Where can I find out if my child is eligible to play at KCYBL ?
All boys and girls and from the 2nd Grade through the 6th Grade are Eligible to participate in our League. We will also take children in the first grade if they have skills that allow them to dribble and pass the basketball and follow simple instructions (such as playing man to man defense). There are two types of players that are ineligible to play for KCYBL. The first is any child who plays on a 6th Grade Middle School team is ineligible because of SSAC rules. The second is any child who lives outside of the Horace Mann Middle School district and has already played in a different League that participates in our All-Star League.

Why don't the teams practice more ?
We have limited Gym time available to our League. Horace Mann Middle School Administration has been great in allowing us to use their school. Once the basketball season starts at Horace Mann we only have the Gym on Saturdays and Sundays. Each team must find its own gym in order to practice during the season.

Who is the league President ?
No one really knows since he or she has never been identified. However, if you have any questions please contact Mike Ranson or Wayne McCoy. They can get a message to the President and get a response to your question. Mike and Wayne rarely agree with the President but they abide by his or her decisions.

What size ball is used ?
We use a women's sized ball for all grades. This size ball is used for this age group by most amateur organizations and our All-Star League.

How does the cheerleading program work ?
We would like to put together one cheerleading squad for each grade. They would then cheer on a random basis for the various teams during the season. The goal of the cheerleading program is to prepare for the All-Star season which starts the First week in February. During the All-Star season our cheerleaders support the All-Star teams for each grade and compete against the other cheerleading squads from other teams. Three sets of Trophies are awarded to cheerleading squads during the All-Star season. Cheerleaders are graded during the regular season; during a separate Cheerleading competition and during the All-Star Tournament.

What does my child get for the $40.00 fee ?
Each child gets a full basketball uniform (you have to return it at the end of the season). Each game is officiated by two registered officials. In fact our officials can often officiate high school games. We have approximately 13 games and we have a season ending tournament. Each child receives trophy at the end of the season once they return their uniform. Everyone who tryouts will be placed on a team. Each team is required to play every player at least 6:00 for each game and a child must play in each half. Each child is also eligible for All-Star selection.

    What is the All-Star Season?
The Kanawha City Youth Basketball League is a member of the Kanawha Valley Youth Basketball League. This League is comprised of 13 other Leagues throughout Kanawha, Putnam and Jackson County. Our regular season closes the last weekend of January and the All-Star season starts the first week of February. We select a 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade All-Star team which consists of 10 players from each grade which are selected by the coaches. The All-Star season consists of 13 games followed by a double elimination tournament.
