BBQ Outlaws Team History
The BBQ Outlaws team was formed in the spring of 2005 and received a sponsorship from the Ol' West BBQ restaurant in Clinton, NJ. The Outlaws played a great first spring season in the AAA league going 18-2 and finishing first in the regular season standings. In the playoffs, the Outlaws lost a close second round game and finished up 3rd overall. Which was not to bad for the first year in the league and the first year back playing ball in years for nearly the entire team. Coming back for the Fall season, the Outlaws jumped up a league to the AA which combined with the A league for the short season. The Outlaws finished the regular season in 3rd place with a 6-4 record. In the playoffs, the Outlaws won their first round game then had to travel to Jersey City that same day for the 2nd round game. The Outlaws faced a tough #1 seed Jersey City Brewers team and lost in a close game.
In the '06 Spring season, the Outlaw's stayed in the AA division. On the eve of the season, the team was rocked by tragedy as friend and teamate Anthony Cuccio was suddenly lost in an accident. The opening of the season was delayed for the Outlaws to grieve the loss of the Anthony. The 1st game back was a emotionally charged night game with all of Anthony's family and friends in attendance. Prior to the start of the game, BBQ vowed to play the season for Anthony and win the championship. With a strong start to the season, BBQ was well on the way. But BBQ fell on tough times mid-way thru the season and were questionable on whether they would make the playoffs. Recalling their vow to Anthony, the team made a major surge at seasons end for the playoffs and finished the regular season at #2. BBQ earned a bye in the 1st round and won decisively in their semi-final game. All preseason predictions had the BBQ vs Middlesex Reds in the finals, and thats what it would be for these rivals. BBQ won game 1, then lost game 2. In the series finale, BBQ won to take the league championship in one of the best games played in the ABA.
