2010 Football Registration FAQ's
REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED FOR THE 2009 SEASON.
Who is eligible to register in 2010? The La Cañada Gladiators is open to local girls and boys ages 6 to 14 as of December 31, 2010. Their league age will be their age on 12/31/10.
In addition, football players must fall within the required weight limits for their age. Please check our weight chart here: Weight Chart
Scholastic Requirements: Each participant must attain and maintain a minimum grade average of 2.0, based on the last regular semester report card issued prior to certification (summer school make-ups in same subject OK). A 2.0 must be maintained throughout the season. Failure to maintain a 2.0 throughout the season renders a participant ineligible and no refund will be issued. The Gladiators will not accept any form of “scholastic probation” for any participant in any division.
All participants must submit a Conference Grade Report to their Head A.D. in October (Your Head A.D. will give you the form). Reports must contain a minimum of five (5) grades and a verified teacher’s signature. All academic grades, plus P.E., will count and must average a 2.0 or better. Each Head A.D. must verify these grades and submit them to Conference. Any participant not submitting a Conference Grade Report or failing to maintain at least a 2.0 G.P.A. will be declared ineligible for the balance of the season, and no refund will be issued.
What do I need to register my child? A signed, full-form application and payment in full must be completed between March 1, 2010 and before May 30, 2010. In summer 2010, new players/cheerleaders will need to provide an ORIGINAL birth or passport (which we MUST keep until certification is over); on July 19, ALL players must provide a June/end-of-year 2010 ORIGINAL report card (which we keep until after certification).
Do we need a physical? Do you have a form? Yes, ALL players and cheerleaders must pass a physical exam FOR THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF CHEER OR FOOTBALL within 3 months of the first date of practice. You may visit your own doctor or see ours on Equipment Handout Day in July, 2010 for under $30. If you visit your own physician, you need to have your doctor fill out this form, and return it on or before the first day of practice. Or, your doctor may write a letter on letterhead (NOT ON A PRESCRIPTION PAD) that says, "(Name) is eligible to participate in TACKLE football/FLAG football/Cheerleading) for the 2010 season." No child may begin practice without an MD signed physical form.
Do we have to live in La Canada to play? No, you may live in La Canada, La Crescenta or Montrose; our "exclusive" recruiting area; special semi-exclusive areas of Pasadena and Altadena; or any of the "OPEN" territories in our recruiting area without a SGVJAAFC team. That includes Tujunga, South Pasadena, San Marino and more. PLEASE SEE OUR MAP HERE: (Boundaries) before registering. If you live in a franchise area that does not field a team in your division (i.e. Glendale and Pasadena for Midgets), you may register for LC Gladiators regardless of residence.
Do you make cuts from teams? Per SGVJAAFC rules, all Gladiator tackle football teams are limited to 33 players on the final team roster as of Certification Day. Each squad may recruit up to a total of 40 players per squad before the beginning of the practice season. Some squads do not recruit a full roster of players, and some players drop from each team for a variety of reasons. There remains the possibility, however, that cuts will have to be made in order for a football squad to reduce its team roster to 33 players prior to Certification Day. (Note: this rule does not apply to flag football. There are never any cuts made to reduce the 20-man flag roster.)
The decision to cut any player rests in the sole discretion of the team’s coaching staff and the Gladiator Executive Board, but that the following factors are considered critical in determining cuts: (1) safety issues; (2) attendance at all practice sessions; (3) attitude and respect toward the coaching staff and other players; (4) following instructions (including maturity/ability to follow instructions). Great football skills are not a determining factor for cuts.
I heard my child can't be cut if he lives in La Canada Flintridge. The bottom line is that safety and participation are our primary concerns. Players FROM ANY CITY who demonstrate a significant reluctance to participate in tackling and contact drills, or those who exhibit a propensity to exaggerate injuries, or those with extensive absences will be cut (if cuts are needed) no matter where they live.
When is your season? Our season begins LATE JULY, 2010, and continues until the middle of November or later. Cheer teams MAY compete in post-season competitions through February, 2011.
When and where are practices? Football and Cheer practices are five days a week beginning late July. They are usually held from 5:30 to 7:30 at La Canada High School or another local field. Following Labor Day, football practices drop to three days a week, days to be determined by each Head Coach. Cheer teams practice two or three days a week after Labor Day, and often attend a gymnastics session off-site once a week.
Why so many practices? Per SGVJAAFC Rules, to "certify" for playing, each football player must have 10 hours of physical conditioning in the Head Coach and Head AD's presence; in addition s/he must have 10 hours practicing in pads under the same conditions. After an initial conditioning program, cheer must learn many routines and cheers to be ready for games and possible competitions.
When and where are games? Games are played on BOTH SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS due to the availability of CIF refs. Your child must be able to play either day, although there is only one game per weekend per team. Home games are at La Canada High School's Varsity field; away games are scattered throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
We have a vacation planned for August. Is that a problem? As a family organization, Gladiators realizes that family vacations and functions may sometimes conflict with the practice schedule. However, attendance at practice, especially in August, is of paramount importance. Each hour of practice is counted towards qualifying for pads and certification, so each absence makes make-up time exponentially more difficult on players and staff. If you have an extended vacation planned for July or August, 2010, we suggest you consider joining a team another season.
What is Certification Day? What happens if we miss it? Certification Day is a day-long MANDATORY event in late August, 2010, where all football teams from all SGVJAAFC leagues go to "certify" their paperwork. FOOTBALL PLAYERS MUST BE PRESENT TO WEIGH IN (CHEER DOES NOT ATTEND IN PERSON). It will be held at Glen A. WIlson High School in Hacienda Heights, time TBD. Absences on Certification Day disqualify a player from any and all contact, pads, scrimmages and games until make-up Certification (if any) is held, possibly weeks later.
What equipment do you provide? The only two REQUIRED purchases for football will be a mouthpiece and football cleats; Jr. Gremlins will also need a pair of soft volleyball kneepads. All other items, including all pads, helmet, practice + game uniforms and girdle (tackle only), will be provided. Cheerleaders will be provided everything they need, includings shoes (warm-ups optional at additional cost).
The MOUTHPIECE must be molded rubber and may be any color EXCEPT CLEAR OR WHITE. We sell mouthpieces for $1.00 at the snack bar, or they can be purchased at any sporting goods store. A spare is recommended. CLEATS must be molded rubber soles, with NON-DETACHABLE, pliable cleats (NO METAL CLEATS). Cleats can be any style-high-top, medium-top or low top, though most coaches prefer some ankle support. Football (not soccer) cleats are recommended.
