Word from the Director of Riot Hockey

Welcome to Ottawa Riot Hockey.  This fall you will start looking at your options to what program is will be best suited for your child. Since I started the Riot program in 2004 we have had to think and re-think again the way hockey is run in the Ottawa, Ottawa Valley and Western Quebec. We have studied a variety of successful organizations around the spring hockey world to see why they are successful in doing what they do.  We are constantly looking to improve the quality of the experience for the Riot Kids.  It is not merely good enough to through just to have teams but what we are striving for all our teams are to improve how they develop the kids.   You will hear us talk about the difference between a program and just solely running a spring hockey team.

The reason is quite simple and it comes from our basic principal about running a sound program.  This philosophy stems from our Riot Pyramid of needs which is explained on page two of this brochure.  This brochure was designed to help you see clearly what you can expect when playing for one of our teams.  With in a brief six year existence we have become a leader in Hockey excellence in the Nation’s Capital and it is not by the trophies  those teams have won but by all the areas we talk about in this brochure.

RIOT PYRAMID OF NEEDS

BASIC NEEDS
The base of the Riot program is provide a summer hockey experience that is reasonable commitment wise. We would like our teams to allow a break between the winter season and Spring Season and we would like them to finish as early as possible in order to allow the kids to participate in other sports and to take as big of a break as possible before winter hockey starts again

The fees are left up to the discretion of each Riot Team.  The Riot Organization does not profit from Any of our teams and there is no fees collected by the organization from our teams, to be a part of the Riot Family.  So that mean that every dollar is put into the kids.  The individual team’s also decide how many practice hours are required.

DEVELOPMENT
We  believe that there is no better feeling we get from the coaching is when the players takes what they learn in practice and execute it in the game. We believe that it is important to have a double edge policy that re-enforces good habits as well and corrects bad habits. Practice plans have to have a well thought out progression and allow the players to think and not just do. It is not acceptable to just run a drill but it is important to remind the players why they are doing the drill and to make them aware of the key points during practice and during the game

SOCIAL AND EGO
The need for kids in a environment where it is fun to come to the rink is important either through friendships they build or the goals the team complete.

SELF ACTUALIZATION
Basically winning is a result that is desired but should not be the focus... Development over winning should be the emphasized.

Focus on Development

We  believe that there is no better feeling we get from the coaching is when the players takes what they learn in practice and execute it in the game. We believe that it is important to have a double edge policy that re-enforces good habits as well and corrects bad habits. Practice plans have to have a well thought out progression and allow the players to think and not just do. It is not acceptable to just run a drill but it is important to remind the players why they are doing the drill and to make them aware of the key points during practice and during the game.

Core and Initiation age categories (2010)

The age groups are broken down in the following categories

Core (97 to 2K)

We would like these teams in these age groups to be without a doubt the best team around locally and we would want the teams to seek out the tournaments hosting the top competition from North America.

Initiation (2K1 and 2K2)

We would like these teams in these age groups to be within the top 3 teams locally and we would want the teams to seek out the top tournament locally hosting the top local competition. They may even make 1 or two trips to Montreal or Toronto.

Red and Blue Teams

Two levels of  hockey. A Blue team and a RED Team.  Both teams should run under the same standards and guidelines. The difference is in the level of tournaments the teams attend. The RED team should compete at the highest level available in North American while the Blue team should compete at Mid Level Tournaments.
