Our tournament was a great success. We had 946 competitors wrestle in 1,168 matches and the last match was done at 3:15. It was a ton of work and we could not have done it without your help. We are already brainstorming about how to improve for next year. If you have any suggestions, feel free to send them to me. Just put 09 Susan Collins Memorial Tournament in the subject line.
We've started the Susan P Collins Scholarship fund. It honors a great lady. She started working at our tournament over 20 years ago and we lost her last year. She's missed by many. You can talk to coach Matt if you want to make a small donation.
Remember the new practice schedule +++ Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 for the younger kids and 6:30 for the older kids. There is no longer a Wednesday practice. It's been moved to Saturday. Kids who are hungry to improve should be in the wrestling room at 10:00 a.m on Saturday.
On Saturday and Sunday some of the kids will be wrestling in the Kids Open in Peoria. This is for the really advanced kids. We've already registered the kids who will compete there.
We've dropped the Kenosha Tournament that's listed on our schedule for 1/19,20.
Here's an event not listed on the schedule. On Monday, January 21st, we're going to Niles West for an informal duel meet. This is open to anyone who wants to compete. The kids get a ton of mat experience in a short time. It's free, fun, quick, and low in calories. We'll have more info later in the week.
Upcoming dates
Saturday, January 19th the OPRF Varsity and Freshmen have their home tournament. Wrestling starts at9:00 am. The finals start at 2:00 pm. We have one of the best teams in the state. It's fun to watch them compete now and then.
Sunday, January 27th is the end of the season for kids who are 8 and under. They've had a great year so far and we hope they can finish strong.
Weekend of February 9+10 The Spartan Rumble in Danville, IL is fantastic. We'll get rooms in a hotel with a pool. This is the end of the season for the 10-14 year olds who don't want to compete in the state series. Let coach Steve or Matt if you want to compete there.
WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
It was a real tough call this week, but all of the coaches ended up agreeing that Tre McGahee, ANTHONY PAOLINELLI, and Jake Johnson should share the honors. Tre and Anthony worked the exact moves that were shown in practice. That's what we like to see. Thanks for paying attention and applying what you were taught!!!! Jake was ahead by 14 points in one of his matches and the opponent decided to let him go; thereby ending the match so he would not have to face another moment of Jake. Good job!!!!
PRACTICE WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
This is a new award; we think it's the most important. It recognizes the wrestlers who put a great effort into practice. This week, the honor goes to Nick Reyes: all of the coaches agreed here. His effort will pay off; that's the way this sport works.
