Nathan Faulk is a native of Columbus County born in the small town of Nakina, NC. His parents are Kenneth and Norita Faulk and brother Adam. Coach Faulk received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2000 and his master degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2005. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach in 1998 at Waccamaw Academy in Whiteville, NC under head coach Worley Edwards. Coach Edwards gave him his first coaching opportunity and both keep a very close relationship to date. In 2000, he was Physical Education teacher at Rachel Freeman Elementary School and head junior varsity basketball coach at Michael Jordan’s alma mater E. A Laney High School in Wilmington, NC. He served as an assistant under long time Laney coach Fred Lynch, who remains a dear friend as well. Faulk had the opportunity to teaching along side Ruby Sutton, highly renown and well-respected Health/Physical Education teacher who has won state and national awards in her field. His teachings in Health/Physical Education come in large part from her impact.

In addition to Faulk’s coaching duties at Laney, he coached a showcase program in Wilmington known at the time, as the Wilmington Warriors. They competed all over the nation taking part in such national tournaments as the Charlie Weber Invitational in West Virginia, the Bob Gibbons Southern Invitational in Charlottesville, VA and all Prep Plus Tournaments ran by highly regarded recruiter and evaluator Bob Smith. While assembling his showcase teams over a course of 8 years, Faulk had the opportunity of coaching 7 Division I players, 3 Division II, and 4 Division III/Junior College players from across the state from various high schools. None of Coach Faulk’s players more successful than North Carolina State University’s own Cedric Simmons who Faulk coached during the 2002 Wilmington Warrior season. Cedric was a standout at West Brunswick High School and played for veteran coach and friend Dan McGougan. Cedric went on to become the 15th pick in the 2007 NBA draft by the New Orleans Hornets and currently plays for the Chicago Bulls.

In the spring of 2004 at the age of 26, Faulk was given his first varsity high school coaching experience by being named the head basketball coach at his alma mater 2A South Columbus High School. Faulk took over a program that had been down in recent years and raised the win total each year. In his fourth year there, the Stallions achieved many firsts. They finished 2nd in the Waccamaw Conference. First time finishing in the upper half since 2002. He also guided the Stallions to the Final 32 in the North Carolina State Playoffs, also first time in the playoffs since 2002. South Columbus finished runner-ups in the 2008 East Columbus Holiday Tournament and swept four area teams, first time since 2002. He was named 2008 Columbus County Newsreporter Coach of the Year.

While at South Columbus, Faulk had the opportunity to get two of his players to play post high school basketball. Bryant Edwards, who lead the state in assists his senior campaign with over 500 for his career and over 18 points per game with 3 games over 30 during his senior season. He currently plays at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Fredrick Bryant averaged a shade over 12 points per game and took his game to Sand hills Community College in Pinehurst, NC under coach Aaron Denton.

In the spring of 2008, Faulk was named the head varsity coach at 4A South View High School in Fayetteville, NC. He was just the fourth coach in the historic history of South View Basketball. "As a coach, you look for opportunities to move up in your profession." He said. "(This is) a move to a school that’s really good, it has tradition and it knows how to win. There was no way I could pass this opportunity up," Faulk said in a press conference in late May of 2008.
