AIRCAT-Mercy Volleyball Program steps it up!!
May 13, 2008 Today, we received the new AirCAT Volleyball machine, which has been assembled and tested at Mercy with the help of Nicole our trainer.  We also received the Block n' Cover net systems which I got to test, and fail with... but the system worked.  Additionally, we did some cleaning up of the equipment rooms to help make room for the new AirCAT, which we can call "Charlie" in honor of the newest addition to Coach Dan's family.

If you want to see the products, you can look up Airborne Athletics, Inc. or AirCAT products. We anticipate that these additions will provide a significant increase in repetitions and quality touches on the ball.

Good luck to the coaches and players and use "Charlie" in good health.

As always, thank you for your support.

Marlins Lose Heartbreaker to Regional Champ - Novi
November 10, 2007
"That was EXCELLENT High School Volleyball" was the best way to put the Regional Semi-Final between eventual Regional Champion Novi, and the Mercy Marlins, according to legendary chief cheerleader and Marlin dad, Frank Loftus.  Unfortunately for the Marlins, they ended their spectacular season of 47 wins and only 9 losses, in a five game rollercoaster ride at Novi High School.

The Marlins started out slow with several unforced errors in the first two games, letting the advantage slip to a fired-up Novi Wildcat team, losing 18-25, 21-25.  The third game also started upside down until the Marlins got a spark from Sophomore Katherine Garry, in her first appearance for the varsity, and a new face which Novi didn't know how to handle.  Katherine rocketed her serves across the net and played rock solid defense while the Marlins returned to their game, and pulled ahead to 22-18.  At this point a Novi outside hitter confidently crushed the ball across the net, hoping to shift the momentum and sweep the Big Fish, but Jr. Mackenzie Bickes executed an amazing dig to put the Marlins at 23-18, from which they never looked back.  Sr. Katherine Gardner and Juniors Katie Jenereaux and Sarah Wojcik continued to support the Marlins with their usual strong defense. Jr Nia Martin and sophomores Angel Marinos and Michelle Ho boosted the Marlins with their strong support until the 25-18 win was secured.

Game 4 started out rocky with the Wildcats pullling to a 3-10 worrysome lead until a huge triple block of Juniors Andrea Conover, Bridget Hickey and Stephanie Bodien shut down a powerful attack from Novi, which caused the Marlin crowd to jump to their feet with roars of approval.  From that point on, strong serving strings from Bickes (3), Bodien (5), and Garry (4), brought the Big Fish to a 21-17 lead, and a timeout by a shocked Novi team.  Digs by Sr. Kelsey Maxwell, Bickes and Garry repelled the Novi attacks, with a huge dig by Bodien at 22-17, which was more of a defensive block of stinging attack, bouncing off her fists from the back court to the tape at the top of the net - where Sr. setter Kelsey Doyle skillfully redirected the shot over the net for a kill.  Doyle led the Marlins' setting with 37 assits, while Sr. Colleen Loftus provided the constant firepower, attacking the Wildcats from the left, right and center, unbelievably without an error through the 4th game on 60 attacks.  At 24-17, Hickey put the lights out with a huge kill that almost knocked the Novi left hitter to the ground, and ignited the crowd once again, pulling the Marlins into a 2-2 tie with a 25-17 win, forcing the 5th game tie-breaker.

The final game started off in the hole once again as the Marlins slipped to 1-5, when the Marlins started clawing their way back on strong serves by Bickes and Garry.  Loftus pushed the ball on a line drive to the far corner to bring the Marlins to 7-10.  Two stuffs in a row by Jr. Tracy Whalen and a skillfully placed kill by Bodien keep the Marlins in the game at 10-13, but the Marlins ran out of runway, and fell to the eventual regional champions 10-15.

The Novi regional provided some of the best Michigan prep volleyball with Milford barely outlasting a great Livonia Churchill team in the other semi-final, who then eventually lost to the home team Novi - who says home court advantage doesn't help!  Good Luck Novi!

Congratulations to the Marlins on a GREAT season!

MARLINS SWEEP DISTRICT 23a IN 9 STRAIGHT GAMES, ADVANCE TO REGIONALS NEXT WEEKEND!
November 2, 2007
The Mercy Marlins ran the table Friday night to claim dominance in their first round of the State Volleyball Tournament.  The Big Fish didn't lose a single game in District 23A which included:  Birmingham Groves, North Farmington, Farmington Harrison, West Bloomfield and Walled Lake Northern.  The Marlins openned against Walled Lake Northern, and after starting the game in a hole with a score of Mercy 1 - WLN 5, Coach Ed Moeller called a time out and set the stage for the balance of the night.  The Marlins tied it up at 10-10, eventually winning 25-19.  Game 2 & 3 followed a similar path, with Mercy winning 25-20, 25-19.

In the Semi-Finals, Mercy crushed West Bloomfield, 25-14, 25-21, and 25-16.  Closing the long night was the finale against Birmingham Groves, which was excellent volleyball, but the better team prevailed, with the Big Fish winning 25-21, 25-22, and 25-19 in 3 neck and neck games.  Next, the Marlins advance to the Regionals this weekend, hosted by Novi, and featuring the district winners from Livonia Churchill #24, White Lake #30, West Bloomfield #23, and Northville.

This brings the Marlins Match record to 40 wins, 6 loses, and 9 ties, represented by 99 games won vs. only 35 lost.  GO MARLINS!  CONGRATULATIONS!

Big Fish Grab 2nd in Gold at Waterford Mott
October 27, 2007  The Mercy Marlins started the Waterford Mott Tournament with a bang, winning 4 straight games with a new lineup due to injuries to Senior Kathryn Gardner and Junior Morgan McPartlin and ACT testing for Senior Kelsey Doyle.  Big contributions from Mackenzie Bickes, Sarah Wojcik, Katie Jenereaux, and Angel Marinos, propelled the Marlins into the Gold Bracket Championship game, losing to a very tough Milford Mavericks team in the headliner match of the day.

In the first match, the Big Fish eliminated Waterford Kettering 25-20, 25-20 led by Bridget Hickey, Sarah Wojcik, Stephanie Bodien and Colleen Loftus on the attack with the assists led by Mackenzie Bickes and Bodien.  Bickes and Loftus also led the serving attack, with an amazing 20 blocks in the match, led by Hickey and Tracy Whalen and Angel Marinos.  Defensively the Marlins dug up the Kettering attacks, led by Loftus, Kelsey Maxwell, Wojcik, and Jenereaux.

Match 2 against East Detroit saw the Marlins easily dominate 25-8, and then come from behind to clinch the second game 26-24.  In game 2, Bickes fired off a huge string of serves to close a 6 point gap and put the Marlins in the lead.  Bodien led the assists, with powerfull hitting coming from Hickey, Wojcik, Loftus and Bodien.  Defense once again relied on Maxwell, Wojcik, Loftus, and Jenereaux, while the blocks were led by Whalen and Hickey, against a team that decided they had to avoid the blocks with tips and air balls to keep the Marlins from stuffing the ball down their throats.

Match 3 against cross town rival Farmington Harrison highlighted the Marlins determination, starting the Power Pool with a convincing 25-10, 25-16 win.  Bickes once again led the serving and assists, while attacks where led by Wojcik, Hickey and Bodien. Seniors Loftus and Maxwell led the defense with quick coverage and scrambling by Bodien, while Whalen, Hickey and Marinos put up a brick wall at the net, logging 8 solo blocks to shut down the opposition.

Match 4 pitted the Marlins against Royal Oak, and a 25-16 and 25-19 victory, led by a 52% kill rate led by Loftus, Bodien, Hickey and Wojcik, assited by setting led by Bickes, and Maxwell and Loftus leading the passing with no errors.  Marinos and Hickey led the blocks with 4 each, with serving led by Bodien, Loftus, and Jeneraux, each adding aces to their 19 good serves in the match.

Match 5 started rough with a 16-25 loss against Utica, but turned around with a convincing 25-16, 15-8 comeback. Captain Colleen Loftus slammed Utica with 12 kills and a 71% kill ratio, with no errors, supported by Kelsey Doyle and Bickes on assists.  Loftus also notched 3 aces to lead the serving attack with strong support from Jenereaux and Maxwell.  Andrea Conover, Hickey and Whalen led the blocks with Maxwell and Bodien providing errorless passing.

Gold Finals – Match 6 vs. Milford and the 7’ Middle – a little intimidating to start with, but the Marlins put up a good match, eventually losing 14-25, 16-25.  Loftus and Bodien led the attack, combining for 32 strikes, but the persistant Mavericks' defense keep bringing it right back to the Marlins.  Katie Jenereaux had the serving magic, leading the service attack with 9, but the entire team could only count 2 aces against a good defensive team.  Doyle distributed the majority of sets, and Maxwell, Bickes, and Bodien had solid defense, but the lighting kills from 7 foot up were too much for the Big Fish to handle Saturday.  Just as the Marlins began to figure out how to work around the tall middle, they ran out of runway and daylight, finishing off the day with an overall solid performance winning 12 of 16 games at Waterford, putting the season match count at 37 wins, 6 losses and 9 ties.

 Key Stats for the tournament:

Blocks: Hickey 19, Whalen 14, Marinos 12, Bodien 6, Loftus,Conover 5, Wojcik 3

Marlins Put Out Blazers in Three Straight
October 16, 2007 From the effort of 38 KILLS, 5 ACES and 22 BLOCKS, our Varsity Mercy Marlins finished the regular CHSL season beating the Ladywood Blazers in three straight sets.

The potential of the Marlins showed strongly in the first set of the evening as they tallied 15 kills over 7 hitters without an error.  Bolstered with 2 aces and 6 blocks, they played as the team they were in Kalamazoo when they overwhelmed Marian and surprized #1 State ranked North Branch.  It was a whole team effort culminating in a 25-10 win.

Set 2 found the pace dropped off some.  Mercy pounded in 13 more kills and 1 ace, combined with 9 blocks to set Ladywood back again with a 25-15 loss.  Ending the night in set 3, the Marlins shot in another 10 kills, 2 aces and 6 blocks against a much more effective effort by the Blazers but still being able to send them packing with a Mercy win at 25-22.

Anxious for the CHSL Tournament, the Marlins are scheduled at Notre Dame Prep in Pontiac on Thursday, October 18, for a 5PM match with Gabriel Richard, and a potential 7PM match with host, Notre Dame Prep.  Provided Mercy secures wins in both matches on Thursday, the Marlins will be at the Catholic League Finals on Monday, October 22, at Madonna University for a 7PM championship match.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!!!

JV Marlins have a Tough Day at Marian Invitation
October 13, 2007

The Mercy JV team competed at the Marian Volleyball Tournament on October 13th.  12 teams competed at the tournament and the Marlins were able to make playoffs.

The team played the first match of the day and won both games against Woodhaven.  After a two match break, the Marlins were outpaced by a fast moving Lakeland team and dropped both games.  Later, the team was able to regroup to win one out of the two games versus Lahser.

During playoffs, the Marlins faced a strong Stoney Creek team.  In the first game, Stoney Creek took the lead quickly, but after many excellent passes, kills, and serves, Mercy was able to battle back and win the game.  The second game started out the same as the first, but unfortunately Mercy lost momentum and was not able to win, so the two teams played a deciding third game.  In the third game, both teams worked hard, but Mercy slowly lost momentum to give Stoney Creek the win.  The team ended the day early, but is more motivated than ever to come out strong and play well at Catholic Leagues on Friday!

Varsity takes three straight from Regina
October 9, 2007 At the new Regina Saddle Dome, the Mercy Marlins had the winning ride.  Three straight sets were taken by the Marlins, but it was not without challenge.

Set one was a close battle by both squads.  The Saddlites gave Mercy all they could handle.  The Marlins, not at the top of their game, had some trouble with consistency and Regina took advantage keeping the set close to the end.  However, the Marlins overcame their 15 errors with 5 blocks 13 kills and an ace to pull it out 25-20.  Set two was more in line with the Marlins plan.  Fourteen kills out of 32 attacks and frustrating the Saddlites into errors gave Mercy a comfortable margin and win at 25-14.  But not all was done.  Regina had not rolled over.  Set three turned out to be closer than set one.  The Marlins managed only 24 attacks, but were able to convert 12 into kills.  They reduced their errors and had four aces.  Regina was tenacious and would not go down easy battling to the end of a 25 -22 Marlin victory.

Noteable STATS:
Kills- Loftus 21; Hickey and McPartlin 6 each; Conover 3; Bodien, Doyle and Wojcik 1 each
Assists- Doyle 24; Bickes and Conover 1 each
Aces- Bodien, Gardner, Jenereaux, Loftus, Maxwell and Wojcik 1 each
Digs- Bodien 16; Loftus 12; Maxwell 9; Doyle 6; Gardner and Jenereaux 5; Bickes and Wojcik 3; Hickey 2; Conover, Marinos and McPartlin 1

Freshman Place 2nd at Madonna Invitational
October 6, 2007
On Saturday, October 6, the Mercy Freshman team travelled to Plymouth High School for the Madonna University Freshman Invitational.  With 15 teams attending, the girls knew that they were going to have to bring their A game.  In Pool Play, the team showed that they were up to the challenge; they had convincing wins against Livonia Stevenson, Farmington and Redford Union.

Coach Jerry Abraham (Madonna) provided some positive feedback to the girls prior to their match against Ann Arbor Huron for 1st place in Pool C.  He was very impressed with the team's court sense and complimented the girls on their movement on the court.  The pep talk worked as the team defeated AA Huron in 2 easy games and finished as the #1 seed heading into the playoffs.

In the Semi-final match, the team was able to overcome missed serves and won the match in 2 close games.  The Finals pitted Mercy against the host team - Plymouth.  The girls continued to play strong and won game 1 25-17.  In the game 2, the team was leading 22-18 and ended up dropping the game 25-23.   With the momentum shifted, the team couldn't recover and ended up on the wrong end of a 15-4 score to finish in 2nd Place for the day.

The season totals for the Freshman team are:

Matches: 40-7-2 (losses to Fraser, Bedford, Marian, Petoskey, East Kentwood, Novi & Plymouth)

Mercy Makes the Playoffs At Northwood
October 6, 2007

Our Mercy Marlins competed at the Northwood University Varsity Tournament today in Midland.  From a field of fifteen teams the Marlins emerged from pool play with seven wins and one loss.  The opening match pitted Mercy against Durand.  Set one found the Marlins getting off to a slow start and not being able to catch-up losing 16-21.  In the second set the roles were reversed and Mercy came out on top 21-19.  Finding their groove the Marlins moved past Mt Pleasant (21-9, 21-9), Lansing Eastern (21-7, 21-12) and Powers Catholic (21-15, 21-12) unscathed.

Seeded fourth for the playoffs, Mercy met Pt. Huron (Huskies) in the quarter finals.  The Marlins had trouble getting anything going in set one and fell to the Huskies 21-11.  Set two found Mercy with new life and in a hard fought, see-saw battle, came out on top 22-20.  Tied at one set each, set three had each team tensed.  Unfortunately, Pt. Huron pulled away from the Marlins with a 15-8 win and would go on to win the tournament.

Tonight Mercy Varsity Volleyball Farmington Hills style met the new home of the Regina Saddlelites, and had no problem breaking in those new shoes.....winning in three games, 25-20, 25-14, 25-22.  This victory brings the Marlins record to 27 matches won this season against 4 losses and 5 ties.  The only losses this year are to Top ranked North Branch, Pt. Huron, Brighton and cross town rival Marion.  The Big Fish meet the Marion Mustangs in their new gym this Thursday in what will be a very intense match as the schools have perfectly split the 3 matches so far this year; a tie at the Troy tournament, Marion won the first CHSL match, and Mercy won over Marion in the semifinals of the Kalamazoo tournament two weeks ago.

Mercy Frosh Finish 2nd at Ann Arbor Pioneer Invitational
September 29, 2007
On Saturday September 29, 2007, the Mercy Freshman team finished 2nd out of 16 teams at the Pioneer High School Invitational.  During pool play, strong serving and good execution of the ace, bump, set, spike led to convincing victories over Walled Lake Northern, Wyandotte Roosevelt and Salem.  The quarter finals proved to be a little more challenging for the Marlins; however a string of good serves turned the momentum in Mercy's favor and they beat Kalamazoo Central in 2 games.  In the semi final match, Mercy easily swept passed Canton to advance to the finals.  In the Championship match, Novi was quick to take significant leads in both games.  Mercy battled back to within points in each game but ended up taking second place.  The team's strong and consistent serving throughout the day was evident as the girls could be heard rhyming and dancing to their new "ace" cheer.

Marlins Extinguish Ladywood Blazers
September 25, 2007 - 09:30 PM The Marlins put out the fire of the Ladywood Blazers tonight.  All three teams, Freshman, JV and Varsity swept their respective matches without a loss.  The Blazers did not go down without a fight.  The Mercy JV wound up with its hands full in the second game, eeking out the victory by a couple of points and the match.

The Mercy Varsity started out strong in game one with a 12-2 lead.  Ladywood fought back to close the gap, but the Marlins finished the first game out decidedly at 25-15.  Games two and three saw the tables turned when the Blazers took early leads in both.  The Marlins took time-outs to stem the tide and refocus, coming back to nip away at the Blazers closing out both games 25-21 and 25-17.

MARLINS CRUSH MARIAN, BUT JUST MISS NO. BRANCH IN GOLD FINALS AT KALAMAZOO
September 22, 2007
The Big Fish came up with a huge performance at this weekend's gigantic Kalamazoo tournament, capturing 2nd place in the Gold Bracket, topping dozens of Michigan's best teams.  In the semi-finals, the Marlins downed Marian, then fell just short in the championship match vs. North Branch.  The Big Fish also got a big scare early in the playoffs vs. Traverse City West, when Sr. Kathryn Gardner dove for a ball but landed hard, snapping her head back, and earning her an ambulance ride to the hospital on a backboard as a pre-cautionary measure.   The Marlins were relieved to have everything checkout okay, and Kathryn rejoined the team later to watch the championship game.

In a spirited rematch against CHSL rival Marian Mustangs, the BIG FISH tamed the top rated team with ease, seeking revenge against a Marian team that easily beat the Marlins in a dual meet this past week.  Marian started out with a narrow victory in game 1, winning 18-25.  The second and third games were a completely different story.  The Marlins raced out to a 4-0 start in each game, never looking back,  to the cheers of Frank and the parents of the "gills gone wild". Game 2 ended with the Marian team only gaining 11 points vs. the Marlins 25, and the final game ended at 15-9.  Individual highlights started off with a fantastic blocking effort all around, led by Jr. Bridget Hickey with 6 blocks, Morgan McPartlin and Andrea Conover with 3 each, Tracy Whalen with 2 and Colleen Loftus and Kelsey Doyle with 1 each. Colleen Loftus led the arial attack with an amazing 15 kills, Bridget Hickey with 8, and Stephanie Bodien with 5.  Bodien and Morgan McPartlin combined for 18 attacks without an error in the entire match. While Captain Kelsey Doyle directed the offense with 18 assists, Mackenzie Bickes and Bodien led the defense with 21 and 18 digs/serve receives respectively.  Bickes, filling in for the injured Gardner, played aggressively and kept the Marian offense stymied.  Loftus and Maxwell each contributed 11 defensive stops, with Doyle scooping up 8, mostly dinks, as the Mustangs were frustrated by the effective blocking by the Marlins.  Marlins scored well with solid serving with only 1 missed serve in the match. Captains Colleen Loftus and Stephanie Bodien led servers with 11 good serves, 2 aces and 10 good serves, 3 aces respectively.  Maxwell and Bickes pumped across 9 good serves each, keeping the Mustangs back on their heels.

In the final match, the Marlins, jumped out to an early lead in game 1, but slowly were outpaced by the North Branch Broncos, losing 21-25, and 22-25, and a very well played, great volleyball match.

Stats for the day were:

Mercy loses to Marian, awaiting rematch at Marian
September 20, 2009
The Big Fish came up short before an enthusiastic crowd honoring past Mercy players, losing to the Mustangs in 3 games.  Despite the scores, the Marlins put up a spirited opposition, only losing out to a very patient and consistent Marian team.  Game one provided the most excitement of the evening, as the Marlins were held to only a couple points as Marian inched up into the double digits only to see the Marlins charge back, eventually getting out lasted 17-25.  The second game ended in a disappointing 10-25, and the third was even up midway into the game until Marian pulled away to win 25-14.

The Marlins hope to get back on track this weekend with an overnite tournament in Kalamazoo.  Overall record for the Marlins now stands at 38W-15L (games) or  16W 4L and 2T in matches for the season.  Despite the loss to state ranked Marian, the Marlins have started out the season very strong, and expect to give Marian a run for their money in the rematch at Marian's new gym.

After easily winning the Silver Bracket in this Saturday's Walled Lake Central Tournament, the Big Fish increased their season record of matches to 15 Wins, 2 Losses and 3 Ties.  That translates to a game won/loss record of 35-11.  This Saturday the Marlins were 1 point shy of qualifying for the Gold Bracket as they were hampered by the loss of Sr. Captain Colleen Loftus who did not play until the last game of the morning pool play.

In the Silver bracket playoffs the Big Fish clearly dominated their opponents with the full squad back in place, although a strong run by Julian Wargo's John Glenn HS gave the Marlins a wake up until they figured out how to shut down Glenn's outstanding middle hitter.

Scores for the morning pool play were:
Won vs. Franklin 25-19, 25-15
Lost vs. Brighton 25-17, 14-25 (placed 2nd in gold)

JV Marlins Take Gold at Mt. Morris
September 8, 2007
After a heart breaking lost to Churchhill last weekend in playoffs at the Ann Arbor tournament, the JV Mercy Marlins came back this week to win their 2nd tournament at Mt. Morris!  Earlier in the tournament, pool play went extremely well and the Marlins finished 1st in their pool defeating Brown City, Mt. Morris, Clio, and Parkway Christian with a record of 8-0.

In the first round of playoffs, Mercy faced
Brandon and played fantastically, defeating them in two games.  In the championship match, Mercy found themselves playing Mt. Morris again!  The game started out a little rocky and the Marlins found themselves several points behind.  After some fantastic bump, sets, and spikes, they came back from behind to take the first game.  Game two started out the same way that game one did with the Marlins behind Mt. Morris.  However, slowly but surely, the Marlins closed the gap and served to win the second game and the championship!  The JV team ended the day undefeated and with their first tournament win! Great Job girls!

After going undefeated in the pool play with a record of 8-0, the team went into the semi-finals against Brandon and had to kick it up a notch.  With an easy first game win, and a very close second game, with a score of 27-26 victory, the team proceeded into the championship match against Lake Orion.  After losing the first game, the team got it together to win the second game.  In the third "tie breaking" game, the girls ended up winning an intense match 15-11.  By showing no mercy the ladies achieved their goal of the tournament: to repeat as Mercy Freshwoman Invitational Champions!!  Congratulations Mercy Frosh volleyball on a perfect 6-0 day!!

Big Fish Take Over Blue Devil Tournament!
September 8, 2007
The Big Fish are lurking in the Michigan Volleyball world more like silent sharks - ready to quietly strike at any moment rather than the high flying Marlin mascot that represents the team.  This weekend the Varsity Marlins took first place in the Grosse Pointe South Tournament, even without the complete services of two of their senior starters.  Coach Ed Moeller describes the team as extremely consistent, hard working, and having lots of depth.  The depth was obvious this weekend as Sr. captain Kelsey Doyle only saw action in the first 2 of 6 matches and fellow Sr.Kathryn Gardner, a mainstay of the Marlin defense, was injured in warmups, and the Marlins still ran the table winning all 6 matches without dropping a single game!

Coach Moeller pointed to the very steady play of Mackenzie Bickes as setter, Katie Jenereaux in defense, and Sarah Wojcik and Andrea Conover as hitters, all turning is exceptional stats.  "There was absolutely no drop off in intensity or consistency as these girls came into the game" Moeller happily reported.  This bodes well for the Marlins for the upcoming season.  Coming off a very close 3 game loss to Marian in last week's Gold round championship match, the Marlins may be the most underestimated team this season.
