TYLER ARNOLD DELIVERS AT GEORGIA/TENNESSEE ALL STAR CLASH!!!
June 10, 2009
Arnold's perserverance pays off with MVP honors

For the past decade or so, I have had the privilige of working closely with the Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Series. It's something I truly enjoy being a part of and something I take a great deal of pride in being able to help with. More than just trying to determine who's better when it comes to high school sports in southeast Tennessee and northwest Georgia, these games were created with the purpose of rewarding high school graduates with the gift of one final game. It's one final opportunity to suit up and hear the roar of the crowd and experience the thrill of that one final basket, goal, touchdown or homerun. Over the years, I've gotten to see close to 2,000 local prep athletes play in these games. For some, college and possible collegiate athletics are the next chapter in their lives while for others, it's most likely the last time they will ever play the sports they love so much. But for Calhoun's Tyler Arnold, his experience in the Tennessee-Georgia series was a much different one than the rest of the players who participated this past week. The 2008-2009 season was supposed to a memorable one for the Yellow Jackets' 6-foot-4 sharpshooter. Arnold was coming off a junior season that saw him win just about every honor available, including All-Region and All-State First Team selections, Northwest Georgia Tip-Off Club Team Player of the Year honors and inclusion on the Cass Holiday Hoopfest All-Tournament Team and the Rome News-Tribune All-Area Basketball Team. He scored 20.5 points per contest that season and grabbed over eight rebounds a game. He shot 54 percent from the field, a whopping 46 percent from behind the arc, and a slid 76 percent at the free throw line, all of which led his team. But a knee injury suffered in preseason practice this past fall robbed Arnold of virtually his entire senior campaign. His only time on the court came on Senior Night as it was arranged for him to enter the game and score his final two points in a Calhoun uniform. "It was a really tough loss for us as we lost our best scorer, rebounder, shooter and post defender all in one person,” Calhoun head coach Casey Baxter told the Calhoun Times. "We thought it would be great to get Tyler one last time on the court as a tribute to what he meant to our team.” Arnold went through the required surgery and rehab and just last month, he signed a basketball scholarship to continue his career at Piedmont College. But Arnold's high school story didn't end there. A short time later, the call came that Arnold had been chosen to play in the All-Star Basketball Classic, and suddenly, what was the final game for every other graduated senior truly became the long-awaited first game of Arnold's senior year. He and the rest of Team Georgia got off to a slow start in the first quarter on Tuesday. His hard plastic knee brace was slightly sticking out from under his basketball shorts, and sitting courtside and seeing how fast and physical the game was getting, I began to wonder (and even worry just a bit) that perhaps a game of this intensity may not be the best thing for a kid coming off major knee surgery with a college career still ahead of him. But at the 4:45 mark of the second quarter with his team trailing by eight points, Arnold buried a 3-pointer, then flashed a smile mixed with relief and excitement. One minute later, he scored another basket to pull Georgia to within three and the crowd began to cheer even louder. Another three at the start of the second half sliced the gap down to two points and suddenly Arnold looked nothing like a kid who was limping around crutches just a few months earlier and having to watch from the bench. He was finally playing basketball again. Not just going in for his token bucket and coming right back out, but really playing the game he loved. By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, Arnold was all over the court, scrapping and diving for loose balls and banging inside the paint for rebounds. The Georgia squad was feeding off his energy as they stormed back from seven points down in the final three minutes. His teammates weren't the only ones getting fired up either. In the stands a few rows behind the bench was his mother, Tabitha Arnold, screaming and clapping and dancing with every made basket, every big rebound and every defensive stop. And when the final horn sounded to signal an 88-86 Georgia victory, Arnold sprinted to the Georgia bench and jumped high into the air to chest-bump a teammate in celebration. He finished the game with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds and was later named as the game's Most Valuable Player. Oh, and did I mention he also won the 3-point shootout at halftime, hitting a remarkable 11-of-15? "This all feels good, it feels really good," Arnold said afterward. "It's surprising because I didn't really know how I'd play. I was on the beach on a senior trip and I hadn't touched a basketball in a week and a half, but I just decided to come out here and have some fun and it turned out good. Tonight definitely made up for lost time. This is more than I could ever hope for or even dream about." And as for his team's incredible fourth-quarter comeback? "Coach (Glen Hicks) just kept preaching to us to play hard and that's what we did," Arnold explained. "We just kept playing hard and it paid off in the end."

CHS SOCCER PLAYERS MAKE ALL AREA!!!!
May 30, 2009
At Calhoun, the varsity soccer teams have made a habit out of scoring often and keeping their opponents from even getting near the goal. The 2009 Rome News-Tribune Soccer Players of the Year personify the Yellow Jackets’ and Lady Jackets’ efforts to continue that habit. Calhoun boys goalkeeper Josh Gregory and Calhoun girls midfielder Julia Binnicker are the captains of the 2009 Rome News-Tribune All-Area Soccer teams. Each player provided some of their team’s best performances this past season and helped them sweep the Area 13-A/AA titles. Binnicker, who recently signed with Jacksonville State University, has been named to the All-Area squad every year of her high school career and proceeds former teammate Katie Scott as RN-T Girls’ Player of the Year. The senior stepped up after a string of injuries forced the Lady Jackets and head coach Randy Rice to change their overall scheme on the field. Binnicker scored 12 goals and recorded 12 assists this season, bringing her career total to 49 goals and 57 assists. She has been a part of four-straight area championships. “Julia was the heart of this year’s squad,” Rice said. “Injuries depleted our offense to the point that we became a defense first, counter-attack second team. Julia coordinated this attack perfectly.” Gregory played a major role in both helping Calhoun set the new school record for most wins in a season (16) but also the most shutouts in a season (13). The Yellow Jackets and the senior had only four goals scored against them the entire season, including the state playoffs, including a 4-0 shutout of Lovett in the opening round. Calhoun went on to score 78 goals total. Here’s a closer look at the boys who made the All-Area Boys’ team: Michael Butler, Calhoun One of the most powerful forces on the area’s most powerful team, Butler was named the team MVP after helping the Jackets post a 16-1-1 record and outscore their opponents 78-4. Butler was a team captain and started all 18 games. Miguel Moreno, Calhoun Moreno established himself as one of the premier scoring threats in the state by amassing a whopping 25 goals, which accounted for almost one-third of Calhoun’s total during the team’s phenomenal season. Javier Salazar, Calhoun An unselfish player with versatile skills, Salazar led Calhoun in assists this season while helping guide the team to the Area 13-AA/A title and a berth in the second round of the Class AA playoffs. Here is a closer look at the girls who made the All-Area Girls’ team: Britt Gallman, Calhoun Referred to as “the enforcer” by head coach Randy Rice, Gallman was a pillar for the Lady Jackets. The senior fullback/sweeper scored four goals, giving her 17 goals — along with 15 assists — in her career.

CHS BASEBALL SEASON ENDS IN ELITE EIGHT AGAINST DUBLIN!!
May 20, 2009
The CHS Baseball season came to an end Tuesday afternoon at the hands of the Dublin Irish by scores of 10-4 and 5-1. The Jackets didn't play its best ball and it came back to bite them at the hands of a very gritty and talented Irish squad, The Jackets made 5 errors in Game 1 which lead to 8 unearned runs and a 10-4 defeat. The bright spots came from Senior Witt Amick who threw 2 scoreless innings of relief and Juniors Mott Hyde and Carter Harrison who both had Homeruns with Carters being a 2 dinger day in the defeat. The second game saw the Irish Starter, Zach Mullis, keeping the Jackets at bay all game with 10 strikeouts. The Jackets did receive an outstanding pitching performance from Sophomore Landon Curtis who gave up only 2 earned runs in 6 innings. The bright spot on the offensive side came from Junior Michael Johnson and Freshman Josh Schubert who contributed multi hits games in both contests. Shubert also made two spectacular catches in the field. The Jackets finish the season as Region 7AA Champs and a 27-4 overall record.
The Jackets will return a ton of talent for next year when Juniors 1st Baseman Jordan Poole, Shortstop Mott Hyde, 3rd Baseman Michael Johnson, and Centerfielder Blain Steely return for their Senior Campaigns. The Jackets will also have talented Sophomore Landon Curtis and Junior Brett Walraven back for a run at a title. The Jackets also have one of its best classes in its Freshman class as was seen by Austin Norrell and Josh Schubert. The class has even more talent that will be counted on to make a run at another Region Championship and hopefully a long state run.
The Jackets will be losing 4 talented Seniors as 2nd Baseman Daniel Mcarthur Heads to West Georgia, Rightfielder Chaz McCormick heads to Georgia, Catcher Riley Hall and Witt Amick head to Young Harris College to further their College education. These Seniors will be greatly missed as they leave behing 3 straight Region Championships, a State Runner Up, and an Elite Eight appearance.

CHS GIRLS TRACK FINISHES SEASON!!!!
May 18, 2009
For the 13th year in a row Calhoun girls stood on the medals podium at the state track championship.
Kylie Hardesty finished as state runner up in the discus
It was a good end to her prep career. She's had so much bad luck at state that it was good to see her throw consistently and so focused.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Poole finished 6th in the shot put with her career best throw, adding two feet to her region performance. We worked incredibly hard on her form over the last 10 days. I told her that if she did all the little things right, it would land where she wanted it to. We are very impressed with her improvement and future potential. If she sticks with it and continues to work hard, she'll be standing a lot higher on the podium in future years.
Region news:
Once again region 7-AA medaled in 14 of the 16 events in track (3rd year in a row). Statistically we are still the second toughest region in the state (behind 6-AA with the metro private schools). Our region girls stood on the medal podium 18 times, representing 7 schools. We had girls who stayed home who could have medaled in the finals
Top teams finishes:
Gordon Central 5th place
Adairsville 6th place
Calhoun 13th place
Rockmart 15th
Sonoraville 16
th
Individual state champions:
Sarah Talley Shot put and discus (state record in shot)
Shamira Barret of Adairsville repeated as state champion in the 200 meters
General observation:
Wow! The level of competition this year was absolutely amazing. There have always been outstanding girls at this meet, but this year the overall quality of competition was mind boggling. Times girls were medaling with five years ago would not have made it though to the finals this year. A few years back, we won a state championship in the hurdles. This year that time would have finished 5th. It seemed like every prelim was a photo finish. Statistics tell us that girls track is the fastest growing sport in the nation. It was evident this weekend. I've never seen so many tightly contested races in my life.
CHS BASEBALL TAKES ON DUBLIN TODAY IN ELITE EIGHT!!!

Calhoun coach Chip Henderson said his team is approaching the next stage of the postseason with focus and drive.
“We’ve been involved in a lot of close games this year — not just in the postseason, but even well before that — and I feel like that has given our team a boost of confidence,” Henderson said. “They know they can come from behind if they need to.”
Henderson said his club’s past playoff experience will be a big benefit, as the Calhoun seniors make their second appearance in the quarterfinals.
“Oh, it’s huge,” said Henderson. “The kids will know what to expect in this situation, and won’t be bug-eyed when they take the field. That’s a big plus.”

CHS BASEBALL ADVANCES TO 2ND ROUND!!!
May 9, 2009
The CHS Baseball team advanced to the 2nd round of the GHSA State AA Playoffs Friday afternoon when they swept the visiting Rebels of Fannin County, 6-5 and 14-5. The First game saw Carter Harrison taking the mound and throwing a complete game, as he went 7 innings, giving up 5 runs, 4 earned, with 7 hits, 4 walks, and 3 strikeouts. The Jackets jumped out top 3-0 in the bottom of the first when Daniel Mcarthur, Michael Johnson, Mott Hyde, and Jordan Poole strung 4 consecutive hits together for 3 runs. The Jackets held that lead until the top of 5th when the Rebels stormed back with a 4 spot to take the lead, but as all season has been, the Jackets came right back in the bottom half scoring two on a 2 out run 2 run scoring double by winning pitcher Carter Harrison which plated Hyde and Poole. The Rebels weren't done as they tied it in the top of the 7th on a Seth Mcclure double, but that just set up an exciting bottom of the 7th as Michael Johnson doubled, then after an intentional walk to Hyde, Jordan Poole steped up and drilled a game winning single to give the Jackets the 6-5 victory. Poole Finished the game 2 for 2 with 2 walks and 2 rbi's to lead the Jacket attack.
In the second game, the Jackets took the lead early and added on until they secured a second round berth by crushing the Rebels 14-5. Winning Pitcher Austin Norrell through 6 innings giving up only 2 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 3. CHS BASEBALL VERSUS HEARD COUNTY PLAYOFF BREAKDOWN!!
May 11, 2009
The #2 Ranked CHS Baseball team will be playing #6 Ranked Heard County Braves in the second round of the GHSA Class AA State Playoffs this Wednesday May 13th starting with a doubleheader at 4:00. This is a great matchup in the second round and will have many intriguing twists to talk about. The First is, these two teams met in last years playoffs as the Jackets defeated the Braves in the First Round, by sweeping them 11-0 and 12-0. The Braves are much improved and will bring in 11 seniors that will be battle tested from three straight years making the playoffs. The Braves have averaged 10.0 runs a game this season compared to the Jackets 11.3 runs a game and the Braves only allow 3.3 runs a game compared to the Jackets 3.21. These two teams numbers are almost identical as both have hit about the same amount of homers, doubles, and triples. Both teams are also batting about the same with the Jackets bringing in a .401 average comapred to the Braves .389. The Jackets E.R.A. is 2.55 while the Braves are 2.65.
Both teams have solid pitching with the Jackets throwing Carter Harrison, Landon Curtis, and Austin Norrell at teams while the Braves counter with 3 seniors as they throw Tyler Cash, Clint Lowery, and Wesley Cannon. The Jackets can really hit the ball with several players hitting over .400 for the year which includes Daniel Mcarthur, Michael Johnson, Mott Hyde, Carter Harrison, Chaz McCormick, and Zach Bradley while the Braves counter with .400 hitters: Tyler Spradlin, Bryan Dunson, Brandon Manning, Jake Yates, and Tyler Cash. Both teams have power hitters as the Braves send out Tyler Spradlin and Wesley Cannon to do their bopping while the Jackets send Mott Hyde and Jordan Poole to do theirs.
Both teams have had really good wins as the Braves beat Callaway and Shaw and showed what kind of a team they have when they beat a 6AA team, in Decatur, for their first round victory. CHS FOOTBALL HOLDS SPRING GAME!!
May 13, 2009
The 2009 CHS Football Team went through its spring game Tuesday night before a very good crowd at Phil Reeve Stadium. As in most spring games, the defense was ahead of the offense as many Jackets showed their prowless. Leaders on defense during the game were Kedron Aker, Josh White, Jacob Young, Gus Roberts, Josh Worley who returned an interception for a Touchdown, Derick Collins, and Hunter Knight who was a madman on defense making nearly a dozen tackles and a fumble recovery. The offense had their moments as Nash Nance and Ben Lamb made several nice completions with the biggest two being a 34 yarder from Nance to Da'Rick Rogers and a 41 yarder from Lamb to Jacob Young. Jacob Young also turned in a nice 16 yard run which was one of the better runs of the day. David Collins and Tony Hernandez both turned in 14 yard runs. There were several players missing the spring game due to Baseball or Injuries, but this gave a chance for the younger players to show what the future holds at Calhoun. The kicking game looks to be in good hands as Adam Griffith made 2 long field goals and Blaine Beavers punted quite well.

May 4, 2009
The CHS Baseball team will play the Fannin County Rebels this Friday at Jacket Stadium starting at 4:00. here is a breakdown of this first round matchup:
2009 Records---- Calhoun (23-2, 21-1) Fannin County (14-7, 10-5)
2008 Records---- Calhoun (21-5 lost to Lovett 2nd Round) Fannin County (16-10 lost to Lovett 1st Round)
2007 Records---- Calhoun (29-4) lost to Holy Innocents in State Final) Fannin County (18-8 lost to Dunwoody 2nd Round)
State Championships---- Calhoun (4--last one 2005) Fannin County (1-- 1963)
Region----- Calhoun (7AA Champs) Fannin County (8AA--3rd)
Coaches---- Calhoun (Chip Henderson) Fannin County ( David Lunsford)
Top Pitcher---- Calhoun (Carter Harrison--- Jr. ) Fannin County ( Seth McClure--- Sr.)
Top Hitter------ Calhoun (Mott Hyde--- Jr.) Fannin County (Nick Dean--- Jr.)
Breakdown----Both Teams were knocked out by Lovett last season with Fannin being in the 1st round and Calhoun in the 2nd Round. Calhoun won Region 7aa and are ranked #2 in the coaches poll and #1 in the sportswriters poll. The Rebels finished with the #4 seed after losing to North Oconee and Banks County in last weeks 8aa tourney. The Rebels will throw Seth McClure at the Jackets in one of the games Friday and Seth can be tough as he is 6'7", so he throws down hill at batters. He also has good control and is a very polished pitcher. The Jackets will counter with top pitcher Carter Harrison who throws hard and has a good curve ball. The Jackets hit the ball better as they average 11 runs a game to the Rebels 7 runs a Game. The Pitching seems even as the Jackets give up around 3 runs a game while the Rebels give up around 4. The Rebels defense is solid like the Jackets, but like the Jackets have given up alot of unearned runs. The Rebels will produce a speedy team that could cause the Jackets trouble if they are not focused. Both teams are pereneal playoff teams which should produce an outstanding atmosphere this weekend!!

May 1, 2009
In what could be described as a disaster of a game defensively, the Jakcets staged a huge comeback and beat the very tough Indians of Chattooga County Thursday afternoon 8-7. The Jackets committed 8 errors which lead to the Indians 4 unearned runs and to a 6-0 lead going to the top of the third, but that is when super hitting Mott Hyde struck for a towering three run Homerun that sliced in half. The Jackets then saw Austin Norrell, Daniel Mcarthur, and Michael Johnson produce run scoring singles in the 4th to knot the score at 6. Carter Harrison kept the Indians off balanced and pitched a complete game on his way to his 6th victory of the year with no losses. The Jackets took the lead for good in the top of the 6th when Mott Hyde singled in Daniel Mcarthur and then in the play of the night a heads up Michael Johnson scored the eighth run when the pitcher dropped the ball that was thrown back from the catcher. This eighth run prove crucial as the Indians mounted an attack in the bottom of the 7th scoring a run on a throwing error, but Harrison kept big hitting Brandon Black down for the last out and the Jackets won sending their record to 23-2 on the season. The Jackets will travel to Ringgold to take on the Tigers in the Regular season finale. #4 RANKED CHS BOYS SOCCER ADVANCES TO 2ND ROUND OF STATE!!!
April 25, 2009
Calhoun soccer is no stranger to the state playoffs and on Friday the boys’ team rolled by visiting Lovett 4-0 in the first round.
“We prepared throughout the season for the state playoffs,” said CHS head coach Ruben Maldonado. “We also went to see Lovett play against West Minster earlier and that obviously paid off for us.”
The game, which was rescheduled due to a thunder storm on Thursday, went back and forth in the first few minutes, with the ball rarely coming in contact with the ground.
After the onslaught of high kicks and headers, Calhoun managed to take charge and score their first goal on a penalty kick by Miguel Moreno. The shot was set up after he was pushed in the back on a corner kick.
However, Moreno was just getting started in the game and added a second goal in the first half, after beating the Lovett keeper and then hitting a well placed shot over the keepers head.
“Miguel is an awesome player and I knew he would be the playmaker up front,” said Maldonado. “He is a good finisher and has the potential of being a big time player at the next level.”
With his back against the goal, Alex Martignon fooled every Lovett defender around him by kicking the ball over his head, into the penalty box, and hitting Moreno in stride for the assist.
The Yellow Jackets went on 3-0 in the first half when Arturo Rodriguez scored on a cross by Moreno.
In the second half, Calhoun dominated most of the play, though Lovett wasn’t without their opportunities. As the half drew to a close both teams began substituting their starters, with both teams eventually getting down to their second string.
Abraham Rodriguez scored the final goal for the Yellow Jackets on a long shot from midfield that sailed just over the Lovett keepers head.
The defense played another outstanding game as they recorded another shutout on the season. The team has scored 77 goals total and only allowed two. The Jackets are undefeated on the season.
The team will play in the second round of the state playoffs on Tuesday at Athens Academy.

CHS SCHOLARS WIN NATIONAL AWARDS!!
April 13, 2009
Both of our national scholarship semi-finalists, Miss Kathleen Edwards and Mr. Hunter Hammond, have won the national scholarship. 873 seniors submitted applications, 317 students were selected at semi-finalists and 215 won the final award. This achievement marks the first time that CHS has won both scholarships; in fact, out of four total applicants in the last two years (the first two times we have graduated seniors), three have won the award.
While the finalist data table has not been completed, we know from the semi-finalist news release that only 43 Georgia seniors made the semi-final round and only nine Georgia high schools had both nominees make this round. The competition limits the total number of applicants from each school to two.
Again, this recognition speaks very highly of the past and current educators of these kids and the status of our chapter has certainly been embellished with the leadership and dedication of Hunter and Kathleen.
Also, Megan Nesbitt was selected as an alternate two weeks ago for the Appalachian Regional Commission/Oak Ridge National Laboratory Summer Math Science Technology Institute. 2009 marks the fourth consecutive year that CHS students have won this internship.
