Tip of the Day #1

May 7, 2010 – 09:00 AM
Hey Gang, I had this idea that instead of trying to get everyone together for a coaching clinic - something I would still like to do a couple of times a season - maybe we have a weekly tip or drill. Kind of an e-clinic if you will. Here's what gave me the idea. Jb invited me up to the high school practice yesterday and he did something that I thought was important to bring up. Simply stated "Practice like you play". Here's a couple of examples. Let's say you're practicing situations and your entire defense is in position. There's an imaginary runner on first with less than two outs. We're telling the kids to get the lead runner. Ground ball to the SS - she bobbles it and throws to second. Don't let her make that throw! In a game she probably wouldn't be able to get the kid at second. On a bobbled ball she needs to get the out. The play should go to first. They need to do this in practice. Slowly hit ground ball up the first base line. First base attacks, spins and throws to the very alert second baseman covering. If the first baseman can tag the runner that is the play. Have her extend her arms and tag the imaginary hitter. When practicing situations, I think it's a good idea to run each practice with one situation at a time - for this entire situation drill there's one out and a runner on first. Next practice new situation. Have your pitcher pitch, your catcher in full gear and you have a ball in your hand. Throw it up and hit it to all positions when the ball crosses the plate (don't forget the bunt U12). Make sure everyone is in the proper position and backing each other up. Everyone has some place to be on every hit ball. Give me some feedback on this. I don't want to waste anyone's time. If it's useful to you - or you have anything to add - let me know. Some other things I would like to cover are getting your team to communicate defensively, base running, catching or anything else you want to discuss. Let me know. Dave
