Miami Lakes Optimist Club
In the year of 1969 when the Town of Miami Lakes was first starting, two individuals realized the need to start an Optimist Club to service all the youth of the community into productive activities. The first sports team started was football along with cheerleading. The next sport was boys’ baseball and girls’ softball. These sports were played at Miami Lakes Elementary School playground because at that time Miami Lakes did not have any parks. In 1973 basketball for boys was added to the Optimist Club and at that time new Miami Lakes Park had just been built. Around 1976 soccer was introduced for boys and girls, bringing the total of sports offered for the kids to four.
Typical of the times was the fact that on many nights and early Saturday mornings, the coaches would bring their lawn mowers to the Park and cut the grass. This was the spirit and hands on involvement of the membership in the Optimist Club. These same men installed additional sprinkler piping and made the sprinkler system automated; installed the first lighting system on two fields, and built a clubhouse with their own fundraising.
Today the sports programs have grown to over 300 kids playing tackle football and cheerleading, baseball and softball participants are over 700, boys and girls basketball is over 500 and our newest sport, flag football was over 150 boys in its first year.
Our sports programs while organized by the members of the Optimist Club of Miami Lakes rely on the parents of the participants to volunteer their time to coach and supervise the teams.
We wanted to take this opportunity to thank the hundreds of concerned parents for being an important part of this volunteer effort that has made the Optimist program so successful.

Town of Miami Lakes
Miami Lakes strives to be a friendly, peaceful and beautiful town whose residents and business leaders take pride in where they live, work and play.
When it incorporated in December 2000, the Town of Miami Lakes became the 31st municipality in Miami-Dade County. Known as one of the youngest cities in Miami-Dade County, Miami Lakes is home to over 27,000 residents and over 1,700 businesses.
The master plan began over 43 years ago, when the Graham family began development of what was their dairy farm land. Unlike many cities and towns created during the early 1960’s, the Grahams decided to create a master plan for the city that would allow for three decades of growth, construction, and changing market conditions. Their precise planning and development of the original 3,000 acres of land led to a vibrant and beautiful city with parks, tree-lined streets, and a hometown atmosphere.
True to its name, there are 23 lakes nestled within neighborhoods in the Town. There are also numerous opportunities to enjoy the outdoors with numerous parks and tot lots situated within walking distance of every neighborhood. And, not to anyone’s surprise, one can still see cows grazing on some parcels, in true honor of the historical beginnings as a dairy farm.
As the Town of Miami Lakes looks to the future, it will continue to strive for innovation while remaining true to its original founders’ vision of providing the highest quality of life for its residents and visitors.
