The number of practice sessions each week is up to the coach. In the weeks from when practice can begin and Opening Ceremonies/First Game, usually coaches have two practices a week; one during the week and one on Saturday. They may establish additional practices especially in the older divisions. Once the games begin it is up to the coach if he wants additional practices.
Games are scheduled the same as practices one during the week and one on Saturday. Depending on the season, rainouts and the number of teams there may additional games during the week or doubleheaders on Saturday.

The spring season typically starts with practices at the beginning of February and runs through the last week of April. End of the year tournament is played the first week of May.

How are girls selected for a team?

Player Evaluations are conducted and each girl is given a score comprised of all of the coaches the player rep for that age division and another board member. These scores are then used to "even" out the teams as the coaches select the players in the draft. The order that the coaches pick players in is determined by the overall score of the team.

Can I choose the team I want to play on?

In general, no you cannot choose your team. There is no guarantee that you will be placed on the team of your choice.

Can I request that my daughter be placed with a specific coach or friends?

In order to make the drafts for the 8U-19U Divisions as fair as possible, the League is not allowing Coach Requests at this time.

Are sisters assigned on the same team?

The default is yes, always so long as they are in the same division. If sisters are requested to be on separate teams, that request has to be made during registration.

Can my daughter play up a division?

Yes. Players may play up no more than two age divisions. (For Example an 8-year-old should not play higher than 12U ball)

Can my daughter play down a division?

In general no. However if your daughter has been playing up a division and want to go back to her correct age division that is allowed. (For example a 9-year-old who has been playing 12U can move back to the 10U group at the start of the next season.)

How will I find out on which team I am placed?

Usually the week after the draft for your division is when you should get a call from the coach informing you

How are Coaches selected?

Coaches are Parent Volunteers who have decided to give their time to teach our players and support the Kennesaw community by coaching. Once a parent decides to volunteer, he or she fills out a KGSA Volunteer Application and a Background Check. Once the Background Check is cleared, the KGSA Application is held in a file per division. At the completion of registration, player count determines how many Coaches will be needed per division for the upcoming season. The KGSA Board of Directors then reviews all Coach Applications and ranks them based on experience in softball and time with KGSA.

How many assistant coaches can a team have? Are their daughters frozen too?

Coaches can declare one assistant coach as noted on their application. Their daughter, in addition to yours, will be locked on your team.
All frozen players will have their applications reviewed and will be ranked for draft order at which they must be locked. This is to ensure fairness and parity of talent on all teams.

Do I need to provide any equipment for my daughter to play softball?

The items you need to provide are a glove, bat, shorts/pants, helmet (must have chin strap) and socks. Softball cleats (with rubber spikes) are optional but recommended, especially for the 8U and up divisions. The helmet must be worn while the batter is on deck, batting, or running the bases. When purchasing a bat see the approved softball bat on our website. The bat should come up to the child’s waist when placed on the ground next to the leg. To determine the weight of the bat, the child should be able to hold it parallel to the ground in one hand without much effort. As for the glove, it should be to close around the size ball played in their division. Please try to make sure the child can play about two years with the glove. For more detail listing please see “Equipment List for New Players” and “Glove and Bat Chart”.

It is also recommended that you have a practice ball for home use.
6U – 11” safety ball
8U - 12U – 11”
14U and up – 12”
Girls in higher divisions may also want to add knee pads and / or sliding shorts to protect them when sliding into a base.
All equipment you provide should have the player’s last name clearly marked on it.

Can my daughter wear her own shorts?

KGSA does not provide shorts as part of the registration. We ask that each team would wear on the same color. Most teams choose black, which is readily available at local sporting good stores. Shorts must have at least a five (5) inch inseam. Some players may choose to wear pants, and if so the pants must be same color as the rest of the team. The black softball pants may be purchased through KGSA or purchased separately.

Must my daughter wear her uniform to all games?

Yes, players should arrive in full uniform ready to play. Shirt tails must be tucked in.

Can my daughter wear jewelry?

No jewelry of any kind may be worn during games. Jewelry should not be worn during practice either.

How do I check on the current condition of the fields for inclement weather on practices and game day?

Ball field status is controlled and updated by City of Kennesaw, not by the Kennesaw Girls Softball Association (KGSA) Board. The most up to date conditions can be viewed at the KGSA website.

What is the parent/player/coach code of conduct?

To ensure that we fulfill the KGSA mission of creating a positive softball experience for all girls through the education of the sport, stressing on the importance of teamwork, good sportsmanship, and fun, we have re-published the KGSA code of ethics for players, coaches, and parents. These policies ensure understanding of the program goals, and the appropriate conduct expected of those involved in the program. These policies may be accessed from our KGSA website (click your appropriate link:( parent, player, coach ) and will also be distributed during the registration event for the upcoming season. These forms must be turned into your coach.

Are scores kept?

Scores and league standings are kept for the 8U division and higher. We do not keep score in the 6U. Standings are determined by team’s records. If there is a tie, placement is determined by head-to-head record of those two teams. (If Team 1 is tied with Team 2, but Team 2 won when those teams played each other, Team 2 will be ranked ahead of Team 1.)

What awards are given at the end of the season?

All players receive a participation trophy at the end of the regular season. First and second place team players receive League Championship and Runner Up trophies.

How long before the game do I need to show up?

This is up to the coach, but generally warm ups begin ½ hour before the game. A regulation slow pitch game is 1 hour 10 minutes and fast pitch is 1 hour 30 minutes.

What is the All-Star team?

The KGSA All-Star team brings together some of the top players from each Division to participate in a more competitive travel type program. Players tryout for the team and get a feel of what more competitive softball is all about. This can be a way to further the player’s skills, and/or determine if the player has an interest in trying out for the travel teams. The All-Star team is a higher commitment level than In-House, and players earn various positions through practice, skill and competency at that position, as well as effort in practice and in games. This is a great way for players to take their game to the next level, and determine if a more competitive softball experience is something they would enjoy. There is a Player Participation Fee for those that make the All-Star team, in past years it has been approximately $100-$150 dollars. This amount will be finalized and communicated to the players/parents once the team is selected and the tournaments are scheduled.

When are tryouts for the All-Star team?

Tryouts for the KGSA All-Star teams will be in May. An informational flyer will be provided to coaches and players at that time. You can also check the KGSA website homepage for location and time details.

What are players asked to do at All-Star team tryouts?

At tryouts the player's skills will be evaluated in multiple phases of the game. Players will demonstrate the ability to catch pop-ups and throw from the outfield, infielding and throws to first base, and hitting, and if applicable to the player there will also be pitching and catching skills evaluated as well.

What is the All-Star team schedule for practices and games?

The practice schedule will be set by the All-Star team coach for each level. Practices will most likely begin the week following try outs. The games are a round robin tournament format on weekends, where each team plays three games. Games will begin toward the end of June and the last tournament is in July. More specific details will be provided by each coach after tryouts and team selection is completed.

Is League Sponsorship required?

Yes. During the spring season each team is responsible for at least one League Sponsorship. These tax-deductible donations go directly to costs that occur in keeping your league functioning. Anything earned by a team above the set amount for League Sponsorship is held for that team and can be used for team expenses (Banners, Sweatshirts, Team parties, etc.)
