LITTLE QUAKERS 54,
SARASOTA (Fla.) 0
No one can remember if it happened
before. Fifty-three years is a long
time, but most who have been around almost that long, think this was a first.
The Philadelphia Little Quakers, founded in 1953 by Mr. Bob Levy, recorded an
undefeated, unscored-upon season, capped off by a total shellacking of
previously unbeaten and defending State Champion, Sarasota Florida,
54-0.
Special teams
and defense set the tone while the offense efficiently used 18 plays to gain 190
yards on the ground with 5 TD’s to overcome a team that was much faster and a
hostile hometown crowd.
After a scoreless first quarter which saw Florida block
and early field goal attempt, the staff settled in for what looked like a long
night’s battle. Special teams came
to the rescue with Anthony Dupell (Penndale) recovering a
fumbled punt return at the Florida 9 yard line. From there, tailback Justin
Powell (Calvary Baptist) scored and the Tim McCaffrey
(St. Jerome) extra point kick was good for an 8-0 lead.
The Quakers scored on their next possession with
Rashad Campbell (Chestnut Hill Acad) following a great block by
TE Martin Goldfarb (Penn Charter), went 51
yards for a score, to make it 16-0. After the kickoff, a Florida penalty backed
them up inside the 10 yard line.
With just under 5 minutes remaining in the half, linebacker
Brandon Robertson (Carnell) pressured the Florida QB into a bad
throw which was picked off and returned 11 yards for a touchdown by DE
Blaise Fullen (Penn Charter), making the score 24-0, making all
breathe a little easier.
The Quakers took over on downs with 1:39 remaining in
the half. After a couple
unsuccessful pass plays, Campbell scored again on a well executed reverse for a
30-0 lead to put the game away.
There was a second half to play and the hometown crowd
was not happy with their team’s performance. They boisterously tried to rally their
team and to rattle the northern visitors, but the Little Quakers would have none
of it. They received the second
half kickoff and silenced the crowd with a four play, 62 yard drive. This time,
fullback Eric Moore (Masterman) did the damage by rushing for
44 yards on the drive, including the 1 yard TD run to make it
38-0.
The defense, using
many backup players, again stopped the Florida offense and gave the Quaker
offense great field position. They
were content to run the clock but Justin Powell got loose for a
25 yard touchdown to make it 46-0.
Florida made one last run to try to score in the fourth quarter, but
Je’Ron Stokes (Abington JHS) intercepted a pass and sprinted 69
yards untouched for the final score.

Little Quakers 30, New
York City 0
Playing under the lights at University of Pennsylvania’s
Franklin Field for the first time last Friday night, the Philadelphia Little
Quakers used a devastating ground attack to defeat a very good New York City
Team, 30-0. They rushed for an incredible 328 yards on 31 attempts, and the
defense was relentless in their pressure, resulting in their third straight
shutout.
The coaching staff
knew that line play on both sides of the ball was going to be critical, since
the NY team was a little bigger and that they were well coached. Their coaches included several members
from Brooklyn Poly Prep, which is one of the east coast’s premier high school
programs.
The offense was
lead by tailbacks Justin Powell (Calvary Baptist) with 143
yards on 9 carries, with 2 touchdowns, and Rashad
Campbell (Chestnut Hill Acad) with 108 yards on 10 carries and
a touchdown). This week, fullback Eric Moore (Masterman) got in
on the act with 58 yards on 8 carries and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Quakers held the NY offense to 3
first downs and forced them into a passing game which was not their strong suit.
LB Brandon Robertson (Carnell) and DE Blaise
Fullen (Penn Charter) spearheaded the defense. Special mention to the
offensive and defensive lines for their great work, using their quickness to
dominate the line of scrimmage:
Tom Devlin (Chestnut Hill Acad), Anthony
Dupell (Penndale), Mike Rauchut (Penn Charter),
Matt Schwemmer (Wissahickon), Tykeem Tolliver
(Fels JH), Joey Mascino (Nativity), Keith Tyer
(Judge), Ricky Williams (North Catholic), Mikhail
Reed (Roosevelt MS), Joey Volgraf
(St. Philip Neri), Jeff Schill (St.
Alphonsus), Tim McCaffrey (St. Jerome), TE’s Tim Decker
(Penn Charter), Mike Massaro (Penn
Charter), and Cory Sholly (Indian Crest).

Little Quakers 36,
Bucks County Bears 0
For the second straight week, the
Phila Little Quakers used their smothering defense and superior running game to
defeat the Bucks County Bears, 36-0. This made the Quakers 2-0 for the year with
two shutouts.
Early on, the
Quakers drove to the ball to the Bears 9, but the Bears, also playing great
defense, forced a fumble. Justin Powell (Calvary Baptist)
returned the punt 23 yards to the Bear 11 yard line. Again, the Bears defense
stiffened, keeping the Quakers out of the endzone. Next, the Quakers’
Jason Ulmer (Father Judge) intercepted a pass and returned to
the 15 yard line and again, the Bears refused to let the Quaker offense
score.
At this point the
defense took it upon themselves to motivate the team. After a sack for a 9 yard loss by DT
Joe Volgraf (St. Philip Neri), the other DT Matt
Schwemmer (Wissahickon) sacked the Bears QB in the endzone for a
safety. The Quaker offense took the hint, and scored on a 1 yard leap into the
endzone by Powell. The score was set up by a nifty 18 yard run by
Rashad Campbell (Chestnut Hill Acad) and a
beautiful 9 yard completion from Mark Giubilato (St. Anastasia)
to Blaise Fullen (Penn Charter). The Quakers got a scare at the end of
the half when the Bears intercepted a pass inside their own 10 yard line and was
clear down the sideline, but good hustle by Fullen prevented a 90 yard
interception return for a touchdown.
The second half was all Quakers, as they seemed to wear
down the Bears, who had many players going both ways. They drove from their own
38 to the Quaker 11 yard line, but failed to score. On the Quakers first play,
Justin Powell (12 carries/147yds) took off on an 89 yard run to make the score
14-0. Tim McCaffery’s (St. Jerome) extra point made it 16-0. At
that point, the Bears seemed to run out of gas.
Powell scored again on a 28 yard run and on 3rd down and
11, fullback Eric Moore (Masterman), with 8 carries for 55
yards, turned a 2 yard completion into a score, breaking two tackles along the
way, then scored on a straight ahead dive from 35 yards out to round out the
scoring. In all the Quakers rushed 29 times for 237 yards. Passing, Giubilato
was 4 for 12 for 52 yards and Peter Haines
(Germantown Acad) was 2 for 2 for 42 yards, 1
TD.
Defensively, the front
line of McCaffrey, Schwemmer (sack), Volgraf (2 sacks), Joey
Mascino (Nativity) with 6 tackles & 2 sacks, lead the way, along
with DB Jason Golderer (Father Judge) 5 tackles and an
interception and LB Fullen. (6 tackles).
Next up for the Quakers, the New York Police &
Fireman’s team. They are coached by members of the nationally ranked Brooklyn
Poly Prep High School coaching staft.
Little Quakers 28,
Southwest Phila. Roadrunners 0
Entering their
fifty-first season, the nationally renowned Philadelphia Little Quakers, posted
a shutout victory in their opening game against the Southwest Phila.
Roadrunners, 28-0. The team is made
up of 13 & 14 year old boys, weighing a maximum of 150 pounds and they come
from schools and club programs all over the Delaware
Valley.
Tailback
Justin Powell (Calvary Baptist) opened the scoring with a 2
yard run. The score was set up by Je’Ron Stokes’ (Abington) 24
yard interception return to the 2 yard line. Tim McCaffrey’s
(St. Jerome) extra point kick made it 8-0 and the Quakers never looked
back.
Rashad
Campbell (Chestnut Hill Acad) returned a punt 24 yards to the
Roadrunners’ 34 yard line which set up a 20yd touchdown pass from Mark
Giubilato (St. Anastasia) to Mike Massaro (Penn
Charter) midway through the second quarter. Late in the first half, Campbell scored
from 10yds out to put the Quakers up 20-0 and from there, they left things up to
their defense.
Led by Ricky Williams (North Catholic)
with 5 tackles and Michael Keitt-Scott (Harding MS) with 3, the
Quakers completely shut down the Roadrunners, allowing only 2 first downs and 36
total yards for the game. Defensive backs Stokes and Campbell each had
interceptions while Joe Volgraf (St. Philip Neri) and
Mike Rauchut (Penn Charter) each had fumble recoveries.
Jason Ulmer (Father Judge) also defended the
pass extremely well and just missed an interception.
Next up for
the Little Quakers will be the tough Bucks County Bears, who have defeated the
Quakers in their last two meetings.
The game will be at 9:30 A.M. on Sunday, November 21, at Franklin
Field.
