Sportsman takes BCYBL Major League title.

Sportsman were taken to the limit but held on to defeat Lions 8-7 to capture the Beaver County Youth Baseball League major league championship. It was an unbelievable back and forth, up and down game featuring many great hits, a highlight reel defensive play, a game-tying home run and outstanding late-inning pitching.
Lions led off the top of the first with a hit by Brandon Marcello and a walk to Bryce Hoenig. Daniel Verrico followed with a two run double and scored on Andy Broniszewski's fly out to give Lions and early 3-0 lead. Sportsman responded in the bottom of the first with a single by Connar McKay and a double by Ricky Zuk. Brett Kovach then doubled in both runners to cut the lead to 3-2. Sportsman tied the game 3-3 in the second after Mckay singled, stole second, and scored on Zuk's double. Sportsman would have scored more but a deep fly ball by Kovach to the fence in left-center field was run down by Bryce Hoenig, who made a diving, rolling catch to end the inning and give some momentum back to Lions. Lions responded in the third with a string of hits by Marcello, Hoenig, Verrico, Jeremy Steffine, Broniszewski, Aaron Scassa and Noah Lalama to score 4 runs to take a 7-3 lead. Sportsman, once again responded. Chris Stitt led off with a single. With one out Andrew Kaylor doubled and Skyler Huskins reached base on a dribbler in front of home plate which scored both runners. With the score 7-5, Nico Wilson walked. Tommy Rimer came to the plate with the chance to tie the game, and did just that. A two-run home run just below the scoreboard made it 7-7. Kaleb Martin came in to pitch the 4th and 5th innings and allowed just one walk. In the bottom of the fifth for Sportsman, McKay walked (he finished with three hits/one walk) and advanced to third on Zuk's fourth double of the game. Brett Kovach then hit a slow grounder to second base which was enough to get McKay in from third for an 8-7 lead. Rimer came in to pitch the sixth and gave up a one-out single to Austin Merendo. He then retired the next two batters on strikes to seal the victory for Sportsman.
