Patriot League

The Patriot League is a tackle football league for 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 grade teams. Player evaluations will help us create balanced tackle football teams for the Patriot League. The Patriot League is comprised of multiple teams at each grade level. Our Ridge Youth Sports teams will play against multiple teams from Watchung Hills and Bridgewater area. We are part of the USA Football organization and follow the philosophy of "Fair Play."

Specific points for RYSI Patriot Football Program:

Is an instructional league designed to educate the children in proper football techniques.
Practice begins Mon August 17 w/ 4 nights a week for 4 weeks (tentative schedule at this time)
After school starts it is still 3 nights a week & game on Saturday.
There is no weight limit
All teams are based upon age/grade level.
The children will play at least 50% of the game and start either on offense or defense.
The one rule is that no child in the 5th/6trh grade can run the ball if he/she weighs more than 120 lbs,
The 7th/8th grade is the same with 150 lbs being the max to carry the ball.
We will provide all the necessary equipment for all football players.
Player must provide & wear a cup and mouthpiece
Recommendation to purchase several mouthpieces early.
No child will be allowed to play without a mouthpiece.
Cleats are recommended.
We will run an 8 game schedule with a min of 2 playoff games.
All participants receive a trophy at the end of the year.

Jr. Skylands Conference
Click Jr. Skylands to be directed to their website.

18-24 players will be selected during tryouts for both the 5th-6th grade and 7th-8th grade Jr Skylands teams. Players who do not secure a spot on those teams will be placed on Patriot League teams with players who did not tryout for the Jr Skyland teams.
There are differences between the two leagues. We urge you to review the WORD document containing information about both opportunities. Please know that the Jr Skyland League philosophy greatly differs from the Patriot League philosophy. The Jr Skyland League is one of the most competitive tackle football leagues in New Jersey. The Patriot League is competitive, but not at the same level. Jr Skyland League teams are focused on winning games while developing players. Patriot League teams are focused on player development.

Sports University has been hired by RYSI to evaluate players during the 6 day Jr Skyland League tryouts. Sports University will also evaluate Patriot League practices during the first 5 days to ensure that teams are as equally divided as possible. An itinerary from Sports University will be emailed to you next week. Although in draft form, it will give you an idea of how the tryouts and evaluations will be executed. Jr Skyland and Patriot League practices will be similar.
