Boys of Summer Select Baseball
Philosophy
As coaches, we all know that success does not just happen. There is a personal cost associated with success. This personal cost is assessed in terms of the dedication, commitment, work, faith and trust that one is willing to apply to the endeavor.
Preparation can produce success provided that you perform when called upon. This is true in all aspects of life. You cannot just show up and expect to be successful. You have to develop the habits and do whatever it takes to be successful first.
Preparation comes on two levels. First, you need to attract players with core baseball skills and a desire to improve on those skills. Then, the coaches and parents need to create an environment (both in practices and in general team culture) that allows those players and their teammates to thrive.
If we want to be successful (we being the players, the parents, the coaches, and the program) the collective “we” needs to do what is necessary to create the opportunities to be successful.
Do we want to win at all costs? No, this is youth baseball. Furthermore, that reinforces a negative message about priorities in sports and life in general.
Do we want to put ourselves in a position to have the opportunity to win every game? Yes, definitely. This reinforces a positive message, that preparation, work and sacrifice can lead to success, but only if you take advantage of the opportunity at hand.
In closing, as coaches, we have the opportunity and privilege to play a role in these young men’s lives. If we can bring out the best in everyone in our organization, we will succeed above and beyond anyone’s imagination.
