NEW PICTURES FROM MASSAPEQUA TOURNAMENT

The Long Island Astros Proud To Present 10U Migs Squad
MIGS ASTROS FINISHED THEIR ENTIRE 2008 SEASON WITH AN OVERALL RECORD OF 26-15-1. COACHES JOE M., ROB J., JOE L. & TERRY T. ARE EXTREMELY PROUD OF OUR BOYS FOR THEIR EFFORT & ATTITUDE IN THEIR FIRST SEASON TOGETHER.

MIGS ASTROS STARTED THEIR SPRING SEASON IN NJBL. THEY STARTED LIKE GANGBUSTERS AT 7-1. A DIFFICULT LOSING STREAK INCLUDING AN 0-3 NT MEMORIAL WEEKEND TOURNAMENT WITH THREE 1 RUN LOSSES ENDED THEIR SPRING SEASON 7-10.

AFTER A DELAY FOR SUMMER BALL DUE TO WILLIAMSPORT COMMITTMENTS, THEY RAN THROUGH THEIR NT BASEBALL DIVISION WITH A 9-2 RECORD BEFORE LOSING IN THE SEMI-FINALS TO A VERY TOUGH HICKSVILLE TEAM TO FINISH THE SUMMER WITH AN OVERALL 9-3 RECORD.

THEY PEAKED IN THE FALL SEASON WITH THE HIGHLIGHT BEING THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME LOSING TO MASSAPEQUA IN THEIR FALL TOURNAMENT WITH THE TYING RUN CUT DOWN AT THE PLATE TO END THE GAME. THEIR PLAY IN THIS TOURNAMENT INCLUDED TWO WINS AGAINST A VERY GOOD NORTH BELLMORE-NORTH MERRICK TEAM AND OTHER IMPRESSIVE WINS AGAINST ROCKVILLE CENTRE AND MASSAPEQUA. THEY THEN RAN THROUGH THEIR NT FALL SCHEDULE WITH A 6-1-1 RECORD LOSING ONLY TO EAST ROCKAWAY AND TYING GARDEN CITY.

THE IMPROVEMENT WAS OUTSTANDING AND THEIR COACHES LOOK FORWARD TO A BREAK OVER THE HOLIDAYS BEFORE GETTING BACK TO WORK AFTER THE NEW YEAR LOOKING TOWARDS 2009. WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE BOYS FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING PLAY AND THEIR PARENTS FOR BEING BEHIND US EVERY STEP OF THE WAY AND THEIR COMMITMENT.

DOUBLEHEADER

(Migs Astros 11 - Levittown West 2)

Migs Astros completed the doubleheader sweep and their strong finish to the 2008 campaign with a convincing 11-2 win. Paul T. got stronger with each inning and his change-up was outstanding. Pat Q. pitched the fourth inning and gave up no runs. Johnny L. finished up with two scoreless innings in the fireman's role as the Astros broke open a 5-2 game in the later innings. Lucas G. was the hitting star and many other hits were banged out throughout the game.

(Migs Astros 12 - Levittown West 0)

Mike S. was the story in this game. Mike threw a no hitter and only allowed one walk the entire game. His dominant performance was needed with the Astros bats only producing 1 run before the fourth inning. They broke open the game in the fourth and fifth with many hits and great baserunning before finally putting the game away 12-0. Big hitters today included Lucas G., Gerard C., Michael P., Dean M., and Kyle OD. The Astros played most of the game with eight players and that shows how dominant Mike S. was on the mound.

(Migs Astros 4 - Garden City 2)

In a close affair played mostly in steady rain, Migs Astros gained a key victory against the previous second place Garden City Villagers. The Astros tied Garden City earlier in the season and this game looked like it was heading down the same path with the same result and the same score as their previous game. However, Migs Astros staged a well executed rally in the sixth put two runs on the board to pull out a 4-2 victory.

Lucas H. took the hill in a very deserved start and did not dissapoint the Astros faithful. Lucas was very effective with his electric stuff into the fourth inning. During this time, the Astros had built a 2-0 lead. Lucas ran into a little trouble in the fourth when Garden City roped a two run double over leftfield to tie the score. With the weather conditions worsening, Paul T. alias "The Mudder" came in with the go ahead run on second. Paul put out the fire with a grounder back to him to end the threat. Another scoreless inning under bad conditions led to the Astros key inning in the top of the sixth. Jon Q. worked out a walk to open the inning. Here came the key play of the game. Paul T. laid down a perfect bunt that the Garden City pitcher threw away with a slippery ball to set up second and third. Nick. J. provided a very productive out on a grounder to score the go ahead run. Another run crossed before the inning ended to make the score 4-2. Paul T. provided his third inning of scoreless relief to induce two pop-ups and a grounder back to him to end the game.

Great defense from Dean M., Nick J. behind the plate, Eric M. as short, & Johnny L. at second and third base.

(Migs LI Astros 4 - Cedarhurst 2)

Migs Astros completed a very successful day with a sweep for the day. After a shaky 16-9 victory against Freeport, they rode the arm of Mike S. to a tidy 4-2 win vs. Cedarhurst. Relief from Johnny L. sealed the victory. The Astros stole 2 runs in the first on with Nick J. & Mike S. stealing home. Pat Q. hustled out a hit in the fifth for an RBI and the significant run of the game. Other highlights were:

Mike P. 2-2
Dean M. 1-2
Lucas G. 1-2
Mike S. 1-2 Steal of home 5 1/3IP 1 ER 2 hits 8K's 4 BB's
Johnny L. 2/3 Innings Pitched

(Astros 16 - Freeport Storm 9)

In a wild scoring affair between the Astros and the tenacious Freeport Storm, the Astros had to come from behind after squandering an 8-1 lead to win 16-9.

The Astros started their doubleheader day in Freeport. The Astros put forth an early run in the first inning on an RBI single from Gerard C. Behind Paul T. on the mound, they lead after three innings by a score of 4-1. They broke the game open by the fourth and lead 8-1. Then shades of the Tampa Rays set in. After Freeport started their fifth with an on base error, Paul T. tired and gave up 2 runs before leaving with the bases loaded and only one out with an 8-3 lead. Eric M. came in to relieve and had trouble locating the strike zone. After couple of hits, walks, and sloppy fielding, the Astros found themselves down entering their last at bat down by a run 9-8.

Late arrivals Nick J. & Michael P. sparked a seven run rally with base hits. After consecutive hits from Lucas H., Dean M., Lucas G., Eric M. and Gerard C. (a 3-3 day), the Astros came back to take a commanding lead 16-9 entering the bottom of the sixth. John Q. settled in to pitch the sixth after allowing two no out walks before retiring the side with an excellent cath in left field from his brother Pat Q. All in all, a happy win to start off the day. They travel back to their home field for a same day afternoon game against a tough Cedarhurst team. They Astros upped their record to 2-1-1 in league play.

(Astros 2 - Garden City 2 in 8 innings)

Migs Astros and Garden City played a very riveting game and both came a way with a tie after 8 innings. The Astros led 2-0 scoring early. Behind excellent pitching from John Q. who went 4 innings allowing 2 unearned runs, Garden City scored two unearned runs in the middle of the game to tie it.

The Astros scored a run in their first with Kyle OD on base with an hit. He came around to score on a Mike S. RBI single. The Astros tacked on another run in the second inning with a two out double from Eric M. He scored when John Q. reached on an error from the pitcher as Eric M. came around from second base to score.

In the meantime, John Q. was excellent on the mound throwing strikes and inducing ground balls to the infield. An unearned run in the second stood up into the fourth when Garden City scored another unearned run. His line of excellent pitching included allowing only three hits with 4 K's.

Mike S. was scoreless over the next four innings with 6 K's allowing three hits. He also pitched out of a bases loaded no outs jam fielding a bunt and tossing to Nick J. at the plate for a force out and then K'ing the next two batters.

The Astros had many chances to push along the go ahead run over the last four innings stranding ten baserunners over the last four innings.

Hitting stars were Kyle OD with 3 hits, Mike S. with 3 hits and Eric M.'s double.

(ASTROS 10 - BALDWIN 2)

The Astros had to come back the next morning at 9AM to play in their NT League after a gut-wrenching loss to end their run in the Massapequa Tournament. They slept walked through four innings at bat finding themselves down 2-0 against Baldwin. Paul T. pitching with two broken fingers on his right hand (lucky he's a lefty) threw 3 shutout innings until the fourth when a bout of wildness found him with the bases loaded and walking a run in. Johnny L. relieved and walked in one more batter before stopping the bleeding down only 2-0.

In the fifth, the bats finally woke up with hits from Johnny L., Dean M., Kyle OD, Lucas H., Lucas G., Michael P., & Gerard C., and Eric M. Before it was all over, the Astros had put 6 runs on the board to go ahead 6-2. They later tacked on another 4 runs in the sixth to coast to a 10-2 victory to go 1-1 in NT Fall Season. Michael P. led the way with 2 doubles and 3 RBI's.

(MASSAPEQUA CYCLONES 4 - LI ASTROS 3) in Massapequa Fall Championship Game

A thriller in Massapequa. As this tournament has had it's share of thrilling games, this championship contest was no exception. The game came down to the Astros Luke H. coming around third base heading home with the tying run after Kevin O. lined a double in the top of the sixth with the Astros down 4-2. With one run in already ahead of Lucas, he was waived around as the tying run with two outs. Perhaps the Astros best baserunner, Lucas H. rounded second towards third and Coach Terry knew it would take a perfect cutoff and throw to the plate to cut Lucas H. down. As it turned, out, give credit to Massapequa for making those perfect two throws and cut down the tying run for game ending play as the Cyclones prevailed 4-3. Absolutey a heartbreaker, but all game the Astros had their chances.

Eric M. pitched a quality game and deserved a better fate. The Astros struck first as they scored in the first innning for a 1-0 lead. They held that lead until Massapequa went ahead 2-1 in the third inning. The Astros should have escaped that inning with no runs, unfortunately a play at first base for the third out was not completed and two runs came in shortly after that. Massapequa would tack on two more runs to go ahead 4-1. The Astros wasted two opportunties with the bases loaded when they only scored one run over two straight innings. By the fourth inning, Johnny L. came in and stopped Massapequa from scoring any additional runs and the Astros entered the top of the sixth down two runs and 4-2. Once again, the Astros mounted an attack and put runners on first and second with two outs. Kevin O. came to the plate and battled their pitcher with constant foul balls including one foul that just missed the chalk for a double. He finally laced a ball towards center field that scored one run and saw the game ending potential tying run thrown ot at the plate.

This was a great game. The Astros played extremely well throughout the tournament and beat perhaps the best team NBMN twice to get to the final game. Highlights throughout the tournament included Johnny L. with outstandng relief pitching and our best hitter throughout the tournament. Kevin O. threw a gem vs. NBNM. Mike S. also was outstanding on the mound in relief to save two of the wins. Lucas H. was outstanding defensively along with Dean M. and Eric M. Kyle OD had many clutch hits as well. This tournament was worth the effort with many close and exciting games.

Paul T. has suffered two broken fingers. He will be unable to pitch in the Championship Game as he was the slated starter. We wish Paul well and he will most certainly be in uniform rooting for the Astros for the Championship Game and we applaud his pitching efforts throughout the tournament.

SEMI-FINALS

Astros 2 - NBNM 1

The Astros have gained a berth in the finals of the Massapequa Tournament. They had to face the tough NBMM Rebels for the second time in this Tournament. Fortunately for Migs Astros, the results were the same.

Kevin O. was at the top of his game on the mound for the Astros. He was dominant throughout the contest and lasted into the fifth inning. Johnny L. was once again the spark of this tournament offensively opening the game on the first pitch with a sharp single up the middle. Kyle OD lined a single off the first baseman's glove into right field for the first run of the game in the first inning. Two runs in the first inning held up behind Kevin O. on the mound. Stats on Kevin to follow, but he was magnificent. Pitching into the fifth, he walked two batters and left second and third on base and one out and a run in. This is where your spell relief in M I K E S. Mike S. came in nursing a one run lead with the tying and go ahead run in scoring position. Facing two batters who repeatedly stayed in the box fouling off pitches with great cuts, Mike S. fanned them both to preserve a lead into the sixth. He then K'd all three batters in the sixth to preserve a 2-1 win and catapulted the Astros into the finals where they will definately face a Massapequa team, either the Cyclones or Yankees. Great defensive work from Kyle OD behind the plate, Johnny L. at second base, Gerard C. in right and Lucas H. in centerfield. Excellent hitting from Kyle OD, Michael P., & Johnny L.

WOW WOW WOW

(Massapequa Cyclones 3 - Astros 2)

Where do we begin with Sunday. Talk about your downs and ups. Beside the Mets disappointing their faithful, they Astros faced the same emotions after game one on Sunday.

The Astros had to play the Massapequa Cyclones and then finish a game later on facing a 6-4 deficit in the fifth inning of a continuation game. The Astros hoped they could take care of business against the Massapequa Cyclones and make the make-up game a mute point in this tournament, but unfortunately they played flat. The Astros bats were dormant most of this game as they lost a very heartbreaking 3-2 game. Paul T. took the mound and ran into trouble in the very first inning giving up two runs. He wasn't sharp but held up fairly well allowing only one more run that the Astros defense probably could have avoided. The Astros finally woke up in their fifth and scratched out two runs to close that gap. Unfortunately, they left two on base in that fifth inning. Johnny L. pitched the fifth holding Massapequa. The Astros mounted another threat leaving the tying run at third base and lose a crushing 3-2 game. Michael P. has two solid hits including a long double and Johnny L. a scorching double were the only hitting highlights. Pat Q. offered up a sliding catch in right field and Dean M. snatched a potential two run double with a diving defensive stop at third for an out to keep the score close.

(Astros 7 - Massapequa 6)

Losing this game was a huge blow to the Astros playoff hopes. Now they faced losing two games in this tournament to eliminate them from playoff contention. They had to travel to another field and continue their game vs. the Massapequa Yankees down 6-4 at bat with the bases loaded and one out. Paul T. came up big making contact on the very first pitch to hit a sharp ground ball between short and third for a fielder's choice and an RBI. Gaining back one run was big and Mike S. had a quick one-two-three inning on the mound and the Astros faced tournament elimination. Nick J. led off the bottom of the sixth by working out a walk. Mike S. looped a single into left field and the Astros now had first and second. Dean M. came up and hit a grounder to third base that Massapequa misplayed looking for a force at third base. Nick J. came around and scored the tying run and Mike S. pulled up with the winning run now on third base. After Kyle OD lined out for the first out in the inning, Massapequa intentionally walked Lucas H. to load the bases. It was Gerard C.'s turn to be a hero. Memories of Gerard's walk off homer in early spring against the LI Mud Dogs came to mind as Gerard deposited the third pitch way into left center field to score the dramatic winning run and the Astros wiped away their earlier loss to finish the tournament regular season with a 3-1 record and should insure a playoff spot. Coming back in this game wiped away the earlier crucial loss and showed these Astros have heart in coming back.

Wedenesday Tournament (Astros 8 NBNM Rebels 4)

The Astros knew they were facing perhaps the toughest team in the tournament, the NMNB Rebels. A win here with the Massapequa game still to be decided would be huge. After a long wait to start the game, the Astros quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Nick J. sparked that inning by getting on base and later was driven in by a Kyle OD single. Kevin O. took the mound and the Rebels struck back to go ahead 3-2 and later tacked on one more run. Kevin O. pitched a gutty game throughout and kept the Astros to within two runs before he left in the bottom of the fourth. Kevin showed a lot of heart on the mound and held a very good hitting team in check. He gave way to Mike S. who needed 3 pitches and a strikout to end another NBNM threat in the fourth.

Pitching:
Kevin O 3 2/3, 4 runs, 6 hits, 4 k's, 3 bb
Mike S. 2 1/3 0 runs, 1 hit, 2 k's, 1 bb

Hitting:
OD 2-2, Mike P. 2-2, 1 RBI
Gerard C. 1-2, 1 RBI (big hit) John Q. 1-2, 1 RBI (big hit in the 5th)
Pat Q. 1-2 1 RBI (big hit in the 5th)
John L. 1-2 3 RBI (biggest hit of the game, 3 run double)

extra stuff:
Mike S. reeking havoc on the bases
Eric's excellent defensive plays at short.
Lucas H. great catch in center
Pat/John Q. great game ending catch

All throughout the game tha Astros displayed patience at the plate and were able to build up NBNM lefty ace's pitch count. He had to leave after 4 innings and the Astros were able to mount an attack on their reliever capped by Pat Q.'s very timely hit with the go ahead run. Previous to that, his brother John Q. brought the tying run in with a fielder's choice. Mike S. pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth and the Astros went to work again. They loaded the bases before Johnny L. once again in this tournament came up with the bases loaded and delivered. Johnny "Clutch" delivered a bases clearing double into right center to give the Astros the cushion they needed. Mike S. gave up two hits in the bottom of the sixth. Pat Q. snared a towering fly in right and Eric M. made an incredible over the shoulder catch from short in the outfield grass to seal the win. Eric M. had a terrific night at shortstop making one key play after another. Lucas H. had another great play in center with an over the shoulder catch. Defense, good pitching and very key hits were the ingredient in a come from behind thriller against NBNM.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS..............The Astros will have a chance to replay their loss from Sunday's Tournament. A decision from the Massapequa Tournament Director will allow the Astros to resume their game in the fifth inning from the point of an accidental pitching rule infraction. At the time of the infraction, the Astros were down 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning with one out bases loaded and Paul T. at bat. The game will
be completed from that point to completion.

Additionally, after the completion of the above scenerio, Migs Astros will take on the Massapqua Cyclones at 8PM at Burns Park. They also play this Wednesday Sept. 24th at 5:30PM against the NBNM Rebels.

SUNDAY Tournament

Migs Astros lost a heartbreaking 6-4 game to Massapequa. The Astros led through 4 innings 4-1 behind the masterful pitching of Paul T. Paul only threw 45 pitches through four innings and was cruising allowing only 3 hits with 3K's. The Astros up to that point had played excellent defense including Lucas H. with a sliding catch in center, Eric M. with a strike from leftfield to cut down a runner at home with a great plate defense from Nick J., and other infield plays from Mike P. at second. Kyle OD had the key hit in the game for the Astros up to this point. Unfortunately, a bunt single and an two errors led to two runs when Paul T. was replaced by Kevin O. with the score still 4-2. Unfortunately, shoddy defense by the Astros allowed Massapequa to gain a 6-4 lead that was never relinquished. The Astros two out rally that put runners on first and second fell short. Hitting stars were Kyle OD 2-3 with and RBI and Lucas H. with 2-3 and 2 RBI's.

SATURDAY (Astros 14 Rockville Centre 4)

Migs Astros took on Rockville Centre in their Massapequa Tournament opener. Paul T. took the mound and a series of bloop hits and errors led to 4-0 deficit in the first inning. Paul left after 18 pitches to preserve his status in the next game if needed. The Astros chipped away with one run in the bottom of the first. They eventually came back to tie in the third inning. The game belonged to Johnny L. who took over on the mound and pitched over three shutout frames. Johnny kept the Astros in the game and handed the rest of the way to Mike S. However, not before getting the key hit in a ten run inning with a triple with the bases loaded to puch the Astros ahead. They game was shortened due to a run rule and the Astros came back to post a 14-4 win. Timely hitting all around with more details to follow.

Migs Astros will compete in the 10U Massapequa Tournament this weekend. They face Rockville Centre this Saturday at 3:45PM at Burns Field in Massapequa. They will also face host Massapequa Yankees at Burns Park the next day Sunday at 1:00PM.

They take on the NBNM Rebels on Wednesday Sept. 24th. at 5:30 at Burns Park and again Friday evening vs. Massapequa Cyclones at 8PM at Burns Park.

Migs Astros welcome Michael S. from Seaford's Williamsport Team and Lucas G. from Carle Place's Williamsport Team. Michael S. was Seaford's pitching ace in the summer. Lucas G. is a power bat and outfielder. Glad to have them aboard. for the Fall season. They also welcome back Kevin O. for the Massapequa Tournament, another strong hurler from Oceanside who should help fortify the pitching staff for the tournament.

GAME # 1 NT Baseball Fall Season

Migs LI Astros 10u were defeated in their Fall opener 5-2 against the East Rockaway Rocks. The Rocks were the summer champions on NT Baseball. Migs Astros led the game 2-0 into the bottom of the fourth inning behind the superlative starting pitching of newcomer Mike S. They managed to squeak out 2 runs without any hits. Mike S. was dominant through the fourth inning when in the fifth inning a couple of crucial errors led to a 5 run inning by the East Rockaway Rocks. That fifth inning determined the ballgame as they lost 5-2. Very few hitting highlights in this game. The strong pitching of Michael S. carried the Astros until the fateful 5th. inning.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Migs Astros wrapped up a successful summer season with a 9-3 league record in NT Baseball. The highlight of the summer season was a showdown between 9-0 Cedarhurst and the then 6-0 Astros. The Astros defeated Cedarhurst in a convincing 9-2 victory. Unfortunately, the Astros played their first playoff game without key players due to vacations and were defeated by Hicksville in the first round.

Migs Long Island Astros had a very eventful Spring 2008 Inaugural season. Starting off 7-1 in their first NJBL session, they proceeded to tail off and end up 7-7. However, they were extremely competitive in all of their games and competed against very solid squads including the LI Astros White, Hicksville Hurricanes, and LI Mud Dogs. In a Memorial Day NT Baseball tournament, they lost two games by one run and one game by two runs.

More importantly, these boys forged friendships and their love of playing baseball thrilled their coaches.
