    TOPSoccer Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
    TOPSoccer Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

"Opportunity for All to Play the Beautiful Game"

    Q: What is TOPSoccer?
A: TOPSoccer is a Division 5 program designed specifically for players with physical and/or mental disabilities.

Q: How does Division 5 differ from Division 4 (Recreational)?
A: There are a number of ways the divisions differ:
    · Players with assistive devices and wheelchairs can participate because this division allows modification of the playing rules.
    · Teams can be built around player ability, not age.
    · Players who need assistance on the field can have a "Buddy" partner who can help them participate.
    · The club/program is allowed to modify playing rules so they are flexible and designed to allow the highest level of participation by players.

They are similar in that players have the opportunity to play the beautiful game and have LOTS OF FUN!

    Q: What is a Playday?
A: A playday is a sort of one-day soccer festival/jamboree that is free to players with special needs and is not a league. It allows players to try out different soccer games and drills under the direction of qualified coaches. Buddies are available to players who may need extra help on the field.

Q: What is a TOPSoccer Buddy?
A: Buddies are specially trained helpers who assist players on the field to participate in games/activities. They do not "play" for the player, they help players actively participate. Most buddies are soccer players (boys and girls), and understand the game and are trained to optimize the special needs player's participation. Parents/Guardians and Caregivers are allowed to be Buddies with their own player, but are encouraged to just sit back, relax and watch their kids have fun playing soccer. However, if relaxing is not your "cup of tea", we could always use your help in keeping TOPSoccer running smoothly in other ways.

Q: Is their an age requirement for players?
A: Yes, players must be between the ages of 5-18 years of age.

Q: Are there physical limitations that would keep my player from participating?
A: TOPSoccer attempts to be open to all players with physical and/or mental disabilities. It is up to the parent/guardian/caregiver to disclose to the club any conditions that may put the player at risk while participating. A special medical release is NOT required and you will not be asked to provide information other than a standard registration/waiver form at playdays or standard CYSA Registration for league. The club does maintain the right to determine if a player's disability or behavior may be a danger to themselves or other players and preclude them from participating.

Q: Will TOPSoccer play in the fall with the recreational clubs?
A: The intent is for TOPSoccer in Elk Grove to participate in league play with team formation, coaches, practices, uniforms and game schedules. This will be determined by the volume of participation on playdays and general interest by the community.

Q: How much will it cost to register my player for TOPSoccer?
A: Playdays will be free to all special needs players. League play cost will be kept at a minimum. The club will have to register with CYSA if we participate in a league format, and would need to pay any fees associated with membership. Much of the cost will be deferred by donations and sponsors. Elk Grove is very fortunate to have many generous organizations and businesses in the area that will assist us.

Q: What kind of equipment will my player need?
A: All players will be required to wear shin guards. Cleats are optional. Uniforms will be used when participating in league play. T-shirts will be provided for playdays.

The TOPSoccer program is fully supported by the Elk Grove Youth Soccer League.
