Announcing Our Players of the Week!
|
Week #6

We met with Coach Joe after the match and he commented, "Our game against La Puente
went well for us. We were able to jump out to a quick lead and our defense once again
pitched another shut out. Our defense has been solid all year and has held our
opponent scoreless in almost all our games. Good job coaches."
"Sergio Brito was named player of the week for the second week in a row and that's
something we have never done. The game he played Saturday was one of the best
I've ever seen at this level. He had three interceptions and two were ran back for
touchdowns... WOW, that's a season for some players! Sergio was just all over the
field and again he is counted on every week to do so much for us. As a captain he
is asked to lead on the field and he does it time and time again."
"Eric Mendoza played a great game and was a big part of our win on both sides of the
ball. He has been our most consistent player on our offensive and defensive line.
Eric is a gifted player who is always in the right place at the right time. He is one of
my three-year players and is a joy to coach. I will miss him next year but I know he
will do great things up at the Gremlin level and continue the 'Gold Rush' way."
"John Anthony Velasquez is our big 7. He had a little bit of a slow start this season
but has been coming on fast these last couple of weeks. He has hit his stride and
is now showing us what we as a staff knew was there but just needed time to mature.
His play on the defensive line has picked up big time while his play on the offensive
line has gotten more and more consistent. We are all very excited to see him
continue to grow. He will be our big 8 stud next year."

Week #5

In our interview with Coach Joe, he said, "Our game against Hacienda Heights was a tough
one. We played well and in the end showed them how you play the "Gold Rush" way."
"Sergio Brito again showed why he is so important to this team on both sides of the ball.
He continues to be our feature back and other teams know it and still can't find a way
to stop him on defense. Brito and Garcia continue to stop everything up the middle.
Brito has been an outstanding player for us for three years and as the season passes so
quickly the reality of losing him next year to the Gremlin begins to become more real.
Although the Gremlin coaches can't wait, we surely could use him for another season... or two...."
"Jesse Bruyneel is another 'stud 8' and a 3-year player for us. He has been our most
consistent player on defense and has become our lock-down cornerback. We look for the side
a team favors or a player they like to throw to, then we put Jesse on him and that's it -
we don't have to worry about that player anymore. Jesse locks down that side of the field.
He makes coaching so much easier for us. He also is our other feature back as our flanker and
plays that side just as tough. We will be sad to see Jesse leave us. His attitude is the best.
He never complains and is always ready to play 100% either in practice or game. He has been
a joy to coach and I know he will keep on doing great things the rest of his Dons career."
"Jacob Lopez is one of our little 6's and continues to get better every week. He has a
toughness that is perfect for football and along with our other tough sixes they are
gonna be a bad bunch of boys next year! We are excited to see Jacob's improvement week
by week. We look forward to his growth and can't wait to see what the future holds."
"Jimmy Ordonez is our true little one. He started out the year not really wanting to follow
in big brother's shoes but has started to show signs of growing and getting the feel
for what we are doing out there. Jimmy is always positive and continues to try and work hard."

Week #4

Coach Joe felt that the game against El Monte was a game they were able to control
early and it allowed them to get their little ones in early and more often. He
said, "They played their hearts out and played great. We feel this was a little
insight to Gold Rush's future and the future looks bright."
"Noah Perez is one of our 7's and is transitioning from our tough little 6 of a year ago
to an 8 that will be counted on big time next year. We feel he made strides in that
direction Sunday. He played a lot of center and did a great job for us. Noah doesn't
get a lot of snaps during the week but when we called on him he did an awesome job."
"Joseph "Lil" Bruyneel is one of our Super-6's. He has some big shoes to fill with his
brother on the team and we think he's going to do just that. He got to play a lot of line
and did a great job for us. He will be counted on a lot next year on both sides of the
ball. Joseph is a kid with a great attitude - always ready to play and give 100%. He's a
joy to have on the team and we can't wait to see his growth over the next few years."
"Julian Olvera is another Super-6 and is our tough one. He's growing and getting
stronger everyday and will eventually be our enforcer. His 'never-back-down
from a match' attitude, even when it's an 8 he's going against, is something
that can't be coached. You either have it or you don't. We are excited as coaches
to take that and coach him into a special player. Julian is our center and got to
play both guard and center Sunday and did a great job for us."
"Alfredo Benitez is another Super-6 and also another tough one. He is always going
against bigger kids both in games and practice and never backs down. He will be a
solid player for us in the years to come. He is a joy to have and the improvement
from day one to now is big and is why we can't wait to see his progress in the next
couple of years. Alfredo played tackle on Sunday and he played a great game for us."

Week #3

Coach Joe told us that the Whittier game is always a big game and this year was
no different. "Their Gold Team is their top team and we played them tough all
the way. I was really proud of our boys. They battled the whole game and played
like champs. The players of the game are Sebastian Garcia and Mario Cervantes."
"Mario Cervantes has been a solid force for us this year. He has been our anchor
stud on the offensive line and our most consistent pass rusher on defense.
Mario had to work really hard this year to make weight and he put in a lot of
extra hours of conditioning and running. It was a tough summer for him but with
the help of his family and coaches he did it and continues to work as hard as
anybody out there. Mario's hard work is why he was selected to be one of our
captains this year. He played an awesome game on both sides of the ball for us
against Whittier and was a big reason why we did so well."
"Sebastian Garcia is one of our 8's that is asked to do it all for us. He is one of
our captains and I often tell him this is your team because you've earned it. He's a
3-year starter and the best Jr. Gremlin quarterback the Dons have. Sebastian
played an awesome game against Whittier - his passes were great and his command
of the game was perfect. He played just as well on the defensive side as our stud
linebacker. He shut down Whittier's run game from sideline to sideline. It will be
sad for me to see Sebastian leave this year but it will be great news for the Gremlins."

Week #2

We spoke with Coach Joe Gonzales after the second game of the season and he said, "What a game, we had
everything - good offense, good defense and even last second scoring! It was our most exciting game so
far. Our players of the week are Eric Mendoza, Gabriel Rodriguez, Dominick Torres and Brian Ventura."
"Eric Mendoza continues to give us solid play from whereever we put him. Being one of our stud 8's,
we count on him all the time and I think Saturday was one of his biggest games. He scored
two touchdowns and one of them was in the last seconds to win the game. Eric has always run
that guard around play well and his eyes always light up when I call it in the huddle."
"Gabriel Rodriguez is another one of our 8's that must come through for us this season because we are so
young overall and Saturday he did just that. Gabriel played his best game for me at offensive guard - he
pounded his man all day long, never letting his man through the line. His man did not have one flag all
day. It was a great job from start to finish and nobody was happier for him then our coaching staff."
"Dominick Torres is one of our super 7's and as coaches we look for kids with good motors -
that's a kid who just keeps going from the start of the play to the end - and Torres is the best.
Dominick plays on the defensive line and is usually outweighed by 15 to 20 lbs. and still he
is constantly in the other teams backfield causing havoc he just never gives up and never stops.
He is a huge part of our team and will be the main part next year for us."
"Brian Ventura - aka Sunshine - we call him that because he always has a great attitude at practice and
always shows up with a smile. Brian reminds me everyday why we are out here to have fun and teach
these young kids some fundamentals and then watch them grow into young football players. We were all
excited for Brian as he got his first flag on defense and I'm sure it will be the first of many in his career."

Week #1

In his first interview of the season, Coach Joe Gonzales told us, "First of all, let me
say that this season has come upon us very quickly and ready or not, here we go.
Our "Players of the Week" in our first game against the El Sereno Stallions are
Sergio Brito, Andrew Ortiz, Jesse Bruyneel and Marcus Ordonez."
"Sergio Brito is a huge part of what we're doing this year and he picked up right
where he left off last year playing solid defense, running the ball with great control
and getting in that end zone. Sergio will be counted on over and over to get us
to where we want to be as a team."
"Andrew Ortiz is new to our team this year and has picked up our system on defense
very quickly. He has already become a big part of the defensive unit and played
a great game Sunday. Andrew has also been plugged in on offense and is contributing
big time for us scoring a touchdown in his first game with the Gold Rush. We believe
that's a great sign of big things to come."
"Jesse Bruyneel - all I can say is Jesse is one of the toughest kids we have on this
team. He never complains and he never gives up. He was sick most of the week
and was not feeling 100% on Sunday but he never asked to come out. When I asked
him how he was feeling he would say 'fine' even though I knew he was not. Jesse
played great defense and like I said, this kid is one of the toughest we have."
"Marcus Ordonez is one of our 7's that we have to count on big time this year.
We put a lot of responsibility on him playing corner back. It's not a position we
usually give to a 7-year-old but Marcus is one of those special players who is
always going to do great things out there. Sunday was no exception - he was great
all day on defense and we know that this will be the case all season long."
