113 years for oldest, continuous public-school rivalry, but who’s counting?

LM-RADNOR RIVALRY FACTOIDS

  • Rivalry began in 1897; 2008 marks the 132th year. Only two years were missed, 1901 and 1905. In 1901, that was due to the small pox epidemic.
  •  LM won the first meeting 10-4 in “a field just north of the railroad tracks on North Wayne Avenue,” according to the Suburban, Oct. 26, 1897
  • The Class of 2009 enjoyed a four-year sweep. With a win this year, so will the Class of 2010.
  • The total rivalry record: LM 54, Radnor 47, with 11 ties
  • Radnor’s roster over the years has included Emlen Tunnell (NFL hall of famer); Ted Dean (Philadelphia Eagles 1960 NFL championship team); the three Sydnor brothers, Willie (Pittsburgh Steelers), Chris (Oakland Raiders and a current RHS coach), Chad (Chicago Bears); Joe Iacone (Philadelphia Eagles); and Brain Henesy (Arizona Cardinals).
  • Radnor gets a half day off after every victory, a bonus not practiced in LM. This year, it will be Mon., Nov. 16, in the afternoon.
  • Radnor has won the last 11 years, its longest winning streak to date. Radnor’s previous longest were six from 1899-1904 and again 1972-1977.
  • RHS football field named for Jules “Pre” Prevost, RHS Class of 1920 and football coach from 1926-53. 2008 saw the re-dedication of Prevost Field, with a state-of-the-art artificial turf surface.
  • Coach Warren Lentz (Class of 1930) can claim the most wins in Radnor’s football history – from 1953 to 1971 he tallied 185 wins, 42 losses and three ties. From 1957 to 1962 his team was undefeated with only one tie.
  • The 1919 Radnorite reported that Mr. John Dotterer gave a star pin to all team members who had beaten LM. Each point on the star had an initial: T, D, B, L and M (Teamwork, Duty, Brilliance, Loyalty and Merit). The team had its own interpretation: “These Devils Beat Lower Merion.”
  • The 1943 RHS football team appeared in Life magazine. The 1996 (100th game) RHS & LM teams appeared on Good Morning, America.
  • The Radnor Has-Beens, a loosely organized group of football alum, was instituted in 1945. At the first banquet – held in the RHS gym – the 1915 team was honored.
  • “The” bell, around since at least 1957, is rung Monday if RHS wins.
