League Rules
May 1, 2006 - 12:00 AM --
Minnesota Inline Hockey follows the rules of USA Inline. Unlike ice hockey, inline hockey does not allow any contact except incidental and accidental and it is up to the referees to determine otherwise. Please click on the following link for USA Inline rules.
www.usahockey.com/inline/main/rules/inline_officialrules
Here's the big three to remember:
1. No fighting and be respectful of the refs (don't be surprised for a penalty for swearing at the refs). Both USA Inline and USA Hockey have tightened up their rules on contact with other players. Inline has always been more restrictive than ice hockey so a lot of contact that happens in ice may be called in inline games.
2. Must play in three regular season games to be eligible for playoff (who wants to get to a championship game and find out the other team has brought in ringers, seriously)
3. We all have to work the next day, if your not here for fun, please don't play
4. If you play in the Gold league, you can't play in the lower silver.

1. Marketing & Fundraising
With the assistance of inline hockey leagues nationwide, USA Hockey InLine has compiled a working list of marketing and fundraising ideas that have proven to be successful. The list will be continually growing as we ask league administrators how they market and promote their programs. The intent in creating this list is to share it with all leagues throughout the country. We are hopeful that sharing ideas between leagues will make the sport successful as we all move forward. To receive a copy of the document or to add your marketing or fundraising suggestions, please contact USA Hockey InLine at info@usahockeyinline.org.

6. National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association
The National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association will be hosting its prestigious 2006 College National Championships at The Carolina Sportsplex in Morrisville, N.C., April 5-9. The event will bring over 50 teams in four divisions (Division I, Division II, Division III and B Division) together to compete for the title of National Champion in their respectful divisions. The event, now in its eighth year, will make its first appearance in North Carolina. The NCRHA is excited to expose this high level of inline hockey to the people of North Carolina.
The NCRHA is comprised of seven member organizations with nearly 200 teams and 2,500 players nationwide and is the organizing body of collegiate roller hockey in the United States. For more information about the NCRHA and to follow the action from the National Championships live, please visit www.NCRHA.org.
7. State Associations
Colorado Roller Hockey Association
The Colorado Roller Hockey Association has been working together since October of 2004 and consists of inline hockey leaders in the state that meet about once a month to discuss a variety of issues concerning the sport in the state of Colorado. The CRHA has begun to schedule and plan for their second CRHA tournament series. This series will include four qualifiers throughout the fall, concluding with a final championship in the beginning of November. The CRHA has worked at developing and evolving this series into an opportunity for both recreational and competitive participants from around the state. The CRHA tournament series also allows each facility to keep more revenue that can be reinvested back into their programs and gives participants more variety by offering them a chance to play at different facilities around the state. Recently, the group met with a representative from the Colorado Avalanche in order to discuss future involvement with the CRHA. The CRHA is also working together to combine resources and group marketing ideas in an effort to expose the sport to a larger part of the state population. The CRHA is currently being used as a model for other developing state and regional associations across the United States. USA Hockey InLine believes in working together to grow and develop the sport and encourages inline hockey leaders across the nation to work together in their specific region.
Pacific North West Roller Hockey Association
On February 18, the Oregon/Washington State Association meeting took place in Beaverton, Ore. This meeting had an outstanding turnout that included many people from all different development levels. Everyone from facility owners; past, present and future recreational league directors; officials and coaches came together to discuss how to enhance inline hockey in this region of the country. This group discussed the importance of bringing new players into the sport, marketing and promoting of leagues, current tournament environment and the importance of facility involvement with traditional roller skating centers and community-based organizations. The group also talked about developing traveling trailers of hockey goods that would be used at different community events throughout the region. The trailers would be composed of everything needed to do a “mini-rink” in an effort to expose more people to the sport. This group has named itself the Pacific North West Roller Hockey Association (PNWRHA) and is currently in the process of planning its next meeting. The PNWRHA would like to involve facilities and leaders from northern California and Idaho. USA Hockey InLine would like to thank everyone who attended this meeting.
Texas/Louisiana State Association
Plans for scheduling the next Texas/Louisiana State Association meeting are currently in the works. The first meeting for this area took place Nov. 5, 2005 in Houston and was a great success. Inline hockey leaders from around Houston, Dallas, Austin and Youngsville, La. are working together to expose more players to inline hockey opportunities that currently exist and use combined resources to make each league stronger. The next meeting will focus on developing more detailed collaborative marketing ideas and will address the possibility of establishing one large equipment buying group that will work toward lessening the equipment expense barrier that many new participants face.
Florida State Association Meeting
USA Hockey InLine has announced a date and location for its next State Association meeting with Florida being the latest targeted region. Set for Saturday, April 29, the meeting is the first of such initiatives in the area to have league directors, facility managers and tournament series directors alike work together to help grow the sport of inline hockey throughout the state. This meeting will takE place at the following location and date:
Where: Terrace Sports Family Fun Center
5313 E. Busch Blvd
Tampa, Fla. 33617
When: Saturday, April 29 - 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
If you would like to host or attend a meeting and be included in e-mail updates, please contact Kevin Couture at 800-888-INLN, ext. 116 or Andrea Williams, ext. 115.
8. USAHIL's Effort to Grow the Sport Extends to China
Over the course of a three-day training course, Chinese coaches, players and referees converged on the city of Beijing for a hands-on course to improve their abilities to coach and officiate the game of inline hockey at U.S. and international standards. With this knowledge, the 15 students will return to their provinces to continue to promote the inline game. Thanks to USAHIL’s willingness to share the training material used to train U.S. coaches and officials, the course participants were able to learn material typically taught in Level One training sessions around the United States.
Though the facilities in China are not currently up to U.S. and international standards, the desire to learn and promote the game are at an all-time high. With a population of over 1.3 billion people (more than four times the population of the United States), the sport’s popularity is expected to grow quickly in the next three to five years. As the number of facilities increase and quality of rinks improve, China hopes to compete at an international level in the not too distant future. By establishing this relationship with China, USAHIL members may have the opportunity to travel to China to play, coach and officiate inline hockey games in the next few years. For more information or to view photos from the training course, click here.
9. League Profile
Asheville Inline Hockey League - Asheville, N.C.
League Director: Mark Halstead
How long has your hockey program been in place and how did it come to be? The youth hockey program in Asheville has been in place for about seven years starting with a small Salvation Army league. The league didn’t have a rink and was utilizing a parking lot at the time with makeshift boards. When it came time for the town to build a new park, meetings were held to suggest what exactly should be included and the hockey community came out in support with a loud voice and we were able to build a nice new rink as part of the Park and Rec. Department’s expansion. At that point, the Asheville Inline Hockey League board was formed. The rink would not have been utilized if it weren’t for this board’s hard work and dedication behind the scenes.
Indoors or Outdoor program? Our rink is an outdoor rink, which of course is limited by weather. In the winter we offer an ice hockey program utilizing the rink, which once again is limited by weather. The two programs have been tremendous feeder systems for one another.
How many players are part of your program? We typically have about 150 youth and around 100 adults for our inline hockey programs.
What type of inline hockey program does your organization focus on? Since we are a smaller Park and Rec. league we focus on youth development primarily. To meet the needs of our league members we also offer club travel teams which compete at different events. In order to ensure that our members have the chance to first develop necessary skills for the next level, we require all kids planning on competing with our club teams to first participate in a full year of our house league.
Describe inline hockey: Inline hockey in the south exposes not only kids but also their parents to something totally different and unfamiliar to them. From a recreation standpoint it is great to have the ability to offer a different sport and provide a different avenue for kids to find their niche.
How do you promote your league? Being a Park and Rec. organization we are able to utilize our mailing lists to send out direct mailing reminders and advertisements of the league. We typically utilize our local television channel and our community newspaper as well.
What makes your league unique? Once again, the great thing about this league and inline hockey in the south is that until we started up a league to educate and expose kids to it, hockey was something new and unfamiliar to them and their families. It is pretty unique that we have been able to consistently run a successful inline hockey program in our community given the size and location of it and it is something that we are all proud of.
Do you have any interesting facts or funny stories about your league? At this time I can’t think of any funny stories, but I would like to once again point out how the league’s biggest strength is the board members of the AIHL whom are really “the main cog that makes the wheel turn.” Although our Park and Rec. Department has a partnership with the board, the board members are the key to our successful program year after year and certainly do a tremendous job covering all basis and running the behind the scenes jobs that are necessary to keep the league operating smoothly.
Where can we learn more about the league? You can visit our web site at www.ashevillehockey.org.
10. USA Hockey InLine Forms Partnership With Pacific Cup
USA Hockey InLine has announced a partnership with Pacific Cup in an effort to consolidate tournaments and improve the sport of inline hockey in California. This partnership marks the first time the two organizations have worked together.
As a result of this partnership, USA Hockey InLine and Pacific Cup will host a joint Regional Qualification Tournament at Water City Roller Hockey in Marina, Calif., May 13-14. All teams participating in this event will automatically qualify to participate in the USA Hockey InLine National Championships and the Pacific Cup Finals.
The USA Hockey InLine National Championships will be held June 23-30 in Shelton, Conn., at the Sportscenter of Connecticut. This year will mark the first time the Sportscenter will host nation’s premier youth inline hockey national championship tournament in the 10-year history of the USA Hockey InLine National Championships.
Founded in 1992, the Pacific Cup is the largest regional roller hockey tournament series in North America. Dubbed the “granddaddy of all roller hockey tournaments” by Stan Fischler, in his book entitled, Hockey America, the Pacific Cup is the home for travel teams in Arizona, California and Nevada.
With over 250 teams competing each season, the Pacific Cup not only provides the best competition within the region, it offers a well balanced, tiered system of competition for all levels.

11. SportsCenter of Connecticut
Host of the 2006 USA Hockey InLine National Championships, presented by Easton, the SportsCenter of Connecticut is a one of a kind, year-round family sports and entertainment complex located in Shelton (one hour northeast of New York City). From its double-decker ice rinks (the only known ice configuration of two surfaces stacked atop each other in the world) to its multi-station heated and weather protected driving range, to its batting cages that make you feel like you’ve stepped into Yankee Stadium, everything about the SportsCenter is state of the art.
The 15-acre SportsCenter complex consists of the Golf Center, Golf Academy, Batter Up, Laser Tag, Paddle Lagoon and The Rinks at Shelton. “When we set out to make the SportsCenter a reality, we knew we wanted to offer only the best equipment and the latest technology in the sports we offered,” said Howard Saffan, who along with Alan Phillips are the principals behind the SportsCenter. “When we decided to add The Rinks, we decided to try something that has never been done before.”
The two rinks—200 feet by 85 feet with Crystaplex dasher boards and seamless glass, all conforming to National Hockey League standards—are layered in a 90,000-square-foot arena overlooking the Housatonic River. A sky lit atrium, limestone and maple wood décor and two, three-story elevators add to the drama. Both rinks are lined by stadium seating, one accommodating 1,000, the other 500.
A facility of this magnitude is the perfect setting for the 2006 USA Hockey Inline National Championships. As if the SportsCenter isn’t attractive enough, New England’s coastline, two of the nations’ finest Indian Reservation Casinos (Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun) and New York City might strike interest to outsiders considering this event! For more information on the National Championships and SportsCenter, please visit www.usahockeyinline.com.
12. 2006 USA Hockey InLine National Championships
The 2006 USA Hockey InLine National Championships, presented by Easton, is scheduled for June 23-30, when roughly 100 youth teams will compete for national glory in the Stars, Stripes, Patriot and newly added Street/Dek Hockey Divisions. The event will once again feature the Opening Ceremonies and Participant Appreciation Party. Each participant will also be given a voucher good for three free activities at the SportsCenter (laser tag, mini-golf, batting cages, etc.) and USA Hockey InLine will assist in organizing fun, off-the-rink activities. Easton will conduct the annual Easton Skills Challenge for all participating divisions, featuring top prizes from Easton Sports. USA Hockey InLine strongly believes in the philosophy of well-structured teams made up of players committed to that team. One-time players or "ringers" do not meet USAHIL's definition of a teammate. Therefore, all players on a team must reside within 45 miles of the team's designated practice facility. If a player's residence exceeds the 45-mile radius, contact Tournament Coordinator, Jay Milton, at (800) 888-INLN, ext. 121 or jaym@usahockeyinline.org. Indisputable evidence showing the player's commitment to the team will be required by the Regional Championships Committee. For more information on the Regional Championships, please visit www.usahockeyinline.com.
14. 2006 USA Hockey InLine National Team Open-Tryout Camp
USA Hockey InLine has announced the site and dates for the 2006 USA Hockey InLine National Team Open-Tryout Camp. Team USA will compete at the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation InLine Hockey World Championship, to be held July 10-16 in Budapest, Hungary.
USA Hockey InLine will hold the Open-Tryout Camp at Soc n’ Roll Indoor Sports Arena in Monument, Colo., from May 26-27. Inline hockey players 19 years of age and older are invited to participate in the three-day camp, which will include practices and games each day. Players will be evaluated by the USA Hockey InLine National Team coaching staff and team management.
Following a comprehensive evaluation, a minimum of two players from the Open-Tryout Camp will be selected to participate in the Main Team Selection Camp, to be held in July prior to the team departure for Budapest. The Main Team Selection Camp will consist of approximately 25 players selected from former National Team members and established inline hockey players, the Open-Tryout camp and the National Junior Program.
“We are proud to once again offer every hockey player in the county the opportunity to tryout for the inline hockey Team USA,” said Gary Del Vecchio (Colorado Springs, Colo.), director of USA Hockey InLine. “We are looking for high caliber players who can help us win a gold medal.”
Following the Main Team Selection Camp, the roster will be finalized and Team USA will conduct a three-day training session prior to departure for the 2006 IIHF InLine Hockey World Championship in Hungary.

Be The Best
17. T-Formation
From The USA Hockey InLine Age-Specific Drill Book – 14/17-And-Under
The T-formation is the original set up. Place your players in this formation and have them read and react on the forecheck. One team breaks out and the other forechecks. The defensive team tries to hem the offensive team in its own zone and the offensive team tries to get the puck out and maintain possession.
Coaching & Officiating
18. USA Hockey InLine Trains Over 100 Coaches In The Month Of Feburary
Ever wonder what USA Hockey InLine does for the sport? Still not sure? Then, check this out.
USA Hockey InLine's Zone Coaches-in-Chief held five Level One and Two Coaching Clinics across the country this past February and saw over 100 coaches enrolled in its Education Program!
Larry Wheatley, Northeastern Zone Coach-in-Chief, conducted a clinic recently for the North American Youth Roller Hockey League at the United Sports Training Center in Downington, Pa., where over 50 coaches were in attendance. This clinic was a huge success for the inline community and for the NAYRHL. Two weeks later, 15 more coaches were trained in USA Hockey InLine coaching clinics in the Northeast. If that’s not enough, Jay Milton, Southeast Zone Coach-in-Chief, traveled to Redding, Calif., to Big League Dream Sports and saw nearly 30 coaches attend Level One and Level Two clinics.
"I learned a lot since it was my first clinic and I hope to attend many more," said Robert Murphy, a first year coach for Fox Chase Renegades.
"Overall the clinic left me with a great feeling about by ability to coach in the future," said Tony Chadderton of the Pottstown Pythons.
USA Hockey InLine continues to be the leader in educating coaches across the country. Feedback from the clinic:
Name: Kean Quinton
Current team coaching: Jr. Storm
How many years have you been coaching? Eight
What did you learn or what was reinforced from the coaching clinic that will further help you as a coach?
The importance of varying your style to match that of the kids put in your trust so that they will learn not only the skills of playing this game, but the importance of teamwork, school, family and other areas in their lives that supersede sport.
Additional comments: The clinic was well run and I enjoyed the opportunity to meet with other coaches and learn new things from them.
Name: Robert Murphy
Current team coaching: Fox Chase Renegades
How many years have you been coaching? This is my first year coaching.
What did you learn or what was reinforced from the coaching clinic that will further help you as a coach? I learned a lot of different practice routines and exercises. I met a lot of nice people and learned a lot since it was my first clinic. I hope to attend many more.
Name: Tony Chadderton
Current Team Coaching: Pottstown Pythons
How many years have you been coaching? Inline Hockey – One year, Ice Hockey - Three years
What did you learn or what was reinforced from the coaching clinic that will further help you as a coach? The clinic reinforced my belief that a straightforward positive approach to coaching is the correct way. I also learned many new drills. Overall the clinic left me with a great feeling about my ability to coach in the future.
Additional Comments: It was great to meet all the other coaches of NAYRHL teams and confirms my own enthusiastic belief that this is a great venture that is destined for success. It was clear at the clinic that all coaches are on the same page. Thanks for hosting. I look forward to making new friends throughout the season.
19. USA Hockey InLine Adopts New Referee Jersey
At the 2006 USA Hockey Winter Meetings, the Zone Referees-in-Chief discussed the use of the traditional inline referee jersey. After much discussion regarding the inline referee jersey, it was determined that for all USA Hockey InLine tournaments, the ice hockey style jersey will be used. While this decision produced mixed results amongst the Zone Referees-in-Chief, they were all adamant that the use of armbands with the ice style jersey was not permitted. They all agreed that there was no reason for armbands in a two-official system and that it gives off the wrong impression when used.
This decision came after it was determined that a light weight jersey could be produced in the ice hockey style. These new jerseys are being worked on and will be available through www.OfficialsWearhouse.com as well as through ProJoy Sportswear. As in the past, short sleeve jerseys are only permitted for outdoor use and referees should refrain from using other sports officials’ jerseys, such as basketball, that have the full length zipper.
The Zone Referees-in-Chief decided that the traditional inline jersey is still acceptable, but would not be used at USA Hockey InLine events. For questions regarding this change, please email officiating@usahockeyinline.org.
20. USA Hockey InLine Officials Selected To IIHF InLine Hockey World Championships
Each year a committee discusses and selects two officials to be nominated to the International Ice Hockey Federation for the InLine Hockey World Championships. Due to the high level of officials that have represented the USA in the past, the IIHF generally takes both nominations and this year is no exception.
USA Hockey InLine would like to congratulate Don Adam (Westminster, Colo.) and Alex Morrison (San Marcos, Calif.) for being selected to officiate at the IIHF InLine Hockey World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Alex Morrison has worked at many high levels including the USA Hockey InLine Cup, NARCh Finals and State Wars. Alex also has high level ice hockey experience working for WCHL and ECHL. This will be Alex’s first appearance at an IIHF event.
Don Adam, on the other hand is a seasoned veteran to the IIHF. Don has worked World Championships, Junior World Championships and two Olympics on the ice side and has both officiated and supervised the IIHF InLine Hockey World Championships.
USA Hockey InLine is very excited for both Alex and Don and is sure they will represent the USA in a positive manner working many high level games. Please join us in congratulating both of them.
