen Sound at the 57th senior and 28th junior division baseball games.

The senior contest featuring the East division versus the West division kicks off at 1 p.m. followed by the junior squads, team Ballistics and Dirt Devils, playing at 4 p.m.

Players selected for the East include, Ken Chapman, Aaron McLeod, Brandon Tippin from Barrie Angels, Joshua Catalanotto, Logan Hart from Bolton Brewers, Matt Barr, Ryan Barr, Anthony Quintana from Ivy Rangers, Tyson Hansen, Cale McLean, Matt Rumney from Midland Mariners, Brett Beardsall, Pierson French, Nolan Nicholson from Orillia Majors, and Ryan Bartley, Kirk Gibson, Nate Kramer, Bryan Post, Trevor Smith, Wayland Wilson from Owen Sound Baysox. The team will be managed by Al Cooke from Owen Sound.

Meanwhile, the West features Noah Calvert-Goetz, Travis Fulford, Travis Saunders from Clarksburg Blues, Steve Barrett, Ethan Kennedy-Munsterman, Donovan Winch from Clearview Orioles, Jeff Akitt, Anson Dupuis, Tom Gateman, Eric Orser from Creemore Padres, Mike Derech, Brad Petch, Liam Reynolds from Lisle Astros, Steve Bourget, Tyler Greer, Lucas Sweet from Mansfield Cubs, and Sid Beelen, Chris Greer, Nick Hodgson, Kurt Roy from New Lowell Knights. Pete Kinghan from New Lowell will manage with Chris Esson from Clearview and Scott Anderson from Lisle coaching.

The junior contest features all seven teams divided amongst two teams, pitting teammate against teammate.

The Owen Sound Baysox welcomed the New Lowell Knights to Tom Williams Park for the first Bailey Durocher Memorial Game on Saturday.

The game was in honour of Baysox pitcher Bailey Durocher who died one year ago in a traffic collision.

Durocher's mother, Christina, threw out the ceremonial first pitch and was joined by family and friends to watch the game. Both teams wore tribute jerseys with the Baysox logo and Durocher's retired number 23 on their backs.

The Owen Sound team plans to continue the memorial game as an annual event and tribute to the young player.

The Baysox plated early runs in the game only to be out-scored by the Knights who took the contest 8 to 3.




New Lowell repeats as tournament champs

For the second straight year the New Lowell Knights took home top prize as champions at the Lisle Astros Victoria Day Weekend tournament. The Knights defeated the Clearview Orioles 8-4.

The two-day tournament featured eight teams vying for a tournament win with a full slate of games on Saturday and Sunday.

The consolation game played Sunday before the championship featured the Kincardine Cubs and the Creemore Padres. Kincardine plated the first run in the opening inning and added two more in the third before the Padres scored one in the fourth frame.

The fifth inning had both teams scoring big with the Cubs bringing in five runs and the Padres four runs. Kincardine added two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 10-5 lead. The Padres mustered four runs in their half of the seventh to bring it within one to tie the game before the third out.

In the championship game the Knights scored two runs in the third frame and then lost the lead when Clearview scored four runs in the fourth inning. In the sixth, a Brandon Norrie solo homerun started the inning and New Lowell would plate another five runs. They held the Orioles in the top of the seventh to capture the 8-4 victory.

Two-day tournament in Lisle

The annual Victoria Day Weekend tournament will be hosted by the Lisle Astros on May 20 and 21 at the Ross Houston Memorial Park in Lisle.

The two-day event has eight teams participating.

Games get underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The consolation game is set for 3 p.m. Sunday with the championship game getting underway at 5 p.m.

The first game on Saturday will feature the Lisle Astros and Orillia Majors The Creemore Padres and New Lowell Knights play at 11 a.m. followed by the Kincardine Cubs and Clearview Orioles at 1 p.m. The Owen Sound Baysox and Bolton Brewers play at 3 p.m.

Players, coaches, and fans came together yesterday (March 12) to celebrate award winners from the 2022 season in the North Dufferin Baseball League.

Chris Greer of the New Lowell Knights was the big winner, picking up the best batter title with a .627 average, the best on base with a .716 percentage and was selected as the most valuable player for the season.

His teammate Steve Baldry won the top pitcher and coach Peter Kinghan won his fifth coach of the year award as voted by fellow coaches.

Carter Burnside of the Bolton Brewers was voted best catcher and his battery mate Chris Fafalios scored the most runs, crossing the plate 30 times.

Clearview Orioles slugger Tristan Cabral hit five home runs to top that category.

The most sportsmanlike award went to Ron Dipalma of the Bolton Dodgers. This was his third consecutive win of this award.

Junior division awards had Orillia Royals' Wyatt Thompson winning the best pitcher and was named the most valuable player.

Cody Bryan from the Mansfield Cubs and Miya Waldron from the Georgina Bulldogs shared the most sportsmanlike title.

Andrew Foster of the Midland Twins was the top batter with a .567 average and the best on base with a .702 percentage.

Brayden Grech of the Caledon Nationals scored the most runs with 19 and tied with Lucas Watters of the Barrie Baycats with two home runs last season.

The awards event coincided with the annual general meeting for the 2023 season. The addition of Innisfil to the junior lineup brings the league to seven junior teams. Meanwhile, the senior division has 12 teams after the Bolton Dodgers requested a leave of absence for the upcoming season.

Vance White will serve as president after being the vice president last year, Jesse McIntyre assumes the past president position, and Chris Fafalios is the new vice president. Scott Anderson and Dan Gowan maintain their positions as secretary and treasurer respectively.

Regular season play gets underway in early May.




NDBL Awards and AGM March 12

The North Dufferin Baseball League will celebrate 2022 award winners and prepare for the upcoming season with an awards lunch and meeting on March 12 in Lisle.

Some of the awards to be presented include the best batter, best pitcher and most valuable players for both the senior and junior divisions from last season.

The awards and a lunch will start at 12 noon, followed by the annual general meeting at 1 p.m. at the Lisle Legion. Players and fans are invited to attend the awards ceremony.

The North Dufferin league offers a junior and senior division with teams from Dufferin and Simcoe Counties and York and Peel Regions. Senior or Junior teams wishing to participate in the upcoming season must be present for the meeting.
