"The Macomb Daily" MAC Red Division Preview
"The Macomb Daily" 4-10-2007
County teams reload with sights set on regionals
MAC Red Division
After struggling with depth and losing several close games last season, Chippewa Valley should improve on its 13-18 record and sixth place finish in the division. Four three-year starters (Justin David, CF; Scott Deng, 1B; Dale Ross, 3B; Eric Schmitt, 2B) and their two top pitchers from last season (Andy Mulder and Andrew Oakley highlight the Big Reds roster. All the afore-mentioned players are seniors.
Greg Gay and Bobby Hush were key components to Dakota's Division 1 state football title in the fall, and will again be relied upon heavily on the diamond as they lead the Cougars team considered one of the division favorites. Dakota got off to a rough start though, losing 10-7 to a then undefeated Warren Woods-Tower (3-0) team in its season opener.
Eisenhower earned a share of the division title last season before falling to eventual state quarterfinalist Lake Orion in a district final. The Eagles beat Oxford 1-0 in their season opener behind a four-hit, nine strikeout effort from junior southpaw Jed Bradley. Base runners had better beware of sophomore catcher Griffin Jones, as he picked off two runners off first base already this season for the Eagles. Senior Matt Kennedy (RF/P) hot .378 last year.
After finishing in the middle of the MAC White last year, Ford replaces Port Huron Northern in the division this season. Pitching appears to be the strength of the Falcons, who had some pre-season injuries and lost 12-2 in their season opener to Rochester Hills Stoney Creek.
Romeo is another MAC Red squad that will rely largely on its success on the mound. "We will be as successful as our pitching and defense allows us to be," Bulldogs coach T.J. Delemielleure said. Senior Pitcher Brett Shankin will lead the way for the Bulldogs, and did in the team's opener when he threw a three-hitter and struck out seven in a 3-1 win over L'Anse Creuse North. Third baseman and pitcher Aaron Ploetz is also expected to contribute for Romeo. He tripled and scored a run in the season opener after hitting .302 a year ago.
Stevenson return six starters and all but one pitcher from last year's staff on a team that shared the division championship and won 21 games before losing to eventual regional finalist Fraser in the plyoffs. Leading the Titans will be senior Ryan Duffy, who makes the transition to catcher this season after batting .344 last year, and pitcher Dan Kollsmith who went 5-0 in 2006. A pair of juniors though, left-handed pitcher Steve Pistuno and center-fielder Trey Larocque, are two reasons the Titans are considered the favorite to take the division this year. Pistuno went 5-1 last year with a 1.72 ERA and a batting average of .356, while Larocgue batted .402 and turned in 10 assists.
Utica will field a young team this season, with nine fresh faces including six sophomores and a freshman adorning the varsity roster. Junior Shortstop Jon Nelson was named to the all-division team last year after batting .288 and senior first baseman Jake Saba displayed some power with a .271 average that included a pair of home runs and 18 RBI. Nelson and teammate Ben Orr each recorded three hits in an 8-6 win over Rochester earlier this year that improved the chieftains' record to 3-1.

Macomb County Spring Break Classic
"The Macomb Daily" 4-11-2007
Utica Splits with Ford
ST. CLAIR SHORES ¡ª For Utica, getting out of a seventh-inning jam was as easy as 1-2-3.
The Chieftains turned a nifty game-ending pitcher-to-catcher-to first base double play, preserving a 5-4 victory over Sterling Heights Ford II in the Macomb County Spring Break Classic at St. Clair Shores Kyte Monroe Park.
Of course, getting into the jam was another case of 1-2-3. The Falcons first three batters reached base on a walk, a single and a play where a Chieftain fielder threw to the wrong base.
But sophomore reliever Ben Orr redeemed himself down the stretch. Orr struck out a Falcon for the inning¡¯s first out, and initiated the game¡¯s only double-play with the next batter, forcing the lead runner out at home plate before catcher A.J. Johnson beat the batter with a throw to first.
¡°I¡¯ve closed the game one other time, and it wasn¡¯t as tough as this was,¡± said Orr, adding ¡°everything¡± was going through his mind in the heat of the moment.
¡°I was getting all frustrated, especially with the coach coming out (for a conference on the mound when Ford II loaded the bases),¡± he explained. ¡°I just had a brain fart and threw it home when there was no one going. I had to buckle down and throw strikes after that, then I had to rely on my catcher ¡ª he had to make the throw to first to double up the batter.¡±
Chieftain coach Andy Lukacs admitted Orr dug himself into a hole, but that could have happened to any youngster on the varsity roster.
¡°I don¡¯t know if he was jittery, because he was excellent in relief last week against Rochester,¡± Lukacs said. ¡°He hurt himself going to the wrong base, you¡¯ve got to be able to react and think on a play like that. But give him credit, he struck out the next guy and got the batter after that on a one-hopper back to the mound. We preach home to first on a play like that. I¡¯ve also got to credit A.J. Johnson, who made the last play of the game.¡±
Utica starter Spencer Plizga didn¡¯t have things as tough as his reliever did. Plizga allowed four earned runs in six innings, striking out five. He also had two hits, keying a Chieftain comeback. Plizga scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth, and drove in the insurance run with a double in the fifth.
¡°Spencer battled, he¡¯s getting better,¡± Lukacs said. ¡°When the weather¡¯s not great, it¡¯s hard to find a groove. I told him to stay focused and be the boss of the ball.¡±
After each team scored single runs in the third inning, Ford II (0-3) went up 3-1 in the fourth behind hits from Steve Szymanski, Ken Wichmann and Spencer Hult. Wichmann¡¯s two-out double drove Szymanski home from second before Hult scored Szymanski with a single to left.
The down-to-the-wire victory salvaged a split for Utica (4-2) in Macomb County Spring Break Classic action. Earlier in the afternoon, the Chieftains fell to Lake Shore, 6-4, as the Shorians strung together a five-run inning for a comeback win.
¡°We led most of the game, but we gave up five (runs) because we had two or three mental errors, and Lake Shore¡¯s too good of a team to give that many chances,¡± Lukacs said. ¡°Still, going 1-1¡¯s a lot better than 0-2.¡±
At the end of Tuesday¡¯s play, Lake Shore was the Group D pool leader, adding a 4-3 win over De La Salle to go 2-0 on the day. The Pilots also beat Ford II, 10-4.

Soggy conditions don¡¯t dampen Pilots¡¯ play
De La Salle rolls in tourney games.
Despite rain and cold, Warren De La Salle had an easy time in both ends of a Macomb Spring Break Classic doubleheader Thursday.
The Pilots got wins from pitchers Alex Pierse and Joe Zuccaro ¡ª both making their first starts at the varsity level ¡ª to beat Utica and Utica Eisenhower.
In the opener, junior Kevin Corbeil went 4-for-4 with four RBI and John DiLaura and Mike Hemovich each contributed two hits in a 16-1 win over Utica. Pierse went all four innings, striking out seven and giving up one hit.
In the nightcap, Johnny Martinez drove in three runs to lead the Pilots to a 5-1 win over Eisenhower. Zuccaro yielded one hit in four scoreless innings and Joe Cybulski notched the save.

After seeing two pitches in his at bat Monday afternoon in the bottom of the seventh, Kyle Alef needed to get the job done on the next pitch he saw. Alef laid down a perfect bunt down the third-base line to score the winning run and lead Stevenson over Utica in a Macomb Area Conference Red Division baseball game, 5-4. With one out in the seventh, Ryan Duffy singled and was moved to third on a base hit to right field by Steve Pistono. After Mike Wood was walked to load the bases, Alef, who also picked up the win, laid down his bunt to plate Duffy. Utica didn’t attempt a throw on the play. The Titans trailed 3-1, but Wood put them in front with a three-run homer in the third. It was Wood’s three home run of the season and his 20th RBI. Duffy finished with three hit and Pistono had two. Brad Roettger started, went six innings, allowed six hits, gave up three earned runs and struck out four.

Late-inning heroics lift Titans again
By KEVIN LOZON
Source Sports Writer
The Stevenson baseball team is slowly becoming this year’s version of the cardiac kids.
The Titans have pulled out victories with late-inning heroics on several occasions this season and did so again last Monday, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat visiting Utica 5-4 in a MAC Red Division contest.
“We’re getting good pitching,” Stevenson coach Joe Emanuele said. “We’ve only had three league games and have been behind in the fifth inning of all three of them, and come back to win them all. It says a lot about these kids working hard and they don’t ever quit.”
Kyle Alef dropped a suicide-squeeze bunt down the third-base line with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Ryan Duffy with the winning run.
“I (signaled for the squeeze bunt) because I wanted to end the game and we were in the bottom half of the inning,” Emanuele said.
The loss was another “close but no cigar” contest for the Chieftains, who fell to 0-4 in the division.
“It’s not good enough,” said frustrated Utica coach Andy Lukacs. “It’s not where we want to be and it’s not good enough. We’re not going to be satisfied until we get up over the top. Only an athlete or a competitor is going to understand that.”
Stevenson jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jared Biesbrouck doubled and scored on an RBI double by Duffy.
Utica answered with three runs in the third inning, taking advantage of two Titan errors en route to the 3-1 lead.
The inning began with Guy Burton getting hit by a pitch before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dan Baranski. Jon Nelson followed with single before Burton scored on a fielder’s choice by Mike Music who reached base when Nelson was safe on the putout attempt at second. Nelson scored on a fielding error by the Titan first-baseman, before Jake Saba scored on a throwing error by Stevenson’s catcher.
“We need to stop having one bad inning,” Emanuele said. “In all of our three league games, we’ve had one bad inning where we’ve thrown the ball around.”
The Titans answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third, taking a 4-3 advantage when Michael Wood launched a shot over the 350-mark in left-center field for a three-run homer, scoring Biesbrouck and Duffy, who each reached base with singles.
“Michael Wood is as hot as any player I have coached in a period of 45 at-bats,” Emanuele said. “He’s tearing it up and is carrying us right now.”
Utica tied the game 4-4 with a run in the sixth inning when Trevor Plizga doubled and scored on an infield error by the Titans.
Alef pitched the final two-thirds of the seventh inning, earning the win. Titan starting pitcher Brad Roettger started and went the first six innings, allowing six hits and striking out four.
“Brad threw a great game,” Emanuele said. “He battled out there.”
Offensively, Stevenson was led by Duffy with three hits, including a double, scoring two runs. Biesbrouck added two hits, including a double, scoring twice. Steve Pistono chipped in two hits, including a triple, while Wood had the big three-run tater.
The win improved the Titans’ record to 11-3 overall, 3-0 league.
Plizga, a freshman, suffered the loss on the hill, pitching the complete game, striking out two and allowing 10 hits.
“The kid is fearless and that’s what I like about him,” Lukacs said. “He’s an athlete. He’s a freshman and he’s one of our studs. He plays with reckless abandon.”
Offensively, the Chieftains were led by Saba with two doubles and a run scored.
The loss dropped Utica’s record to 9-7 overall, 0-4 league.
“You have to make your own breaks,” Lukacs said. “We had too many times today where we had guys in scoring position and we don’t get the hit when we need it.”
