The 2011-2012 Season in Review During the 2011-2012 Youth Folkstyle, Freestyle, Greco Roman & High School wrestling seasons, NWWC wrestlers (ages four through eighteen) amassed 70 State Championship Medals (1st through 8th place), 12 Individual State Titles (1st place) and 4 USAW All-American Honors (1st through 8th place at Nationals). As a team, NWWC placed 1st at the WSWA Folkstyle State Championships (6-8 year olds), 1st at the WSWA Kids Freestyle State Championships and 9th at the Washington Cadet/Junior Freestyle State Championships (high school division).

Results: 2012 USAW ASICS/Vaughan Cadet & Junior Nationals NWWC high school wrestlers Brian Burchett (Klahowya), Adam Burchett (Klahowya), and Jake Velarde (North Kitsap) traveled to Fargo, ND to compete at the 2012 USAW ASICS/Vaughan Cadet & Junior National Championships over the week of July 14th, each returning with All-American honors. Brian Burchett defeated six wrestlers including the California, Colorado and Iowa State Champion on his way to place 6th in the 120 lb Cadet Greco-Roman division. Adam Burchett defeated five wrestlers including the Georgia, Michigan, Utah and Virgina State Champion to place 6th in the 113 lb Junior Freestyle division. Jake Velarde bested six opponents including the Illinois and Michigan State Champion to place 8th in the 138 lb Junior Greco-Roman division (video below). The USAW ASICS/Vaughan Cadet & Junior National Championships is a precursor tournament to the World and Olympic team trials, a preeminent scouting venue for college wrestling coaches and host to over 2,000 of America's top high school wrestlers from all 50 states.

Results: 2012 USAW West Kids/Cadet Regional Championships NWWC sent twelve local youth wrestlers to Pocatello, ID over the week of June 17th to compete for Team Washington at the 2012 USAW West Kids/Cadet Regional Championships. The annual tournament pits the top youth wrestlers from WA, OR, ID, CA, MT, WY, UT, NV, AZ, AK and HI for a seat at the 2012 ASICS Kids Freestyle & Greco Roman National Championships in Orem, UT on June 26th.
Three NWWC wrestlers brought home five medals for Team Washington including one individual title - Cole Edwards of Silverdale, age 6, earned a 1st place finish in the Freestyle Bantam 40 lb division. Edwards also earned a 2nd place finish in the Folkstyle Bantam 40 lb division. Thor Michaelson of Bremerton, age 8, earned a 2nd place finish in the Freestyle Bantam 60 lb division and a 3rd place finish in the Folkstyle Bantam 60 lb division. Michaelson defeated six opponents, including the California, Montana and Wyoming State Champion. Diego Clemen of Bremerton, age 8, defeated the Oregon and Wyoming State Champion to earn a 4th place finish in the Freestyle Bantam 65 lb division.

Results: 2012 WSWA Cadet/Junior Freestyle State Championships Northwest Washington Wrestling Club (NWWC) sent ten Kitsap County high school wrestlers to Centralia High School, Centralia, WA on Saturday, May 12th to compete at the 2012 WSWA Cadet & Junior Freestyle State Championships. Seven NWWC wrestlers finished the day placing in the top-6 (All-State honors), while four NWWC wrestlers earned top-3 place finishes and qualified to wrestle for Team Washington at the USAW Asics/Vaughan Cadet & Junior National Championships in Fargo, ND on July 14th, 2012.
Results: 2012 WSWA Kids Freestyle State Championships Congratulations to NWWC State Champions Ignacio Salazar, Cole Edwards, Lars Michaelson, Thor Michaelson and Arik Lundberg, and the fourty-six Kitsap County youth wrestlers who brought home a first place team finish in the Bantam Division (6-8yrs old) and the overall team title from the 2012 WSWA Kids Freestyle State Championships in Sedro Woolley, WA on Saturday, May 5th. Of the fourty-six NWWC wrestlers who made the trip to Sedro Woolley to compete in the 67-team tournament, thirty-two of them earned top-8 finishes (All-State honors) and the right to compete for Team Washington at the 2012 USAW Kids/Cadet Western Regional Championships in Pocatello, ID over the week of June 17th.

Results: 2012 WSWA Greco-Roman State Championships All six NWWC wrestlers who traveled to Pasco, WA on Saturday, April 28th to compete at the 2012 WSWA Greco-Roman State Championships, earned All-State honors by placing in the top-eight in their respective age & weight divisions. Cadet division wrestlers Brian Burchett and Eric Ladesma each qualified to wrestle for Team Washington at the Greco Roman Kids/Cadet Western Regional Tournament in Pocatello, ID on June 17th. Junior wrestlers Adam Burchett, Jake Velarde and Brian McCarty each qualified to compete for Team Washington at the 2012 USAW Asics/Vaughan Cadet & Junior Greco Roman National Championships in Fargo, ND on July 13th. Adam Burchett & Jake Velarde both finished the day with individual State Titles.

Results: 2012 ASICS/USAW Kids Folkstyle Nationals Two NWWC youth wrestlers traveled to Cedar Falls, Iowa over the weekend of March 30th to compete at the 2012 ASICS/USAW Kids Folkstyle National Championships. Thor Michaelson earned All-American honors with a top-eight place finish. Congratulations to both wrestlers.
Results: WIAA Mat Classic XXIV Twelve NWWC wrestlers earned the right to compete for their respective high schools at Mat Classic XXIV, the annual high school State Championship wrestling tournament held at the Tacoma Dome over the weekend of Feb 17th, 2012. Eight of the twelve NWWC wrestlers earned All-State honors, placing in the top eight. Five of those eight NWWC wrestlers made it to the finals, and Three of those five NWWC wrestlers won individual State Titles.

Results: 2012 WSWA Folkstyle State Championships Cameron Dubos and sixteen other NWWC wrestlers earned top-8 medals and All-State honors at the 2012 WSWA Folkstyle State Championships over the weekend of January 28th. Dubos won the Cadet 100 lb division and NWWC won its third consecutive Team Title in the Bantam division (6-8 yr olds). The 2012 WSWA Folkstyle State Championship tournament drew over 900 wrestlers and 97 teams from across the state. Read about it in the Kitsap Sun.

Results: 2012 Oregon Classic Six NWWC wrestlers traveled to Redmond, OR over the weekend of Jan 14th, to compete at the 2012 Oregon Classic. Two NWWC wrestlers earned top-3 place finishes. The Oregon Classic drew 174 teams and nearly 1000 of the top youth wrestlers from six northwest states.
