In their first ever soccer tournament, our Springfield Sizzle U9 team came home with the Championship Trophy after stunning the Division 3 Westmont Blue Thunder 2-1 in the Hunter Jack Walsh Championship game.
The Sizzle got outstanding goaltending from sure handed Aidan Gallagher, who in the first half of the day, shutdown the Ukrainian National Thunder (Horsham) 1-0 which elevated the team to the championship game. Aidan also added an assist in this hard fought game.
There were many heros in the four games they played, here are some of the highlights:
Emma Whitaker and Abby Aughe were tough as nails as they frustrated the opposing offense by swarming the ball. Natalie "The Enforcer" Bruinsma pitched in to help aid in the strong defensive half of the field.
Erin Gormley perplexed the defense with her pinpoint passing. Erin along with linemate Julia Carlin were the workhorses for Springfield playing most of the last two deciding games. Erin came away with two assists on the weekend.
Bria Hemphill, "The Flyer", scored goals in both Sunday games on breakaways where she outran everyone on the field.
Dana Mirigliano, who always seems to be in the right place at the right time, hammered home what proved to be the decisive goal in the Championship game. Dana wedged herself between Westmont's defensive wall on a corner kick by Erin Gormley and somehow got it through two defenders.
Gia Panachelli opened up the scoring for the weekend with a goal against CRUSA Independence in the opening game.
Emma Sulpizio, Jamie Galloway, and Jordan Galloway adjusted well to new positioning set forth by the Sizzle coaching staff. Jordan and Jamie anchored the Center Midfield position with Natalie Bruinsma, while Emma played a strong pressuring offense.
The Sizzle return to their PAGS schedule at the friendly confines of New Nether Netherwood field Saturday 10/16 against Garnet Valley.
