COACH MUNSON
Cliff Munson hails from Compton, California where he began playing organized baseball at age nine. Coach Munson played three years of varsity baseball at Dominguez High School in Compton and was twice selected to the all Coast League team as an outfielder. Coach Munson still holds his high school's record with a .419 lifetime batting average over those three years. While in high school Munson played American Legion Baseball for the Mel Burns Ford Mustangs in Long Beach, California.
After high school he played baseball for Oregon State University, the Marine Corps team at Camp Pendleton, California and finally in the Los Angeles Dodger farm organization.
Coach Munson’s experience consists of 11 years of coaching or managing boy’s baseball and three years of coaching girl’s softball teams. 2007 will mark Coach Munson's fourth year in JBO as a coach of the North Salem Vikings. He served for two years as the Secretary of the Salem Junior Baseball Association and the Junior Division Commissioner. Coach Munson is now the President of the North Salem Junior Baseball Association. Additionally, Coach Munson is the Associate Commissioner of the Valley District and a State Board Member of Junior Baseball of Oregon.
He has chosen to coach Junior Baseball of Oregon because he likes the idea of coaching the same core group of players from age 11 through 14. He also likes the prospect of playing real baseball at an earlier age and preparing the serious player for high school baseball and beyond. The concept of playing for a State Championship as a team instead of a few players chosen as “all-stars” for post season play appeals to Coach Munson as well.
Coach Munson believes that Oregon baseball should be governed in Oregon and not by a faceless organization thousands of miles away. He believes the game of baseball and kids are most important things; a concept that is so often lost in other youth baseball organizations. Junior Baseball of Oregon believes in all those things as well.
